Thank you Mitch for letting Marcus speak without interruption.
Thatâs one secret of a good interview!
I couldn't agree more...excellent work all round
I feel he is one of the best Interviewers out there. Check out his interviews with Boost and Cory Wong too!
Mitch did stay out of his way. I did feel a few times like Marcus Miller was sharing some great insights and after a few minutes of explanation, Mitch would say only "right" and not even with a capital R. An example is at 38:36, when after the very interesting, heartfelt definitions of great artist and great producer Mitch's response didn't feel like he heard that answer. I've been watching Mitch for over a decade making these videos so I'm a fan regardless.
THIS!! I came to comment this exact same thing. Such an amazing interview, and only because he just let Marcus go and get all the way through his thought. Especially in the development of Marcusâ tone and playing development. You can edit after if things get long winded. I wasnât subbed before, but I am now.
Marcus was always a special person. Even with a broken leg he came out to perform. Only student who I gave a report card mark of 100!
You're the schoolteacher he mentions in the vid !
@@bryanleigh6497 yes I am. I was and am thrilled with Marcus
Amazing you came and commented. He has inspired so many bass players and other musicians of today, thanks for helping to shape him into the amazing artist he is today.
wow that's awesome you're here commenting :)
Bless you Mr Guarino!
What I got from this interview is Marcus just enjoys making music. No matter what the genre is.
I've been a bassist for nearly 4 decades and always knew of Marcus Miller but never had an intimate experience like this to really get a feel for him as a person as well as a player. What a good dude and solid musician. Thank you Sweetwater for these interviews. So much inspiration here.
The list of this man's credits would shock people. He's low key and humble but he's contributed more to modern music than most people will ever know.
This was one of the best interviews ive seen on the channel.
This is one of the best interviews I've heard from a player of his caliber. Marcus really gave practical information for musicians of all levels. Great job.
yeah now the hard task is finding the musicians who listened xD
Great timeless players of any instrument share a common thread - They give the song what it needs, rather than using it to showcase their playing abilities.
amen.
Been listening to his bass playing since the early eighties, and don't know much about music theory but listening to his interview he truly a master of his craft, he knows his stuff.
I laughed out loud when he started playing with the looper. That was a lifetime of lessons rolled into one. And talk about a great attitude and a complete musician! And I loved his story about his 'Pops'! Any kid learning to play an instrument should watch this every day. MY kid will! Lol
Wow. What an interview. Everything you need to hear in 45 minutes, delivered with such humility and practicality. His enjoyment of playing is what moves you the most. Every note Marcus plays seems to come from deep within!
Right? That is the most enlightening 45 minutes of musical inspiration I've ever taken in.
he describes and lives the creative process in such an organic & intuitive way that even a visual artist like myself understands and finds inspiration.
Miller always says something brilliant in an interview, something that I never thought about.
Back in 1977 in Boston I went to see Tower & Power at the Orpheum Theatre. Lenny White had a quartet as a warm-up band. Really getting more than your moneyâs worth in those times. There was a young bassist playing in Whiteâs band. Hard to take your eyes off him he was already that good. Years later somehow I was drawn back to that night only to learn it was none other than Marcus Miller. Followed him ever since. He never steered you wrong. Even in college weâd go to the town record store in Amherst, Mass, buying the latest fusion-type record and my friends and I would immediately look for his name in the credits. He was early 20âs and ubiquitous in the music scene of the time. Just a remarkable talent.
Marcus is such a gracious guest full of history, knowledge & wisdom.
He handles these generic questions with grace.
Mitch, your the best interviewer.... Mr. Miller... taught a lot in this video.
Marcus Miller. DAYUM.
He was the first cat I looked to in the beginning of the 90âs when I wanted to SERIOUSLY learn bass guitar.
I was aware of him and Stanley Clark and Louis Johnson as the real technique monsters. When he came out with his instructional videos he did for guitar center around that time I just wore those tapes out!
What a legend!
âïžâïžâïžâïž
Saw him at Catalina Jazz Club in LA right before covid shut everything down, night before Kobeâs memorial, Iâve been to 100s of concerts, but Miller and that band that night was so unreal powerful I couldnât believe my ears. Met em all after the show, unreal down to earth cats, wonderful night, God bless Marcus
I love his energy for music and life.
Math you, well said! Loved your commented! Marcus Miller seems to be one of those rare artists--and human beings in general-who has a strong sense of who he is and he inspires others because of that. He's very poised and has, as I perceive anyway, an innate sense of how to relate to others and how to make those around him better at what they do. He interviews others well also--those aforementioned attributes have made him a natural at interacting with others. We need 10 million more just like him! đ Thank you and God bless you and all!
Marcus is the complete musician. One of my all time favourites!! đđŸđŻ
What a humble and amazing human being...
Love how you always see how much Marcus loves to play, give him a beat and he would just noodle on forever!!
Just watching this brother play "jungle boogie" with such attention and respect to that feel, shows what makes him so damn good.....
Less notes means more feel...
What a truly generous sharing of experience
Thank you both
I have loved Marcus Miller since I was first introduced to his music in the 1980s, a fabulous bassist, composer, producer, etc.
The best lesson I ever had, I'm so grateful for this opportunity to listen to Marcus
đđ
Man This Bass King is just an amazing, awesome guy who loves his instrument. FACTS
We lost Jaco but we still have Marcus Miller. Most educational bass video I have ever listened to. Marcus is pouring out the knowledge and the immense experience.đ€đ€đ€. And, playing it all with his namesake Sire!âŠđđđ.
That was the quickest 40 minutes. What an interview!
Absolutely important interview and kudos to Mitch for making it happen. Marcus Miller is my all time favorite MUSICOLOGIST ever since I heard him on the pivotal " Never Too Much " by Luther Vandross and " Star People " by Miles Davis. I have listened extensively to Mr. Miller over the years as evidenced in my collection of the projects that he has been involved in especially such notables as Bernard Wright, Lenny White, The Brecker Brothers, Dave Valentin, George Benson, Grover Washington, Kevin Eubanks, Lonnie Liston Smith, Jamaica Boys, Tom Browne, Bob James, Joe Sample amongst many others. Ultimately and without a doubt, attending a Marcus Miller live performance is the ESSENCE.
I don't understand how people go thumbs down on this stuff.

this is one of the greats - this is history told by the man himself. Kudos to Marcus. Only two players that we can say the first name and we all know who I is - Jaco and Marcus
I am a average Bassist. But I truly love the instrument. My love of music is al the way from the 60 s till present. I always loved listening to Bassist of all genres ( Graham, VWhite-EWF,B Edwards, Boosty, Jerry Jemoalt, Grand Funk, Billy Cox, Grand Funk Railroad, Rare Earth ETC. But Musicianship,Tone,GROOVE esp when he plays behind Other Artist( B James, Joe Sample,D Sanborn ETC) Ive learned so much About Musicianship from this Man. THE CONSUMMATE MUSICIAN!!
Thanks. Great Interview. Enjoyed the genius of Marcus Miller. He's a bit modest too. He played on stage with Myles Davis. I first met him onstage during the soundcheck at an NYC Broadway Theatre Concert. I was invited by guitarist Mike Stern and I remember Marcus being very generous with his time too. I happily enjoyed Myles' famous back as I stood in awe surrounded by such greatness.
I've been playing drums for 42 years and have been playing bass in a band! Love his attitude and love for music! Inspiring!!!!
One of the best interview with a Groove Captain. Ever! This needs to be taught in schools. Thank you!
What kind of Bass do you use to get a good tone
Marcos how do you decide what key to play in or can you use different one , What is your advi e for someone that is green with learning to play the bass?
Mitch, you even took your visual out of the video frame when Marcus was jamming at 24:11, thatâs a classy move. You understand itâs about the interview subject, and thatâs why I dig all of your interviews!
Great questions & Marcus answers with sincerity that is why he is so successful. Abundance of talent, nice guy & no BS.
Missed this live but so awesome to hear Marcus in this way. I have loved him for years. Saw him with Miles years ago at Fairfield Halls, Croyden and since then a couple of times at the Royal Festival Hall. So very talented and so humble. A fine example of humankind. Was going to see him last year at Alexandra Palace but of course it was cancelled. What a guy!!!!!!
Great interview of a great player. I saw Marcus live about 3 years ago and was blown away. Don't miss him if you get the chance. He's a legend, but still at the top of his game.
Man I can listen to this dude play that funky bass all day
I think Marcus Millerâs secret is his humility and mastery of listening and learning from every experience
Marcus is dropping serious knowledge in this presentation. I'm also loving the sound the Sire bass he's playing; it sounds darn near identical to his legendary Roger Sadowsky-modified Fender Jazz Bass. Very cool, thanks for posting.
good eye Richard I didn't notice till I read your comment. His 77 and Signature are both different as well. He did keep the head stock out of sight
@@willieelliott352 I noticed that but after watching, I do not think it was intentional. You could see it was not his Fender.
I also noticed he has it upgraded with a Hipshot bridge it looks like.
@@willieelliott352 I noticed that as well not sure if he was doing that on purpose tho, the sire are great basses!!
Awesome interviewâŠ. Thank you for letting him speak uninhibited đđœ
Thanks Marcus, for breaking down and intelligent look at technique, style, and especially rhythms(oh yeah)! Every bass player should hear this...grateful!!
Marcus is a lovely guy. Very honest and modest.
I have seen and listen to many Marcus interviews over the years. This is the best one in my opinion. You pulled the best out and just let Marcus open up and not only give us a history ; but also educate. Thank you ;thank you;thank you!!
He is always articulate and so worth a listen
You know this is my favorite bass player not just because of how he plays but just listening to him talk you can see the joy in him when he's playing his bass you can tell he truly loves to play the bass đđ
yes sir he is one of the greatest I love the way that he explains what a bass players job is his excellent great teacher and a mentor
This guy is fascinating to listen to about a subject he knows inside and out. Great interview on both sides.
Iâm obsessed with this guy at the moment canât get enough of his playing
Absolutely amazing! After decades of work and endless tours and sessions, there is still the pure joy you see and hear when Marcus plays.
Everytime I watch MM - I get inspired as a bass player, as a mixer...everything's an event....
This is one of the Greatest artist that I have in my collection!
I have been listening to Marcus for 50+ years, and didnât realize it for the first 10 years.
The more I learn about the artist that he influenced, and was influenced by.
I realize that he has influenced me for most of my life...
And I so look forward to his next release. Of whatever, and with whoever.
Thank You Marcus!!!
Always liked Marcus, but after this interview, I love him. What skill and humility!
Probably the best interview Iâve heard by Marcus. So wise, articulate and insightful. Wonderful job with this.
Who in their right mind would give a thumbs down to this video? Mr. Miller is a modern master!
Yes !
This brother has a lot of versatility. Because, of his experiences. And, what i enjoy about his advice to musicians -
In my words !
Every musician may have
A Super Gift to offer rather it be vocals, instruments. Or,
just being good
as A Self Song Writer.
- Or, Helping others.
My foot note :
Watching this video it seems like Marcus Miller is a person who don't hide his knowledge to help others or even when he's learning from musicians whom he seeks. " Beautiful Brother ".
my all time fav bassplayer.grew up with Marcus. first heard him true a friend who had GRP All stars album... ill never forget !!
Marcus you are the joy for billions who grew up with your music I'm from the 60s so Bravo brother.
Youâre such a great interviewer because you let Marcus speak and play and man does he play. He is at the service of the song!
MARCUS IS A REALLY COOL AND GREAT BASS PLAYER âŒïž. EVERYTHING HE JUST SAID IS SO SO SO TRUE âŒïž HE HAS WHAT IS CALLED ( THE GROOVE )
Interviews where the instrument does half the talking are the BEST!
I have been playing playing guitar, piano, keyboards and bass guitar since early childhood. Marcus Miller is first a musician, meaning he knows how and what to play to blend in with what the others at that particular time he's playing with are doing until they can work it out later. Marcus is one of the
Most Talented Musician, song writer and performers that we have had the pleasure to see and listen to.
Enjoyed meeting an honest and humble person. Some great insight for me and all other musicians. Thanks Marcus.
holy shit, such an enlightening conversation to me, on many levels
love that marcus recorded his setup from his end, hearing him clearly play bass as he talks just adds so much to what he is saying
be my love is one my favourites still!
WOW! This interview might be the best Marcus made. Thanks!
Beautiful interview.
Thank you Marcus!!! Thank you Mitch!!!! Great interview!
This is one of my favorite videos. I've learned a lot from marcus miller in a short time. He's truly a legend
One of the best interview of MM! So much information.
What a humble man and great musician! This is one of the best interviews I have seen. Thank you Marcus for being honest and real!
My god, watching Marcus' face while he plays is a thing itself.
Great interview. Marcus plays so cleanly, and knows what is needed and when. The look on his face when he plays tells you everything.
Sweetwater is as good an interviewer as Marcus is a musician! Really great to listen too, thankyou đ đ
Thanks to Sweetwater and Marcus. I hit like when I read his name. Then I watched the video and wished I could hit it again!
I could listen and learn all day for years.. thanks for putting this together!
Thanks for watching, Wayne! đđ
Getting a glimpse into this manâs insight is pure Gold! Thank you!
The cat that told him about tone wish he was around here to teach me .I love his tone . Didnât know who was playing I just knew thatâs what I wanted to sound like
Marcus did some serious unlocking right there, not only about the bass but about musicianship in general. What an insight! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this wonderful interview and playing demonstration / performance of Marcus Miller. Like you said Marcus, I am also blessed to be an elementary school music teacher and wake up to create and perform music with my students.
I've seen bass clinics hosted by 4-6 bassist over hours and I got more practical information from 1 guy in 45 minutes in this video this was great thank you Marcus not for just the music but for making yourself available
"Perceiving groove" Ooooh yes !
A big thank you to both Marcus and Sweetwater for this!
đđ
I just had a big Ol Smile the whole interview đđđđđđđ
This was a great interview.
One of the most talented and versatile musicians on the planet!!!
Marcus is soooo talented and awesome, But he is so very humble and practical in his approach. Thanks for a wondeerful interview!
Loved this! Marcus will always be the GOAT in my eyes and I always take something away from his interviews.
Now that is what I call a master class.
Awesome interview. Marcus conveys in it so much musical wisdom and knows how to motivate us all so well.
Marcus is awesome !! What a talent,
I was at a bass clinic he did 10 years ago, what a wealth on knowledge & experience .
I think this video has almost nothing to do with it's title. But Marcus is just incredible - both as a personality and a musician. And so willing to share his experience - I got fascinated by his story and the way he told it, he's just like your buddy, that's priceless
I enjoyed this so, so much!!! I grew up reading albums sleeves, in particular, Luther Vandross albums and would say, "who is this Marcus Miller who is tearing up the bass so well?" and wouldn't really know what to do with that question. And here he is, still vibrant, still creating, still dazzling with his playing. What a great inspiration to keep on with music in whatever way I can. Be blessed Brother Miller. So much respect for all you've done!
Whenever he plays, he smiles. And that's it right there.
Marcus is just mesmerizing. His skills are without a doubt impeccable and worth learning from! Thereâs nothing Marcus hasnât done..and if he hasnât done it yet..he will!!!
great interview! Marcus is a nice guy, beyond his outstanding skills as a musician, and in addition he is able to share really interesting stuff with the audience. I have seen the whole video without skipping a single second of it. Thanks for the good job!
Marcus Miller what an amazing guy...hes background of history relative to his journey in music So much talent with a humble nature! I love listening to his story really inspires musicians old or new...thankyou for your story!
Thank you very much Sweetwater for this interview, always an inspiration Marcus.
I am a bass player, like Marcus said: Tone, Groove, Tempo and Space. If you have those thing, you are a good player.
Love how his basses sound
