  • We have received many questions from you, our viewers, on the topic of female slavery. Of particular concern has been Daesh’s use of sex slaves - the group claims that this is in line with Islam. Let’s go back to the Quranic text and sit down with Dr. Shabir Ally to analyze and make sense of Islam’s perspective on female slavery.

the term "slave" is something else at the time of mouhammed in america years ago slavery was there and racism if you thing this is the slavery that you're talking about then i am sorry you're wrong mate this is not the slavery that i am talking about and there are not "slaves" they were" hostages" what happened in the time of the prophet is not what is in your mind look:
people attacked the muslims because of hate so the muslims had to defend their self and within the war there was people they have been taken as hostages and it's not permissible to take them as hostages if you can't afford for them the best clothing the best food the best life it's not permissible if you don't treat them like you treat your self exactly like your self The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "No one of you becomes a true believer until he likes for his brother what he likes for himself".
and god says (((And Allah has favored some of you over others in provision. But those who were favored would not hand over their provision to those whom their right hands possess so they would be equal to them therein. Then is it the favor of Allah they reject?))) so if you don't give the hostage his money his not your hostage any more Islam in the Noble Qur’an revolutionized an unprecedented revolution in human history, because it destroyed a social-political system that supported this, and this was done on three parallel axes. What remains of servants is an affection for God, glory be to Him, so a women could actually say no to a relation ship she is not forced as you claimed and you are not forced to take a hostage you can just forgive and let him go you know in islam there certain sins that you do and to get rid of the sin you can free a slave i have a whole research that i made about how islam hated slavery and tried to remove it wanna see it ?

I’m sorry but this Video is somewhat of an apologetic attempt trying to branch Islam into a “classical” and “today’s Islam” versions. That is not fair to the truth. Even if it was common practice at the time there’s no reason to believe that owning a human being is ethical. (By the way just because something was historically common that doesn’t mean it is automatically moral or even fair) Even if the true relationship was more like ‘employed housemaid and childminder’ because the ‘slave ‘owner’ has the mindset that a human is property than it is inevitable that situations like rape arises. Shabir Ali also mentioned that even wife’s were forced upon so slave women had basically no chance. I’m sorry but that’s just unacceptable.
I know morality can be grey and confusing but in my opinion rape IS wrong, it ALWAYS WAS wrong and it ALWAYS WILL BE wrong point blank period

I feel like he explains it better here than in this video and shows what Islam's view is on slavery and servants. please remember the time period and that worse slavery occurred in other parts of the world. and finally, Islam in no way accepts concubines today as it was only applicable to those times. there are other examples in which this occurs (verses are only applicable during that time) but what is important is the main message, to free the slaves and treat them humanely. the interpretations vary due to human error and truthfully their interpretation is not the word of God, if you really want to understand a concept read the Quran for yourself, Allah is legislate.

One very sad thing I am slowly beginning to realise with our ummah is that we don't want to discuss controversial subject and many of us would either want to sugar-coat it or try to defend it from their limited understanding and that can be a downfall. Now I'm not specifically talking about this topic alone but in general. Like the hudd punishments. Many Muslims tend to go into this apologetic mode where instead of discussing the reasons and wisdom behind such a punishments they will instead try to inform people that it would be near-impossible to produce four witnesses. Such things leave the wisdom out of the equations and often leave questions unanswered for those who may even be struggling. As for the topic in the video, it is rarely discussed and as a result enemies of Islam have an easy time picking our verses and narration out of context to spread false rumours which could have been avoided if only this was discussed more often. The issue of slavery is usually addressed by Muslims just stating that it is found in the Bible/Torah too. How will that help a agnostic, a Hindu or a Buddhist who is thinking of taking the shahadah? We should discuss more often of what the laws of and rights of slaves are in Islam just like we discuss the laws and rights of women or children in Islam. And though it may be officially banned in most countries,it still happens, and it still is brought up, especially by Islamophobes who will say about anything and mix falsehood therein. The bottom line I'm trying to say is that if we don't speak up more about this things then the wrong people will speak up. This message goes specifically out to those knowledgeable in any given controversialtopic in Islam.

I’m too young to be married but I just can’t imagine someone coming into my house, killing my husband, taking my children and r@ping me. Slaves are humans too, they have feelings. Now if this was not true, like I’m seeing from the comment section, why couldn’t the author of the Quran make it clear that it’s not allowed so that people don’t have to have different interpretations to it, and prevent these women from being r@ped all together. Why are we getting different answers from many Muslims. This also goes for child marriage.

It very much is true. Islamic slavery enslaved millions of African women, European women, Turkic women (before they converted), Asians and many others. Unlike European chattel slavery, Islamic slavery was centred around capturing women for use as described. It’s history, and a simple Wikipedia search of ‘history of slavery in the Islamic world’ will confirm as much. Truth is Islam and other Abrahamic religions are just manmade and products of their time; slavery of captured women for their bodies as war booty was a very normal thing in medieval Arabia, hence Islam allows it.

The Quran nowhere permits men to have sexual relations with female slaves without consent and with no dowry/ payment. In fact the Quran in Surat Al Nisa says: .....then marry from those whom your right hands possess of believing slave girls. And Allah is most knowing about your faith. You [believers] are of one another. So marry them with the permission of their people and give them their due compensation according to what is acceptable. ..." So she needs to be 1. believing, 2. a dowry/ payment needs to be given and 3. her family/ people need to be informed of the marriage. Interesting that 2 verses later Allah SWT says ".... but those who follow their passions want you to digress into a great deviation." Fiqh books that are 1000 years old mention that female slaves are less in status and intellect and one can engage in intercourse freely as she is his possession. What she believes does not come into play. This is totally against what the Quran says. May Allah guide us to the truth.

I actually love this channel. It is one of my favorites.
For those who may be wondering. Islam is quite flexible and it one of the religions that lasted this long and continues to grow at a consistent rate because it is. As times change and people and societies evolve, Islam is able to continue to make sense to a lot of people. I am not religious, but I am a historian and a cultural anthropologist- So I see it from this perspective. Take concubinage and slavery for example. When the Quran was revealed, this was the common practice all over the world and in nearly every society (except for isolated societies who were still hunter-gatherers/foragers (which tended to be very egalitarian). So it's a no brainer why things like concubinage and slavery are mentioned in the Torah, Bible, AND Quran.
That being said, I have seen a lot of verses in the Quran that also talk about freeing slaves when a prisoner of war is integrated into the new society, and also freeing/marrying female concubine slaves. In today's world things are vastly different. There is actually more peace and stability due to a generally more evolved code of justice and enforcement of laws in a lot more regions than there were in the times of the Quran. Also, conquering and colonization is extremely taboo all over the world nowadays (when it wasn't in the past.) I know it does not seem like it sometimes, but this is actually the truth of it. There are also less wars. As mentioned, the age of conquests has pretty much disappeared and was replaced by colonization, but even colonization is not as common as it once was.
The whole point of slavery among most societies was to preserve human life and it was also an archaic tool of assimilation. When a people were conquered, typically one of two things happened- 1. Most people were executed. Especially men. or 2. People were enslaved. It was a way for the society as a whole to feed, clothe, educated, and assimilate a conquered people. There are different kinds of slavery and I think most people think of the US slavery of African peoples when they think of slavery. That kind of slavery was permanent and chattel slavery. Most slavery of the ancient history and times of antiquity were more akin to indentured servitude, rather than chattel slavery. Most slavery was not permanent. Slaves were taught the language of their new society and they were taught trades. Many were apprentices who were eventually integrated, freed, and given citizenship status of some sort.
Women in most places in the world, until very recently, depended on men for their survival. They depended on the men in their tribe, they fathers, uncles, brothers, ect... And their husbands. In a lot of places today, women do not necessarily have to rely on men at all. But they did during the time when the Torah, Bible, and Quran were introduced. Also, this is not just a Abrahamic tradition. You can probably count on one hand societies that are not patriarchal, patrilineal, and/or patrilocal. It's just is what it is. Even a lot of atheist in the world still have patriarchal, patrilineal, and/or patrilocal customs and practices no matter how hard they try to deny it or avoid having them. It has just been ingrained in us for tens of thousands of years.

Excuses. Also, Persia at the time had no slavery since Cyrus the Great banned it, and slavery was an alien institution to India till Islam brought it. And as for applications of slavery, it meant things like Barbary Pirates robbing women from Greek islands and selling them to be used in some haram of a Muslim man, instead of being allowed to live her life in her village and marry a man and raise kids and be happy. That isn’t life preservation like you claim, that’s just sick.

A slave may buy himself from his master and be free. If a person is enslaved for some reason but then it becomes apparent that he has given up his wrongdoing and forgotten his past, and he has become a man who shuns evil and seeks to do good, is it permissible to respond to his request to let him go free? Islam says yes, and there are some fuqaha’ who say that this is obligatory and some who say that it is mustahabb. This is what is called a mukaatabah or contract of manumission between the slave and his master. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And such of your slaves as seek a writing (of emancipation), give them such writing, if you find that there is good and honesty in them. And give them something (yourselves) out of the wealth of Allaah which He has bestowed upon you” [al-Noor 24:33]

Man is to treat his wife as he would treat Christ the Lord ... a man is not to defile his wife ... if the man no longer wants his wife he then should release her by divorce.

    • @hildamorrison2003
      @hildamorrison2003 Před 4 lety

@@Egyptbalti Originally, when a man & woman marries - they both leave the family home. Together, they become one in the home they build together wherever that may be. The husband buys the house, the wife helps to look after it along side of her husband. They discuss who does what & share doing the work that needs to be done... Most men (not all) want the privileges of being married but don't want the expense. Some want children but don't want to look after them. Some women are the same. You raise your children (or child) together & hope they grow up to be successful in the work they choose to do. When you leave the family home when you marry, your parents are no longer responsible for looking after you. Some children never leave home because it's easier for them to live off their parents hardworking money than for them to go out to work. Is it right for a man to divorce his wife just because he met some other woman who's younger (or older) & has money even though he never wanted his own wife to work & have money? You see, if a wife doesn't have her own money & the husband agrees to divorce, how is she to live? A lot of men marry for the following reasons: 1. Love (as it starts out in the beginning when they marry young) 2. Money 3. They want children (or a child) 4. Want a house 5. They want to leave the family home to live a better life ... After they're on their own, they realize it's not so easy (thus read #1 to #5) ... a divorce allows the woman the same privileges as a man to be with someone else or remain single ... Understand that a lot of men do see a woman more as a maid or slave having to do whatever he commands & more so when he's been given everything & anything by his mother using her husband's money. If a woman lives even in the same town as her mother, when things get tough she always runs home to mom. A man does the same ... When man & woman move away from both families, they have to make things work - together ... by doing so, they learn how to on their own ... if you are married & still depend on your parents to give you the things you want you never learn how to get it on your own ... then when your husband decides to divorce you & keeps everything you worked hard to get while married because it was his money - you start all over again getting your own stuff with your own money ... what a lot of men forget is the following about their wife: 1. She cooks, cleans & does laundry for him but never is paid money 2. Some wives shovel snow, cut the lawn, paint, etc. (which would normally be considered husband's job) but she doesn't receive any money to do it... So if a man doesn't give his wife money for all the work that he would have to do on his own or pay someone else to do it - she's better off being on her own earning her own money & not relying on him ... so if there is a divorce, who's better off - the husband who demands or expects you to do everything for him (because he doesn't want or know how to do it for himself) or the wife who already knows how to do those things to take care of herself? And where do you go after the divorce? Most go back to mom & dad's instead of being on their own or they make sure they live close enough for the - just in case I need money. If you marry the first man or woman who you connected with, it doesn't mean they're the person you need in your life ... sit down & write down what your needs are ... 1. Money 2. House (shelter & warmth) 3. Water 4. Food anything else are wants - you just have to decide how much you want to pay. No matter what you pay, eventually it breaks down or needs fixing in one way or another ... Get the things you need before you get married then decide if you need or want to get married - there's a difference.

Hilda Morrison i agree with you in it all but that is why divorce is as mohamed saw said : it is the worst allowed thing.. so it is allowed but it is the worst.. but also i should mention to you sometimes after you marry someone you think no he is not the one for you or you liked someone else or your husband started to treat you badly .. this is why you can take a divorce.. sometimes you think he is THE ONE but after some while you think no he is not so divorce is a solution to a lot of problems. Yes, the woman does a lot but in islam it is not the woman’s duty to clean or cook if she refuses he should get her a servant even if she doesn’t want to be pregnant he should accept it .. and the man is forced to get her money .. but if a wife cleans and so it is ok she also take reward from god for doing so but it is as she wants

    Sorry, where is the logic?
There is no force in Islam.
Based on this, when a Slave woman was married, first she had to agree on that, because there is no force in Islam and the believing Women in Islam have rights and the speech is about believing "Slave"women ( "Prisoners." of war? ) Now it has to be checked, if that translation into the word slave would be correct!
Or was she forced to marry in old times and after that marriage she got her rights as a wife? This does not match with Prophet Muhammads (saw) teachings, sorry.
Our Prophet (saw) was freeing Slaves and they were following him as free men and still it is belonging to Islam to free people out of Slavery.
That means that our prophet (saw) more loved to see free human than enslaved. That is the only true and right view for someone who can think logically and knows about Islam even if only from basics.
There is a straight difference in between a prisoner ( of war ) and a Slave.
Prophet Mohammed (saw) was changing an already existing habbit of Generations before.
In Islam you shall FREE Slaves and only those who came as Slaves, were already owned by someoneelse before and got freed trough to Prophet (saw). And the Prisoners had a Chance to learn Islam and become free as wifes when they were believers. As believers and followers of Islam they were no enemies .
    Knowledge is key.
