  • Mini Baker Street - Underground station
    Video V.82
    Featured in this video we look at the underground section underneath the main layout, including an addition of new underground station themed on Baker Street Station.
    I also cover the track lighting effect ‘rail spark’ and how to implement this to a layout.
    Components can be found from any online electrical components suppliers or through Amazon /eBay.
    * Reed switch - small
    * magnets - small variety.
    * LED - smaller the better
    * 3V AA battery pack with slide on / off switch.
    Spark Method
    Components ideally need to be rated to the power you intend to feed.
    I opted for 3-5 volts supply - so made sure my components will take a feed up to 12v
    For every spark effect added these can all be fed to one battery pack as a main supply using a BUS wire feed to all, as the flash hardy uses any volts as each flash will illuminates when activated - giving a lots of battery life with these effects.
    My videos are purely entertainment and led to inspire those wishing to be creative giving tips and ideas whilst sharing my passion for model railways.

    Wow and wow ! That really is outstanding. Never have i seen that spark effekt before. I imagine it also could be used on overhead wire, often seen during cold days when elektric locos pass by. So then you only need that smell of the tube and a fan that Blows that strong wind just before the train arrives at the platform...FAB ! Sir ! And a good easter to you !

    YES!! As a NYCTA (New York City Transit Authority) modeller in both HO and O-scale (I do have one set of the Bachmann London Underground S-Stock also), I'm a certified subway enthusiast having grown up in New York City and riding the subway system there since age eight, I was happy to know that you were adding an underground 'shuttle' to your layout three months ago and I see that it's coming along quite nicely indeed. The "arcing" is a must for any subway layout and I will also include it on my NYC subway layout when it's built. Much inspiration Garry, thanks! Be well and be safe.

    That looks fantastic Garry, certainly takes me right back to the underground of the late 70's and early 80's - long before all of the modernisation took place on the underground. And the flashing of the pick up shoes adds so much to it. It's the little things like that which really makes your models stand out. Yep, this is a great addition to the railway shed. You certainly have every right to feel proud about it, it's turned out really well.

    @platformten5958 Před 3 lety +1

    To the author.
    A tremendous example of modelling by you. However, Baker Street station does not have red bricks as a backdrop to its platform. Instead, it has cream coloured tiles. Also, overground trains do not run along that route so you need to purchase a couple of underground rakes from EFE. They may be expensive but, after correcting the station decor, they would be a fitting finale to the project!

    • @cheekytek
      @cheekytek  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you for the compliment Paul,
      The brick work would in reality be a touch more cream, and yes I do agree with you on that as I had mentioned.
      In my memories from the 80's the station had a less modern twist in its time than today so the decor was bland and grubby -looking at my pictures etc, and the BR overground was just my representation as you understand.
      Personally the A38 EFE stock which is overpriced in my opinion would not be to scale to the Baker Street feel that I wanted to create, as the station caters more so for overground sub stock..
      Plus, I certainly don't receive any salary through youtube to fund my hobby.. lol
      It's just a memory palace that stimulates my mental health..
      But all said, that would bring it to life most definitely....
      So If you can fix it for Westminster City to fund my hobby. lol - then I will happily add another 10 rooms to build London's historic underground stations.. lol
      What a layout that would be lol..
      I will wait for my cheque in the post from Boris.. LOL
      Many thanks again Paul very appreciated thoughts..
      Look after yourself and keep safe.
      All the very best Garry

    • @platformten5958
      @platformten5958 Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Garry.
      Thanks for your very informative response. Yes, I take on board the fact that the scenario was designed to suit your desires. Unfortunately, I'm one of these irritating people who expect layouts to represent the prototype as being a fan of GWR, my diorama and rolling stock have to be 'just so'. However, after looking at other modeller's layouts on CZcams, I'm starting to change direction in that respect, and probably not before time.
      Yes, EFE's tube rakes are very expensive, so I don't blame you for giving them a miss. I used to work up London for a few years in the late 60s and early 70s, so I remember the old LT carriages that had a clerestory type roof. I used to travel on the District Line from Wimbledon Park onwards, and the rolling stock was certainly larger than that on, say, the Metropolitan Line which, incidentally, has a couple of its old rakes running around the Isle of Wight. I remember Baker Street as that was the station to alight at when you visited Madame Tussauds waxworks museum (don't know if it's still there) and the London Planetarium.
      Now, about that sponsorship you need. Remember recently the old soldier who walked around his garden to raise a vast amount of money for the NHS? Well, how about walking the streets following the route of ALL the underground stations and raising the necessary cash by dressing up in old soldier's clothing. You'd be surprised at how much fitter you'd be at the end of it assuming, of course, you don't collapse from a heart attack in the meantime. Just a thought (chuckle)!
      Do take care and don't lose that desire to be creative as we need people like you to encourage the youngsters of today to get off their backsides and swap their Playstations for a model railway starter set.
      All the best,
      Paul, a new fan of your channel!

    • @cheekytek
      @cheekytek  Před 3 lety

      Many Thank.
      I did look at this idea - but in my opinion it dose have its failures for two main reasons.
      Firstly - its the track infrastructure that arcs as the train crosses rails to power pickups that touch the third rail making that arc as we see.
      in most cases this is used as a power surge to identify the train in it route location for signals.
      Secondly - adding a reed switch to a train is not the best practice as it potentially ruins the body or chassis -plus being Glass they are prone to damaging very easily if knocked.
      You can use any loco with ease by just adding magnets to the chassis as the infrastructure is in the track.
      Great sugestion and a valued question.
      Hope this helps..
      Keep safe and look after yourself.

      Hi Michael, all the dimensions for the layout are covered in this video -
      czcams.com/video/n86-fRkhhhU/video.html
      This should help...
      In some places yeah they are laid to length but once I move the whole layout soon it will have to be cut across the rails - but I would expect to re-track the layout at that stage one its relocated as I want to remove two points, that rarely get used..
      Many Thanks - All the best Garry

    Do like the underground im planning on a lot of scratch build projects when I build the new layout. One question im planning on using the Reed switches on for a level crossing ..do u know if u can paint over them. Ie for the track weathering as I want to fit all my stuff like that before I ballast and weather

      Many thanks for you comment - absolutely yes I have used black enamels on them many times and have this time too- because its the magnet that creates the contact it has no problems activating through paint 👍 -

    Lovely job Gary. Used to know baker Street very well, upstairs and down stairs. Can I ask how you made the station names on the benches? I had a go on my computer but it did not print very clearly when reduced down. Any pointers?

    Hi Garry great video - I actually bought 12 reed switches of the wrong type 2 years ago and have never used them - thanks to you I now have a project. I am a great fan of reed switches and use the other type for coach lighting really good but not so practical in Bachmann coaches (MK1) since getting them apart is not the easiest of tasks. One practical question on your layout - what is the distance between the rail bed of the fiddle yard (Baker street) and the bottom of the higher level base board supporting your main track? It looks about 15cm but would appreciate it if you could confirm. Thanks

      Hi John
      Many Thanks for your comment and glad to hear those reed switched may have new life lol..
      Yes spot on the distance between the top inside to the track bed base is 15cm this is as much as I could allow at this point..
      All though I do have to confess that the track ramp elevating into that underground section was compromised to 7CM at first but was not practical having a station at that point so I had to make it 15cm as you pointed out.. A good eye you have their lol..
      All the best Garry

    Definitely looks like Baker Street to me! How many times have I been down those stairs over the years going from the westbound Circle Line to northbound Met Line platforms!?
