Sooo... We may have said too much. TOO MUCH?! Naahhhh... Never!
But Eric and Hannah DID reveal a BUNCH of cool stuff during their talk at Mysterium 2023 a couple weeks ago, so we wanted to re-publish their talk in case you weren't able to make it... Or you wanted to give it a re-watch to see that cool thing they showed off for the very first time ever. Shhh... Don't tell anyone.
Who are we kidding?! We're excited and we're exited that YOU are excited! Tell your friends! Make 'em watch this talk. Be amazed!
Much love from all of us at Cyan!

I am so happy that Cyan is still around and that they are working on these projects. I'm here for the new and old and remade : )
I don't know how often you guys read the CZcams comments, but the idea of more games in the Myst/D'Ni universe is what I've been wanting for decades. I do like your new games, but you've laid such a strong groundwork with the Myst franchise you should DEFINITELY be utilizing it more. Super excited!!!
Riven is such a childhood memory. I remember playing it on the first iMac and my (late) dad passing by and curious about what I was doing. At first, he didn't believe it was "made with computers", he said those much be actual photos. It started my love and interest for 3d design and rendering. About 3 years ago I bought Riven on Steam and started playing. It totally sucked me in again. I finished it within two days. When I finished it, I completely broke down in tears. All the memories of my family and the magic and wonder we felt playing this game together. Thank you Cyan for creating this absolute masterpiece, that lead to such beautiful memories. 😢
This made me so happy. Riven remains to this day one of my favorite games of all time, and I'm so excited to see what your vision is for the remake.
Big shout out to The Starry Expanse team.
I was so happy when I learned Cyan and TSE were officially collaborating - been following both since the beginning.
They way the audience was SO EXCITED at climbing down the ladder lol, this all looks great and I'm so stoked!
Riven melted my mind back in the day. The visual quality update over Myst was staggering. The world felt so much more real and lived in. Still one of my favorites of the series. The story was compelling as well. The updated format looks awesome and I can't wait to explore these worlds again.
Riven gobsmacked me back in the day - especially the monorail ride between CDs! Amazing. The world was so atmospheric, that music was so wonderful. Can’t wait for the new version. 🙂 Thank you for doing this to all at Cyan 💜
It had such an amazing feeling.
Riven looks EXACTLY how I hoped it would, love it.
Cyan created Firmament, we're still living there... and will leave for Paradise, I mean... Riven !!
Riven looks incredible.
Riven is my favorite game of all time, thank you so much for all the work towards continuing the legacy!
I LOVED Firmament. I want to LIVE THERE. My only let-downs were that it wasn't long enough and, maybe just me, but I thought it was a bit too easy. I was expecting another Obduction--another place I want to move to!
it was soooo easy! Yeah the puzzles were a bit disappointing. And I thought wasn't as mysterious as some of the linking book worlds were, but they did do a great job otherwise
Skip to 42:14 for the Riven Demo!
I love how honest the presenters are and that they have a sense of humor about the community's expectations
I will never stop to say how much I love you guys. My love for adventure games started in 1989 with Indy 3, and then grew to an all new level with Riven in 1997 (yes, I played Riven before Myst and discovered about the saga with the second episode, that for me is still today an absolute masterpiece). And adventure games, and Myst saga in particular, were so fundamental in my life and personal growth that I'll be forever grateful for your existence and your games! Much love from Italy! ;)
I have dreamt of this version of Riven since I was a kid twenty five years ago
I played VR Firmament immediately on release and I loved the world you crafted. Thank you and keep up the amazing work!!
Please please please please have vr support for riven - it would be a childhood dream come true
For the record, Myst III was my favorite. Best soundtrack, too, by far. I actually just listen to it sometimes, even to this day. It was the formula perfected, without any of the issues that 4 and 5 had.
I'm so excited to be able to play Riven in HD and without CD swapping.
I am so pump to get into some new D'ni content! I also am thrilled for Riven to come!
To this day Riven is my #1 favorite game of all time. No fictional world has ever felt as immersive and real to me as this. Hugely excited to see that after 30 years you are still so dedicated to thi s wonderful series.
hardcore gamer here, played just about every genre. i remember myst like it was yesterday. i've played every single one of your games, every one. i've just got firmament dnloaded and played 10 minutes of it so far. am gonna save it for later to play. hands down bar none, the riven and myst stuff are my favorite games to play, very fond memories. ty guys
I'm a long time cyan worlds fan, played myst/riven as a kid and I backed obduction/firmament. I really love all the work you guys do and am very excited for riven again and more d'ni verse.
It's weird, I don't have much history with Myst (played it once literal decades ago basically just mimicking an FAQ, not following the plot or lore in the least because I was a very dumb teenager at the time) but I ended up on this video in a very modern, algorithmic way (those Riven bloopers are paying off because I'm definetly interested in Firmament now), but for some reason it does my heart genuine good to know that somewhere out there, there's a room full of people who care this much about Myst and everything surrounding it. It just does.
I first played Riven some 10 years ago and what was clearly evident was how ambitious this game was, it is the most impressive game I've ever played. The low resolution and dated visuals didn't hold back the amazing world design and atmosphere. The music, the sounds, the actors and the story was so unique and interesting. Gehn was great. Incredibly excited for this!
The new Riven looks absolutely gorgeous! I've always wanted to be able to see more of the world past the static screens, and in higher quality. To this day it's still my favourite game/world ever. I will likely spend hours just walking around from island to island. No idea what changes or additions will be in place, but I'm excited.
Thank You CYAN for all that you do... never disappointed, always amazed
New Riven is looking awesome guys, great job!
SO mad! I lived just miles from headquarters...just waiting fir them to hold Mysterium there. When they finally do it's just months after I have to relocate. 🥺 Still supporting and enjoying! Thanks to all who put their heart and soul into keeping all that is Myst alive!
So happy to see and hear this presentation…thanks to everyone who made it possible!!!
That Riven music gives me goosebumps every time.
12:40 Hey now... I actually sat down with Firmament and played it through as I had with every title since playing original Myst on CDROM. It is, unfortunately, the last Cyan title I would ever replay again. I appreciate the effort, but it just didn't deliver the way other Cyan titles have. I would definitely play a Riven remake for sure. Riven is my favorite of the entire Myst series.
Thank you Cyan! I loved everything you do. Immersive worlds that I can revisit for years. I'm so excited for RIVEN.
Obduction was amazing!
Riven was my introduction to Myst. I remember not really being a huge fan of it at first, outside of being able to push buttons. It took a few years, but it's definitely one of my top favorite games now.
I'd love to see a day/night cycle for this.
This is awesome stuff guys! I can't wait to enter to the 3D version of Riven with such a authentic look 👌☕
The aesthetics of Riven are absolutely incredible.
Any plans for Riven VR?
Amazing work guys! Can't wait!
It's great to hear URU getting a mention.
This is going to be insane!!! Can't wait...!
Love this community!
I am so incredibly excited for Riven. I still come across scraps of paper and notebooks with scribblings of the puzzles from when I played it as a kid. I cannot wait!
I still have my Riven for Mac CDs purchased in 1998 somewhere in the house.
I've been playing Cyan games since original 1993 Myst. Riven has been my favorite ever since it came out, so I'm really looking forward to the remake! I'm also glad to hear that there will probably be side projects in the Myst universe later on as well because there are so many interesting bits of lore already and I am excited to explore it even more! I also really like the idea of doing some more indy/experimental games. Honestly, those tend to be the ones I enjoy most these days. Big blockbuster studio games are not very interesting to me in most cases (though there are always exceptions of course). I haven't finished Firmament yet as I did run into a rather annoying bug that broke my autosave shortly after it released, but I was enjoying it until that point. I'll revisit it again soon.
My first Cyan game was Riven. I was 4 (yeah, I know. Thats crazy), I loved it and busted my head to figure out the puzzels.
Been love with Myst series since.
You could not choose better music for FIRMAMENT, which btw is an amazing game !!!. Looking forward to new RIVEN. (BTW I backed all your projects and now looking forward to new ones).
The Firmament trailer gave me chills, what a rich-looking world. Feels like it shares some spiritual heritage with Bioshock too.
WAIT it's RELEASED ALREADY
ah I have been studying so hard lately. Wowww looking forward to playing this after I finish my studies!
Firmament was great; can't wait to play Riven!!!
Yes add more to the lore of myst. Riven looks amazing!!! Cannot wait for it!
Id be so stoked for a Myst 3 remake!!! after Riven
Incredible.
Riven was always my favorite part of the Myst franchise and I was hoping for a remake. I'll buy this in a heartbeat! 😍
As an Australian, "Dunnyverse" is the most hilarious thing I've ever heard! 😂😂😂
Riven looks beautiful already! I can't wait to see the final product, especially the sunners and the wahrks
I remember when i was 10 and my mom showed me Riven for the first time, we had the book that went with it too. Excited for Cyan!!
The Riven music started and all the hairs on my arm shot straight up
*extremely* stoked for the Riven remake
Wish there were events here in Australia. A very enthusiastic and passionate crowd. Speaks to how meaningful games are in people's lives.
If Cyan were to branch out - there are some excellent examples of narrative adventure titles on PC in similar scope to "What Remain of Eden Finch" which set a precedent for narrative storytelling.
I have only a handful of games which I view to be masterpieces. Cyans work is within these.
Also exceptional -
What Remains of Eden Finch- PC
Martha is Dead - PC- Some of the richest environments even seen in a video game to date.
Syberia World Before- PC Microids Studio coming into their own with this landmark title in memory of B Sokal.
All outstanding examples of gaming at its very best !
So excited by the Riven demo, it looks amazing. Keep up the great work. Riven was my first ever video game my dad bought me when I was 10. It’s always has a special place in my heart. ❤
I'm super opposed to pre-ordering any games nowadays, but I'll make a huge exception for Riven if it has a pre-order. So excited for it!!!
Perfect. S masterpiece already
Omg I want more Myst/Riven games!!! How exciting
Thanks so much! We're excited, too. You can wishlist the new Riven now! bit.ly/RivenSteam or bit.ly/RivenGOG
I mean the Riven demo is EXACTLY how I remember the space
Nice to set the building visible as a clue up there, good way to keep the door trick present
Looks great because it looks the same, but better.
Wow...Riven looks awesome visually. I don't know what the approach will be for the characters, so I hope they end up looking equally good.
Been dreaming about a Riven remake for years, can't wait!!!
Lmao that crowd is going nuts, love the energy
As someone that played the original Myst a lot on the Atari Jaguar (wish it'd had a mouse), but never really played Riven (played the first few minutes on a friends PC), I will definitely be holding off playing it til the remake is out!
RealRiven at last! Amazing stuff. Brilliant news Richard is back for Riven and really see such a bright future with the ideas and energy Cyan has. Now back to playing Firmament
Wooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Riven!!! YES!
I meant infuriatingly frustrating puzzles.
But it's all good ,you guys are awesome!
Cant wait to play/buy Riven in VR! Best game i ever played and was blown away at that time by the graphics and gameplay and adventure! Such a great childhood memory………… Thanks Cyan! Goodluck with programming
20:05 Myst 3 was absolutely amazing, I must give credit where credit is due!
For what it's worth I'd love to see you try another Firmament game. The game had ups and downs, but I think you were on the cusp of something pretty revolutionary with the adjunct and having metroidvania elements in an adventure game. I'm sure you learned a lot, and I want to see that evolution someday. Some of the visuals were absolutely stunning, too, like the Swan, the spires, and when you finally go outside the realms. Really gorgeous stuff.
Cyan got me started in pc gaming, thanks
Cyan for your awesome awesome games!
Also the puzzles are sometimes infuriating
Lol.
The footage of the Riven remake is surreal to watch. My brain insists that's exactly the same game I played as a kid somehow! I spent so long in the world that I have a mental map of the space as if it were full 3D, and now it actually will be. Hope development goes smoothly; I'm so excited to play it!
I was disappointed by the shortness of firmament but the riven remake gives me hope
i am inspired by the visual quality and style of firmament though 🙂
Being there for this was an absolute blast. What a wonderful time.
I am a huge Myst and Riven fan and I love them, but obduction is really for me your best game so far (maybe because riven is not up to date :D) but I would love to see an "obduction 2" getting back into that universe would be very awesome
A suggestion: What I would love is that Cyan would develope a VR game in the style of 'Quern - undying thoughts' which reminds me of Cyan's masterpiece Myst.
Super excited for the Riven remake, and to see what comes next after! Smaller games that are more experimental, but still connected to Myst lore sounds really awesome.
I really like their approach at 26:00. Make more small games, see how the public responds, and then use that as a compass for where you want to go next for the next big release. Great thinking!
Same! I'd far prefer more frequent smaller games they can try new things with and really enjoy making, versus huge infrequent games that take years and so much grueling effort. Like they said, they ARE an indie studio after all, so why not make more indie-style games?
I enjoyed Firmament, but I played it in VR with a 3080TI and i7 9700k, 32 GB of ram but it ran very poorly in VR with reprojection and choppiness (very low fps) in certain areas. I hope there are more performance tweaks in the future for VR because all my friends have had the same problems.
God, what I wouldn't give to work on their expanded Riven lore.
RIVEN is Jawdropping !!!!!
Haven't played Firmament yet, but regardless of what I ultimately feel about the game, I DO feel that moving toward - and continuing to perfect - VR is the right direction for Cyan's future projects.
Cyan's always been about immersing players in its worlds above everything, trying to make us feel like the worlds are somehow real and we're actually there. And nothing can do that quite like VR can.
So even *if* Firmament is a bust, I'd likely just consider it a launching platform and tech demo for things to come.
I hope to be able to make it to one of these conventions
Sadly the audio background noise is so bad, that it really inpacts the viewer experience.
For the future you guys may want to check the audio setup beforehand.
With tools like Pedalboard2 and a few minutes of setting it up, this whole issue could've been solved.
There was made mention during the talk of peripherals such as books, etc. How about doing a graphic novel of Firmament? I watched my daughter play the game...it was really fun seeing her go through it. and am puzzled by the backstory. Or rather, would like to know the backstory. I think a graphic novel showing what happened before Turner would be very interesting and welcomed.
This world of RIVEN is one of my favorite to exist in video games
I grew up playing Myst in the early 2000's and never was able to finish Riven, but have revisited it from time to time. When I heard about the Starry Expanse Project in 2018, I decided to hold off on finishing Riven; I think I'm only halfway done. I doubled down on this when I played Myst in VR for the first time three years ago. In the meantime I've been playing Firmament and other games. Have I made the right decision, anyone else in the comments? To hold off on finishing classical Riven in anticipation of the remake? I wasn't there, so I couldn't ask this in the Q&A.
I would really love of the new riven if you could exchange on Tay. When I was in that jail cell looking out the window at the tree and the village I wanted to go explore that so bad! I really hope there's a little more exploration of Tay this time if there's room for expansion.
Dear god my body is ready for Riven.
This game was fundamental to me growing up and set the bar for world-building, creating atmosphere and a real sense of place.
Easiest day one purchase of my life.
I'm excited about the implications of the Myst linking book currently present in Obduction! In a future version of the game will it link to the version of Myst that we know or to a time before the library fire? If before, there are probably some Ages that cold be visited... maybe something that loosely ties back to the other cyan games...
I hope Riven comes to Quest 3. I’ve loved playing Myst on there
riven looks amazing. wow. i pray they somehow don't ruin it with 3d modeled characters. i have no idea what options they have, but that wouldn't work. just like myst was awful with them. i'd rather them somehow fit the FMV actors in there, but i know those videos are probably so low res. unless they have the actual video recordings from back then?
Riven looks exactly like those old SoftImage renders created on expensive Silicon Graphics workstations. Impressive work, Cyan! And how far we have come in terms of technology…
