One of the things I love about your reactions that set you apart aside from your good taste, great attitude and intelligence is your ability to pick up on details and appreciate their significance toward the whole artistic product. (You would have made a great lawyer!) During the 90's especially, Tori Amos was one of those rare creative fireballs; a sort of Tony Iommi of piano. This was an example of unbridled talent all around, pouring out of the place. Here, even the camera work was superior as well as the sound, so kudos to the filming and production crew. They allowed us to see and hear everything that was going on beautifully.
Even the lyrics are Geezer Butler worthy (of painful memories of growing up as a minster's daughter):
    So I ran faster
    But it caught me here
    Yes my loyalties turned
    Like my ankle
    In the seventh grade
    Running after billy
    Running after the rain
    These precious things
    Let them bleed
    Let them wash away
    These precious things
    Let them break
    Their hold on me
He said, "You're really an ugly girl
But I like the way you play"
    And I died
    But I thanked him
    Can you believe that?
    Sick!
    Holding on to his picture
    Dressing up every day
I want to smash the faces
    Of those beautiful boys
    Those Christian boys
So you can make me cum
    That doesn't make you Jesus
    These precious things
    Let them bleed
    Let them wash away
    These precious things
    Let them break
    Their hold on me
    I remember
    Yes
    In my peach party dress
    No one dared
    No one cared
    To tell me
    Where the pretty girls are
    Those demigods
    With their nine-inch nails
    And a little fascist panties
    Tucked inside the heart
    Of every nice girl
    These precious things
    Let them bleed
    Let them wash away
    These precious things
    Let them break
    Let them wash away
    These precious things
    Let them bleed now
    Let them wash away
    These precious things
    Let them break
    Precious, precious

For those who don't know, Tori Amos writes her own lyrics, her own melody. She plays piano, which is usually the main instrument. She has produced all of her albums (the first 1 or 2 were co-produced). I don't know if she has ever co-written a song. If she has, it's not the norm. She arranges orchestral parts. Note that producing an album means choosing the session musicians and what the accompaniment is. She was the youngest person to be admitted to the Peabody institute at age 5 for her piano work. She is a musical genius.

It's also fun to mention that she got kicked OUT of Peabody for "musical insubordination." They did not appreciate her playing songs by ear and wanted her to be patient and learn theory, and Tori didn't stop playing what she wanted to play (which sets the scene for her whole career, tbh).
There's a great little story she tells about when she was small, that she told her grandfather, "Grandpa, songs are chasing me." And he told her to slow down and let them catch her. Forever glad that she slowed down.
She also has synesthesia and from what I've read, she envisions songs as forms of light, which is fascinating!

Tori was the best concert I ever saw, hands down, boys for pele tour, she controlled the entire audience, easily, and that was @ the Paramount in Madison Square Garden, NYC... tori is and always has been on another level... she has a vision and goes for it. She is my #1 favorite artist. In top 5 is Tori, Tool, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, and The Doors. But I went to a concert back maybe the late 90s (can't remember for sure). She was touring with Alannis Morisette. In the arena, Morisette's music sounded good. But when Tori came on, the sound mixing was TERRIBLE. It all ran together, it clashed, it screeched and rebounded. I couldn't hear her piano at all. It was honestly really terrible. I don't even consider that I actually saw her in concert, because the sound was just a big unidentifiable jumble. I took my niece with me for her birthday. She was an even bigger fan than I was, and she was extremely disappointed.
I know she's the queen of live performances, but somebody REALLY screwed up that night.
The only other time I went one of her concerts, I was by myself in a fancy theater. The opening act was some young guy - just him and a guitar, and omg, he was just a bubble gum performer with nothing but very simplistic, semi-catchy tunes. It was almost a joke, like music made for a commercial.
I sat through it for about 45 minutes and couldn't take anymore. I walked out before Tori got on stage. I DO regret it, because the sound mixing was were to that point really quite good, and hopefully would have been good when Tori took the stage. As accomplished of a musician as she was, I will NEVER fathom why she would choose to have such an untalented person as an opening act. I was there by myself. If not, I likely would have stayed and maybe seen a really great show. I KNOW that she's phenomenal live, which is all the more reason I've been disappointed in my two experiences.

I still talk about that show to this day as the most incredible experiences of my life, not just best concerts, best experiences period. It expanded my understanding of the limits of human capacity and capability. It was at once the most human an inhuman thing I’d ever seen, otherworldly yet grounded deeply in the earth, absolutely raw and yet utterly refined. I particularly liked you mentioning Tori's interaction with the other musicians. Knowing how much improv goes into her live shows, I always look for those signs. It's borderline incomprehensible to me how anyone can play an instrument to the level she does, and sing at her level, while investing so much emotion into it, and improvising, and while doing all this simultaneously also keep track of what everyone else is doing and think ahead to let them know where she's going. It just blows my mind. And this isn't even my favorite live version of this song. Also, yes the drumming is phenomenal. There are actually versions of this with only her and a piano, but the drums are so integral to the entire feel and atmosphere that I always stick to the performances that include Matt.

Maybe already mentioned, but that muted bit was Jon on bass. Love the way he plays. And Matt I hold in such high esteem with the likes of Vinny Colaiuta. Smooth and so fkn tasty! Being a drummer myself, my talent doesn't equal my passion.

Tori's always had a mastery of texture, dynamics, and composition. Her selection of musicians has always been those who demonstrably embrace her vision. While I'm a deep, deep fan of her pre-2000 work (and post-2000 compilations), the newer works are no less exceptional.

I love Tori. You can see Matt Chamberlain in a lot of live performances with Tori. I think he started with her on her 1998 tour. They have amazing musical "chemistry" together. Her other session videos are amazing. I recommend IIEEE. She's compared to Kate Bush a lot (I love her too), but I respect Tori a little bit more since Tori has a much more expansive tour history than Kate.

This performance had a lot of beautiful improv that deviated from the album track, and really allowed her amazing band to shine. She has performances that adhere more to the album version, usually done on network late-night shows. She's amazing, and she's still at it. Her first-ever single was "Silent all these years." She was so young when she started but her brilliance was evident. She's had an amazing career and has continued experimenting and pushing the limits on how much emotion a voice can portray and how metaphoric a lyric can be yet still communicate.

Matt Chamberlaine made (at least) one recording with Pearl Jam, which is the version of "Alive" used for the official video. It is the best drum version of "Alive" ever recorded, and there are hundreds of recordings of "Alive". Matt stepped in as a stand in drummer between Krusen and Dave Abbruzzese, but didnt want to join Pearl Jam long term.

OMG, omg. So, I have been a huge fan of Tori Amos since the 2000s. She got me out of listening exclusively to heavy metal. And I just started learning drums last year. And I love, love, love the work of Matt Chamberlain. I only figured out who he was after I started learning drums and identified the Tori songs that had these great drum parts. I have not even watched this video yet and am extremely excited to see this. Precious Things is, quite literally, my #1 favorite song of all time. But the variants that have Matt C. playing drums live are the variants of this favorite song I love the best. I'm giddy in anticipation of watching this video!

I’ve been a huge Tori fan for decades and I think her hand movements where she removes her arm from the piano are her way of moving to the music since she’s tethered to the piano. She does this even when she’s playing alone without the band.

I love listening to ppl who really know a lot about music talk about how great Tori Amos is. I don’t know a lot about the finer points of music, I just like what I like and I can’t always vocalize why. Then I hear someone like you pointing out why certain things are significant or maybe pointing to a sound ive heard a million times and making me HEAR it from a different perspective, from an musician’s objective of KNOWING how to make music, it just makes me appreciate her that much more. I know she’s freaking amazing, but to hear exactly why, professionally and skill-wise, brings it to a whole new level.
This is a damn good song and Tori is amazing. I just can’t say that enough. She doesn’t get enough attention for the work she’s done.

Tori made a lot of hand gestures.. while something may have been a signal, very few are. I think they could lieten and hear the way she was conducting. When she got into a song, especially the angstier ones, she did her hands aa a release of energy. I have seen her enough times to know this with certainty.
