- BASS NOW SPECIAL: "How to develop a groove?" Marcus Miller talks with Michael League (leader of the cool collective named Snarky Puppy) about some interessting stuff. Moderator Ashley Kahn got no chance. Marcus is the boss here, running the show in all aspects.
INFO: THERE ARE TWO MORE VIDEOS FROM THIS MEETING on my YT-CHANNEL: tonartification
0:58 - Commit to the bass line and 1:41 - basically saying don't do a fill if you can't get back to the beat safely. These are two very good points from Marcus and rules that I'm so guilty of breaking all the time!
Words from the master must be heeded!
scubapig commit to the bass line.
@@mrdjr6544 Oh yeah, technically you're right. Groove kind of implies that, but yeah. I'll correct it.
scubapig Don’t remember typing this I was drunk.
@@mrdjr6544 😀
Commit... but also know when he did change it... right before redundancy... yes, he could've kept going, but around 16 bars, if nothing else is going on, doesnt have to be much more than a tap, could be more space...
I love how Michael naturally did a fill on 1 even though Marcus (lightly) called him out on it. But we all know that that's totally a Michael League-ism and it's SOOOOO good! Later on Marcus wanted him to do it again. Everything about this is so awesome. I'm learning a lot from it.
Yeah man I hear you, that timing is so sick!
It totally is a League thing, man. I love fills on 1 too because I think it adds a whole new layer to the bars as opposed to something being expected on 4.
Marcus Miller is a national treasure.
Marcus Miller is a world treasure
Great contrast between two styles of players that play two different types of strings. Michael is primarily a fingerstyle player playing flatwounds and Marcus is primarily a slap player playing roundwounds. Love and appreciate both!
Marcus was a sideman from the late 70s to the early 90s appearing on over 500 albums ...hes a extremely well balanced bass player...yes his preference is slap but he plays whatever the situation requires ..his finger style is just as distinctive as his slapping
I am not a Bass Player but Marcus made great sense in getting the most sounds out of the one Bass you have.
Michael League is sooo humble and passionate for músic. Man he is true example of person. Both of them aré into Brazilian músic. It would be a dream tô make a sound with them
Marcus Miller always talk important things for musicians!!! Very nice the talk about the commitment of what you are doing!! Master!
0:52 "Now i dont have idea how you do it" ... Marcus has so much groove that only saying those words you can feel it
Commit to a groove. Commit to a sound. Commit to an instrument.
There's wisdom right there! ❤️👏
Two of my fav's at the moment
Miller is humble guy. Took it easy on that guy. He could have really smoked like Richard Bona and left the other guy wondering what day it was
5:55 "Check out the difference in sounds. Michael's playing a..."
*Wtf kinda bass is that look of confusion*
An absolute masterclass. I would have done anything to have been able to to see this live.
Inspiring to hear the last bit about commiting to a sound. I often find myself wanting to change my sound because I get inspired by very different styles of music. "I need a new bass because I can't get that sound with the one I already have. I need different strings because I can't get the sound I want with my ultradead flatwounds." Deep down I know where my heart really lies and what sound I consider to be my own, and I'm starting to realize that I need to commit to it.

pure gold right here M L and MM fiyaaa in the house
Awesome moment here.. wish I was there to hear it live..
Love both of these bassist!
Mikes reaction at 6:18 is priceless
Marcus is simply the best.
more wisdom in a few seconds of talk than in a year of lessons. Marcus Miller, folks.
You are NOT making up stories.
6:15 literally makes me fall out of my seat everytime
Grazie della pubblicazione che mette in evidenza la grandezza di Marcus
I only just discovered "Snarky Puppy" two weeks ago, [no shit] & was reveling at how they sounded like the music I used to listen to and had no trouble finding ... in the 70s that is.
Mr. Miller is as funky as usual and very generous. His guidance and advice are so on point. This video was like going to school. thank you.
btw: I can't believe people are TALKING during this in the audience, they should all go home and stand in the corner for an hour & think about their awful behavior... learn some respect& if this sort of performance is not your thing, don't go, leave the seat for people who care.
... yes, indeed the noisy talking coming from audience is pretty loud. The truth is that the stage was outdoor with a bar located nearby. The second truth is that especially dutch people are loud in public anyway ...
People dont care about music, most of the time
Two legends! Loving it
Awesome, thanks for posting.
Bass royalty right there.
Oh God, I want more of this!
... yep, there are 2 more vids from this Miller/League show on my YT channel: tonartification
This is so enlightening...and what a killer groove.
What Marcus Miller says from 7:00 on regarding 'commiting to one instrument' ist the ABSOLUTE, PLAIN TRUTH! Even with some great players, whenever they change guitars often I always feel that it sounds worse than what their main instrument does. Of course, 'speciality' guitars like 12-strings, baritones, etc have their place but I see those as tools.
Think of it: Hendrix, SRV, Gilmour had their Strats. Some guys like Clapton and Beck changed their weapon of choice over the years but they would commit then and stay with Strats fro a long time.
That's even true of studio players, like Larry Carlton and his ES-335, James Burton and more recently Brent Mason with their Telecasters. Those guys covered a wide variety of music.
Great video BTW, both guys are absolute badass musicians.
Greats with thier greatest examples really helps a lot
Commitment - to the groove, your sound, your instrument, in anything you do. (Y)
I love Michael's little cutting board for his pedals :-)
I like Marcus's statement about commitment to one instrument. Im always seeing bassist online with 20 diffrent basses but to tell the truth there is very little diffrence in the sound from one bass to another generally. Commitment to one instrument can force a player to get all the sounds he or she wants with just practice. Marcus gets plenty of sounds from his jazz bass and he usually only has maybe 2 or 3 basses at his concerts but sticks primarily to one instrument. So does Jeff Berlin and Jaco and Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten.
You're right but I think it's not in the interest of the industry. They want to sell only ...
Michael just ordered a MM Fender Jazz Bass. That was the turning point ! Lol
I´m so glad we have Marcus while Miles and Eddie WHO? and Zawinul amongst so many others are gone! He´s keeping up the legacyof groove and commitment up (alongside Herbie).
AAAnd on the topic of committing to 1 instrument --> Linley Marthe!!!
Wow, it’s not rocket science! James Brown said keep it on the one! Love the late inflections err now and again! That keeps it real mane!!!!
3:16
Where's m'gurl Esperanza? She funky on E. Bass, too.
Mike!!! ❤️❤️❤️🎼🎶🍻
Lovely playing and attitude : - )
Awesome!!!!
Was theeeeeereeee :D
u know when someone is good at the bass when you do what mike did at 3:25
Michael’s timing was actually better here in all honesty, love his groove too!
kind of hard to be off when playing with a machine like Marcus. No that from experience. Marcus has been that machine since the 80's Miles & Luther Vandross days. Just ridiculously solid. So easy to play with.
@@jasonthomas6486 You're not THE Jason "JT" Thomas are you?
Max _
Yes he is. JT is both a drum and a CZcams comment virtuoso!
@@simonchidgey3215 LOL!!!
@@max_435 Lower case "the" rather than All Caps... LOL... but yes, this is JT. Hi how are ya?!
Now that's great!!
Father & son !
If i could play bass id be brilliant
commit to it and do the same thing but better..... that's amazing advice for someone who makes house music
muito bom...
It is okay to be intimidated by him....I mean, He is freaking Marcus Miller yo!
pledge allegiance to the funk, you can't go wrong
two cool cats !
I looked for a gal that looked like Gweneth Paltrow and played bass like Marcus Miller-no luck so far.
I get what Marcus is sayin, but for guitar, having a Les Paul and a Strat ain't such a bad idea.
MM at it again.
ALSO,the man was droppin' Game, and U cut him OFF!!
... I know, but sadly the memory space was full at that moment. In the meantime I switched on the external card to film the second part ;)
sKoOL'm MarK !
Where is the "affordable" bass SIRE? Is anyone know? .... And No SIR ....e
Does anyone know what is the bass Michael is playing in this video. Definitely not the fender??
Bacci
That was NICE !!!! What bass is Michael playing ? Anybody know ?
He's got a Signature Amp by MarkBass since couple of Weeks.
That's some awkward kind of choice for chairs when inviting bass players
Can the dislike explain why?
Haters gonna hate
People talking in the background?
People talking in the background definitely.
Maybe bc they’re at a bass guitar forum and all the chairs have arm rests ...
They own 30 basses
Who coordinated this show? Hey, there's gonna be 2 bass players performing so let's use rolling, swiveling chairs with arms so that both of them can be as uncomfortable and have to sit as awkwardly as possible for an extended period of time.
the master and the rest ….
This video should be tittled... Michael meets Marcus.....
M&Ms
I have been playing the bass guitar for over 30 years in almost all forms and styles that there are and I would be TERRIFIED to sit down with either one of these POWERHOUSES to jam.
.
.
But if I did, I BET YOU GOOD MONEY that I would take away things from it that would make me a better bassist for the reat if my life.
Dream.
What the hell is that @ 5:20, a manatee in the audience? WTH
I dondt agree with markus miller too focus on only one instrument one guitar one bass in my opinión a diferent instrument o new instrument gives you a new view of things and can help you in creativ the process
This is hard to listen to on a smartphone....just metallic high pitch rambling... Michael sounds ok....but Markus...not his fault. I wish people would use headphones, to enjoy this..because most non musicians will skip this within seconds...
massivebeatzz normal people w wouldn't really stumble across this
Jordan Johnson haha, good point.
School
"The "INHERITOR"??LOL!! No Disrespect, but, DAMN!! How INSULTING!!
This guy is not in Millers league
Quel ennui ! 😶
it's quite funny if you think about it. two legends meet and the result is so .... boring and uninspiring.
boring & uninspiring if you don't get "it"! What were you expecting, especially knowing their backgrounds musically? They talk about what they do, & that's what makes them "Them".
Michael cant slap
So what?......
