Franco Corelli's interpretation is very inspired, but to say it's the best you should first hear Beniamino Gigli's, and then judge. I think you would have some second thoughts

To me, the "Ave Maria" is the most touching piece of music that what ever composed. And when interpreted by a voice like that of Corelli in his prime, it is capable of turning your inside out as if you were a garment of cloth. And it leaves you bare and open to the world like a gaping wound. It makes you aware that music is the most precious achievement of mankind ever to be made.... INCREDIBILE ! He had a very unique timbre and did a lot technically right, but also had numerous technical faults. He wasn’t a complete technique/voice, so he’s partly lucky he had a massive frame with powerful lungs and a naturally virile timbre to aid in providing an electrifying vocal line with ease. He was no Gigli or Caruso but he knew that himself. Overall a great artist
