      Yes. One should try to acquire as many "layers of defense" as possible.
      First layer being the ability to spot trouble before you get into one and just avoid it. Second layer is having a pretty good chance(being fit) of just running away if you do get into trouble despite trying to avoid it. Third layer being able to defend yourself if you get into trouble but can't escape.
      Many people skip straight to the third, but self defense is always pretty sketchy. No matter how good you are with a gun/martial arts etc, some random crazy guy doing one unexpected thrust with his knife or being slightly faster than you expected can quickly end your life. Knife battles especially are one of those you should absolutely avoid ever engaging in no matter of your personal skill level. Just too many ways for it to go horribly wrong even if you do everything right.

    Huge respect to you man. I wish more people in IT had mindset like yours. As an occasional IPSC and IDPA shooter I can tell that getting a basic level of handgun shooting is not very difficult, it will take just a dozen of training sessions with a decent instructor, it's also a lot of fun, and who knows, maybe one day this skill can save your life. No matter where you live, it's better to have it than not to have.
    What's important is that if you are not trained to make a good shot in normal conditions, and act in a stressful situations, then even if you own a gun you will probably have a big trouble to use it properly. Among all gun types, pistols require the most amount of skill from their users, especially small and light pistols, which are mostly used from concealed everyday carry. If you are not got used to them, then they will kick hard, they will be extremely unusually loud, they tend to make misses from small mistakes in your micro-movements. When I first showed my wife how to shoot a handgun she wasn't able to hit a standart chest silhouette target from 6 meters, it's really not that easy as it seems from movies or videogames. You have to absolutely automate gun safety in your head to the level of muscle memory, you have to learn and periodically train your grip, drawing and aiming to be able to use your skill in a stressfull situation. But fortunatly, shooting it's not a rocket science either, just a skill you need to keep up.
    I live in a country where guns laws here are really anti-people, 98% of civilians (according to official statistics) are disarmed and violent crime levels are quite high (partially because of it). Owning a handgun here is completely illegal, you can only have a longbarrel gun for hunting, handguns can be used and stored only in shooting clubs. If you use a gun on a bad guy, especially a pistol, you will definately move behind the bars for many years, BUT! Does it mean that you should listen to the bullshit government and corrupted politicians try to tell us and convince us it's true? THEY created the world that is convenient for THEM. They are safe in this world, they live in the safe areas, they will never face consequences of their political actions and decisions. But we, the people, don't belong to that world, we have to think for ourselves. What would be your excuse if you will not be able to protect yourself? What if you will not be able to protect your woman and your children?
    Our society is so rotten these days, folks. Stay safe

    • @ivanov83
      @ivanov83 Před rokem +10

      @@mycommentmyopinion I’m from Russia. Unfortunately the gun culture, safe, responsible and respectful handling firearms, is in a sad state here. The government put quite a big effort to restrict everything related to guns, and disarm as many civilians as possible, especially in the last 12 years. Guns are mostly spread among people related to army and police, and among shady criminals of course. Very few people outside of these categories ever hold a firearm in their hands during their life. There are unfortunately very limited amount of shooting clubs and very few people are interested in this by their own. Also it’s not even easily available to simply go to shooting club and try to shoot, you have to go through some amount of beurocracy to get a permission to do it. That’s why some part of top IPSC shooters from Russia are also related to police and military - usually it’s children of current or retired high ranking military officers, who gave them an opportunity to shoot and train a lot from a very young age without having to keep in mind such inconveniences like laws, acess to shooting ranges (most of them are not available for civilians) or ammo price (it’s quite expensive).
      I know it’s a hot topic of whether should guns be restricted or not, and what exactly should those restrictions be. I think there should be some “golden middle” between a strict control, medical and background for gun owners and freedom to own a gun and being able to protect yourself in the situation of life and death. When I see the news from US, I think that perhaps gun market there should be more regulated in some ways, but I pay a huge respect that people in the US almost religiously defend that famous constitution’s second amendment. That is a right deed.
      Some post soviet countries have even worse situation with gun control, but there are excellent examples of finding that golden middle btw. In Baltic countries like Estonia and Latvia guns are completely legal for self-defence if you haven’t committed any violent crimes and don’t have psychological diseases. And btw those countries are the only ones where there wasn’t much bloodshed, civil wars, or criminal problems in the 1990-s after the soviet union collapsed. They are most developed and prosperous among former soviet republics, they managed to get rid of old communist politicians and integrate into Europe, their crime rates are extremely low. Of course, that is not just because guns and self-defense are legal there, but that is one step to a more civilized society

      I'm not from Russia, but it's pretty similar here. It's much easier to obtain a pistol illegally as the legal route requires convincing the Head Commissioner that you need to own. Even then you can only open carry outside your own property if you work in the Police force or an armed security agency. Yet the murder rate was #11 in the world for most of the 2000's and 2010's. No I won't say where it is.

      @@iurifarenzena That’s why both countries are in the BRICS union. Perhaps it could mean that the governments share similar values :)
      To be honest, I do not know what is the actual level of crimes in Brazil. From what I’ve seen and read in the internet it’s crazy high. Perhaps it’s just the big cities like San Paolo and Rio. If my suggestions are right, crime level in Russia is much much lower. I mean, our problem is not that you can get robbed or killed by the gangsters on the street in a bad neighborhood, that’s thankfully a rare thing. However, the society is very atomised, people tend to live in a shitty conditions, poverty and hate each other. Russia is more about a dictatorship than about a chaos. It’s not rare that someone can kill another person while drunk, or because he didn’t like someone. Pointless agression is everywhere and neither police nor the society judge such behavior. The main law that works is the right of the strong, if you can inspire fear in people in your neighborhood, you’ll have a great life experience, if not - you’ll be in trouble. The police just won’t do anything in 99% of cases if someone gets scammed, robbed, killed etc, there too busy pushing political opposition and getting a big salary for that. It is not rare that police staff is picked from the lowest social bottom with all the consequences that come from it. But if someone dares to protect himself from a criminal then he will get a lot of trouble, for police it becomes the religious crusade to put a man in jail, because if people will think that it is normal to stand for themselves, to take the responsibility for their own lives, to unite and achieve justice, that will mean a huge threat to entire regime that is rotten from the bottom to the top, and that would mean that a lot of current police officers will probably move to jail themselves, or get exiled to the lowest parts of society where they belong

    ALWAYS READ THE TERMS OF YOUR INSURANCE!!! It is very common for the concealed carry insurance to have a term of "you will be covered ONLY if you win." That means you pay if you lose or go the plea deal route, (which is 90% of how criminal cases end.), you will owe the lawyer his hourly on top of the L or court payment/jail time.
    My advice is to shop around lawyers and pick their brain. Ask them about their records in criminal defense and and ask other lawyers about them.

      @raylopez99 Před rokem

      Our host is based but also biased, since he thinks a gun will protect you when in fact Bayes theorem will probably mean you won't get robbed like poor Bob did. I once calculated, based on statistics, that if you live in the worst neighborhood (I believe it was Chicago) but act normal (no gold chains around your neck, acting drunk, which is an invitation to get robbed) that you'll end up with a violent encounter about once every 5 to 15 years (I forget the math I did but I recall this range). You can do the math yourself by looking at crime rates and using a CUMULATIVE BINOMIAL PROBABILITY calculator (Google this). So for most Tech Bros who don't plan on being in Silicon Valley for the rest of their lives, probably you'll do OK if you just take normal precautions without a gun. What happened to Bob is probably bad luck, though of course if Bob had a firearm he'd be alive today, but that's looking at Bayes theorem kind of backwards (i.e., any death can be prevented, if you know, a priori, what is going to kill you, for example exercise to avoid heart disease if you know you will die of heart disease). Peace!

In places like SF they are consistently lowering the penalties for committing crimes. The lack of serious legal consequence opens the door for a lot of criminals to try things they previously may have stayed away from.
    The places that are reducing and/or eliminating legal implications for criminals also tend to have increasingly strict laws on legally obtaining/owning a firearm (not to mention legally carrying one). So the two major consequences for committing crimes (legal or physical harm) are both getting lower all the time.

When I was taking a class to get my CC license, my instructor told us a story of an attempted car jacking at a gas station, driver had a quicker draw and shot and killed the would be robber. Despite security recording, gas station clerk, etc. proving the robber was reaching for his gun and the driver shot out of self defense, the robber’s family’s lawyer decided to have constant lawsuits thrown at the driver hoping to bleed him out of money to win the lawsuits. Driver’s employer thankfully didn’t fire them for missing work due to lawsuits but those legal fees were pretty brutal that if he was fired from his work he’d be bankrupt and drained of money. Study your state’s gun laws and be ready for lawsuits even if your self defense actions were justified.

    My theory overall with anti gun techies is that they take safety in their mindset of instant gratification. Which takes me too the main point, cops aren’t instant. They do not show up in time and most of the time are the clean up crew. Thank god for them but they are not going to be there in your time of need most of the time. The ownership of your safety is on you, it doesn’t mean you need a gun (which is just an equalizer and a tool), your mind is the most important, train your body. Use the gun as an extension of you like any other tool. You need to know how to use it. Just like hands. Work out and stay healthy! Don’t forget to practically train. Not just train but train practically.
