2022 Ducati Streetfighter V4 SP - First Ride Review

  • Riding the wave of success from the Ducati Panigale V4 SP - all of them sold out within a week - Ducati saw it fit to give the Streetfighter V4 the SP treatment, too. So now we get the almighty Streetfighter, one of our favorite motorcycles, in an even more track-focused trim. The big changes include carbon fiber wheels, a dry clutch, and Öhlins suspension lifted straight off the Panigale. The result is a wild beast of a Streetfighter, made even more refined. And guess what? All of these are sold out, too.
So rare is the Streetfighter V4 SP that Motorcycle.com was chosen as the only North American publication invited to test the bike at the Cremona Circuit in northern Italy. Road Test Editor Troy Siahaan was lucky enough to get the call to ride it. Here are his thoughts.

After 1 yr of a SFV4S I bought an SP and I can tell that is a completely different bike.
I drove last 1500 miles in Sardinia (Italy) with 1 track day and All I can say is..amazing. With these wheels the handling is of another planet and I had 20 bikes in last 40 yrs..
I think it is one of the few elite bikes that are worth the higher price compared to the ‘normal’ versions. For tall guys like me the higher position of the footpegs may be a bit uncomfortable even in the lower level especially if track use is a mere 10% of the total.

I'm failing to see the point of these stupid 200+ hp naked bikes. They have much much less street practicality than their namesake and less-plastic ethos suggests. They are nothing but a Panigale with a handlebar, and stupider aerodynamics.

Both bikes are professional bikes in that unless your a professional with abilities to take bikes in the grey zones, 100%~110%, probably not notice the difference. But that little extra in the right hands wins the race or not. The bike is a tool but the rider makes the difference if that bike has that extra capability that a better rider can use. An attorney graduating from Yale has the extra opportunities that Yale offers but you must be enough to know how to use those opportunities. Lol!

Too much for the street? I enjoy my Super Duke because all the horsepower/torque all
below 9500 rpm, streetable rpm. The Ducati beautiful as semi naked but I like seeing the whole engine. Along with my Super Duke, I recently purchased a MV AGusta Dragster 800rr Pirelli Edition. I might of purchased the Streetfighter but V4 not really visible. Ducati makes sexy bikes

    • @exothermal.sprocket

While the Streetfighter is trying to get the RPM up, something like a Gen2 Vmax or a xDiavel or even a lowly 1250 Bandit would be peeling rubber off the rear tire FLYING away from a stoplight. Motorcycle manufacturers have seemingly forgotten about the era of bikes that made easy stupid torque right off idle, were fun below 120 mph, and didn't cost what a new car costs.

@@markjones464 ZX-14R and 3rd gen Hayabusa are way more practical, very very fast, super smooth, comfortable, mile munchers than any of these whack 200+ hp naked racing bikes. I think people have bought the marketing nonsense about what these naked superbikes are, and ignoring the obvious reality that they are merely stupidly high-strung racing bikes with a handlebar, who make far less power than their peak numbers suggest in most practical settings on the street, lack real grunty torque, and cost ridiculous prices. Meanwhile the ZX and Busa could cruise at 150 mph tankful after tankful, consuming rear tires day after day and never break a sweat. And all people whine about is the weight. Pop a 4-2-1 exhaust, lithium battery, and a set of forged wheels on either one and they drop over 40 pounds and handle much more nimbly than they have any right to. Do a search for "Hayabusa gymkhana" on CZcams and see what a "portly huge sportbike" can do. People lack skills to exploit ANY bike they ride, and no amount of money can buy skills. Neither the ZX-14R and Hayabusa make as much peak power as a tuned Panigale V4R. Big deal. They do however, make 30-40 ft-lb more torque while putting down near 200 wheel HP, and are NOT stressed out high strung motors.

So it makes a lot of power. It cooks the thighs and genitalia. It looks a little goofy and is completely impractical in terms of holding anything but a single person on the seat with zero room for even a sandwich.
So what do we have to pay for this privilege? About the cost of a new car in 2018.
I can have a boat load of fun on a 890 Duke R, Z900SE, XSR900, Monster, GSX-S1000, Hypermotard, CB1000R, and others without paying more than double.
All of these "racing bikes with a handlebar" bikes out there are 95% as focused as a full fairing racing bike. And 100% just as impractical.
We would love all the power of a V4 1100 in something much more practical, with an actual subframe, with an actual tank range, with actual upright comforts, with an actual comfortable seat that can do a few hours. No, the Multistrada Pikes Peak is NOT that bike. That bike is a portly, ADV-esque, dedicated styling bike.
