  • Peter forgiving the Sandman is one of the most powerful moments in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy, and I wanted to talk about it.

On paper it has some good ideas, but it’s not firing on all cylinders. I think the main issue Spiderman 3 has is, ironically, trying to do too much at once, probably best demonstrated with the villains. New Goblin, Sandman, and Venom all introduced and two thirds of them killed off, all within one film!
Of course it's gonna be nigh impossible to execute that well!
But despite this, it still has the signature Raimi soul. The goofiness, the sincerity, the dedication to the themes.

Such an underrated scene. In the previous movies, the philosophy of "we always have a choice" was an overarching message. Rather than focusing on the choices of Spiderman, this movie focused on the choices of a villian, whose decisions to rob and murder feel so vial and disgusting. Only for Peter to understand later that Sandman acted in the interest of saving his daughter, he realizes he isn't the only one who has made tough choices in life. In the end, Peter acknowledges the pain he has caused others and forgives the man who had killed his father figure.
A 10/10 scene that should receive much more analysis than it does.

This film is an anomaly, as its categorised as a bad superhero film. Often when you consider bad superhero films, Green Lantern, Blade Trinity, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Suicide Squad etc spring to mind.
Sadly, Spiderman 3 is unfairly mentioned in the same breath because it makes some weird and inexplicable choices. However, there are so many things it does well that it's almost criminal to call it a bad film. It most definitely is not a bad film.
Some of the action is breathtaking, the scene where Flint becomes Sandman is hauntingly beautiful, Harry's arc comes to an end in heroic yet tragic fashion and as you've pointed out, the theme of revenge and forgiveness for the most part is admirably handled.
Despite its shortfalls, this is a worthy addition to the trilogy and unlike TDKR. The Spiderman trilogy feels incomplete without part 3. But I honestly think The Dark Knight is a masterpiece if viewed as a Duology and only above average if viewed as a trilogy (Yes I think TDKR sucked).

Imagine if there'd been a scene earlier in the film where Peter actually meets Flint Marko's daughter Penny, and learned the truth while he was still under the impression that he'd actually killed Sandman? It would be then that Peter would realize just what he had done. In his carelessness, and selfishness, he'd taken a sick little girl's father away from her, not avenged his Uncle Ben's death on a cold-blooded murderer. As this realization sinks in, he would recall Aunt May's words "Revenge is like a poison. It takes us over. And before you know it, it turns you into something ugly.", and possibly even Uncle Ben's words "With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility". Peter runs away in horrified remorse, and, this coupled with how he'd hurt MJ, and Harry, is what makes Peter finally get rid of the black suit. Later, Peter not only tries to give back the wedding ring to Aunt May, but he also almost quits being Spider-Man again, believing that he'd failed as a hero. But then, Venom, and Sandman make their movie in the climax, forcing Peter back into action.

Despite its problems, I feel like the greatness outweighs the flaws. It still feels like a grounded piece of fiction, a look into pride and ego, owning up to your mistakes and being honest with yourself and others, and then…..forgiveness. What I love the most about Spider-Man 3 is this movie is not a movie ruined by studio interference, it’s a movie that is actively FIGHTING against studio interference. Because Venom and part of Harry’s arc is trying to drown this film, but it’s doing it’s best to stay afloat and to be sincere. And this movie for the most part succeeds in being sincere.
