- One of my favorite live recordings of Rigoletto: 29 December 1945 Met broadcast - conducted by Cesare Sodero. Leonard Warren, Jussi Björling, and Bidu Sayao all in their vocal primes.
The Duke's entrance and aria from Act 1, his duet with the Countess, and Rigoletto's entrance.

Bjorling was Swedish - sang in beautiful Italian. Today 9/9/2020 is the 60th anniversary of his death on Sept 9, 1960. He was a favorite on the Voice of Firestone.

I have in complete preformances the other is Pavarotti. From highlights Caruso was probably the best of anyone..
In my opinion Jan Kiepura was the best in this role. He had so sunny voice!
Bjorling's compatriot in the non -Italian wing at the Met. at the time, Jan Peerce, also gives an outstanding performance in another Leonard Warren Rigoletto on record. This is the 1950 recording conducted by Cellini, with the brilliant Erna Berger as Gilda. This was the first ever recording of a complete opera made by RCA on the then new LP format.

Thanks and kudos to meltzerboy for the wonderful entry, wow, now 3 years ago. I too am hooked on his phrasing and the way he could bend the melodic line in such fresh and beautiful ways, always true to the music itself.

I tre tenori piu' popolari nel mondo a livello mediatico sono stati Caruso Gigli e Pavarotti, anche se Bjorling Gigli e Caruso sono stati di gran lunga migliori di Pavarotti.

....if we like it or not, JB was one of those voices never to reappear again. We are lucky to have his records. Today is mediocrity or less.

@@mk5244he has very unusual training by Gillis Bratt, who also taught Flagstad. Bratt, himself a throat doctor, gave special exercises which are probably not used anymore.

Bjorling has the tones of both Caruso,and Pavarotti,depending on the particular Opera.But he is a great so was Lanza,and Domingo which I had the honor and pleasure of meeting in 1981,while belonging to the Metropolitan Opera Guild.Since I too am a tenor,I am very partial to tenors also.my coach,Carl S.Olsen told me I am a lyric tenor.But I have some of spinto,too.Mr.Olsen now retired from singing went into the coaching to help singers reach their full potential.God bless.

1 negative comment is one too many. He was the very best...and I know this performance; and Bidu more than rocks it out he park; Warren may be equaled, but never surpassed. Shoot(metaphorically, of course) the one thumbs down!
I too wonder about the one "thumb down". Has he/she listened at all? Jussi Bjørlings voice sends shivers down my spine, there is no one better!
deeply troubled, unique not only his voice, also his artistry, he even adds the laugh into the singing, it is great and adds into that handsome worry free Duke's role.
Sorry Bjorling does not compare to Corelli the greatest spin to tenor of the century

I too am a huge fan of Correli's...dont get me wrong. But there is something about the silky quality of Bjorling's voice that lends itself to the slickness and scheming nature of the Duke. I dont think Correli ever recorded the entire role of the Duke, but I have...on you tube as a matter of fact heard him sing this aria. Stunning yes. Powerful and masculine yes. But I like the snake-charmer quality of Bjorling's tac on the role. Happy listening!
