Shearer didn't have VAR to cancel out goals
More goals are scored in general these days, compared to Alan Shearer's era. Defenders have a harder time due to how scrutinized they become whenever they're involved in questionable situations, and the game has evolved into being more offensive-minded in general.

@@mediacenterman8583 Easier isn't exactly the right word to describe it. It's very different now, compared to how it was 15+ years ago.
I don't think defenders today are less capable, I'm more inclined to believe that they're in better shape physically, than they were in the past. They're also required to do more things than simply defend. Wingbacks/offensive fullbacks used to be unheard of until the likes of Inter's Maicon and Ashley Cole became household names for their bombing runs down the flank.
That profile of a defender is completely normal these days, because the game has evolved and is not what it was in the past. Sports science has evolved and players are expected to be more fit in order to keep up with a more fast paced game, and that has naturally ramped up the frequency of goals being scored, which is what people wanted when the game was more slower, more physical, and had a higher emphasis on tactical setups.
if aquero would not have been taken off every game and put in cotton wool he would have hammered shearer look at the goals per minute and games played eg 184 goals in 275 appearances look at shearer goals 260 in 441 games so thats 166 games less to get 77 goals so around 4 and a half seasons less
