I would never have guessed this would be my longest video yet; what started out as a pretty simple character study slowly became an extensive evaluation of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Coming out just before Marvel and DC locked course into their respective universes, it’s just such a fascinating and unique set of superhero films. And yes, after having rewatched them all back to back in one day, I can still say they’re among my favorites.

Excellent video. People love to hate this trilogy but ive never understood why. I think youre right, i think its _because_ hes so relatable. People think a lot of fans love Tobey over Tom simply because it's nostalgia. But the original trilogy had so much more depth than our current Spiderman. Thank you for explaining that
To be fair, I think that Marvel's plan was to use each movie as a third of an origin story that each taught him a different lesson.

Damn. This really hit home. Being in a situation that requires me to give up a lot of my personal time and ambitions to take care of a relative with dementia, this video got me wondering if my depression is just a reflexion of my own feelings of grandiosity. I haven't achieved anything of what I wanted in life (humble as those hopes and desires were, nothing like saving the world or marrying into royalty) but my current situation has me feeling trapped and very hopeless. I want to do the right thing, to be the person that I need to be right now for someone else's sake, but damn if I don't feel unjustly punished by fate. Giving up part of yourself really is part of behaving like a hero, but it's much easier when it's in the movies. I'm not comparing myself to a hero or anything; I'm in fact realizing my distress is just that dragon not liking to be flicked on the snout and told to keep quiet because more important things are going on right now.

A noble and illuminated soul is required in someone, to take such close care of another. Grandiosity? I see something truly grand in the love you steadfastly hold onto. There are men who create buildings, who fight wars, who move nations, and they are often the smallest and most insignificant men alive. There is something powerful and present and beautiful within you, palmieres. Keep alive that love in your heart. A single day is not forever.

I´m in the same situation. We should make a film out of it. Well, my case is just elderness and sickness. But, unlike Japanese people, perhaps ours culture don't know how to take care of oneself and others.

Dude, your video made me feel emotions while watching this. For the longest time I thought this film was campy and far too edgy. However, you explained why Spider-man 3 isn't just a unique movie tackling a important message, but what it does differently that other films of it's kind haven't done before or since. What an incredible video, keep it up.

I never thought Spiderman 3 was bad. Personally, I really enjoyed it even considering it one of my favorites. It wasn't until not even that long ago that I came across people on the internet who thought it was a horrible movie. I think you absolutely nailed the meaning of this movie. I honestly needed to hear this. Very well done! Whats more is there are other movies and media that the same type of thing has happened where I enjoyed it and then I come to a realization that it apparently is considered a "bad" movie by the masses. I understand people all have their different opinions but its like a negative virus that spreads and infects a lot of people kinda like venom.

Spiderman 3 is still my favourite Marvel movie. I couldn't understand why people hated it or why I liked it so much. Now its quite clear. Maybe my inner dragon was attracted to what was depicted so wonderfully by Sam Raimy.
I'm not a fan much of marvel. Winter Soldier is overrated and to me their worst movie.

Anupam G I take 3 as the worst of the trilogy, but that doesnt make it bad, it's actually pretty damn entertaining and it makes me laugh from time to time (mostly the "scene", if you know what I'm talking about).
It get's a lot of undeserved hate. It has its flaws, but it's still a great movie, and the final scene is the perfect end to the trilogy. I like how this video interpreted the ending. Never really considered why I like the ending so much. But it's because the movie ends with just MJ and Peter. Not Spider-man, not a teaser for the next movie in the cinematic universe. Just two humans. I think many modern superheroes forget these aspects and get wrapped up in their cinematic projects. Another reason I think Wonder Woman clicked with a lot of people. Despite Diana being a God, we related to her desire to do good, and how useless she felt to stop human suffering despite being the strongest person in the war. I find MCU films to be quite entertaining, but they never connect on a more human level (i'm scared to see what Marvel will do to X-men), which is something I always liked about early 2000's hero films.

Bastian I also cried because of how deep I could relate to all the situations and how deep this person was willing to go to explain a movie in detail. I loved how all the things were connected and how this guy related a superhero movie with intrapersonal issues. This is what a movie review is for me, it’s about pulling out the messages that can be applied to our daily lives.
This reminds me of One Punch Man. he always dreamed of being a hero that could take down his enemies in one punch, and when he became the hero that could do that, he lost all his humanity

Great vid. I've always defended this movie.
Though venom didn't entirely work, I believe the real villain of this film was the symbiote itself. It concludes with Peter taking out the physical representation of his dark side or his choice to become like the villains he usually confronts.
I used to hate this movie completely...I think I really can appreciate it now.
I can appreciate it but it still did a lot of things wrong. The dance scene just wasn't needed and the whole portrayal of these complex emotions in one movie left for one bumpy ass ride. At the end of the day it was a spider-man film and the studio tried making it too much more. Sandman could have been removed and the whole film would have had room to breathe with venom and harry which where rushed anyway. The trilogy lacked scope and room for a spider-verse. Either the villain dies or becomes friendly, not leaving room for any returns. A self suffocating move with each movie release, which I'm sure is why they just bottled it and re-booted.
@@CrackedTubeGamer it suffered from its own sense of grandiosity. Raimi had a vision for what he wanted, but had to work around 3 villains. I agree that sandman was redundant. I know Raimi liked him but he really hindered the flow of the movie. Venom making Peter more aggressive was already sufficiently shown in his conflict with Harry. Sandman was virtually omnipresent and omnipotent, so it felt pointless every time the movie showed him being "defeated."
I don't think these movies needed to set up a spider-verse, but even after killing off main villains there were still plenty of them to work with.
Sandman has never been an influential character; he's just the typical goon with cool abilities that gives the hero trouble. However, in this movie I feel he had a relevant purpose.
While his story is stagnant and he himself has no character development, he's used to showcase Peter's downfall and resolution the end.
Honestly, if Venom didn't exist, this movie would have had a great finale:
- Peter and Harry setting their differences aside and teaming up to defeat big Sandman, all tying with the whole forgiveness theme at the end. But one character couldn't forgive and ends up becoming Venon, teasing us for the next movie.

Jesus, how do you do it? Again your video hit me right in my soul. Grandiosity is indeed something I am having massive issues with currently, stemming from engineering concepts I'm desperate to pursue, though don't have the millions of dollars it would demand to start. I'm a humble person, quiet and sincere, even heartfelt, and I am almost entirely cut off from any measure of relationship with others. I haven't had closeness in my personal life for eighteen years, and at this point, I honestly don't know if I'll ever have that again. So I've poured my creativity into other things for so long. I don't know how to get out of this darkened place.
The old Spider-man trilogy has always been some of my favorite movies and has solidified him as my all time favorite superhero. How relatable his character has always been for me has always kept that foundation strong for me, and this video only serves to further enforce that. Thank you for such a great video

I’ve struggled with that kind of grandiose thinking for a long time, and I found a way to bring it back down to Earth through writing and just being around the right people. Absolutely beautiful. You made me look at Spider-Man trilogy by a entirely different perspective. This is what video essays should do, help us understand the meaning we may have overlooked and giving your own perspective not self repeating mediocre garbage channels that are out there in youtube.
Brilliant once again! I think this video shows how damaging nerd culture is for movies, the only criticism I've heard against this movie are don't like how Venom looks like and EMO Peter is so stupid. Underrated movie. I like most of MCU movies but I don't understand how those are hailed so much and SM3 is garbage.
Late answer but the simple reason is they are more consistent. While yes Spiderman 3 has amazing things in it the whole package is not as amazing. There are numerous problems throughout that are more severe than the MCU problems (not to say the MCU movies are perfect or anything). Think of it kinda like Zac Snyder's Batman v Superman or Man of Steel. Generally they are visually interesting even moreso than a lot of MCU movies. So if we were to weigh them against any of the phase 1 movies none of them can compete in that department. However once you take the movies as a whole is when those movies are easily overwhelmed by the MCU ones.
Also you must not be looking hard enough. People bring up Venom because of the appeal of venom. The major appeal was Venom contrasts Peter in every way. Eddie is this built up bruiser kinda guy who towers over our little hero. It also adds to his more monstrous appearance being this hulking figure. Not to mention every time we might be able to accept this venom the movie feels the need to pull back revealing his face. It is distracting. And rather than being turned into this monster we can never see him more than that other skinny guy. It robs him of feeling like a legitimate threat. He feels like a goon rather than a major antagonist. That is probaly because Raimi didn't even wanna put him in but was forced to. But we have to judge what we got. And what we got was a pathetic representation of a character that lost any legitimacy as a villain and was little more than an afterthought. And what makes them so frustrating is he is near Sandman who is a GREAT antagonist (might even be my favorite in the Trilogy honestly).
As for Emo Peter the problem isn't Peter being emo. Its the inconsistent tone. I mean have you see when its all silly while he dances with Gwen and then hits her and suddenly it is big and overdramatic. That mood whiplash is so drastic it can't be taken seriously. Instead of Peter feeling torn up inside we see the opposite. We should have seen hints of Venom but we really don't. The only thing you might say is his fight with Sandman in the suit but that's one scene and can just as well be applied to solely Peter. So in the end Emo Peter is bad for the same reason Venom is bad. They're both clearly afterthoughts.
For all their many many issues I wouldn't really say any MCU movie has this kinda after thought additions. So the movies feel more complete.
This is pleasantly surprising. Just earlier today, my friend and I were discussing why film criticism must account for temporality when analyzing a piece of art. So much criticism is of the moment, and we rarely think of art (especially with film) retrospectively, losing sight that a piece continues to exist past the time it is first released. Older superhero cinema (pre-Ironman) is a perfect example of how we forget to look at stories as distinct pictures. As the shadow of Phase One Marvel begins to wane, it's become relevant to revisit films such as Spider Man (1, 2, or 3) and how they may have aged in our consciousness without the burden of dismissive criticism to weigh down a film's ability to stand alone. What would be another good example of this? I'm sure there are many, and this isn't even a trend exclusive to just superhero films.

Seeing them multiple times over and over always gave me goosebumps, still having the same dreams of becoming that superhero I know and loved when I was in my adolescence. I always could relate to Peter and Aunt May's relationship, a relationship that made me reflect on my own with my mother when growing up. And now seeing this video you uploaded gives me a completely new perspective on the movie, as if I watched it again for the first time

I love the way you come full circle with analysis, processing and resolution of the story of a film that I have to admit did not care for at all. Having succeeded in awakening in me new fondness for these Sam Raimi movies AND giving me helpful pointers to resolve some things I personally struggle with at the moment, this video is worthy of the LSOO format I've come to love so much. Thank you so much for all of that.
The scene in which Harry dies was one of my favourite emotional scenes and as a teenager, it was and still to this very day, is one of my favourite movies. But I never understood why people hate it. And here you are, presenting an another whole different side of this movie. This video was in my watch later list and finally you did what you usually do: Amaze us with tear-jerking end. Spiderman 3 is a flawed movie but still an intelligent movie, and continues the previous two films beautiful balance of raising everyday struggles to mythological status while maintaing a grounded human connection.
The way I see it, it knew what it wanted to say, but the words came out wrong, but to some of us, we knew what it meant.
An 8 may be lesser than two 10s, but that doesn't make it a bad film.
What a wonderful, insightful video on what a hero carries along with responsibilities and superhuman powers like humility, flaws in character, the unimaginable sacrifices in everyday choices and the complexity with facing inferiority. I’m so glad I’m subscribed to this channel.

Man, i wished all your analyses went for this long. I work as a counsellor, and to see your work on love in Interstellar, your discussion of grief and The wild edge of sorrow, your recent analysis on the magician and the inner creation and attendance of oneself, to this regarding the societal and environmental development of narcissism and the removal of empathy, have been truly brilliant, insightful and on point.
I do, however, not think that there is a definitive amount of evil energy that can inhabit someone, and floats around at the ready. I think the development of narcissism, non empathy, decadence, our disposition to exist as consumers, coupled with our willingness to exploit others, locally or internationally, are societaly created and maintained. We develop our disposition to the world at a very young age, our parents and the world they have succumbed to, as well as the likely potential neglected traumas they carry, will both inhabit their children. Assuming the parent child rs is healthy however, beyond this realm, there is a world that thoroughly educates young girls and boys, men and women, through advertising, marketing, the celebrity culture and obsession with fame, that their value is hinged on their sexual value, financial value, social value. Coupled with the endless screens we carry around, where today, many exist more in this social media soma addicted world than they do beyond the screen.
This reality leads to a dissociation with ones actual self, because if we live by consumerism, capitalism, and the belief that our value is hinged on such things, we ourselves become to view ourselves as commodities, our children as accessories. And our emotional existence becomes in pain, slowly numbed out, into constant suppression.
The degree to which we neglect the numbed pain within, and our self, will be the degree to which we need more aggressive stimuli. For life, endlessly orbiting what we intentionally, consciously or not, are neglecting.
Reading alot of the comments on your videos, it is clear that through your beautiful, well-constructed, emotionally focused work touches and impacts many people. Its a beautiful transfer of your emotional and intellectual intelligence to everyone who listens, and probably to the people they relate to.

Rudolf Steiner talks about the Double entering the body of the human being at birth and leaving at death. This Double can only act in this material world and our responsibility to be vigilant to it's influence on our impulses is a ifelong one.
@@user-pr5dt4wi8o It’s not about shifting responsibility. Acknowledging interconnected cause and effect isn’t about assigning blame, or about assigning who cleans up the mess regardless of blame. The fact is that everything is connected to everything else, nothing is singular, nothing is unaffected by other things or exists in a vacuum. At the end of the day, of course, our choices are our own (even if free will is a myth - the reason it’s a myth is because of the very interconnectedness I’m talking about and how we are subconsciously and unconsciously shaped by it), and no one is responsible for the choices we make but us. But that doesn’t also mean what led us to those choices were not brought on by external forces - they always are. Whether it’s people we know, care for, despise, or it’s disease, death, or any number of socio-economic circumstances or all of these things combined, these things may not make our choices for us, but they Do influence us in ways we cannot control. We can only do our best to choose wisely despite (or because of) all these things.
And again, this doesn’t mean we Blame these external factors. Blame gets us nowhere. And we don’t shift responsibility to anyone beyond on ourselves when we are the ones who made a choice. But these factors simply Exist, and evil as an individual, whole phenomenon rather than as a set of actions and perverse perspective which develops over time, does Not exist. So it’s good to understand the factors that may lead to a choice, though that doesn’t mean they remove responsibility or take on blame. It’s an explanation, a reason, and not an excuse.

Though maligned when first released, Spider-man 3 has improved with time, especially compared with the thoughtlessness of the writing and directing in the two "Amazing Spider-Man" films that followed it. The end of S-M3, with its focus on mending relationships, felt like an anti-climactic end to the trilogy for me (perhaps because Ramie intended for there to be a fourth film) but under this context of the struggle with grandiosity, you've shown me how the ending nicely completes Peter's character arc.

It actually has me to giving serious reevaluation to the the nature of self and reflecting on my own struggles with ego/grandiosity and how it effects my relationships.
These lessons are going to stick with me going forward, at least I hope they do.

This. This is new favorite video of yours. Spider-man 3 is a mixed bag for me in which i don't hate it, it came out when i was 8 or 9. I hope you do more videos on comic book movies soon. I would suggest BvS for the viewpoints of both Batman and Superman to each other and how they both are similar and how they both deal with failures, mistakes. Which the both of them suffer from a disorder like being an Introvert, having PTSD etc. The true vision of a tragic hero story but they both pull through the darkness, manipulation, and personal failures. I hope you do more videos on comic book movies soon, i truly hope you do BvS as a video. Keep up the great work.

I actually enjoyed Batman v Superman more than the average viewer, especially the ultimate cut, but unfortunately I do think that the character arcs they set up in that film were pretty much botched in Justice League, which makes me more hesitant to dive into that series like I did with this one. But who knows, until about a month ago, I never expected to do video on Spider-Man 3 either ;)
Like Stories of Old Awesome for you to say that ! I think the Ultimate Edition is the definitive version of the film. They had amazing character development in that movie and to be completely destroyed by the reshoots for JL. I hope you did it soon ! Thanks once again !

I've been on a binge of your videos after discovering your channel yesterday; and at the ending of nearly every single one I have had the feeling of letting a single tear fall every time. When I saw this one, I thought to myself "okay there's no way I'm going to feel the tear-jerker on a video talking about Spider-Man 3"... but... I still did. You are very, very good at hitting home an emotional connection to the world.
Man, you just gave me a whole new outlook on myself. I was diagnosed with a narcissistic personality trait among other things after a psychological breakdown. Up until now I never knew what to do about it, I never viewed as a stepping stone but more as a finality that would rule me the rest of my days. But that distinction between the psychoanalytical and psychological viewpoint really hit home for me. It just opened a whole new door of places to go and things to master. Every video of yours I watch gives me so much to work with and work out psychologically, emotionally and existentially. I could never thank you enough for what you are doing. Please keep going, it is truly making a difference out here.

I have been a student of Robert Moore's work for a long time and his book Facing the Dragon changed my life as well as opened my eyes to what was happening within the people in my life and society as a whole. There where some things i wanted to say about this but by the end of the video you bring those points to life. Somehow you always manage to bring everything back around. somehow you always manage to leave something feeling complete and like theres nothing else that needs to be said on the subject. You ability to communicate a point and idea is amazing dude.
LSOO, I just wanted to give you my appreciation for the work you are doing. You and "Academy of Ideas" especially, bring forth a kind of motivation that goes beyond that "powered up" feeling you get from regular motivational videos. You give an psychological understanding of the self, tools to find individual greatness, and after that is found you give tools to understand how to apply that greatness for the collective well being. I won't say your videos changed my life, but every day I watch them they uncover a path in the mist of existence I personally find myself in from time to time. I feel like those videos are really something special and necessary, in a world, that seems to lose the connection to the greater source, that inner fire, continually. I wish you the best you need to continue what you do and keep up the amazing work.
This video is kind of brilliant. I've always liked Spider-Man 3, and one thing I've come to like about it is that the symbiote isn't "making him evil," but just drawing out negative personality traits he already displays in the first part of the movie. I will admit however that the sheen definitely wore off for me in the years that followed its release. I have a brand new appreciation for the film, and for the entire series after this video.

Spider-man has always been my favorite superhero and to really understand the "grandiosity" he had to deal with in this trilogy made me like him even more. Great work buddy! That's the founding meaning of this character, that was the lesson that made him Spider-Man, think about it, looking at the original comic, it was always about humility and grandiosity, from his spider bite, he was able to be more than what he was originally, and that got to his head (when he applied for show biz and letting the thief go) and that came at a cost, the death of his uncle was a blow to himself and those he loved, today the common trend is to strive for high goals and let nothing stop you, that is problematic and because people have been misled by it, thinking that achieving a goal or something about them is what defines them, for example, now people think their race, gender, or title is definitive for them when really, it's their character, the sense of entitlement is the test that the dragon poses, thinking "I should be that instead of this." Admittedly though I too have dreamed of being this character, but the words "With great power comes great responsibility" remind me that while it would be wonderful, it's not just swinging around and being called a hero, it's a test of character, and their self importance. While it is good to dream of becoming something more than what you are, it still wouldn't be you, but if you grasp reality and acknowledge the truth, you become a better you, That's Spider-Man
