Only 10% of Ferrari’s 15,000 F430s were specified with a manual gearbox, and now that the fascination with paddle shift has died down, are those cars now the most desirable?
What was once clunky and old tech, is now visceral and revered.
This week, #DriveEveryFerrari brings you a stunning Rosso Corsa 11,000 mile manual F430 belonging to CarGuys.tv viewer, Greg. So that means a look at the car in detail, its history, its engine, its special features, and of course a spirited drive.
We also get to answer the question - just how much of an improvement is the 458 Italia over the F430? And what’s it like compared to the previous 360 Modena/ Challenge Stradale?
Drive Every Ferrari is a series within the main TheCarGuys.tv channel, which aims to get behind the wheel of every Ferrari road car from the company’s origins right up to present day. It’s going to be extremely tough to get them all, but with your help, we’ll get there.
If you have a Ferrari that hasn’t been covered yet, please get in touch and see if your car can be the star of a future episode. Email: Damian@thecarguys.tv

A beautiful car and maybe the last model that delivers the Ferrari feeling I want. To me this is a much more desirable car than the 458. And the manual gearbox is a must have!
And at the same time we all say the same about the 458 vs. the 488, the newer car only became more artificial, to the point now where the F8 Tributo doesn't feel like a Ferrari at all.
I had a 458 Italia for a year - I was the only person in the UK it seemed who thought the 458 was (for public roads) too fast, too many revs needed to hit sweet spot, too digital, too grippy and terrible harsh gearbox esp on downshifts - So, sold it and bought a tour de France blue 360 manual at 1/3 price - bit ugly compared to a 355 but the best drivers piccolo Ferrari since the 246 imho.
@@paulthorpe766 Exactly! You don’t need the newest development to create a great driving experience on public roads, it’s quite the opposite. The 360 manual is a fantastic car! I never owned one, but I drove one around the alps for 3 days back in 2000 when it was quiet new to the market. Never forget that experience. I think the 360 looks great as well.
Hmmmmm but some of us don’t like the chiselled features like Brad Pitt, we prefer smoother, rounder healthier, curvier and stronger Damien Butt.
In the east, Brad Pitt would look like an under nourished middle aged fisherman, where as Mr Butt would look more like a super star🤩
@@alimuzhussain8394 Ha Ha Ha, and that is why we should all stay in our own countries. Not PC I know but ...I like Jim Davidson too.
Such a pretty car, just love the curves, manual gearbox and the old school sound. I'm not a fan of modern supercars however technically advanced they may be.
When I want to enjoy a car, I want to have to drive it, rather than one that does it all for me.
That's why this is my favorite Ferrari.
The carbon seats and breaks make the F430 the perfect last manual before the video game era Ferrari’s. F430 manuals in the US are similar to the equivalent 458’s, I chose the 430 as a better road car experience, not quite so mental more maximum potential can be wrung out on a B road.
Love it!
I prefer brakes than breaks on my cars.
I have a 430 manual with factory carbon buckets…totally agree…peak analog
@@p.h.234 Breaks on Ferraris are very, very, very expensive.....
@@neilgaydon5430 mines F1 with carbon seats and breaks, may be manual by next year…..
Imagine if they’d kept the manuals longer. A 458 manual would have been perfect.
That was literally the comment I was about to post. I wont bother. that would have been as somebody large scruffy and rich said " Genesis"
They weren’t selling enough of the manuals.
@@andrewhurstcars Yup but in hindsight?
Imagine a manual Enzo
@@Boyzee355 you can get a manual 599 which has the same engine to be fair…
Back in the day I was so enamored with the Ferrari 360 and especially the Challenge Stradale, that it took a long time for me to warm up to the F430. When the 458 Italia came out I forgot about the F430, but still loved (and still do) the 360. But I'm coming back around to the F430 lately.
That interior is pristine. I can see why you were so apprehensive. Wow... Also love the 6 speed manual. EAG in the US is doing quite a few conversions on 360/430 as well as 612's and 599's.
Is this a concourse example?
The f430 is a stellar car for the money. My first Ferrari was a f430 and, though I have others in my garage, I still regret selling her. I had a GTC exhaust which made her sing. The baffled exhaust of the 458 is a real disappointment; however, one can drop the diffuser and plug the vacuum lines. This simple trick fixed my biggest problem with the 458. After 30 minutes of modest labor, the 458 sounds like a proper Ferrari at all times. Thanks for yet another excellent Car Guys episode.
My favourite ferrari of all time, after seeing one in marbella as a child, I was in awe of this car, one day I will own one 🤞
I understand the attraction for a manual but for me growing up the flappy paddle gearbox was cool and exciting and so I wanted the F1 gearbox on my 360…although I think upgrading the TCU to the CS is a worthwhile upgrade
This is the one I will pine for for the rest of my days.
Good Lord this car is beautiful - both in looks and sound.
Being handicapped there will never be a Ferrari in my future, sadly.
I wouldn’t say that, there are some incredible controls that could be fitted these days - keep the dream alive!
Man that is a lovely motor. Sounds awesome when extended. Must cost a fortune to keep a car in such condition. Kudos to the owner
Spot on with your summarization. Always preferred it to the 360 but the 458 blew it away and is still one of my all time favourites.
Ur thoughts are spot on. F430 owner here who has also driven the 458 hard and almost every model after. The F430 sounds the best hands down. Succesors are faster and more refined inside and out. Id argue that the F1 transmission allows the driver to better experience the F430 in its own way. An example would be at the track. Upshifts and Downshifts in race mode with exhaust valve overide is the ultimate sound. Hope you get to enjoy that one day. You will know what i mean.
Love this series, can't wait to see what's next!
Holy cow, that's the cleanest F430 I have ever seen, it looks better than new. I love the F430, it's gorgeous, the 458 is just hideous to me. My neighbor has a red 16M Spider and I just love it.
The 16M is special
Have you seen a 458 in person? When I did I changed my dream car from F430 to 458
@@jafooli Yes, I own 2
@@TheCarGuysTV I think jafooli was asking venom if they’ve ever seen a 458 in person
Another brilliant episode! Absolutely loving this series. Well researched. Great points. Thanks for this content!
👍🏻👍🏻
I was lucky enough to spend three days in Modena back in 2007 driving 430s and 599s on the Fiorano race track. The main difference, apart from power, between the 430 and 599, for me, was how much better and faster was the gear shift of the 599 over the F1 gearbox on the 430. At the end of our time with the cars, the management brought out a manual 430 for a short time. There was a rush to drive it, but as I was in on of the 599s at the time, I never got the opportunity, which I have always regretted. Great review of a beautiful car!
Another excellent review from Damien.. I loved the 430. Sensational engine note, as exhibited here. Superb example of a great Ferrari. Loving the series.. nice wrist jewellery too.
👍🏻
Just bumped into this channel and checked out the video list. I’m hooked, great content!
Welcome aboard
You had me laughing hard at forgotten Ferrari lol! Definitely not forgotten by me, I own both a Scuderia and a 2008 manual transmission coupe. I paid more for the manual transmission car than they paid for my 4000 mile Scud. I could never get really excited about the 458 for 2 reasons: it never sounded right, and it felt too big. To me, the F430 generation is truly the best. By the way, my manual transmission car has ceramic brakes which appear to be exact same spec as the ones on my Scud. I feel truly blessed to own the two cars that I have. God willing, I will eventually buy a Speciale or a Speciale Aperta. But, not because I’m in love with those cars, rather only because they are the last naturally aspirated special Ferraris. My heart will always be the 430 generation.
I love the 430 generation. But 458 took it to the next level
@@jafooli I don’t buy cars on looks alone. Especially $250K cars 😂😂
Forgotten Ferrari would be 612 imo
@@richboy900 yes, I would agree. I would like to forget the F8 as soon as possible. Along with the Portofino.

You Sir, are my Official Ferrari Online Historian. No one else talks about the Details, Heritage and Technology of Ferrari like you.
Much appreciated
Euro rules that's why the cars don't sound like this anymore! About the manual gearbox, the changes get better the more the car is used, this car is not being used as it should, the mileage is very low for the age of the car! I recently drove a 430 Spider manual with just over 52000km the car is just perfect! Not to mention the Novitec exhaust! Just on point! Great content!
not just the rules.. turbocharged flat plane engines just sound CRAP compared to NA ones.
F430 with a manual is perfection
Thanks Damien. I have a 430 coupe manual with factory carbon bucket seats & for UK roads it’s magical…beauty, size, power, speed, noise, with the most engaging, enveloping, involving drive. Peak analogue.
Very nice!
My uncle owned a black/black F430 spider with a gated manual. Sold it for a 458.
Such a great example and F430 always looks best on the optional wheels
Enjoyed from intro to wrap up! Made me a fan of the F430 manual! Glorious!!
👍🏻👍🏻
Great video as always thank you
👍🏻👍🏻
Fantastic review 👍🏻 All the lovely details highlighted and pleasantly presented.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you Greg for sharing your amazing car. And thank you Darien for this video and for making this interesting series.
It is funny how much more you like driving a manual Ferrari. Your film makes me want a manual transmission Ferrari again.
Damian, great video. Absolute pleasure to share my car😀👍
Awesome - glad you liked it. Thanks again!
Greg, you have a beautiful car
Greg, have you had any problems with your headers yet ? I watch Normal Guy Supercar (Dan), he owned a 430 and had his headers crack and a few of his friends who have 430’s have also had their header crack
@@charlie1832 Thanks Charlie, it has the upgraded headers from Ferrari, no problems with them
@@charlie1832 Hi Charlie, No problems personally, the originals were replaced before I owned it with the Ferrari upgraded ones and so far so good..
Perfect. Maybe this should have been the last episode. How will you cap this? Thank you for the inspiration. I'm now off to my desk to work some more.
What a nice example...Greg deserves an award for his superb stewardship of this lovely car...🤤 I feel a bit sorry for those poor Alpacas though! 😲 Lol! Great vid, Damian! 👍🏻😄
Thanks, Peter
There is quite simply NOT a way I would have EVER driven that better-than-new off the showroom floor 430! Oh my God…and a manual to boot! Another fine and objective video, Damian.
Keep driving…Every Ferrari!
P.S. How did the owner get that car in such pristine condition?
F430s sound amazing. Thankfully by the F430, the F1 system was much more refined and enjoyable. These are just timeless. I’ll throw the argument that I actually think the F430 looks better than the 458 due to the side air intakes. 458 has them hidden. I prefer the more aggressive lines of the F430. But I’m bias, no wrong answers here.
Yes you're very biased if you think the 430 looks better.
@@h2wr how subjective. You are as well if a hidden intake/no side intake 458 looks better.
@@DoWorkExotics How can you base your entire opinion of a car on an intake? Absolutely absurd.
@@h2wr the side dual intakes look better than the lack of side intakes on the 458. Simple. So design wise, I prefer the 430. When you look out the side mirrors, the front, etc. of the 430 you see the intakes. It make it look like an exotic car and flows well with the body.
@@DoWorkExotics 🙄 OK, @I lovetheF430IntakesEXOTICS, it's seems you're still missing the point that the F430 doesn't stack up in comparison to the design of the 458. But that's understandle since your blindsided love of side intakes impedes your ability to truly understand what a good design is. It's obvious we will never come to a satisfactory resolution to this dispute but I'm OK with that because at the end of the day everyone knows which car really looks better.
Love these videos!!! So much easier to watch than a Shmee150 video , really informative but not a nerdy way …
Thanks, James
GREAT review Damian! A stunning F430 example can't hurt, but still one of the best on a prancing horse I've ever seen. 🔥🏁
I typically prefer lighter interiors myself here in Florida, but those Daytona seats in a lighter cream delicious as they look(red accents/stitching!) feel a bit extreme in the keep clean dept(huge kudos to Greg!). But being just a tick over 30 min from Daytona & grown up at that track I'd probably even like them in fly yellow! 😆
Will definitely check out your other recent

Thank you for this guide
Love it! Thanks
Nice, I have one, it's an amazing car and yes I chose it over a 458 because of the manual gearbox. Love the wheels on this car! Interesting to see it's the most watched episode in the "Drive Every Ferrari" series at the moment..!
Id take this over the 458 all day just for the nostalgia factor i owned miniature ferrari toys around this era. Its either this or the 599 gto
It's still sooo beautiful and the sound is still amazing!

Massive review Damian. Loved it. Have you been working out:):):):)
No, the t-shirt arms are just too tight 👍🏻
Great review and an absolute minter car! Cheers Damian 👍🏻👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
I would love to see a comparison between this and a 360 manual, I am sure the F430 (manual) is a better car overall but, is it really worth double the money?!
This could be a great opportunity to make a video with Sam (STG) and his beautiful 360.
Rocco commenting on manual ferrara ;)
The 360 is better looking and sounds far better.
@@feelsgoodman245 does it drive better tho? Also a 430 is much more better built than those old plastic filled 360s ,i still love the 360 more tho
That would be a cool collab!
The 360 costs double to maintain! Not that either is going to be cheap to run
Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder and to me the 430 is the best looking of all the V8s. But all I can do is just look at it.
Brown Slacks , very rightfully respectful Damian. Thought I had some clean cars in the motor trade, this one actually is brand new

One of the best looking road ferraris, just the right level of analog, the advantage over later models which will be quickly outdated with aging technologies.
imho the profile and the rear of this car are masterpieces, I am missing Pininfarina's designs, the new cars look more complex and generic, when this original design was art. I have a coupe 430, I won't be selling it soon :)
Great content Damian, please keep up with it! Even though I don’t believe the F430 is the most beautiful Ferrari made, thanks to the manual gearbox I still believe it’s the real deal!
The best 3 colours for the F430 imo are obviously Rosso Corse, TdF Blue and Grigio Silverstone. All look immense on that bodywork..👍👍
Lovely. I think the 458 onwards, Ferrari's are better in every way you can measure. Pre 430's in manual form, it's about feel, noise, character and your connection with the car. I love the earlier stuff for that reason.
Loving the series.
Lovely car. Nice editing Damian. Fun fact: I think the F430 is the only car to have the model name on the wing mirrors.
F40 comes to mind but i may be wrong.
Lovely touch.

One of my favourite Ferrari to be honest. With a manual box of course. In blue preferably.

Every day is a school day :)
The Ferrari F430 would be the first one I would ever buy. Sadly can't afford the keyring, let alone the car! 😩
Nothing beats the beans!!!
Wow, that’s looks and sounds absolutely amazing 🏁👍

That is the only Ferrari i have ever driven myself (rental), but with the F1 Gearbox. Need a lottery win ;-)
That one is a Duraglit polished can of Heinz Beans. The only model I have driven, although it was the F1. Gorgeous example and a privilege to be allowed to have a thrash in it. 👏👍
Same here its the only Ferrari Ive driven also the F1box. Had a 20 minute blast in one Thrilling got out shaking from the adrenalin. A Manual Spider would be epic also for me in Australia the RHD manuals are like unicorns.
This Car is special to me as the only Ferrari I have driven. Good to see it here!
Damian, I nearly spat out my sauvignon blanc with laughter at the cuts to the manual gearbox with epic choir music 😂

If I was to buy used , it would be from Greg , if I was to let somebody else drive it,then only the reverence you showed ( changing the trousers) would do 😂Another brilliant episode and omg the level of that 430
A very good review of a very good car, a particularly fine example. But I think I would struggle to keep it in what amounts to showroom condition. At the end of the day, it's a wonderful car and needs to be driven and enjoyed. I read an article recently about a chap who'd restored an early E Type to such a standard that he only ever drove it in his socks and then spent ages cleaning it after each use. I think that's a bit obsessive.
I agree
I am glad you enjoyed the F430,but did you stop to think think there is also a manual F430 spider .How do you fancy driving that. Hope you get the chance, and that you feature it in a video.I enjoyed your video, the only gripe is you could have shown more footage of the car driving around, from the outside, preferably at speed.Otherwise a good enjoyable road test, and quite satisfying to watch.
Thanks for all the great videos. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 I don’t want to be a troll but…. Why repeat that the car is in good condition so many times, we are want to hear your thoughts on the F430 manual, how clean that particular car is is not interesting. Thanks again for taking us along and allowing. All the best!
Best video so far.
Another Good production
It seems that the way you explain the feel is like analog VS digital. The 458 being more digital and 430 being the analog step before.
Great video I sent you a message on about driving a couple of cars
What an incredible example of a dream Ferrari. Smart people tucked these away a while ago when prices are not what they are now. Alas I was not one of them but grateful to indulge in your review video. What a grail example 🙂
It really is
@@TheCarGuysTV the Ferrari series is a complete treat to watch ( am sure not a hardship for Damian either! ). The series will provide a wonderful antidote to the EV years ahead 👍
F1 gearbox suits more that kind of a high reving engine and is a lot better experiance with it. Better than a manual although i understand that manual bla bla thing, but seriously if it's a fast F1 it is a lot better experiance.

Good for you 👍🏻
its never a forgotten ferrari for me its one of the most iconic eras it whats a time when schumi was with ferrari
I'm so old I thought this was modern 😅
This car in yellow with a manual gearbox would be a dream car
and the 360 Modena would also be one of my dream cars
This and an F12 please. Perfect two car garage.
That car looks too nice to actually use.
It all comes down to personal preference. Having owned a 16M and a Speciale Aperta I far preferred the analogue and raw nature of the 430. The Aperta was indeed a dramatic evolution in all aspects including the wonderful double clutch gearbox. But that is the problem, it became too digitised and I felt like I could drive it all day. In comparison, after an hour of spirited driving in the 16M I was exhausted. The Scud / 16m will be remembered as the last of the analogue and old-school mid-engine Ferrari experience. Given the choice between F430 and Italia, I would choose the 458 whereas I would choose the Scud over a Speciale or Pista.
V interesting
Not long ago, Ferrari publicly announced that they will never offer a manual transmission again. But never say never. I bet they will re-offer it one day, on a limited production, special edition model. Time will tell.
I fancied a 430. But when I saw the 458, the 430 was out. Nonetheless this feature in my opinion contents a bit too much 458 references. It's a bit unfair to compare a car to its successor because the newer car mostly also is the better one. Don't get me wrong: I love my 458 Spider and never would swap it for another Ferrari but this episode was supposed to be about the 430. 😉
Lovely car, would love to see a comparison between this and paddle shifter. Same with 355 between the hard top, targa and spyder
Good stuff - STD 360 manual my fave on the noughties, just find it more engaging than 430 - early F1 ruined the 360/430/612/575 !
I’d love one but could not afford a manual. When I decide to part ways with my Exige 410 an F1 will definitely be high on the replacement list.
A regular manual 430 spider with 11k miles just sold for $400,000 in the USA at auction in April
