I actually wrote a 4- page essay on this last year. Poor, starving people in a horrible industry trying to make half a living for their families, dragged into the killing of millions of the beauitful beasts of the sea. So sad. The demand for shark products needs to goa away asap. This is destroying ecosystems as well as human lives.đ

Thank you thank you thank you for bringing this up! People are often forced into these positions because of poverty. If their choices are fish for sharks and feed their family, or stop fishing and starve, there is only one option for them. It's important to save the sharks, but also to take care of the people who depend on the sharks.

- Yes, I'm aware that thousands of poorer families profit off of hunting sharks as their only source of income, but without sharks there is no ocean. It has been proven that sharks are an absolutely vital part of oceanic ecosystems, and as the shark populations decrease so does the welfare of the sea. There are other solutions to poverty, and by raising awareness, all of us can help!
- The solution is not to "kill off the fishermen". Most fishermen are doing their best to help the environment in the ways they can, and instead of being negative towards them, we should be trying to make the world a more supportive place for the people who must do what they must.
- Sharks are beautiful, graceful creatures, and it is untrue that they kill more of us than we do of them. We kill billions of sharks every year. Sharks may only kill less than a hundred people every two years. But the argument here should not be "are humans or sharks worse?" the discussion should be "what can we do to create a better solution for both species?"

They need constant motion because they do not have like the swim bladders like normal fish. Constant motion also ensures enough oxygen reaches their gills by having fresh water flow through the gills all the time. They do not do well in captivitu due to the limited space, hence they cannot also reproduce there. Not unless these shark finning industries will be heavily regulated (and they have to stamp out illegal fishers too), we have no chance to save them. They did it with whales, but as soon as the numbers went up, whaling regularions have become lax so... Very little hope. I feel sad. Humans consume at a rate that Mother Nature cannot keep up with producing.

My biology teachers told me once that humans were the only "animals" that could be removed from the planet and it wouldn't effect the ecosystems negatively.
