@@lucpet95a lot of old guys (particularly boomers) tend to stick to their own. Most Millenials and Zoomers can’t tolerate them, so they also kinda band together. There’s a huge divide in the music world (really everywhere) between when they made “good music” and whatever is out there now. Rick is doing a great job of bridging the two, both for the sake of the younger generations, the older generations, and just anyone uninformed in or out of the music world.

Indian classical music is always about improvisation on stage. Conversation she refers to is this improvisation. It is rather usual to see one Musician taking the song in a particular direction and then others just go mad improvising. That is a conversation piece. It is different from playing a set song, there is beauty of familiarity there but musicality is limited to how tight you are as a band, small improvs here and there and how good the composition is. Her concerts do not have much familiarity but for the start

And Bangla). Have you ever heard of Ms Marvel? One of the most famous songs from there comes from Eva B, a musician from Pakistan. One of Asia’s first bands come from West Bengal - Mohiner Ghoraguli in the 70). They were revolutionary at a time when soundtracks from movies ruled the music industry. A progressive rock band, Qayyas, was the first Pakistani rock bands to play at SXSW. Rock On, a movie based on a band, was featured on Rolling Stones. Another Bengali band, Bhoomi, became one of the only Indian bands who had a song for the United Nations. I can go on.

Yes truly. But I want to say something that I believe. Her father, that is Mohini's father seems like a very strong headed person.
I think Mohini should actually consider her extended family's intentions to safeguard her from being indoctrinated to play the bass. It seems that they were concerned about her. I think many parents may fall into the trap of trying to live their dreams through the children, almost not leaving any room for the child to grow and have their own dreams.
Maybe she should consider that - it could be a possibility. A child must show interest in something, before we set about exploring how deep their love for it is.

Absolutely brilliant interview, Rick!!!! I love that you just let people talk and your follow Qs are so insightful. And I loved seeing your joy as she just whipped out a Victor Wooten and started playing it as easily as she ran through her scales and modes and effects pedals. Brilliant talent she is!!!!
Good luck with the move Mohini!!!

Absolutely admire the clarity and precision of her thoughts and her playing! Also love the way she translates Indian polyrhythms on to the bass for the western listener (these rhythms are commonplace in Indian music). There are in fact are beat cycles like Sare-panch (five and a half beats) or Sare-Na (nine and a half beats). Indian percussion go to such incredible complexity and depth, very glad that a virtuoso like Dey is embracing and incorporating these into a western instrument for a wider audience.
