The reason a 54lb Watersnake only goes 1 or 2 kph faster than a smaller (small) motor is that you cant readily push a displacement hull past it's "hull speed"....adding more power just makes it plough. Yes if you add enough it will eventually plane and escape it's hull speed constraint by getting on top of the water...but in general going from 34-54-80lb will only make it plough a little tiny bit faster. Hull speed is a function of waterline length and other things...basically the longer the hull is the higher its inherent hull speed is, so increasing power is more useful on longer hulls...but once you reach that hull speed you will plough until you plane. It's a bit like the aeronautical engineering saying that a brick shithouse will fly if you give it enough thrust. I want to see a planing kayak....but 80 wont do it.
@@Bosley22678 Yeah... I have a 54 Venom myself on my tinny and I am thinking of cutting it down to 26" and fitting it to my coming Feelfree 11.5. I dont know that there are any prop options. We would probably need a larger diameter rather than higher pitch and I doubt if it can be found..? Maybe the bigger Venoms have a bigger prop I dont know.
Did you shorten the shaft or is is stock? Just purchased the same motor today so was just wondering if I need to modify it once it arrives. Well done with your mount as well. Looks great!!
The battery is behind the seat and the mount is custom. I have a video on the electric motor mount on my channel. I was hoping to do a video on the full setup up today but didn't get around to it. Soon.
Very useful video, congratulation, perhaps, what is the motor weights? I tried to use a minn Kota endura 30, but I feel is quite heavy, finally, how long can you stay on the water using this motor and the battery you uses? Cheers from Mexico!
Thanks. The 54lb is a heavy motor but not to bad because the kayak is big and stable. I use a 50amh battery and from fully charge on speed 2 for 4 hours the battery goes down to 11.5v.
@@patrickmurphy9266 sorry for the late reply. Haven't test how long yet, it's been hard to get out with everything going on. Hope to do some sort of test soon.
Never had problems with the weight of the trolling motor to one side or the battery in the back? I have an Ultimate FX 12 I'm going to throw an electric motor on for my bigger fishing days on big lakes. I'm looking at some 80 pound thrust motors to get me to places quicker.
80 lb will get you there quick. There is a little bit of weight to the watersnake and I thought all that weight on one side might make a difference but it's not to bad. Evening out the weight with the electric and the battery helps.
Bigger electric trolling motors won't give you allot more speed but will eat your batteries faster ( You'll need at least two batteries for an 80#) . THese motors are designed to push a boat slow. THe hull of the kayak is only designed to go 6-7 MPH . FWIW, I have a 40# electric on a canoe and it goes as fast as the boat allows. I can get a full 6 hr day of fishing out of a wheelchair/golfcart sized battery. hth
Hi Curado, I just purchased a watersnake advanced brushless 70lb thrust motor for my wilderness systems Thresher140 as an upgrade for my watersnake 24T, but it was way to heavy at 12kg. I think I might opt for this venom 54lb thrust version instead. I've looked everywhere on the internet for the weight of it, but had no success. Is there any chance you could weigh yours and let me know? Thanks for any help you can give. Cadders
I'm using a 110Ah leisure battery so I'll probably use it like you said and offset the weight of the motor a bit. The trouble is it can get a little choppy where I fish and I don't want to be carrying more weight than I need....I was also looking at the Venom 34lb, as it looks lighter still. The trouble is there is nowhere to get the weights of these motors. Thanks Curado
The motor weight is about 9kg to 9.5kg, my scales aren't the best. A 110amh is a big battery for a kayak. You haven't thought of something a bit smaller to cut the weight down? I'm using a 50amh and can get a days fishing from it.
Thanks for that Curado. That's really put the cat amongst the pigeons, I don't know what to do now. I feared it might be that heavy. I don't know how much lighter the Venom 34lb will be, but that might be my only option. I would be worried about dropping down in battery size as my motor is always on for regular 6 hour trips. Thanks for all your help Curado.
The shaft is 600mm long. The watersnake is one for kayaks and dinghys. Haven't tested out how much I get out of a battery yet but would guess 5 to 6 hours depending how hard it's working.
@@Bosley22678 that would be awesome! I just picked up an ultimate 12 and am looking to add a trolling motor. Mine wouldn't be a water snake though. Would that matter?? Or does that mount work a Minn Kota as well?
It was a test because it was the first time I had tried it before I would use it while fishing. I used a GPS to record the speeds and if you had watched at the end I talked about the speed I was getting. This test was about more how the kayak handled with the electric motor. That looks like a nice setup! I like having the motor right next to me than in the back. Thanks for posting!! Cheers from the USA in Connecticut!
Thanks mate. Top speed was about 7kph. I reckon it would go quicker with a better prop.

I have the same homework - what was your result?
I've been using this motor on my 12 foot punt and would love to try it on a kayak.
Thanks for the video. How long is shaft? What kind of battery do you use for the motor?
Awesome
Hello thanks for the video , what battery range does it have ?
Where was this filmed? The nature sounds are so peaceful!

This doesn't get anywhere near getting on the plan but a bigger prop would help get more speed. The prop on the watersnake is small for a 54lb motor.

Would be nice for a bigger size prop. Looked in to it with no luck. Minn kota has such a bigger prop to the watersnake.
@@Bosley22678 it won't make much difference like the guy above mentioned, you are limited buy length at waterline... Physics.
In that case, what is the most powerful 'affordable' electric trolling motor? I want to attach it to an Intex Seahawk 2...

Thanks. The motor hasn't been modified. The watersnakes are suited well for kayaks.

Couldn't see why not if there was a transom to mount it to.
How’s your electric motor going now that you e had it for a fair while ?
Hi i like your video im wanting to know what size battery are you using for your engine and what type thanks

How long will it run if you run continuously on high speed and how many amp hour is your battery?
I did do a test where I ran the motor on speed 2 and it ran for 5 hours on a 50amh battery. The motor still ran but the volts was about 11.5v.
Will it fit on my SUP : )
Does mounting it on the side make it turn slightly?
It does slightly but you counteract it with your steering.
