    Tori (born Myra Ellen) started playing the piano at 2 1/2 and was accepted into the Peabody Conservatory at age 5 (the youngest student there ever). She was very much considered a prodigy. She had a rough time at the conservatory though, because she wasn’t very interested in classical music (it was the late ‘60s and she quickly developed an interest in rock, especially Led Zeppelin) and she had trouble reading sheet music (she had been playing by ear before entering the conservatory). She has said in interviews that she realized that to be a concert pianist you want to be among the best in the world, and she wasn’t passionate enough about playing other people’s music to give her entire being over to becoming one of the best. She lost the scholarship at 11, and was by her own words a “failed prodigy”.
    At age 13 her minister father brought her around the bars of DC and got her a piano bar job at a gay club (he was her chaperone), and she spent the next 10 years playing piano bars and hotel lounges. During those 10 years she honed her live performance skills and amassed a huge library of cover songs that she knows by heart. She moved to LA and eventually formed a rock band called “Y Kant Tori Read” (a nod to her difficulty reading sheet music at the Peabody). The band was signed by Atlantic, but by the time they recorded their album of songs that Tori had written, the band was basically broken up and they used session musicians. The album (also titles Y Kant Tori Read) was released in 1988 and was a commercial flop.
    Tori took it really hard, but it catalyzed her into finding a more authentic voice, which led to her writing and recording her first solo album, Little Earthquakes, which was released in 1992 to acclaim and commercial success. This performance of Winter (from Little Earthquakes) was recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1991, and is probably one of the first times this song (and many other songs from the album) was performed live in front of an audience. It’s absolutely mind boggling that she had barely performed this song live before this show.
    Tori has gone on to have a very successful career. She’s released 16 studio albums, written a musical that was staged at the National Theater in London, and has toured relentlessly. Her current tour is her 15th international tour, and she has performed some 1,400 shows since 1992. She’s considered one of the best live acts out there, and is probably the best piano player in the pop/rock world (give or take an Elton John).

    In case you didn't pick up on it, the third verse and chorus are meant to be from Tori to her father, about the sacrifices he made for her dream, and asking him, when you gonna love you as much as I do. It's such a loving tribute, and her parents were in the audience for this performance, you can even see her glancing up at them during certain points, in particular, never change.

    • @toriless
      @toriless Před 9 měsíci +5

      I was never sure if "when you gonna love you as much as I do" was them talking to her or not, she seems to have been filled with doubt for the first half of her life. Calling herself a nerd but being a beautiful prom queen. Voted most likely to succeed, etc. and singing about not being "where the pretty girls are"?

    • @scottNNJ
      @scottNNJ Před 9 měsíci +5

      @@torilessThat line is her dad telling her to love herself, and to live the life that she wants, not what he wants for her. I always get hung up on “you say I wanted you to be proud of me - I always wanted that myself”… who is saying what? I *think* she’s still quoting her dad saying, in the last part, that he always wanted Tori to be proud of Tori. But I’m not entirely sure.

    The dynamics match the push and pull of a difficult father-daughter relationship: the tenderness vs. the conflict that is a loving relationship between a conservative father and his rebellious and wildly talented daughter. Genius. Your reaction made me cry. This song has never been one of my favourites because I couldn’t relate, but the way it affected you,and your analysis, gave me a deeper appreciation. You will never see a better performance of a magical song by any performer EVER. If I am right , this was Montreux Festival 1991, the very year Little Earthquakes was released. She is in her first year of touring, and using the electric piano which would later be replaced by her Beloved Bosendorfer Grand. Considering her lack of experience performing with large audiences, she has everyone in her thrall interacting with full eye contact yet total immersion in the song and the embryonic star is already in the ascendant.
    Her voice here is crystal clear and fragile sometimes almost a spoken whisper but then incredibly powerful, but always in complete control. Her audible breathing brings a real humanity to her sound as she uses it as an extension of her vocal sound to emphasise key points in the song. This breadth of musical timbre is an extremely rare talent.
    As a 64 year old man who loves Prog, especially Van der Graaf Generator and Peter Hammill, I have been massive a fan since day one. She encompasses everything I like in music - originality, great lyrics, fantastic themes and melodies, but above all integrity and open honesty.

    Great analysis - as a Tori fan of some 30yrs (lawdy I feel old) it is a treat to see new people appreciate her particular skillset. I don't think any other pop/rock artist has quite the same symbiotic connection to the piano or uses it so extensively to underscore the fabric of the song. That connection is what supports the meticulous dynamic changes and complex breath-work that lets her communicate the song exactly as she feels it in the moment. It's really lovely to see people with technical expertise giving their reaction. Thank you :)

    Lyrically what I always loved about the song was the repetition on the White Horses line. “All the white horses are still in bed” there is time [for dreaming], later “all the white horse have gone ahead” so there is missed opportunity and it ends with “all the white horses...(vocalizing)” which is denial or refusal to give up on your dreams.

    New sub here! I watch a ton of reaction videos and by far I love how you do yours the best! The way you point out certain things and then go back to those parts in the performance, etc., is just refreshing (and I learn so much more that way compared to most other reaction videos). It's a type of reaction video "style" I've never come across before and I absolutely love it! You don't just react to something in your videos - you actually TEACH us viewers using your expertise in singing and performing (which is SO incredible and I've never seen anything else like it)! You are so unique in the way you do this reaction and I knew I was going to sub after only a few minutes in! ☺️
    Ofc my favorite artist of all time has always been Tori!!!! I'm almost 45 yrs old and I started listening to her in the early-mid '90s when she first started out (she was very briefly in an '80s pop band named Y Kant Tori Read, where she tried incorporating the piano into, but it flopped miserably). She's still very embarrassed about it. One of her Y Kant Tori Read videos is still on CZcams, to my knowledge anyway. The song is called "The Big Picture" and it's kinda funny watching it; you get to see majorly fun '80s stuff (cuz ummm yeh, it's got hella'80s vibes ofc), and you still get to enjoy Tori's lovely voice. She still, as usual ofc, looks absolutely stunning even with a big perm! 😂
    l've always thought she was (and still is) one of the most underrated musical artists; she was nominated once for a Grammy I think, but she's never won one and I just think that's soooo wrong, even though the Grammys, imo, have now mainly just become about mainstream stuff and ONLY mainstream stuff for quite some time. Might as well just finish auto-tuning the entire world now, right? It's just really too bad, bc like I said, Tori is massively and immensely underrated... today it seems all there really is is just so many other "generic, copy-cat" musicians that don't even come close to matching or exceeding her musical, artistic genius - you know, just that incredibly surreal and raw, soulful, beautiful artistry! As you can probably already tell by now, I'm a huge Toriphile, one of the kinda quirky monikers her devoted fans like me are called 😂 She's beyond amazing. I've only been able to see her live once, unfortunately, but it's definitely an experience I'll never, ever forget. The performance you reacted to here is when she was just starting out and it's one of her most well-known and loved live performances. Most reaction videos I've seen on Tori use this performance to react to, and it's a perfect one, imo, bc there's just so much great, phenomenal stuff to work with there (even tho imo every Tori song has so much depth and emotion to it that it's unreal). This particular song, "Winter", is definitely in my top 5 Tori songs, and it always makes me bawl every time I hear it (especially since I lost my dad 11 years ago; but even before he passed it still made me tear up every time I heard it). She is literally a genius prodigy - starting playing and writing piano music between ages 3-5 I believe - and a daughter of a preacher. 😊She was also a student at the prestigious Peabody musical institute, but they wanted her to play only classical piano while she wanted to play her own style - such a "Tori" thing to do - she was going to do exactly what she wanted, no matter how "prestigious" a school was or if they told her she didn't have any talent! She definitely knew there was way more to piano than just classical pieces, and I'm sure the Peabody Institute felt very limiting for her, just like when she was in that band, Y Kant Tori Read (which I'm so glad she didn't continue to pursue, bc she for sure knew that it just WAS NOT HER, and it would NEVER BE HER)! And, just like that, once she started going solo, she immediately just so naturally blossomed into who the real Tori was as a musical artist and talent! It just happened so smoothly and gracefully to the point where it was so obvious she'd made the exact right decision! Beautiful bit about her. 🌸 ❤
    Also it never ceases to amaze me how she can write, literally, an entire album, including each and every instrument, etc. (she can also play the harpsichord and many other instruments); plus, like you pointed out, how she can play the piano without even looking at it AND sing at the exact SAME TIME w/o ever missing a beat anywhere (which I've always heard is an incredibly *difficult* thing to do, and I think your comments about that explained it so perfectly). Imo Tori encompasses everything, from small to big to whatever - she encompasses all that's possible to be a true, genuine, extremely talented ARTIST. Her natural, inborn mastery of being what a raw, true artist really is is what always (and continues to) impress me so much; she consistently bares her soul to all of us (even at the age of 60 yrs-young rn) through her medium of musical artistry, which continues to be absolutely stunning and real every time, bc THAT'S WHO SHE REALLY IS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN...IT IS WHO SHE WILL FOREVER BE. I thank her, with such gratitude, for her help in getting me through so many lows in my life but also having her music during the ups in my life too - she's never let me down! Now I never take things like that lightly - not just anything or anyone can do that thru their music - at least not for me! 🫶🏻 ✨
    Anyway, so sorry this comment got so long (and if anyone made it this far, bless your wonderful heart), but I really just wanna end it here by saying again just how much I really enjoyed your reaction to Tori, and how I'm looking forward to watching so much more of your reactions! You reacted to Tori similar to how I do too in regards to feelings and emotions (but I did learn a lot of new things I didn't know before either, like terminology, etc. SO COOL)!! I can tell you are an extremely knowledgeable, beautiful and talented woman who definitely knows her stuff! 😉 Love love love this video! Thank you so much! ❤
    Edit (addition): btw - when you were talking about the wonderful effects of Tori's use of *silence*, I thought immediately about if I had been at that exact performance, I bet I could've heard a pin drop! When I saw her live on her Scarlet's Walk Tour (one of my fave Tori albums too) there were many silent moments when I swear you could've heard a tiny little feather drop! 🪶 It was seriously that intense, and there were amazing moments when I know I wasn't the only one there who was holding their breath while Tori performed. 😉 Many blessings, and I can't wait until your next video!

I think for her it just spills out because she knows exactly the emotion and connection she wants to communicate and it just happens, cuz shes willing to be totally vulnerable while at the same time commanding the stage. I can’t think of many performers in this category

      Yes. She studied classical piano at Peabody from 1968 to 1974. In 1974, when she was eleven, her scholarship was discontinued, and she was asked to leave. Amos has asserted that she lost the scholarship because of her interest in rock and popular music, coupled with her dislike for reading from sheet music.

    Good ear for recognizing how difficult it is to sing and play at the same time. Tori is especially adept at this because if you listen to her right hand, it outlines the harmonies around her vocal melodic line but she never reinforces it which is what most pianist/singers do. Mainly because it's difficult to not want to gravitate your vocal pitch to the notes that your right hand are playing. She also will use the piano to accentuate the rhythm but leaves enough space for her vocals - "Where the drifts get deeper (pling!)" for example. Then there's simply the posture. It's hard to sing sitting down and on top of that, she knows not to shade out the audience seated to left side. Guitar players can at least move their bodies around as needed but the piano really anchors you in one spot. And of course, the song writing - it's absolutely perfect and entirely her.

    As a kid, freezing my butt off in cold and deep snow, he always had time to stop and warm me up.
    I'm an old man and my dad has long since passed on. But this song makes me cry. He was a good son of a gun and Tori Amos is a genius pianists and songwriter. Probably a different sort of comment for an opera singer such as yourself but that is the glory of of music.

    What a gorgeous song, and such an authentic performance.
    Seeing as you've hit on Tori Amos, you should check out something by the genius of English art pop, Kate Bush. No better place to start than her extraordinary 1978 debut single, Wuthering Heights (inspired by the Brontë novel) which she wrote at 17, and released when she was 19. The vocal is arrestingly unique and really, really fukn high. It didn't sound like anything else at the time or since, and when it went to No 1 in the UK, it was the first self-penned song by a female artist ever to do so.
    She blazed a path for other female artists such as Tori Amos to follow, but there are no bounds on the legions of musicians she has inspired, and continues to inspire.

    Great astute analysis Jess! There are plenty of tutored musicians with God given talent that can draw us in and move us and transport us, like - Franco Corelli, Sonya Yoncheva, Yuja Wang, and Janine Jansen, but there are also talented artists like Tori Amos that flirt with extensive training, but instead venture out on their own because of their drive to share and communicate their truths and messages through music. We can leave it to experts to evaluate and categorize her, but she is no doubt a powerful, lasting and relevant voice that can draw us in, move us, and transport us with the best of them!

Somethings missing for the last decade... nothing can take away the legacy or her contributions but 90s Tori reigns supreme. After TVAB, she changed. Scarlets Walk is a good album with some great tracks... but i miss her original sound.

      My theory on that is bittersweet; that seems to be the point where her personal life made her truly happy. She lost a lot of the genuine angst, anger, and depression that she'd vent through her music. Happy for her yes, but I do think her music suffered because of it.
