GREATSWORD BATTLE

- A greatsword melee duel between Arlon (black) with his grand falchion and me (red) with my executioner sword. I think I was done before this one started, but that's no credit leaving him - he usually beat me almost every single time.
The sport is called buhurt, or armored combat, where we fight as knights did during medieval tournaments in armor. This is different from HEMA and fencing, there's a different art to it. Not the same as a battle like, lets say England vs France in the medieval times, but like a tournament held instead in medieval times where people still wanted to go home afterwards.

Thats more in longsword territory. Greatswords are literally man-sized.
That’s accurate. I hate to say it’s just more of a tag for a generalization of what people think to why I did it. These are somewhere in between, both nearly 5ft if I recall correctly.
If you look even closer you can see one is a messer while the other is an executioners sword
@@taildecker9364 ah yes that is true. Left is Messer and right with the rounded tip is the executioner's.
It’s technically a Russian style grand falchion, very close to a messer
No, no it isn’t, look at any historical source, those are far too chunky, far too heavy, far too long. They aren’t even in the spadone range, they are greatswords. The problem is that bohurt doesn’t care, it’s unhistorical, neither of these swords would ever see combat, especially for anything armored

@@GrantTheKnighthaha you did well. Keep up the posting !
Well, you've got moments like 0:40 where red hit black in the head. In the movies that would be a kill shot. But in this case it didn't even slow black down. So, is it because these weapons are dull? Or did medieval knights just not bother bashing each other in armor (since it seems to be nearly irrelevant compared to the wrestling)?
@@cra2cra226plate armour, combined with a large amount of padding, is enough to make most weapons really ineffective. You generally wouldn't even want to kill a knight, since capturing one alive could give you a LOT of ransom money, but if you had to, you'd do so by wrestling him to the ground and stabbing the gaps with a dagger. Full plate was prohibitively expensive for everyone but the very richest though, so encounters like these would be uncommon
@@cra2cra226the blades are extremely dull and this is 2023 so yeah.

I can’t wait to do this in some castle, ruins or not.
Judo throws in knight fights might be my new favorite thing
I'm amazed that judges don't wear helmets.
It’s a risk but they have to move, breath, and see and they’re out there the entire time. Those helmets get exhausting quick.

Knight in the blacks follow up swing is just gold.
But now imagine. Hundreds of peopling screaming, men from all directions. The uncertainty of each battle weighing on your mind. That was the life on the battlefield
this is close to a tournament fight than a battle field, cuz no knight would kill another knight with a sword in the battlefield
Oh I understand, knights typically wouldn't try to kill one another, but capture them and be held for ransom. But when they did, and they did kill each other, it consistently stabbings to the face and wounds that evaded the armor.
It's hard to believe that not long ago, battles were won this way.
Not all that hard actually. Honestly wish we still fought like this. Anyone can push a button to drop a bomb, it takes nerves of steel to stab someone in the chest through plated armour

Knights wouldn't be doing that mate, not often, they'd be riding down peasants or other lightly/unarmored enemy infantry or archers whilst their own archers did the bulk of the work. Platemail basically made you a tank, and it was very difficult to deal with for any enemy who was not able to afford the correct weaponry or sufficient armor. Honestly, you could be completely mediocre but in plate and fight the best swordsman in the world who had no armor, and you'd probably win. Why? Because it's really fucking hard for them to actually hurt you seriously meaning, but it will only take a single decent strike to put them down, you can just intentionally bait hits and respond among other tactics.
We automated warfare, as we did with everything, but actual live combat isn't something to idolize mate, it's a disgusting practice that only causes suffering to everyone involved. The enemy dies or is crippled and your own soldiers are permanently scarred. Why would you ever want to fight up close when you can minimize risk anyway? That's literally the same methodology behind plate, keeping the user as safe as possible and minimizing risks.

That dude with the messer is a real unit! And he has some damn good riposte skills, too - he landed quite a few really nice deflections that trasitioned into solid blows!

The masculine urge to attack another with a great sword
Hahaha😂 I'm sure they knew more about sword fighting back then than we do now..
also they trained since the age of 7
So Im fully aware that using swords is mostly for the sport and dont do much against the plate, but Im wondering, with swords this size or even bigger, how much blunt force do you feel when getting hit over the head and do you think you could get knocked out if unlucky enough? Awesome swords btw, both the executioner style pointless chopper, as well as the mean looking super-gross messer.
Yeah most swords you wouldn’t feel but these do well for blunt force. Mine hits harder than my axe does and I’ve made plenty of dents on others - same for him I have dents on my armor to prove it. When it hits, it hurts, and when it gets in between the armor, it hurts like hell.
the real pain is in the ears when your bucket get thwacked
No joke, when it hits right it’s like a gong or a bell 😂
I understand all that gear is cumbersome, but I didn't see any swings hard enough to do any significant damage. (Especially from the bigger guy) Even if thwacked right in the head, I don't think those swords have enough weight to cause concussive damage. Maybe disorient someone, but not knock them out.

The kriegsmesser my favorite sword!!!
I am fairly sure that's a two handed falchion; but it's difficult to tell because often the only real difference between the two is the handle. This one seems to have a round leather grip with an actual pommel, a proper sword's handle; whereas a messer would have a wooden knife-like handle with a simple metal cap as a pommel. As for the blade, there is a considerable overlap between falchion blades and messer blades, so it's not so easy to tell the difference at first glance.
Curved blades look so beautiful. Also these swords are built really well. Thank you for the upload.

Good fight, the takedown at the end was the cherry on top 😎🤙
I love the chivalry that comes from the comfort of full armor.
Also, the dude with the scimmy is a technical mastermind. He's disarmed and knocked the big dude off balance.
You obviously don't know the definition of chivalry.
It urks me when people try to use vocabulary to sound smart, but use it completely wrong. Just say what you mean, don't go outside your 6th grade reading level to _try_ to impress people on the internet. It's second hand embarrassing.
My Norse-Gaelic ancestors are screaming at me to get involved 😂💀
Бросок, отличен!!! ❤
Nothing better than watching people don some heavy armor and fight each other like the olden days 😊
Something I’ve been curious about is the armour you wear. It looks so much bulkier than the museum pieces I’ve seen and the recreations some other armoured fencers wear. Is that just because you guys are bulkier than them or is the aim here less to create exactly historically accurate recreations and more to ensure the wearer’s safety at all costs?
Both bulkier and safety. Major rule is to be safe!
Our stuffs a little bulkier than some museum pieces and close to others. Often it’s 10-2.0 lbs heavier but we want to go home since the weapons are solid steel too (and that’s what differentiates us from others like HEMA is ours are solid thick steel).
The cattle fence used for the ring really shows off how these 2 are actually animals.
humans are animals, congratulations.
Dude used his own sword as leverage. That was dope as hell!
Imagine how violent and brutal this would have been if they were actually trying to kill each?

That reversal was near flawless. Used the bigger guy’s momentum to bring him to the floor.

This is honestly way better than watching UFC lol.
The title was right, this was a great sword battle.
I’ve noticed watching a lot of your videos that you tend to guard a little high. It works out for you most of the time bc you are noticeably physically stronger a lot of other guys and you can overhead through their guard and take a commanding control of the fight. But guys like this one who are a little closer to your strength but are really good at parrying will be able to get in really close on you a lot and destabilize your swing/sword and do some damage while you recover your position. Good show man!
LOL! The people in the background was the best part of the show. 😂
