    Exploring the ECU hardware and testing - part 2
    This video explains the ECU circuit board and demonstrates the way of crank and cam signal simulation to run the ECU and perform the different testing.
    The engine ECU controls the injection of the fuel to the engine and the timing of the spark to ignite it. It determines the position of the rotation using a Crankshaft Position Sensor so that the injectors and ignition system are activated at precisely the correct time. It uses also number of sensor to read the status of the engine in order to run the engine at optimum performance.
    The subject includes ways to check the ECU and follow the various signals and use the signal generator and an oscilloscope to view the signals, this is explaining step by step methods to trace the signals on the ECU board without circuit diagram.
    The input to the ECU includes the following sensors:
    Crank Position Sensor
    Cam Position Sensor
    Knock Sensor
    Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
    Manifold Absolute Pressure or MAP Sensor
    Mass Air Flow or MAF Sensor
    Oxygen/O2/Lambda Sensor
    Fuel Pressure Sensor
    Engine Speed Sensor
    Throttle Position Sensor
    The output from the ECU includes the following devices:
    Injectors
    Throttle body control
    Ignition coil
    Load relay output
    Malfunction lamp
    Fuel pump
    Idle control

      In terms of scope general purposes scope should be ok for testing the ECU circuit, there are some more sosicated scopes with some special functions particularly to analyze CAN signals but for advance use, if ECU programming is required then some programming devices like KTAG can be used,
      You may need also some means to simulate the signals plus arrangement of harness connection cables, variable resistors and toggle switches, etc.

      @@saudautomation ahhhh, thank you! Interesting...) The mass air sensor read 12v today, not 5v, across all three pins... Coolant temperature sensor was 12v too, not 5v, so I was sure that ECU ground was lost. After checking all grounds, they were all excellent, zero resistance and no voltage drops. Then I found the Ambient intake air sensor and found it was a perfect 5v. This is a bmw E36 that hasn't running 7 years since typhoon Yolanda. It did fire a few times, pop pop pop...turns over well with a bypassed immobilizer coded ecu. Tomorrow I'll pull the injectors and see if they actually inject, lol. From your excellent video and comment now, I'm presuming that not all sensors must use 5v...and 12v is used sometimes. Is that true? Thanks again, it's very interesting. Saud, my project car is running again now, partly thanks to you...) It's a 2000 BMW, sat dead for seven years. Now I want to bypass several modules I don't want or need...I'd rather cut connections inside the ecu than supply fake "signals" instead of the modules, but it might be the only way since I see the main immobilizer connected IC also appears to have a clock, which seems would be for orchestrating ignitor and injector pulses. I'm getting p0600 and p0601 codes now...which have to do with communication with modules...(?) Any advice? Thanks again...)

    • @saudautomation
      @saudautomation  Před 3 lety +1

      Great work I hope you will be able to restore back the car, I know it is complicated as the car was off for several years, p601 may indicate some internal failure with ECU, but in your condition long time car is off verify the 12 volt and ground is OK up to the ECU input, you may need to clean the harness connector and ECU pins especially if ECU is located at engine side.
      Anyhow carry on all the best

    • @saudautomation
      @saudautomation  Před 11 měsíci

      Hello, you are very welcome,
      Good question thanks , and the answer for this going to be long,
      in fact at very beginning when I thought to semulate the signal to run the ECU same question came to my mind, would it genarate output without doing immobilizer off the engine wouldn't run without proper emo transponder code , but I decided to jus go ahead and try if not then later I will deal with deactivate the immobilizer, but surprisingly the ECU just responded directly, to explain this in this situation in fact the ECU is not fully functioning the RPM also is at very low speed the ECU program try to adjust the respond and immobilizer at this stage not being verified yet.

      what kind of information do I need to gather for manufacturing an ECU for ABS ?

    • @saudautomation
      @saudautomation  Před 4 lety +1

      Dear friend,
      It is great to use your knowledge to develop hardware and systems thats the best way to learn and gain experience all the time,
      If you plan to develop your own ABS system keep in mind ABS is critical safety element in the vehicle and safety of human then equipment is priority. Then you need to study the ABS system principles starting from concept of the wheels speed sensors( types and operation) to the ABS control module (hardware and application software), plus the design of hydraulic system and valves control. Also ABS control module needs to communicate to other control modules in the vehicle to exchange information through CAN network.
      All the best
