This is my 3rd Sire bass, compared to about 10 Fender Jazz and P-Basses.

When comparing, shouldn't you consider price equivalent? The Fender Am Pro cost more than twice the MM V7. The fact is, I've got 2 brand-new Fender Am Pros bought a month apart, one is J, and the other is the P bass. Then I got the V10 and since then I've put the 2 Fenders to rest. I mean, the Sire Marcus Miller IS that good. You are missing the point. I'm currently waiting for the P10 and I'll be happy.
I kinda agree with you. I have the P10. That is above a Fender Ultra in terms of quality and features, looks. it's a boutique bass. The new V5 is like a Fender American Pro. Just sounds better. A lot better. I bought it too. I love Fender and have a few, and I discovered MM Sires. They are better for less. That being said - Fender basses..well there are so many - from 1960 to 2020, you can buy them all - and they all sound a bit different. So the best Fender Jazz bass - will be a Fender Jazz Bass etc ..but what year? I think the Sire's are trying to go after the sound of older Fenders. While the new Fender products are trying to having a modern , clean sound. That's why I went after Sire - it has more of a Fender sound than today's Fender, to me. Interesting conversation.
@@massivebeatzz I AM COMPLETELY AGREE. FOR ME MARCUS MULLER ARE BETTER TO ME. I HAVE TRIED BOTH. The V7 2nd generation saounds way better than my YAMAHA TRB JP2

Okay, Yeah, but who on earth is actually making that shopping decision? it’s priced slightly cheaper than a fender player series, so how does it compare to that is the real question in my book.
The Sires are great basses. Fender are getting overpriced. And who cares if they’re basically Fender copies? People have been making strat and tele copies for decades, and many of them are better than “the real deal”.
yeap - and I think Fender makes copies of Fender. They had a great bass since 1951 til 1970ies, and since then have been copying it - or re-imagining it slightly.
All Basses come from Fender and/or Gibson. All Basses are one or a combination of them both, modified. ALL BASSES-History.

@@massivebeatzz well, to be fair every time fender or Gibson try anything different, people complain it's not the classic...and even when they do go to the trouble of making a separate contemporary version, people will complain about the name :-D
I have 2 Sires. I sold my Fender J and was able to buy both basses with the money. V3-5 and V7-4-Fretless. Both kill it. That Fender logo costs too much money.

I only have good things to say about Sire. They never seem to go out of tune, tone range is immense- every guitarist I have played with loves their sound . Not just for Funk / slap guys , I play classic rock - play up at the neck and you get a Geezer Butler sound ..,, need I say more?

I put a set of Hip Shot ultra light tuners on my 2nd gen 5 string P7 and it is now balanced much better. I emailed Sire about a screw on my bridge and the immediately sent me a whole new bridge so service I found to be good. Love mine and it sounds so good!

I have a fender Jazz and love it, but when I got the V9, that's what I play more than the jazz.
It came ready to play. It's good to have two different basses.

I love my Fender P and J basses and for a long time i only bought the big "F" brand.
But now i bought my first Marcus Miller V7 swamp ash and this instrument blows me away.
It' s the hell of a modern sounding J-Bass and the neck is so awesome, so easy to play.

I picked up a p7 5 string, swapped all the hardware and pickups to my preferences, even had a custom made pickguard made, and still cheaper than a fender equivalent. My dream Pbass and a fun project!

Direct purchase of a Sire/Fender is not anything anyone should compare. I looked at it as a well built base with a great preamp, to use as a starting point for some custom work. A beginner/intermediate bassist would do well with a sire out of box right away
Oh really, this is good information about Sire basses. I have a Sire P7 bass, and it serves a similar purpose to Fender basses.

In my opinion for the price , playability , tones & build the 2nd gen P7 is extremely hard to beat
Thinking I might get one of these. I play guitar primarily but looking for a bass just so I've got one of the need crops up. Don't want to fork out too much cash and these seem perfect.
You can't go wrong with them. My current favorite is the new V5 model, I'd say.
I have seen v5 5 string and v3 5 string but which one is better? The v3 is cheaper but they look exactly the same just the headstocks color is different. I don't know which one should I get?
If you can - get the V5. The wood is so much better! V5 even better than V7 if you don't need active eletronics.

How come some people dislike this video so much? I think you compared the two brands very well. I liked how you compared Sire to American Fenders because the comparison revealed that Sire's V7 series isn't a lesser product at all. I'd love to try a Sire 5-string jazz bass!

If I wanted a Fender, I'd buy a Fender. I hate Fenders. I'll take my Sire any day of the week. Plays better, sounds better, has "top of the line pickups and parts" (My opinion). People complain about the knob. Big deal. Easy fix, but I like the knobs. I've been playing bass for 30 years and owned many basses over the years. I do speak from experience, but again, it's my opinion, not fact.

Been playing, servicing and building basses for 30 years. I don't know much about Sire basses. But there is one model deserving high praise. The Sire M5 Marcus Miller signature model. Pickups, preamp, quality of build and the actual components used are very good. I base these comments on one I bought recently. For the price I paid? Outstanding 5 string electric. I defer to the presenter for information about other Sire models. Some of the ones I've seen in stores over the years? they look, well, not so hot. Priced very low though. Liked and Subscribed. Nice presentation and production.

Yes, I just saw him this past weekend and he used his fender for the entire show, although he came out later and played with other artists on the marquee but I didn't see what he was using at that point. It should be noted that the Sire was on the stage but sat in the guitar stand for the entire set.
Yes sometimes he uses the Sire, I see it quite often in videos...But his main bass is his Fender. He will never change that.... It will be hard to find that exact bass...it's very special... his magic weapon.

Not really. It will depend if you have ash or alder body. Also I have the V7 5 String, which is quite a bit heavier
I have the Ash v7. I tried the p7 and it was noticeably lighter but I didn't like the nobs. They were more rubbery on the P7. The v7 is more hard plastic.
In general, yes I'd say they are heavy, but you can specifically request them to keep the weight down when you order one. I own 3, and my lightest (ash body) weighs in around 8.5lbs.
The old 1. generation Sire's had a reputation of fluctuating a lot in weight. The have fixed that with the new 2. gens.
P-basses are generally a bit lighter than j-basses.
A V7 4-string is typically around 9 to 9.5 lbs.
I own 3 Sire basses (all 4 string though): An original V3, an original V7 vintage, and a V3 fretless. IMO, there is no better jazz bass (or any bass for that matter) to be had at this price point. Plus, I'm a lefty, and no other company freely offers up left handed models with as many options. Sire's CS/Mickey is 1st rate. I had an issue with my new V7 arriving with a bad bridge PUP. Not only did they send me a replacement PUP free, but they also paid my guitar tech's fee to install it! Negatives? I think the bump in price by $300-$400 more for a 2nd generation model isn't worth it, as the originals were a great bargain. Maybe the PUPs are improved, but nothing I couldn't correct with proper EQ. (And if sound is your main reason for rejecting these basses, you can swap in great aftermarket PUPs for far less than $400). Rolled fretboard edges might feel slightly better, but honestly, there was nothing wrong with the originals. The battery compartment is now 1 piece wood, which looks better, but it means a longer time to swap new batteries. I like the cheaper plastic flip up compartments. Yes, they were junk and were guaranteed to break, but I replaced mine with better cheap ones I found on Amazon for $10. In short, buy a 1st gen model if you really want a steal of a great bass.

I had two and BOTH wouldn’t stay in tune and both of them had frets popping through the plastic strip on the side of the neck. I sold them both! I also have seen a couple used ones at music stores and they had that same issue with the frets. Sounded great though!!
were they version 2 or the original versions of the V7/P7's? Don't seem to see that on mine.

Half way through in and I have to say I've bought a brand other than Fender for my Precision and Squire for my Jazz bass . After all the work I put into them . They sound better than any of Fenders stock stuff. Upgrading hardware is not difficult . I've found great quality pickups , machineheads , bridges etc for a very good prices . So Fender has kinda shit themselves in the foot with their horrible price increases. Very good review though .

knock off would imply fake - trying to pass it off as Fenders, in my book. The Headstock, and many other things about it are different enough, that"inspired by Fender" or such is more accurate. It's clearly trying to be similar to Fender. But they are not trying to fool anybody that this is a Fender. That's what I am trying to say (or how I interpret Knock Off). Point being though - they are very similar, with some differences.
Own both early V7 like a boat anchor, P7 a great bass after setting it up. Squier classic vibe 70's precision just purchased also fab.

It has a different headstock because the Fender is patented. And yes, the Sire can be neck heavy. If you want a active version of a J, they're a great choice at a great price. Other than that, I couldn't care less that Marcus uses it.

Having a patent on a headstock shape is so stupid to begin with... I wonder who allowed this 😂. But luckily I think the Sire headstock looks quite nice!

Just got a V5 2nd gen 4 string in burst and I couldn’t be happier. Probably sell my MIM Fender, don’t need it. Everyone seems to compare the Sire basses with Fender Pro or American made Fenders, which sets a high standard. In reality, compare the Sire to a MIM Fender or Squire and it will blow them away IMO. No setup required, just tune it up and play. And yes electronics may be on the cheaper side but how else are you gonna meet, the price point. You can always upgrade the electronics but you get a American Alder body and an awesome roasted hard maple neck. I went with a passive bass, and glad I did. I bought mine from Thomann and they got it to me in California in 3 1/2 days from Germany!
Nice!! Enjoy. I do compare the V5 with an American Pro, as I had one, which was great - but this beats it. Roasted maple, and better sound. Otherwise close. MIM's and Squiers are more like Sire V3's in my book. The new P10 and V10's beat an Ultra , as they are boutique basses. I also think the V5 beats the V7 line - that raw, funky sound is just a home run. My test results , lol.
My sounds great, but as you pointed out the tuners are a plastic mess. I am going to change it to a passive bass with three tuners. But that is only my opionion. Otherwise and overall for the money, it is well worth the money.

Well, i own 3 sires, 2 v7 and 1 used v3 that i just purchased for 200 buks just to keep it in my friends home that i don´t have to carrie it when trveling by plane. Only doing that saves me money and annoy and i get a reliable bass
I think the reputation of bad hardware came from the old 1. Generation Sire's having bad tuners.
I have had two tuners replaced under warranty on my 1. Gen V7.
But Sire fixed that a long time ago. They switched to better tuners when they released the 1. Gen P7 and I think all the models have them now, even the V3's.
good point. Thw P7 were better than V7 in generation one, and then in Generation 2 everybody caught up.

i talk with marcus all the time on social media he plays them etc i have many fenders ive been plaing since 1980 i bought a sire v3 5 sting i bought it because i dont use a 5 string that much but when i need one this one only cost 400 bucks.it plays excellent the preamp cant be beat for the price rolled edges very comfortable and qaulity wood i agree hardware is equal to a squier bass etc but you could replace it if you felt you had to.i really like the bass i cant really knock it for the money in my opinion they are better than squier you can get a great tone and right our of the box this bass can be played it was set up very nice and thats important for a beginner.improperly set up basses can turn a beginner off because intonation poor action etc if you are a beginner this bass will make you want to play it.they are solid they sound really nice and for the price you cannot go wrong if you stick with it and start getting better as a player you may want a high end fender etc ive seen pros playing sires and i do know many great players pick up a sire for the price and sound and having an extra bass etc you wont be sorry if you looking to become a bass player and if you are already a bass player i think youll agree these are above par for the money

my biggest complain about sire 2nd gen is that i can't get the action low enough, the fret are just too high for me ( 2.4 medium i think) . i don't have this problem on the 1rst gen as they have 2.0 small fret but on the first gen the neck is glossy and unconfortable and the pickup are not that great. give me a Sire with the fretboard of the 1rst gen but the electronic and neck of the 2nd gen and i could not be more happy.
hmm interesting good point - never noticed that. I like the 1st gen more premium feel with glossy necks (I don't sweat, so it helps for faster playing hehe) - but thinking of it - the 1st gen I had definitely had the lowest action of all and no fretbuzz.
@@massivebeatzz yeah on my 1rst gen, the G saddle is so low it touch the body and still no fretbuzz even when i dig a little. i think it will become my main bass all over again. :)

my v5 was heavy, pre amp static, 11 fret ends were sharp. kicked it back and got a Carvel, made in mexico.

i had a 1st gen M3, V7 5, P7, V7 4..all sold now because i was younger, lesser commitment then, buying power was great thus i sold to get boutique basses. Bear in mind, not that they are not good. They are great.. curiosity of exploring basses was the only reason.
A good 4 years later, married, a baby and refocusing on my priorities, i sold my boutiques... fodera nyc, 2 f bass, 2 dingwalls. They are great basses but i have greater priorities.
I still have essential basses left of course for that side projects, gigs and relaxation of the soul.
My number one top essential bass is a Sire M7 2nd gen ash 5...it is my workhorse, the voicing of the pickup, the string spacing adjustment possibility, the 18v headroom, the preamp valve adjustment in the cavity, that string through body availability.. that pre amp with mid range control, tone control even when on active.... all these in the Sire M7, that series parallel and single coil tap and the simplest of reason of the bass in my arms and i just want to play with it non stop... it does put some of the boutique to shame... more possibilities than some boutique can offer and all these available functions are very usable.
It is quiet and delivers a variety of tone character definitions for recording. For live and jam, it is able to sit well in the mix or cut through when you need.
Just sharing my opinion and little experience wih Sire hehe.... and i still use the stock knobs, haha, just some self adjustments does the trick for the knobs to do well

You should compare it with squier classic vibe or a mexican made fender insted with a fender us made its like comparing fobera with fender or a fender us with a squier i strongly believe that it is quite unfair
no, I tried Squier or MIM Fender. Marcus Miller is much better. It's as good as Fender USA. The new V5 is better than a USA American Professional. I own them both. The new P10 (also own) at 1300 dollars is better than an Elite for 2100. My opinion. I had tons of USA Fenders. The only Fenders that can compete and are better are old Fenders, 60ies, 70ies. They were made great, and the time ages them well. Nothing compares. And Fodera is basses for old men. They seem to like them a lot. But sorry, I really don't like them.

I have owned several: Fenders, Squiers, Carvins, Ibanez, Lakland Skyline, and my newest Bass is a Sire P 5.
My Fender 08' Am Std is my favorite bass, next to mt Skyline. But 2 Squiers I owned were better than the Sire.
My Sire is decent but I'm not in love with it. It has a nice neck, but it has a neck dive, and it goes out of tune with Chrome flats.

I heard that Sire basses has a great preamp and pups, sometimes Fender basses has raggedy pickups depending on the model.
Sire basses, as mentioned have fewer models, and they all have the same couple of pickups and pre-amp systems. Fender changes by so many models, years , decades. Some are raggedy, some are vintage goodness, some are super solid and some are just too bright, clean and frankly, cold.
Have a fender ultra jazz and P bass plus a sire P5 P bass and hands down pound for pound the Sire wins hands down

Your video is right on point. Sire and Shire are middle of the road companies. It's hit or miss depending on your budget. As a modding platform, this could work.
I bought a P8 a few months ago and initially loved it… until it cut out while I was on stage. Turns out there's a design flaw in the jack. The terminal pin is too flimsy and bends to the point where it stops making contact with the plug. I will never trust it again. (I'm selling it on eBay… someone else can fix it.) As for the Indonesia thing… right now I think Indonesian instruments are *the best*. Fender's QC in both Mexico and the U.S. is garbage these days.

Also I'm tired of Fender price hike. Now Squire is going up in price. Couple years ago Squier Classic vibe was $300-$350. Now $400(if lucky) but usually $450-$500. They are releasing anniversary basses. Ripoff of $600

The fender does sound like a fender, the sire sounds different.
thanks for chiming in! You might be right. I am also testing the V5 on my channel - and that one, being passive and with roasted maple, sounds more Fender than most of my Fenders. I wonder what you;d think.
I think that at the level where we are, Fender sell the brand. there is nothing special about the fender. however with marcus we really feel the difference. especially in quality / price ratio, sire is at the top. have guitars with a multitude of setups, I think it's impossible
I agree with the comment that they are not as well balanced. That's one thing I'm learning to work with with my five string. The rest of the video comments were just snowflake bulshit.
When you're ready to upgrade, take your savings you've been accumulating just for the occasion and invest in a Smith. You will never regret spending the money. And you will be a bass player!
Personally not a fan of those soundwise - but they are excellent quality basses, so might be good advice for some viewers. Others might not be able to afford that Also, lately the P10 and V10 boutique basses clock in above most fenders and others in terms of sound & features- the downside is that these are now in the 1500 dollar range, pricing themselves out of their original market,

At some point you have to decide how much you're willing to invest. Depends on what you want from the music...a living, a hobby, fun, etc. But to each his/her own. Lots of options out there for sure. Buy what you like, not necessarily what might be the most cost effective. For me, that means a Smith.

True, but your ability is definitely enhanced depending on the model you wrap yourself around. Otherwise, it wouldn't make a difference which model you choose. Believe me, it makes a big difference.

not exactly. They are trying to make the same Fender guitar with minimal changes. They just can't nail it ;) Their 501 is their holy grail, and they are still chasing it. Others move on, and do a 511 ;) tapered legs too buddy.

you didn't watch the video then? I have multiple Sires and this isn't a review - this is a discussion about what people think of Sire basses. And even if I would - a Sire PJ is a Jazz Bass with a split pickup. Jazz neck, and hardware is from the V7 Jazz Bass models. Build quality is same.p.s for specific Sire model reviews and tests, they are on my channel, some without talk.
I played one when they first came out. Looked great, played and sounded awesome BUT weighed a ton. I told Sire on Facebook they weighed a ton and could hurt someone's back their response " LOL. Get a better strap " I will never buy one based on that interaction.
Ha, that is a lame answer. As for the weight, I feel them lighter than the Fenders. The only one the is a bit heavier is the P10. So far I owned V7-5 Swamp Ash (heavier than regular ash version) but lighter than Fender's Ultra or Elite (Active also) with swamp ash, even lighter , about same as passive Swamp Ash American Pro V, then the P7, 1st Generation, very light compared to a Fender active P Bass. Then I has a an Alder V7'5 String, I'd say that was heavier than expected, but about same as Fender Active 5, maybe a bit lighter. I also have a V5 (4string) that is just perfect. Just liek the American Pro 4 String I had. So I don't think they are heavy compared to Fender - but I noticed they are not balanced as well. So they pull the neck down a bit more. You feel that when playing. But yeah, a heavy Fender V weighs more than a heavy Sire V. Not talking about V10/P10 because they are boutique basses.
Bit unfair you're comparing the vintage V-7 to an American Jazz.
I think if you played the 10dx V beside the american, the Sire would blow the American Jazz away.
I have the P10 as you may have seen from my channel... very good . Even a V7 is on par with an American Deluxe/Elite sound wise. To match a 10 series, you would need the latest Ultra, but even there I;d probably prefer the V/P/10.
The first reason I don’t buy sire bass is the poor tone......squire do the better job copy the Fender JB sounds. The second reason is the ugly headstock...

I tried talking to a female bassist from another band (she was attractive) and when I mentioned that I used a Squier, she be like “eww! Gross! Get outta here, ya hobo!”
But then I said, “did I say Squier? I meant Sire.” And she be like, “oh please, do go on. I’m listening 😏”
I can’t think of one reason every bassist wouldn’t own a sire. I love my Fender an Music Man basses, but Sire are just as good.

well, it' s the cons that people mention when talking about Sire. I think they have some validity to them. That's why i put a question mark in the thumbnail, and try to answer that question. You are right though, I am personally in favor of them - so I wouldn't say this is scientifically objective.

I was going to just talk about why people say don't buy Sire basses, and then explain why these are not really bad things. Then I was thinking, wait - let me add what I really like about them. In between that I got too excited, and must have started breathing heavily and added mouth clicks! :)
Fenders are hyped crap anyway.
Most fugly head stock ever......both friends I know with Sires both have very temperature sensitive necks, truss rods forever need tweaking😕

So you’re comparing a £500 bass with another one that costs the double... also, you think fender “is the real thing”.... there are many brands that make jazz an precios basses mate... fender is real thing, but other brands developed their own thing and that’s why we have many of cool options when we’re getting a new bass.... very silly comparison just based in your personal opinion about a musical instrument, so next time please PLAY THE BLOODY INSTRUMENT.
I play them all the time Live, in the Studio and here on CZcams (got a couple of compare videos). This was merely comparing what people are saying/believing about why they don't like Sire. And yes you can compare a $800 Sire with a $1700 Fender. Easily! I just use them for different things.

I looked at there company website and I get a "woke" vibe. It makes me instantly go back to fender or music man.
I liked it - simple, with enough manufacturing details and features listed to make sense. Less drama than Fender. But who knows, hard to tell who is behind these companies these days, Fender, MM or otherwise,.

Neither a fender nor sire player. But if u want to choose save more and buy fender. Sire won’t hold its value. Sires sound is not meaty enough. It’s a wannabe fender. The design is exactly the same. Go always with the original
Teh new Fender Pro II and Ultra expensive basses are pretty clean and sterile to me. Th Sire V5, P10 and V10 have more character because of roasted necks. But V10 and P10 are already 2 or 3 times more expensive than regular Sires. It really depend son the model, and what year your Fender is.
@@massivebeatzz that’s a good point. At the end of the day you get what you pay for these days. One is not better than the other. They have different sounds and characteristics. Every mass manufactures instrument has its own grades as well.
