The Problem With Adventure Movies Today
The new movies are probably my favorite OF ALL TIME. They are so well made and so much thought put into to them. Absolutely incredible films.
The moment she stepped out of the mart with her vault suit adapted with a bit of armor I was like "Oh shit, she just cleared her first dungeon/building". Felt like a game without being super gamey
Language, art (in ALL its mediums), philosophy, scientific endeavor, advancement of technology, morality (NOT tied to animal hierarchy), etc. are all things that separate us from animals. We are unique among animals, it is just fact. The movie is science fiction, not reality. It is art. Nothing can take away from its beauty. But it cannot be replicated by any other species, no matter how hard one would like to bridge the gap between us. If going off evidence based science is considered a presupposition, then his forsaking of it to “open our minds” to more is equally a presupposition, just based on hope.
Film and TV show makers seem to still resent video games, and their players. Failure in doing it well is still far more common than doing it well.
If there is a proper adaptation to film media that accurately portrays the feeling of Grand Strategy or RTS I would lose my mind. In the best way possible.
I like to say that The Last of Us is an incredible series, but not an adaptation. HBO's The Last of Us is a REMAKE of the game with diferent actors. Not only because it's copy pasted cutscenes with gap filling of other stories. But because as source material, there's nothing inherenitly unique to the Video Games media in The Last of Us that stands out from other games of It's genre. The only praise It can get is from It's Story and presentation. As a Video Game, The Last of Us is a mediocre stealth shooter at best. All the things It can be praised upon is for elements borrowed from other medias like cinema and animation.
I always love the "philosophy" of Arda. The way Tolkien created his universe with song and brought the idea of "evil" in with a discord in the melody. Called Melkor who wanted his OWN melody. I knew my heart was lost to Tolkien. Ive learned so much about the resilience of man and the joy of the loyalty and bond of friendship. Truly. Lord of the Rings should be "required" reading in school.
Choosing fallout was a good choice. You need a story where you are the hero, but you’re also the victim. If they did Skyrim, it wouldn’t feel the same as we’re not the ones with the actual power, the actor is. In fallout, we are just as much a victim as the person next to us. We are “the chosen one” but at the same time, we never wanted to be the chosen one. That’s why I love fallout (show and series)
My favorite quote from the show was “Will you still want the same things when you have become a different animal altogether?” Each character wants something, and each character hates what they originally wanted by the end. We think we know the world and once we find out about the real world, we are changed and have different motives for our actions. Another thing I loved was the showing the slow descent the wasteland does to us. Lucy originally had been using non lethal weapons, and adapted her non lethal weapon to become lethal with no intent of actually using it to kill, but at some point she is forced to use a lethal weapon with the sole purpose of killing. This transition is bridged by the fact that what she killed was half human. The feral ghoul was phasing in and out of being feral which makes killing them slightly easier on your conscious. The same thing happens in game; we start by killing some bugs we’re familiar with, and not before long we’re killing people just like us. It takes time, but soon we become what we wanted to eradicate from the wasteland, killers.
Bro sounds like stephen hawking
That last song just broke me. You create such breathtaking works of art by combining so many mediums skillfully. Thank you. Is that last song on Spotify?
10:20 idk what movie that is, i know you said it but my mind blocked it out T_T but i recognized Timothee (timothy?) Charlimane and he's a hell of an actor. First saw him in King and was sold on his performance. Especially before he became king and then again when he did - only to be shown how human a king truly is to be insulted by a ball (insinuated he is a child but it was enough of an insult to go to war with france). The King of France had no idea what his son did and they stopped having war after quite a few losses of soldiers onboth sides, and one of my favorite medieval war characters ever (Hal's best friend who was older and looked after him when he would go "drinkin'n'a'whorin" Such a true friend he was, he even died for that young boy turned man. In the end, Hal (but his king henry the # name) made peace with King of France who, like i said, didn't know why they were even at war, married his daughter off and that ended the conflict. to go insulted by a ball gift on his coronation to getting a beautiful strong bride. sucks he had to go to war to get it... but his growth in that movie from the moment he saved his brother and both sides' armies from a senseless fight by killing only one man (Hotspur) was true love forhis family and somewhat technical subjects as he was royalty. No matter what, that film was amazing. Could have been better in certain parts, but that opening 1v1 of Hal vs Hotspur is what sucked me in and kept me in.
the armour she emerges with is actually a reference to fallout 1
With our current views of success and pleasure, the pursuit of happiness is the pursuit of evil.
9:51 I remember those scenes
anime and indie animation will be the only art medium to prevail

Great Video and agree with almost everything but let's get one thing straight. While Bill's episode in The Last of Us series was great the Video game portrayal and especially interaction between Bill, Ellie and Joel is far greater. The scene where Bill and Ellie meet when he chains her to a pipe could have been one of the most important world building moments for the show. The intensity of that moment was integral to relational skepticism within the world and also show Ellies tenacity and natural ability to survive. Bill in the video game is a much better addition to the overarching narrative this is easy to see if You loom at it from a Birds eye view.
"Greater love has no man than he give his life for another." I am glad Boromir was redeemed.
Boromir was given a chance for redemption and he took it. He redeemed himself and I'm glad.
I like how The Last Of Us makes it feel so much realer, people survive and create BIG settlements, while major cities still exist and zombies act like zombies while still not being over powered. (Plus their explanation of Evolving Mushrooms entering the food supplies; hens zombies and the way the mushrooms enter the blood stream and brain from a bite) They also make the idea of power and vehicles still working is some what new. I feel like in The Last Of Us, it’s obvious zombies aren’t the villain (well they are) but it shows hehe after effects of apocalypses where humans are either the sweetest people or the most horrific evil.
In Conquest it was revealed that there were 2 different endings, the theatrical and the uncut, the theatrical was meant to be more hopeful at the end that a peaceful resolution could be found, while the uncut ending was to solidify that Conquest would lead into the original Planet of the Apes with no sequel in mind. and here's my headcanon as it were The Theatrical Ending leads into Battle for TPOTA and is a split timeline where humanity and apes would live side by side. The Uncut ending leads into the OG timeline and it would do so because it would follow the original planned idea for Battle for TPOTA where Aldo would have killed Ceaser and take over ape society, killing the more intellectual humans and keeping the dumber ones as slaves thus establishing himself as Aldo the lawgiver, rewriting history so that he was the brave ape who stood up to man and lead apes to the society we would see be depicted in POTA
Beautiful work as always, brother. I’ve been watching your videos for the past 6 or so years now. I moved with my family to New Zealand 6 years ago and had a very hard time coping in a new environment and making new friends with people whose culture I knew nothing about. It was during that time that I used to binge watch your video essays a lot during the times I spent my break times alone and even when I was at home in hopes to find answers for my own questions in life. Safe to say, your videos have answered so many of them during that time and still do to this day. I pray that you be blessed with nothing but the good in your life and for God to bless you the same way he blessed me during that lonesome time of my life through your videos.
Within this idea, I feel like I’ve been chasing for a reconnection to the very specific quailia of playing Jak and Daxter. I was like 8 when the games started coming out and the evolution of Jak moving on from the safety and communal beauty of the Green Sage’s village introduced a language to the stressful emotions inherently experienced in my getting older. I’m not sure that’s something that can be replicated singularly through a show and so I remind myself to cherish the fact that I had such a source of support during my transition from child to adolescent.
Skyrim is so damn comfy. There is nothing like it when it comes to simulating life in a fantasy universe.
What’s ironic is I just attempted to watch this movie and my maladaptive daydreaming kept me from doing so 😶🌫️ I feel like it’s become worse with age 😣
The Last of Us TV show really didnt adapt the gameplay at all and suffered for it
Regrets are made of insincerity.
Reality is nothing but an illusion that everyone else expects you to engage with, for their gratification.
I think they/you have it backwards. People coming together in a disaster could well be an instinct, triggered by the sudden collapse of securities -- that is to say, it isn't something to be proud of; these people want their securities back and they know damned well they need to pull together in order to maximize the chance of regaining it. Don't judge people by their behaviour in a crisis; judge them by their behaviour when they feel secure.. That's when people's true character (or, more precisely, their total lack there of) comes out. Calling their insecurity response to a crisis their true character is absolute BS.
Great movie 🎥
There is not justice any more, if there ever was. I love these characters, their motivations, and especially their vengeance. Watching it satisfies the demon within, if only for a moment; better than letting it loose. In the short term, anyway. You're right about it being "deep seated" from an "injustice done to us". Perhaps if this world, our society and the human race wasn't such a piece of shit, those of us who feel this way wouldn't have to.
Super cathartic to finally find your breakdown of this series. When the show came out it felt like the discourse was super divisive and I feel like I never really heard a perspective like this that echoed how I experienced it: some decent things but also some "out of tune" notes that kept it from landing how it seemed to want to.
Edge of Tomorrow is based on a light novel called All You Need is Kill. Many light novels have a heavy videogame influence.
Fantastic video as always!
23:28 Best shot of the century
Timestamp where he gets to the point?

I wonder how much of this transformation is due to the fact that our apocalypse stories used to be about apprehension towards things which we expected to end society (nuclear, AI, pandemics) but now we’ve survived/are surviving all of them and are a bit more optimistic now
Its 2024 and im still watching this video over and over for the past 5 years.
Do you think Cooper is detached? Or maybe in truth super connected to himself and his needs and boundaries? Like approaching this world in a meditative state where can watch himself feel what he needs to feel and regulate accordingly?
Revolutionary Optimism ♥️💯🔥
It also helps that chimps are so cute
It was a Mass Extinction Event by evolution rather than an act of God like solar flares or big rocks flying through space. But I guess evolution would be an act of God too.
Hearing your perspective on the gameplay, makes me wanna pick up New Vegas again, in ways the Fallout show just doesn't. I do like the show, too, and for many of the reasons you express.
