  • In this video I discuss how Facebook has been intercepting and decrypting your private data sent to apps that have nothing to do with Facebook over the years and how anyone else doing this kind of man in the middle attack would be facing prison time, but Facebook execs get special privileges.

I think there should be a balance, for example when you agree to privacy policies - "third party" is so vague. They should be legally required to be transparent about who every single third party is and have entire open sourced technical documentation on how each third party and themselves finds and uses that data. I know most people do not read the policies but I usually do and they are extremely vague yet intentially annoying to read.
For example youtube: I know they use basically every single mouse movement as a potential data source (well not know) but to me I am okay with what I do know because over the years youtube and google have helped me learn massive amounts of information. So from what I think I know I am 99.9% content with them using my data but I would like transparency to know what I don't know

Am I correct in saying that this was only if you had installed the Onavo VPN? If you hadn't downloaded that, your connection wouldn't be stripped right?

What makes it worse is that it's not just localised to the U.S, they do it in foreign countries as well. I don't even use Facebook and have seen the trackers all over the web by watching the developer tools, despite using blockers.

so, facebook does not intercept my traffic, unless I install their VPN and give it permission to install its root certificate, right? and don't get me wrong, this is pretty horrible, but also this video is clickbait.

I'm always wondering who are the people that work on those codebases? Are those developers so spineless? Imagine ending your work day and think "I feel good, knowing I'm making the world worse place"

I don't get it. If I hadn't installed the VPN, how was I getting their malicious root certificate that would allow them to MITM my device? Are you saying ALL Facebook services (including WhatsApp) installed that root cert? That sounds nuts.

To be clear, the users had to install the Onavo software to get popped right? Users that didn't do that step could not be tracked.

But sadly their were also rebranded apps. I guess if you've used some VPN app, you might want to check.
