- Bass legend Marcus Miller stops by #ChicagoMusicExchange to show us his line of signature Sire basses.
Marcus Miller and SIRE wants to see everyone enjoying and playing music. To make this happen, Marcus Miller and SIRE have been on a mission for past several years to build the best quality bass at a price that is unheard of and make it available to everyone.
The result is a new line of Marcus Miller bass models that are awesome sounding, fantastic looking, and high quality but extraordinarily low priced. We are happy that SIRE Marcus Miller basses are now available and anticipate more people to play and enjoy music.
William Henry Marcus Miller Jr. is an American film composer, jazz composer, record producer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist, best known as a bassist. He has worked with trumpeter Miles Davis, pianist Herbie Hancock, singer Luther Vandross, and saxophonist David Sanborn, among others. Miller spent approximately 15 years performing as a session musician. During that time he also arranged and produced frequently. He was a member of the Saturday Night Live band between 1979-1981. He co-wrote Aretha Franklin's "Jump To It" along with Luther Vandross. He has played bass on over 500 recordings, appearing on albums by such artists as Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Herbie Hancock, Mariah Carey, Eric Clapton, The Crusaders, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Frank Sinatra, George Benson, Dr. John, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Joe Walsh, Jean-Michel Jarre, Grover Washington Jr., Donald Fagen, Bill Withers, Bernard Wright, Kazumi Watanabe, Chaka Khan, LL Cool J and Flavio Sala. He won the "Most Valuable Player" award (given by NARAS to recognize studio musicians) three years in a row and was subsequently awarded "player emeritus" status and retired from eligibility. In the nineties, Miller began to write his own music and make his own records, putting a band together and touring regularly.

Now THIS is how you introduce a new instrument, clear explanations and examples of how everything works along with the perfect pacing of explaination/playing.
...but specially playing it like the legend he is. That helps.
Needless to say, you have one of the greatest bass players in the world demonstrating it.
Mine is coming in on Tues. I'm sold.
5:16 Ultimate explanation of "What's that pick-up cover for?" (it cracked me up!!) :-D
what a troll :D
"...and now i can't play without it. Well, i *_can_* play *(my name is on the bass),* I feel more comfortable with it...."
Lmao
For a split second I thought he was serious. LOL!
@@Purpleskyshorizon same 😂
What a personable guy. Helping out the young bassist who doesn't have much money. Kudos to Marcus!
Marcus seems like such a cool, nice dude
Jimmy Karlsson I met him and he is super nice and cool!!
Yep, me too. I can confirm that impression...
Marcus Miller is the black reincarnation of Mitch Hedberg (ignore the fact that he was born long before Mitch died ... it's some sort of timelord paradox thing). I swear they totally sound like the same person.
He is a cool dude....I met him after a show last year, the first time I ever heard & saw him perform live...and I was greatly impressed! I hung around a little after the performance was over..... and as I was leaving I turned and spotted him coming back out of the break room area...and at first, I didn't know what to do, you know, "this is Marcus Miller, the Marcus Miller", I thought to myself. But I managed to hold it together, will never forget it...
By all accounts, Marcus Miller is very cool, down-to-earth, and not all caught up in his own "hubris"... a humble, approachable man.
Man, I wish guitarist ran through their signature guitars like. This was so good.
I hope people who make bass demos can learn from this in-depth demonstration and explanation. There are lots of demos out there with people trying to show off. I love the way Marcus breaks things down here! Just lovely.
He really got me at the pickup cover thing lol
"I didn't know you were allowed to take things off the bass" Epic :p
That's the best infomercial for a musical instrument I've ever seen!! buying one now...
Same here. Bass with that sound for 600 bucks? I am so in. I've been looking for this for years
@@ChromeTecNina I have never played one, but remember, an old trick in the music store is to plug you into a really high end amplifier. Markbass is high end. If this is for budget sound, I would have liked to have heard it through a budget sound amplifier and cabinet.
@@brentward5739 have you played one yet? They're the real deal, my friend bought one to learn Bass on and he plays it through a little fender rumble amp and it still sounds great
"I hear all the pops, but I don't hear any of da booty."
I did.
My V7 5 string has plenty of booty... Gotta use some quality headphones to pick it up...or get one yourself.
Clean item : Important :-)
I have one of these and with tone up and pre-amp on there is tremendous bottom end sound. use it through a standard Crate BX100 with an Orange micro (dark territory), but no pedal effects. I have a 66 Jazz bass with Seymour Duncan pickups, and it sounds as deep as that. Will upload something soon for a compare and contrast. Peace
It's his trademark sound. The sound that makes him famous. His tone is not known for being deep and growly like the sound of P-basses so don't expect that from him.
Good idea to build an affordable functional bass that sounds good too. Hats off to Marcus for a great presentation/ review and top notch playing of different styles to show what the bass can do. His sincerity and honesty comes through as well.
Murcus miller is soooooo good...
Sagi Dash marcus is more than good he is a GIANT !! Y also a great composer
And a really great arranger and producer!
I was thinking the same thing.
Sagi Dash pode ajudar se inscrever no meu canal obrigado
I don't even play bass and I want one.
I hate bass and I want one
@@jonandrews6018 How can you hate bass
that's usually how it starts
When I was growing up we use to have our church conferences at school gymnasiums. Hearing him talk about altering your mid range to accommodate the sound in there made me wish I knew that back then.
Yeah. It's also echo chamber halls for wedding receptions and corporate functions. That knowledge is a good tool for having a good gig and callbacks!
He always encourages kids to engage with music, and to back that up he makes sure his basses are excellent quality but affordable. Funkateer of the highest calibre : ) my fave musician of all time. Thanks Marcus.
I have a V7 5 string and absolutely love it!! I'm thankful for the effort Sire and Marcus put into making such a versatile base that is of outstanding high quality! Definite game changer.
I have one of the first 1000 v7s that Marcus actually signed on the back and it sounds great!
Marcus Miller = constant excellence (through times when music truly needs artists like Marcus Miller, at that)
Marcus could sell me a stick with a shoe string on it and I'd need it asap
smorgy Same. Lol
Lol yeah but ... these basses are actually awesome, just like Marcus even said something like this in the vid, I have 2 (M7 and P7) and plan on getting a V9 or maybe V7 by the end of the year. I have 14 basses currently and the P7 is my favorite and accounts for like 80% of my playing time.
I own 5 Sires right now and I own the new mics as well. My CZcams channel is nothing but Sire haha
lol awesome comment, and i feel the same way.
because you're a fucking pleb ~
One thing I like about Mr Miller is that he likes the deep bass sound in all his riffs and songs he plays. Some guys bass sound like a guitar.
Many bands or artists have their success also because of the strong bass tone, something that many modern artists are lacking of
I love the quality of the sire bass very nice tone and great flexible choices of sound. It's all about the sound I'm sold. Great bass at a nice price thank you for dropping by.
I'm excited to see that MM has so much energy and passion for this bass. Just a cool dude backwards and forwards.
I just ordered the 5 string P bass version and it looks like it'll be a lot of fun.
I’ve never heard any of this explained so well. Love Marcus. Love this vid.
This man gave Luther Vandross those sick Bass lines on all his classics !
Oh Yeah
yup, decided to get one today. this thing is a beast!!!! very happy with it
i'm thrilled with my V7 5 string! I swore that I would never get a Jazz bass and a signature bass. OOOOPS! This is one of the best basses that I have ever owned or played! Marcus and Sire really designed a killer bass. For the money, you can't beat it!
Legend, amazing man, musician. Trying to Make music accessible to the masses to be enjoyed by the masses. Enthusiasm is infectious. Bless you man.
Wow, I've ashamed to say that I've owned that bass for many years now without actually looking up the different actual functions of the knobs until now! Crazy. After watching this video I immediately managed to get much better tone out of the thing! Needless to say, I'm not really a bass player. This really helped me! I also learned that cranking up the compression on my mixer really helps.
I had the chance to meet Marcus Miller twice, before and after a concert, once at the Seine Musicale in Paris and once at the Blue Note in New York. How not to be surprised by the fact that this great artist with his worldwide fame and his talent can remain so accessible, attentive and coupled with great kindness?
Certainly a great lesson to give to artists whose emerging success goes to their heads !
My choice fell on the Sire U5 short scale, an excellent choice for learning the bass when you are a complete beginner !
Sold my Fender USA Jazz Bass and bought 2 V7's! The best thing i ever did!
Interesting..
USA Fender Jazz basses ain't nothing special.Look out for some Yamaha BB basses my friend, you may sell your V7's soon after that ;).
@@savanaviolenta I used to own a BB614, that aint nothing special either.
A totally cool dude. Met him once at a gig in Manhattan. Took time to speak with fans and speak with people. He is one of my all-time favorite bassists of all time. One of the greats.
love this video, as you said Marcus you've allowed the bass and customers to testify of its quality. I've watched an interview with you before and you've acknowledged your Trinidadian heritage and I'm a Trinidadian and so proud to say that I purchased the Sire M7 and had NO regrets. The tonal range of the Bass is SO amazing and I say hats off to you and Sire for giving us the GAME CHANGER of an instrument. I also appreciate this video because you've showed us the tonal versatility of the Bass and situations where the can be best used. A heartfelt Thanks from a SATISFIED Trinidadian Owner/Customer. I'm considering the V7 but my wife might have a problem with another guitar in the house lol. Thanks again man
Thanks Marcus for this awesome tutorial this is what I've been searching for , perfect and straight forward , greatly appreciate this and from what I'm reading and hearing these are awesome basses !
Thanks for posting this…. Love the Bass and what Marcus plays
I have a new respect for Marcus - He seems like a really nice guy, very approachable and can groove!
Finally, a review without all the BS. I've learned a lot about the product! Thank you!
A joy just to see you play.
I love that "growl" of the bass guitar!! Marcus Miller is funky!!! Love him!!!
we need more guitar / bass demo like the way Marcus explains his guitar. style and knowledge!
Thank you for exact explanation
I LOVE THAT BASS💖
The best bass guitar sound demo. Respect Miller!
He is a legend, come from far in any genre of music, thumbs up
now this is supposedly the correct way to do a bass or guitar demo. thank you mr. miller
Marcus' experience just shows when he plays, dude.... just way too cool
9:34 "The bass-ics of the bass". Thanks, I'm here all week.
I remember 4 years ago this video coming out, 3 years later i saw a burgundy v7 in my local music store, tried it and i was choked at how good it felt and sounded unplugged (always a good sign). I immediately brought it home and i’m always amazed how good this instrument is compared to some vintages basses i own such as Warwick or Yamaha. Thank you Marcus
Thanks so much, Marcus .I was lucky enough to pick up a pre owed v9, and it's amazing. the tonal range is killing. Thanks for explaining the controls as they took a bit of learning when I first got it, but now I've got to know it I love it.
One of the best. Love Mr. Miller.
This is a very nice bass. I can say that Marcus added his energy to this instrument. Thank you. Very good job.
I´m not even a bassist but this man makes me more interested in this instrument than many other bassists.
Cool, thank's a lot Marcus for demonstrating the use of the tone controls in depth, especially the mid-sweep which I have a much better concept of now.
This is one of the coolest dudes ever! I own this particular bass, I didn’t know much about it, this has been the best informative video about an artist series instrument.
What a class act. I remember when my parents bought my first bass when I was a kid. In the 70s, there wasn’t a lot of options to get a quality instrument at a decent price (as we know, buying a cheap instrument can lead to bad playing habits that can take years to break). I’ve been playing bass for over 40years and I just purchased a Sire online without even playing one because of all the buzz. I’m excited to see how it sounds compared to my other basses. 👍
I`m ordering a Sire M7 6 string this Tuesday. I owned a John Myung Yamaha siganture bass that cost 1300 euros 20 years ago. Now his Bongo Music Man is around 3000 euros. John Patitucci`s Yamaha TRBJP is around 4000 euros. I also owned a Steve Bailey Fender 6 string which cost 2500 euros ( and wasn`t very good bass). So thank you Marcus Miller for doing the opposite of every other known bass player today.
Thanks for explaining all the knobs. Man you are good. Great sounds. Thanks
Thnx Marcus and CME!!!
How can you not like this guy.. Too down to earth
Guitar Store Employee of the Month = Marcus Miller!
What a great job he does demonstrating that bass! How could you not want to buy it after that demonstration? I can sense his enthusiasm for the instrument.
Wow ! This bass sounds awesome!
Soon as heard the "Run For Cover" intro @ 2:46 I said Yep! Got my coat and cheque book and was down the shops to purchase my copy.
I could listen to this guy all day.
Just awesome! I am not new to guitar but I am to bass and this one looks like the way for me to go. Thank You Marcus!!!

I could listen to Marcus Miller play all day.
I just got the five-string. Lovely bass. The pre-amp is everything he promises.
Top notch individual. Thanks for giving back.
Thank you for the intro too.
LOVE my new P7 5-string that arrived last week. This bass most certainly IS a game-changer. I agree wholeheartedly.
I, of course, think it's extra cool that my all time favorite bass player has his name on it.
May the success continue!
How cool! Very cool to know a little more about Marcus Miller!
A great idol!
Proud Sire Marcus Miller M5 player...
One reason for the pride, is the man in this video!
The other reasons are the quality points of this bass!!
If you don't have one, get one! (If you can);)
Wow love them
Gorgeous bass
Sounds great
im really considering getting one of these! that bass sounds sweet!!!
i got my 5-string bass Marcus MiIller P7 SIRE, i have NO way to express my satisfaction on this bass guitar, it totally went over my expectations! i am very satisfied and the highs and lows , mids are simple awesome! y'all need to get this bass guitar! more power to SIRE and Mr. Marcus MIller.
Marcus, I had a chance to meet you at the Gerald Veasely's 'Bass Boot Camp' in Philly. Thank for being such a personable guy. You took time to take pictures with every one who wanted to take a picture (and there were a lot).
Now on to the bass, you are right. This is a bass for most players who want to play. I took it to my tech to have it set up, and he commented on what a good quality bass it was. And this price is still well below what you'd have to pay for a bass of this quality.Thank you for such a good quality bass. Yes I would recommend this bass, easily!!!
A great video by the greatest bass player!
That mark cab tho.😍😍😍😍
i bought one from the chicago music exchange and love it!
I’m going to see Marcus perform this Sunday in London - very excited! He usually uses a Sire for a couple of tunes then goes back to his Fender - let’s see what happens! It’s a great bass, and I love his philosophy behind it’s design and price point.
Great presentation. !!!
THEE COOLEST BASS PLAYER ON PLANET EARTH !!!! I’m new to Marcus Miller and started to listening to him about past 6 months. Just an awesome guy
sounds so good. good jobs done!
I just ordered mine today!
MARCUS make a DISCO-FUNK records please! Make what NILE RODGERS did with Daft Punk but with the bass. Something in the vein of Cerrone-Gino Soccio-Brothers Johnson-Kool and the gang-Kc and sunshine band etc...It would be a blast i'm sure!!!
Uhh...you are a fucking genius with ideas like this...3 years later and here we wait haha
@@sacrimony8799 and you are a poor IDIOT because this would be great for Marcus in the same way it was for Stanley Clarke that recorded one of the best disco-funk record of all time so shut up
@@margix1172 I literally meant that as it being an actual good idea but hey I’m glad you were able to have a good pout from not understanding context.
Great presentation!
Thanks! Very useful
Just bought a P7 and V7,...... KILLER basses! Thanks
I love this men.
His guitar is very good....incredible !
What a cool guy. His AWSOME! I want that bass!
Great demo. I love my V7. Marcus puts it where the goats can get it!
Marcus, thank you so very much for demoing YOUR bass. Its good when the person who the bass is named for demos it! Because, you know what the bass can do and what all of the controls are meant to do,and you also add some integrity to the instrument. Sometimes musicians have signature instruments and do't even play at all on stage. Yes,you do have a' game changer' in the bass guitar industry. I'm sure other bass makers are trying to do the same thing in making a relativity inexpensive bass. You just showed with your bass that a good bass doesn't have to cost a fortune! Again Thank You a lot for the demo. When I can find one on these bass,I' m certainly going to buy one.
My favorite bass, hands down. No joke. I bought a Sire V7 after playing one from a buddy of mine and in my honest opinion, it sounds better than my 97’ American Fender Jazz 5.
Marcus is a phantastic bass player but also seems like a great guy. What a role model!
Thanks for explaining. Just bought a V3.
