  • Franco Corelli unfortunately never sang this opera (Rigoletto) but he did record this aria a few times!
    This was his youngest of the recordings (in 1958)

      @MrOperaTenor  Před 3 lety +7

      @John Oregan No problem... I don’t think you have to thank me for just giving him the number 1 spot he undoubtedly deserves... I did change my mind on a few of them since I made that list... I would put Pavarotti at 3rd after Lauri Volpi... Luciano has outstanding technique and technically he has achieved technical heights that even Corelli never had... Corelli’s voice, a lot of it, is a natural gift... a lot of the time you can easily tell that he forces a big note and it comes out loud and great but if other tenors like Pavarotti per say would do the same thing, their voice might get damaged because it naturally isn’t strong or big enough to handle such vocal pressure... it doesn’t mean that Corelli shouldn’t have sung those notes that way.. he did and that’s one of the the multiple reasons why he’s number 1... but just “tecnica vocale” wise, Luciano has no match... he simply artificially made his voice... Lauri Volpi has the 2nd spot because his voice was ringing with a lot of silver in it and which is most important - it was effortless... nothing like Corelli’s stance when he was singing high notes or like Pavarotti who would take a huge breath with his diaphragm... lauri Volpi is a big reason Corelli is number 1... before Lauri Volpi, Corelli didn’t have the technique he ultimately became number 1 with...
      P.S.
      I know what I’m talking about... I train everyday (except weekends)... I’m going to be an Opera tenor soon (just 24yr old). One day... I’ll be on that list of top 10 tenors... mark my words...

    Corelli's sound is always unusually masculine for a tenor - and it gives him an always powerful presence. This is a quality than can not be reduced to merely speaking in terms of loud or soft, light or heavy, lyrical or heroic, but rather something that is intrinsic to the man, Corelli, himself, and it sets him apart from most other male vocalists in such a way that after only a note or two, you always know it is he...the great Corelli...

    I would love to hear Corelli on a complete Rigoletto recording, if only in the studio. He would be a perfect Duca, despite the role being very lyrical, because he had a voice that transitioned very well between romantic and jovial; and the dark and hard. It was very versatile, that's why he sang both La Bohème and Il Trovatore well.

They can do it occasionally but not on a permanent basis. Corelli cannot just lose some "baggage", his voice simply had a lot of weight. It is similar to a lyric tenor who tries sings too much heavy repertoire, it degrades the voice to sing outside of your fach. For a spinto tenor who frequently performed dramatic roles, Il Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto, which is sometimes sung by leggero tenor such as Juan Diego Florez, was not the role that Corelli would choose. But the way he sang this aria is also satisfied to hear. There are two other recordings of "Questa o Quella" from Corelli's concerts in München with Deutsches Museum (December 13th 1970) and in Tokyo (November 8th 1971).

Among all the great gifts Corelli possessed as a singer especially in the early days of his career he could surprise you by singing something real lyric with a lot of conviction and beauty; for example perhaps "A TE O CARA from Ipuritani by Bellini. Corelli is one of my favorites, and I don't like to critique why I think he would not be suited for any role, because then I would have to mention some flaws in his musicality as well as habits. But all in all, a great tenor.

      +Super OperaTenor Corelli also never sang Butterfly, Ballo, Traviata , Rigoletto and Manon Lescaut.Perhaps it was because he started a little late with his career, around age 30.The real mystery for me is Manon Lescaut. I know he had mentioned that it was a very difficult role, but I think his voice was perfect for the opera. He was really relieved when he retired, as he suffered from terrible stage fright. Imo, he should of at least recorded Otello, but he didn't. There was talk that MDM was encouraging FC to do the role, but I don't know how accurate it is.

      @@marcgiardina4043 Kaufman’s sound is deceptive. He sounds like he has a big voice because it is dark, but there is no real power or weight behind it. The voices that are really the biggest on stage have a lot of squillo, Corelli and Del Monaco had loads of squillo. Kaufman has no squillo. You would actually struggle to hear him without a microphone. Kaufman is one of the better tenors these days, but his technique is not that good against the earlier generation. Corelli and Del Monaco would sing right over him.
