@@danieljodrey I'm assuming others here have written about this, but Tori began playing piano at age 2.5 and at age five, she was the youngest person ever admitted to the Peabody Conservatory of Music with a full scholarship for being a piano prodigy. Her whole educational career involved full days of practice, and then at age 12 she began playing professionally in bars and hotels. She also has toured more than most musicians throughout most of her career. So 'hours of practice to get it right' is a little bit of an understatement! :) It has been most of the days of her whole life beginning before she could read or even speak full sentences.

Tori is AMAZING. I love Regina Spektor so much, but Tori is on another plane of existence. This was her peak IMO. She still did great stuff, but this era was her best.
The whole In Session performance is GOLD. Watch all of it. Also watch the VH1 Story Tellers. It’s about the same era.
Again… love love LOVE Regina, but she ain’t got nothing on Tori’s emotional soundscapes.

Oh, man, I love Tori Amos. I was an instant fan after I heard her song 'God' on the radio. Took me weeks to figure out who it sung it, thanks to it being 1994, and no internet to speak of.
I manged to see her in concert twice. First time was 1996 in Los Angles, for the *Dew Drop Inn* tour, at the Greek Theater. It's an outdoor amphitheater in Griffith Park, nestled in a little canyon. Pretty Amazing show.
Second time was in 2007 in Boston at the Orpheum Theater during a thunder storm. Also, an amazing show. What was really incredible was being able to download the whole concert a few hours after attending it. The tour was called *Legs And Boots* (bootleg, get it) and anyone could download any concert from the entire tour for ( i think) $12 each.
Here's an interesting tidbit - Tori was the youngest person ever admitted to the prestigious Peabody Conservatory, at the age of 5. By age 11, her scholarship was cancelled, and was asked to leave because she wouldn't play the sheet music as written, and was too influenced by "rock and roll".
She was very experimental and quite influential herself. I mean, who else but Tori Amos would use the harpsichord in modern music? She even inspired Neil Gaiman to create the character Delirium, for the Sandman comic book series.
Please, check out some from music from her. 'Winter' is a simple, but beautiful song to start with. 'God' is the song that first caught my attention. Cheers

My friends who had seen Tori many other times and would have the opportunity to see her live in the future (I went to the USA just to see the shows) said I should take the remaining ticket to be on the floor, they were also allowed to go in but watched it from the recording area. Tori Amos is next level. She started playing piano by ear at age 2. Still remains the youngest person to receive a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at age 5. Her father is a Methodist minister, and her mother's side follows the native American Cherokee way. People compare her to Kate Bush (I love her too), but Tori tours way more than her, and Tori's songs are a lot more intimate/personal than Kate's.

Tori Amos is one of those artists who are IMO much better live than on their studio albums, most likely because of her exceptional improvisatory talent! She is also a master at mixing her own songs with excerpts of songs by other artists, e.g. when she incorporated excerpts of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" and Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy" in her own song "Father Lucifer" and made it sound like an original song. In another live performance titled "Tubular Bells / God / Running Up That Hill (Greek Theatre, Los Angeles CA 7/23/14)", she mixed excerpts of "Tubular Bells" and Kate Bush's "Running Up that Hill" with her own song "God".
BTW, she did a cover of Jimi Hendrix' "If 6 Was 9" (which was only included in a special edition of a maxi-single) in which she played her piano via a Marshall-amp. Out of the clips you find on youtube, the one titled "6 tori 9" seems to be the only one featuring the original studio version.

Wave, I started following you when you started reacting to BABYMETAL (MY FAVORITE BAND) but there was a time when Tori was my favorite musician. As a singer/ songwriter/ pianist, she is simply on another level. Tori was the youngest student ever admitted to Peabody institute at Johns Hopkins University on a full scholarship, she was 5 years old, she was kicked out at 11, evidently for "musical insubordination".
    Thank God.
A deep dive into her work is certain to forge new musical neural pathways in your brain and soul.
    She is simply phenomenal.
Father Lucifer, Hey Jupiter, Crucify, are a few suggestions from her, somewhere around, 16 studio albums...

    • @parkerhatcher224
      @parkerhatcher224 Před 10 měsíci

“Father Lucifer” is one of my all time favourites. That opening and repeating piano hook is absolutely perfect and really tickles the brain. The bridge when she comes in with multiple vocals reminds me a bit of Kate Bush. I know she’s been compared to her quite often, but I really only hear it during that bridge. And maybe some bits and pieces here and there. But that falsetto vocal in that bridge is just so playful and really reminds me of Kate. “Hey Jupiter (Dakota Version)” is also on my top 10 list. And “Crucify” has one of the most BRILLIANT arrangements done in the last 50-60 years, no contest. The “Chains” (Post chorus?) where the guitar (Mandolin sounding almost) sort of answers her vocal, always gets me. LOVE a good “Question and answer” piece with a starting vocal, and then a responding instrument. You’ve got great taste! Take care 😄.

I discovered Tori’s music through a Rick Beato video a year ago and it literally changed my entire life as a musician and general..human being. I LOVE that THIS was your first introduction to her stuff. Like. Baptism by fire 🔥! Check out any live version of “The Waitress” from the 90’s too. She does this cool middle eight, and ends on a really interesting. Really strong..vocal technique? I’m truly not sure what I’d call it. Hopefully you check it out and find the right video where she does that ending. And definitely listen to her first record. Her second record. Third. And so on. Like. Start at the beginning. When you can. It’s worth it. Also, brilliant insight regarding Muse and the idea that M.B took a little inspiration from Tori Amos. I’ve been listening to Muse since they were still playing small venue’s (In Canada at least) and never heard anybody mention anything about them and Tori Amos. But you’re totally right! Lots of Radiohead. And maybe more than a sprinkle of Tori. Take care and thanks for the video! Really enjoyed your excitement re: the incredible musicianship of everyone in that lineup. I’m a huge soundscaping nerd (I’m a musician and studio owner/producer/engineer) and hearing what her first producer did with orchestral arrangements on her first record, moving through to her second producer on her (Third?) whom she ended up marrying, totally blew me away. When an artist has a good ear, they’ll do exactly what Tori and her guys have done in this example. Soundscaping and building tension is SO important. It gets lost at times. I think she was heavily involved in the production of her third record. It’s a masterpiece. Anyways, thanks again! She still tours with that bassist! Brilliant 👏
And a quick apology for the insanely long comment. Music is my whole world and sometimes I just can’t say what I’m trying to say and express in short form. It takes the sincerity out of it.
    Again, take care!

Somewhere between Boys for Pele and Choirgirl Hotel, she lost her love for what she was doing. Up until then, she'd been communicative, flirty and cheeky with the audience, but that last gig, no interaction, a face like thunder and a very clear vibe she didn't want to be there.
It was heartbreaking for me but, it turns out, she was touring with a broken heart.

I saw her last night here in St. Louis. She did Blood Roses. Someone uploaded a video if you're interested. Amazing show

9:07 Yeah… hand signals. They improved a TON live and would go on loops of chorus or verses until Tori felt it was right to move on. Then she’d signal to go on or end the song so they could all follow along.

Tori live can be iffy to a new listener. Sometimes she goes off on 20 minute side trip while singing, and if you don't know and love the original, you might not get the "extended" version. But seriously, do yourself a favor, and listen to as much Tori as you can.

Unfortunately Tori lost the 'spark' after To Venus and Back. Scarlets Walk was good, yeah.. but lacking. I've been a mega fan since the 80s (Y Kant Tori Read). Nothing over the last decade or more has been great... the past, though, is classic.

@eleanor4759 yup... and I don't know why Toriphiles deny it. So lackluster.

Mr. Wave Potter im not sure if I want to kill you (figuratively) or hug you. As pointed out by other commenters, Ms. Amos is a super genius. It is very concerning that you are just now discovering her. It is concerning that you cut away to comment on drums or guitar. Dude, I’m a drummer. I agree with you 100%. But you miss the point completely and it’s sacrilege. Please continue to introduce Tori to your audience. Forgive yourself do penance. Commune maybe with Joni and Nina. But for goodness sake please. Just please get a clue. And okay-hug.

It's not just her sound - her lyrics are brutal.

Yeah, she’s a badass. Also, I read somewhere that Trent Reznor wrote “Piggy” about her

I have never seen anyone NOT get Tori as much as you just did. You talked over her singing so many times. I think you completely missed the lyrics and therefore the meaning of the song

No. Let's not gatekeep. Considering Tori's unique relationship with English vowels and her cryptic lyrics, wouldn't it make more sense to let someone fall in love with her gorgeous sonic landscapes--which she's equally proud of--and discover her lyrics in their own time?

You step all over the meaning and magic of the song with your breaks and commentary. Okay. It's about the production to you. You missed the rest.

Something very terrible has happened to the character of this story. A more referent tone is required, Wave Potter.
