- Anything related to mitochondrial dysfunction can lead to chronic metabolic disease. There are many substrates that contribute to sickness, but it’s sugar that is cheap, addictive, and ubiquitous. Dr. Robert Lustig’s goal is to educate people about the harmful effects of sugar so that sugar consumption becomes less socially acceptable.

I never take my sugar adiction seriously but after you shared that im serous now.
Thank you dear doctor
Exactly why I tossed out everything in my pantry made with sugar and EVERYTHING that can turn into sugar- (rice, pasta, cereal, flour for baking, bread and bread machine) all gone. In one month I have dropped 10 pounds and I am not hungry at all, NO cravings. It was the damn sugar sabotaging me all the time and the NO Fat Milk was a back stabber too. Big on meats and very limited on fruit (sugar) and selective veg's. It works.
❤❤❤❤
Healthy people eat lots of unrefined carbs.
The main staple for good health.
Big profit in being sick.
I might sound sarcastic but, “Gluttony is a demon that rides on a horse named SUGAR” 😩 ugh!!! Thank you dear Doctor Lustig for sharing the truth! ❤ many people love you 🥰 for your lifelong dedication and work!
Maybe it's more simple, like they didn't understand their tummys & over stuffed them, before they knew it , oh my gosh, were fat ! 💝🚴♀️
Thank you, Dr. Lustig.
Dr. Lustig is looking a lot better than he used to look on videos from years ago. Good for him!
When my father had diabetes everyone in the household changed their diets to what his nutritionist said to do. We soon found out real foods are Way more flavorful when they’re not processed & full of additives! And they give us energy. Excellent video thank you!! 🥬🥦🌶🧄 🧅 🍓🫐🍋🍎🥑 🏃♀️😊
Sounds like your dad had a better-than-average nutritionist and a very supportive family!
Off sugar for a year now. Thanks doc. Bless your heart
Convert those corn fields to grazing land for cattle.
Absolutely the optimal plan!
When I tell my friends information about sugar & fuctose I tell them I'm Dr. Lustig's pupil. I watch EVERYTHING I find in youtube.
As a person with mental health issues and thus on medication for it, the No.1 side effect of antidepressants is cravings for carbohydrates, particularly sweet stuff because it helps release dopamine in to the system, therefore you feel happy.
A patient cured....is a customer lost.
A patient cured....is a customer lost. And DOCTOR Lustig has been in the low-carb business for decades; making a living from it. So he's not losing many customers.
“Sugar is not love.” I couldn’t agree more with this statement by Dr. Robert Lustig. Unfortunately, society still associate sugar with love. Words and phrases like “Honey”, “Sweetheart”, “Sweetie” and “So Sweet” are obvious examples. Another example is people give chocolate confectioneries to their loved ones on Valentine’s Day. This is how brainwashed and manipulated the sheeple have become courtesy of the major food conglomerates and Hollywood. People who give confectioneries to their loved ones on V-Day are literally poisoning their “Sweethearts” to death by sl0w k1ll.
❤❤❤
Except for 70% dark cacao (REAL dark chocolate without sugar!) 😮
Sugar should be a condiment. No, drop all sugar forever.
If you struggle to quit sugar, i really advice you to read Jessie's Inchauspé book: easy to follow, no restriction of social life, no extremes.
If you are still tired after quitting sugar, which can lessen your motivation to follow your good diet, maybe have a look to COQ10+NADH, and/or NMN to get some energy, but don't use on a long run, as we don't know the long term effects yet. You might probably have a mitochondrial dysfunction because of your bad diets habits, or because of childhood trauma, and this dysfunction could last a while or forever, so this fatigue (post meal often, even after a very small meal; and brain fog too) must be adressed with supplements like NMN or NADH: it helps a lot.
Been trying to keep my intake of sugar under 25 grams per day, but sugar is almost everywhere! Any food item with more than one ingredient requires scrutiny. Loved Metabolical!
Hmm, we been eating sugar for around 2000 years and in the last 20 it's become bad for us, I think I'll side with nature on this one and keep to using the natural sugars.
we eat sugar ever since, and found out it becomes toxic once we isolate it.
I never had a sweet tooth but when I discovered just how much sugar is in everything (fruits & veggies too), I've been carnivore every since! I hope this clip goes viral. Oh! Cancer THRIVES on sugar!
❤❤❤❤
perfect point of view.
Thank you.
Money, power and greed always wins over healthy nutrition and many other good things on this planet. Maybe they always will. 🙏❤️
I believe that alcohol does stimulate an insulin reaction, the liver is the detoxifier. Pancreatitis and hepatitis can be co occurring conditions. Many alcoholics are brittle diabetics as are many carb bingers!
You can't educate some people, and it's silly to suggest otherwise.
Cutting corn and sugar subsidies for all large corporate farms is important, as are **swingeing** (sic) taxes on sugar and corn product imports. The corporate farms will "howl with anguish" at the cuts and cite potention mass unemployment. (They used to say this about tobacco). If you want to ruin an economy or society, give subsidies to support dying or unethical industries (or give subsidies to buy votes in marginal electoral districts).
Subsidies should never be given, unless the very survival of the country is threatened.
Subsidies are wealth transfers and are immoral.
Something most people don't seem to know is to read the ingredients list on your box of salt or table salt.
Many brands of salt add cheap fillers: sugar, silica (basically sand), cellulose (basically sawdust), and more.
I've helped several diabetics who experienced issues caused by eating "salt" laced with sugar on / in foods. Once they switched to 100% salt (and not sea salt, either), they were fine.
Side note: many types of cheese that are cheese (not "cheese product") also have added cellulose, silica, and even sugar. Think powdered cheeses, pre-packaged cheese slices, and stringy cheeses.
Excellent
well said
Interesting stuff. I don't think it's much of a secret anymore that sugar, alcohol, and trans fats can be/are problematic. However, I have to claim ignorance on the amino acids. I was always led to believe more is better. Now I'm curious about threshholds for aminos acids. I used to use protein powders chock full of amino acids pretty heavily back when I was vegan and trying to meet my protein requirements.
How much protein a day is enought?
I'm still unclear with protein if we should be eating as much as we can get away with our as little as we can get away with. I think more is better, up to a point.
RDA for an adult male is 55g/day last time I looked. But this should be seen as a minimum. I do better in just over 100g/day.

The problem if not the cancer in our culture is short term gratification, everybody wants the high without the low and they want it on tap to access at all times.
Sugar abig problem . Govermants must put high tax on the msnufacturer and i incresse its price . Education of the families and make it subject early in school to teach children about its bad effect. They should provide the alternative and make it vheaper and available.
Dear Robert, please give me more to read in which way sugar inhibits the ATP production (Studies, some texts of you). I'm not aware of it and I haven't read it anywhere.
many thanks the diabetic foundations also love sugar in the supermarket..it provides business potential down the track, and a lot of docs dont care as they are sick of seeing sick people with there sickness and this creates apathy ,as they docs have to work harder..because they havent and wont address the sugar problem..i thank you for your honesty..

The American Diabetes Association takes a lot of sponsor money from Coca-Cola, General Mills, and other sugar makers. They also get a lot of money from the diabetes-accessory industry.
@@JM-ot8ux -thx for that comment..so if they are lying about diabetics ..and deliberately taking money from the sugar corps,,it means a criminal act..they should be evicted ,outs from the fda U.S. Food and Drug Administration..now people can see why the fda is one body...a crim organisation..what else is a LIE ?
Well that just ruined my second snack.....
Meat is heavily subsidized too.
We actually need to eat meat.
He is not wrong but he only can see the half of the picture. When retinol is stored in fat tissues sugar is mostly converted to fat and metabolism is blocked.
But it was normal during autumn and winter in paleo age.
Any insights on Stevia or Xylitol?
Good in small amounts!
my parner keeps buying all these 0% fat yogurts that taste, literally, of ASS! and i am 10 years older and so much fitter. She can't keep up with me in many departments ;-) and yet, can i get her to listen to me? no chance 😞
I empathize. Can be like banging your head on the wall!
What about people afflicted with McArdle's disease?
I do well on sugar but i train like crazy
That’s what Mark Sisson until he got autoimmune problems, pain, and IBS. That’s what Tim Noakes said until he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Check your fasting insulin.
So what about fruits that have sugar, please explain
Fruits also have fiber. Fruit-juice drinks don't.
I wish he talked about how much protein is enough? I thought we needed lots of protein to repair muscle damage ?
He talked about the mechanism in a different video, although he didn't give numbers. The situation is that, when the liver converts proteins into glucose, the liver must actually use more energy to do the conversion than it gets within the final product. This means that, for a non-obese, non-diabetes-2 individual (particularly one engaging in regular, muscle-challenging/muscle-building exercise), the extra protein-conversion actually decreases liver fat in that process. However, for someone already sated with carbs (long-string sugar), that extra glucose can go into storage within the liver, causing the disease. This is why a keto/carnivore diet rarely ever results in fatty liver conditions. This is a second way that sugar is trying to kill you.
Hi Dr. ; just wondering what you think of governor Newson's plan to manufacture and sell cheap insulin to Californians?
I am confused: doesn't sugar generate insulin rise?
glucose in sugar does, fructose doesn't.
Fructose doez
But dead animal protein is okay. Right
Yes. Dead animal protein is okay. Humans eat meat. Deal with it. Also, deal with your inevitable nutritional deficits and brain damage from eating an idiot's vegan diet.
With all due respect but I am fine doing carbs. After doing Keto for six years (as suggested by doctor Berg, Smitd & Berry's videos) my blood pressure was high high and my diabetes 2 out of control. I avoided the saturated fats and everything came back to normal.... Lesson: these doctors mean good but one diet doesn't fit everyone. Listen to your body and learn to read your lab results. Take Internet advice with a grain of salt. If it works for you you're good to go. If it doesn't stop insisting, leave it alone. Simple! Good luck everyone!
If the price of corn goes up, the price of meat and dairy will go up as well as chickens, cows and pork eat corn. Many drinks use corn as a sweetener too, it's everywhere, even in hand creams and toothpaste! It is used to make ethanol gas, batteries, deodorants, diapers, baby powders, plastics, crayons, whiskey, glue, and cough drops and medications. So it is not that simple just to cut the subsidies to corn and problem solved.

Just like weather. 15° C? So what? Is it sunny or cloudy? Day or night? Windy or foggy?
We're not what we eat. We're what our gut microbiom do with what we eat. If our gut microbiom is screwed up by antibiotics chemics artificial sweeteners, we're in trouble.
If I had a company that made trillions of dollars from sickness, I would encourage the production of foods that cause illness and I would encourage the release of drugs that had side effects that needed more medication.
We don't need sweet poison.
I thought sugar causes a spike in insulin?
Sugar is bad. Starch is good. The winners of most marathons the Kenyans eat 80% starch. The longest lived the Okinawans ate 80% starch.

Money is the driving factor that keeps ppl sick. Physicians , many of them, havent been educated in this. I'm a RN who worked in this field for 50+ years. Can't tell you how many doc's I've gotten into arguments with over this.
This is an interesting talk but if my son eats a banana it will put his sugar up. He's diabetic. Presumably you are saying it's the carbs or something else putting up the blood sugar, otherwise I'm confused.
A banana has lots of carbs and lots of sugar. Of course if your son eats it his blood sugar will rise. Are you really unaware that a banana has carbs and sugar?
@@JM-ot8ux Hi JM, I was referring to that part of Robert's lecture at 00:51 where he says "what do these substrates have in common (one being sugar aka banana) there's no insulin rise they don't generate and insulin response". Sorry if I did not make this clear.
@@markus55881 Fructose doesn't cause insulin rise, but that doesn't make it safe. It has to be processed in the liver, which stresses that organ.
@@JM-ot8ux Hi thanks JM, I can see I missed the obvious. I do think that indirectly fructose causes blood sugar to rise and I don't think it takes too long (based on my diabetic son). Officially though you are right, fructose doesn't raise blood sugar, although it will do eventually once it gets converted into glucose (I think I'm right on this point) - cheers
@@markus55881 Fructose doesn't convert to glucose. If the liver is loaded with fructose to convert either to glycogen or fat, then it can't process glucose either.
Just run more :-), or Bike or Swim or walk.
Obviously you didn't watch the video.
i ride a bicycle fast pedaling for 15 minutes a day i get good little workout from that better than brisk walking.
Absolutely nothing wrong with fruit, fruit won’t cause diabetes.
Are you an endocrinologist? Didn't think so.
@@JM-ot8ux
You don't need to be an endocrinologist to see that fruit won’t cause diabetes. No fruitarians get diabetes... only people who eat sugar AND plenty of fat
In science, a hypothesis is not a proof. People are living 30 years longer now than they were in 1900. And you declare "everyone's" getting sick ? Is that surprising? Cutting back on sugar seems a good idea, and the food industry supplies low-sugar substitutes for those who want to lose weight or eat healthy . Making a profit keeps them in business and keeps people fed.
Bless your heart.
Stay away from crap food. Processed rubbish. Sugar.
