Garmin Dash Cam Mini Review - 1 Year Follow Up - Does it still overheat?

- A little over a year ago I did a comprehensive review of the Garmin Dash Cam Mini: • Garmin Dash Cam Mini O... Everyone still wants to know if Garmin ever fixed the overheating issue, and the answer is NO, but it's more complicated than that, so I figured I should do a follow-up video to talk about what I've learned in the year that I've been using this dash cam.
The bottom line is that the firmware updates have NOT fixed the overheating, but at least Garmin added an impact-only parking mode (which still overheats). However, over the winter when it was cold it did not overheat at all, but on the first warm 82º day in March it did.
Despite that, the camera works flawlessly as long as Parking Mode is turned off, and for that reason I still recommend this camera. The small size makes up for the lack of a usable parking mode, at least for me. I'd rather have a tiny, invisible dash cam that doesn't have parking mode, than have a big ugly dash cam that does. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Very useful. Unlike many video and product reviews that rate a product prematurely, your video is VERY useful!
Watched both videos now, very useful indeed thanks! Nigel - Northern Ireland.
A great help - many thanks for your review and this update, Brian.
Great couple of reviews. Thank you. Love your Aston Martin too!
Just received this for Christmas! Excited use it. Will not use parking mode. Love your videos. Thank you!
Did they fix parking mode yet?
Thanks for the in-depth review and follow-up.
This video was super helpful. I am currently on the market for one so this helped with what to expect.
Very informative videos on the little Garmin dashcam! Thanks. I’m coming from a Blueskysea B1W but get a new car next month and want to use the opportunity to change to another system. Greetings from Germany
Hi, I’ve watched both reviews and like you, the form factor is my main concern. I can live without parking mode if necessary although if temperature could be a trigger for the malfunction it may not be an issue for me as I live in Ireland 🥶 lol. This is the perfect size and I will definitely purchase one thanks to your excellent reviews. Thanks so much 🙏 Luv the Aston Martin btw 😎
I currently have this camera and it gets hot as the same hell! Nice tip with the turn off of the parking mode. And trust me they know... i have contacted garmin several times about this issue and what they offer is just to change the camera. Thanks for the vids.
Thanks , at least I know what to expect IF I decided to get this ... great review..
Great information. Thank you so much for posting!
So pleased to have watched this video - not going to purchase this one now. We live in a hot climate and I also really want parking mode.
Hi Brian. Thanks for the 👍 review. We just bought dash cam 56, during the set up process. We noticed ours is very hot too, mainly around sd card slot on the bottom plate, because it was too hot to hold very long, I checked with temperature gun, it was 51c or 124f, It’s a bit disappointing (actually dangerous) if they have overheating issue cross the dash cam line up. I have contacted their support too. Will see what they say. Thanks again for sharing with us.
Really nice, thanks for the update
Excellent video my friend!!
Thanks for the tips and the video reviews. I went ahead and purchased the Garmin dashcam mini last week as a basic tool for recording video while driving. Easy install. So far, so good. I am thinking about getting a second one for rear view recording, but from the replies here, it seems the smart phone app is not very unreliable with multiple cameras. That's too bad. However, your suggestion of just removing the MicroSD cards after an incident and downloading the files needed to a laptop or desktop computer seems like a good option for multiple cameras as well. Saving any video files to a smart phone is basically like "backing-up" a video to another source for safe-keeping. But, as you mentioned, it is rather time-consuming and redundant in my opinion, as you will still need to hook up your phone to a computer for proper viewing and editing anyway, and it just takes up storage space on the phone. Also, saved video files are usually much too large to email to yourself or anyone else, so there is no other way to transfer the files wirelessly from your phone. Although it would be nice to easily have a "picture-in-picture" edit of the front and rear views, there are some computer video editing software available that can do the same thing, so it's not a deal breaker for me. Thanks again for the review and follow-up and best regards.
I want this camera so bad because of the size, but the main reason I would want it is for surveillance while my vehicle is parked and I’m not in it
I watched the original video, excellent review. I do not need parking mode to work so this camera is perfect for the size and the price. And it seems the important features work in the app as well.
Thank you Brian, another excellent review and update to your earlier comments, which I have seen. Like yourself, I prefer very small cameras. I have no need for a screen and may not bother to review the content unless I know something was of interest. I only want it in case of an accident. Have you updated the recording card in the mini and do you have a rear view camera, which i was thinking of getting an my new car.,
Huge help!
Nice video. Thanks!
Nice video Brian. Regarding the overheating, I have been looking at a lot of dashcams at the moment and decided on the Road Angel Halo Go. I had looked at the Garman Mini mainly because of its size (I wanted a discreet install) but was put off slightly due to the overheating reported. However, watching the video for the Road angel, they have a "winter mode" for the parking mode. In this mode, the camera does indeed heat up, the purpose is to melt any ice/frost on the windscreen so it can still see out through the windscreen to record any incidents. Just wondering if the mini cam has the same feature somewhere in it's settings? Could be that the camera is heating up due to being on winter mode? This might also tally with what you said about it not malfunctioning during winter/the colde months? Hope this helps. It might be it doesn't have this function but worth looking into ;-)
I’d love to see a review of the mini 2- I wonder if they fixed the issue with the new hardware!
Nope! I just installed a brand new one yesterday, left overnight connected to an always on OBD-II connector. Checked it this morning, turned ignition on to look at any footage. Device would not connect, would not show live view etc and felt hot. Front cam was cold as you'd expect (it's a mini 1 but no parking mode). I had to unplug the mini 2 wait 30s and power it up again, then it started working. It's running latest firmware as that was the first thing I checked when I installed it.
A baby ac unit or a solar powered fan to keep it cool. I have a black interior and wanted this camera. Thankfully i couldnt find it in stores and not wasting $260 on them for 2. Thanks for this update.
Great video and informative. What do suggest for this criteria: 1 camera, it can pivot 180 to 360 degrees, no GPS, yes on wifi to phone, excellent image to read license plates during day and night and easy to set up?
Really love your review, I just moved to Austin and had exactly the same thing happen to me. I can def tell you that this is a temperature issue because it didn't happen to me before. At the same time this makes absolutely no sense. What I have done now is that I actually unplug the camera from the cigarette lighter and it works just fine. Clearly, this Garmins problem, just like you I am sticking with the camera cuz its so small and barely noticeable... I wish blackvue or some other reputable maker had good mini version of dashcam.
Welcome to Austin!
I have one, they fixed the problem with the latest upgrade. There's no more parking mode and sound as well! The camera works as it should.
I don't think they can legally remove features such as parking mode, you need to be hardwired using the parking mode cable to see the option in the menu. Can anyone confirm it is fixed in 8.10?
Hey Brian! I've watched your 1st review of this camera. Excellent review and presentation. I really like how small it is, very un-obtrusive. Did you hardwire it to your car to enable the parking mode?
Yes, it’s hardwired in
I've just bought 2 of these babies. I'm going to wire them up in the next few weeks, when it stops raining/snowing. I have also purchased the official Garmin™ Parking Mode Cable. I'll let you know when it catches 🧨💥🔥
My camera has not caught fire yet... Seems to be working.
@@martinsarrionandia84 even now, when it's getting a bit more hot outside?
Hi Brian,
Just wondering if it's possible to turn parking mode off on your phone app before you start your car? Let's say you've parked in a sketchy area and would like to record in park mode at your discretion. Would that stop the overheating issue?
Thanks
just purchased a 66w on the black friday sale, tbh after looking at everything nothing looks like the real bee's knees so may aswell just grab something decent at this point. I do admire the fact you're living the dream as james bond but with slightly faulty tech
"...living the dream as james bond but with slightly faulty tech"
The difference between reality and movie fantasy.
I am interested in purchasing this and had a few questions with your specific setup. Also, after parking, using parking mode, did you try to turn off parking mode in the app before starting the car? Then, turn it back on when you want to use it again. Did that prevent the overheating?
Thanks for the video. They should have fixed it or reached out at least. They wont be getting my money. Thanks again
What if before you start your car up again you unplug it and then plug it back in after your car is started up.
Have you tried the Transcend Dashcam DrivePro 10? It is another small dash camera from a smaller company
Hello Brian it would be wonderful if at some point you would consider doing a review of the Garmin 56. Kind regards Raj
Ive had a dashcam 46 up front in my SUV for a few months and it's been flawless. This weekend I added a mini in the rear. They work well together but unfortunately the sensor in the mini seems to be too sensitive because it randomly detects an impact even though nothing has happened.
Brian,
You have a new subscriber! I loved the way you deliver the content. Ever heard of the Techmoan CZcams channel? He did dashcam videos for a long time and one of the things he did that I think you would benefit from is he would include the video downloads so you could view them on your computer directly as opposed through the CZcams compression. It did wonders for being able to see how good the video image was.
Thats a good suggestion, thanks!
As commented ot the original video, did you tried to change the SD card with another Manufacturer, or even another class(like Evo or Select...). I ask becauae GoPro cameras have similar problems of being picky with what SD card you use...
Brian, someone mentioned using a bigger memory card in the comments. Have you tried this?
nice whip
Same 66W Garmin going hot
Nice review, I think If ur insurance company will pay for any parking damage claims, then u don’t need parking mode... step up to 56 or 66w model, there are more features u will like. Especially got them while on sale. Mini is good, but for me , its a good rear facing camera in my opinion. Or u only want a setup and hide/forget.
If you get another one can you see if the hardware version is different?
maybe its an early hardware issue
Thanks for the great update/review! How did you install the hardwire to the car battery; yourself or a third party? I would like to have this camera on my vehicle, but unsure about cable install. Thanks!
I had the dealer do it. They hooked it into the fuse box under the passenger footwell.
@@BrianGreenstone thanks for the speedy response!
Hi Brian, I came across your video while searching for a dash cam. But I need one specifically to work in parking mode. I would prefer one that is small and connects to my phone via Bluetooth or wifi in order to view footage. There are just soooo many. Thanks!
Hope Garmin fixed this issue with the new version which is out now!
Brian, Garmin has your money and mine. The software updates are there to give consumers "hope". My Mini is working but then so far it has been between 60F and freezing.
Thanks for the review and update.
One question: Dont you get the parking mode option at all if you are using something else then the "garmin parking mode cable"? I dont need it to record all the time but it would be nice if it could record if something bumped into the car while parked.
I have USB outputs (5V*3A=15W) hidden inside the dash for phone and GPS charging. It is connected to the cigarette lighters cable harness which will shut shut down on its own after the car has been off for a while.
Edit: I see they have relased the Dash Cam Mini 2 now.
The parking cable has a third lead which acts as a sensor wire to determine if the car is on or off. Without it parking mode will not work. I just installed the Mini 2 today, so I will be testing it over the next couple of weeks. Review to come.
Am I the only one noticing how nice every single one of those cars are holy shit what do y’all do 😂

Hi Brian, awesome review. Do you know if the overheating issue applies to all Garmin dash cams? A week ago I brought a thinkware dash cam but the mobile app is terrible and I heard Garmin has a good mobile app. I was originally thinking about getting the dashcam mini just to have while driving and for parking mode and overnight just remove it. However, the overheating of the mini dashcam seems to be a constant issue. I was hoping the Garmin 46 dashcam doesn't have that same problem.
I don’t know, but I have a Thinkware F800 in my Jeep, and it has worked flawlessly for 2.5 years. The app is mediocre and so is the video quality, but at least it’s reliable. I still prefer the mini simply for form factor.
Good review. I just got this camera. Cant even find parking mode in the settings. I think they disabled it in the latest update
Have you found it yet?
I was looking at another review of the Garmin dashboard cameras, and the the creator of the video was able to demonstrate that the problem occurred when there was a short voltage drop when the starter engaged. I assume that there may be another hot line available which does not have a voltage drop on starting (assuming the voltage drop is programmed by the car to ensure that the starter is not competing with some other full time circuits). If your mechanic can find a better hot line that doesn't drop voltage on starting it may solve the problem. Otherwise is it possible as a nuisance but a matter of course to simply toggle parking mode off before starting the car. And then toggle it back on so it is ready for the next time you stop.
Thanks Brian. Does it use adhesive or a suction cup for securing to the windshield. Have you had any issues with it falling off the windshield?
Adhesive. It’s not coming off without serious effort. That 3M stuff sticks.
Hi Brian, After your well done review I bought the dash cam a month through Amazon in Italy and using it in South Africa where I live. There is no option parking mode, at least do not find it, and when I park the car it still records for about 2 min and then switches off... Probably Garmin resolved the problem not giving the parking mode anymore. For the resti it works perfectly.
Parking mode only appears when you have the parking cable attached.
Also not all Country permits to use it with Parking Mode. I bought my Mini i april 2020 and couldn´t get a parking cable for it in Sweden. It´s not allowed here. Other than that, it´s a very good camera.
My problem was trying myself if they fixed the issue. I read about before buying and just left it off. I decided to try it last month. My camera now is going back to not recording every time I use it I have it hardwired with the garmin parking cable. When I do notice that it is not on. I have to just unplug it and plug it back in. Not reliable if you don’t notice it’s not running. Is the mini2 reliable? I do not need parking mode either.
Hi, i bought it in June and don't have any overheating issues so far
I bought fans for mine and i use a powerbank to run them in parking mode. No battery drain on the car. Use the 12 volt when the car is running.
Hey thanks for the videos, new firmware out is 8.10 - does that fix the overheating at all?
Doubtful after 2+ years. I’ve moved in to the Mini 2 which doesn’t overheat.
Same problem with my Mini original. Had it about a year and now it overheats in about 30 seconds of starting my truck and shuts down. Camera is almost too hot to touch like you said. Mine does it in the winter too though.
Thanks sm I was about to buy this camera... I think otherwise
Hi I remember seeing your review for the mini 1 about 1 year ago or longer ,now Garmin released the Garmin dash mini 2
Yes, I am testing the mini 2 Now. I should have the review done in the next couple of weeks.
I still haven't attached my mini 1 camera to the car ,I had a change of car 🚗 last year ,so when I have a day off I'll install it in my new car 🚗
Is this still a problem, I just bought one for my Mum?
Im assuming you have done this test with and without the polarizing filter? I was just thinking what could be creating the heat. I am going to get one of these cameras regardless of the parking mode issue. Does it come with a different plug in vs the parking cable you used? and if so, did you do this test with that cable it came with? Thanks for your review
I thought about that, but since it overheats within seconds of coming out of park mode I doubt it matters. The camera isn’t hot when it’s *in* parking mode, but it gets crazy hot real quick coming out of it.
I don’t have a filter on mine and I have similar issue. If car is parked under cover/cool environment all good, if sitting in sun when in parking mode it overheats and locks up
I've got a mini 1 on the front and a mini 2 rear. The front is on a switched power feed, no parking mode. Rear is on a obd2 port with a low voltage sensor. I tried the mini 2 with parking mode first time and its hot when I tried to start the engine up, and it froze, couldn't connect live feed. It hasn't recorded anything overnight though, which is what I'd expect, it's only recording when it detects motion. Disappointing though. The mini 1 on the front doesn't even have parking mode as an option in the settings.....
Looking into a garmin mini for my daily driver, too many moron drivers. I specialize in everything maintenance but my specialty is electronics. I can almost GUARANTEE you when you start your vehicle you get the famous voltage drop which causes your camera to glitch, ie it shuts off, then it sees power and comes on through leg 2 (key power) of wiring harness but harness doesn’t realize the vehicle is now on because of the glitch and keeps feeding through leg 1 (always hot) side. If you care check your grounds first, if that doesn’t work change your wiring harness OR your source for power all together like a plug instead. This camera has great reviews and I’ll more than likely be purchasing this one or a garmin 46
How can you fix this using an OBD-II connector?
Ha you can’t do it through the obdII. You CAN however run a power and ground wire directly to battery though to power a 12 volt plug ie not going through terminals, bcm, ecm etc you won’t have the voltage issues. I went with Rove R2-4K and love it. Good luck
After watching both videos it does seem to be a good choice for size and video quality. As far as the over heating issue. I had a thought. Since it seems to run 2 power connections, 1 for key on and 1 for key off to power parking mode, is it possible that instead of switching power over to the key on side and turning off the key off/parking mode side if it is pulling power from both sides at once. That would explain the quick overheating.
It doesn’t run to power connections. There is only one power source, but the other wire is simply for sensing whether the car is on or off. When the car is off there is no power on that wire, therefore, the camera could not possibly power itself from that source when it is parked.
Well where i live its maybe as much as 80f 2 days a year. So maybe this will work great for me living in a nordic country?
Hi, can i put 2 of these dashcam in my car: 1 for front view and 1 for rear view recording ? Cause I have been looking for Front & Rear Dash Camera
Yes, the app supports many simultaneous dash cams
I bought a mini 2. After using it for several days, it overheated pretty much as you described. I returned it and bought a Vantrue E1 mini. So far no issues.
The Mini 2 overheated, not the original mini? I’m surprised. Mine has been working fine for a year or so.
@@BrianGreenstone yes sir
I’m curious, what did it do when it overheated? Did it just shut down, or did it lock up like the old Mini used to do?
@@BrianGreenstone if I recall, it stopped recording. I can’t remember if it locked up. But I do remember it was very hot to the touch. I purchased it thru Amazon in early July and used it for maybe a week and a half. FYI the day after I had the problem it worked again for a while until it got hot again.
The fact that it's so small could be a factor in over heating. Same thing with Chromecast. Though while a Chromecast can get hot, it still functions.
Sorry for the late comment, I just watched this video. I am relatively inexperienced driver with only 2000 miles of experience, but I find myself in constant danger from other drivers on the road. My question is as follows, does it do this overheating without the parking cable or only with it? Also can it connect to the fuse box?
It only overheats when using parking mode and parking mode requires the parking cable that is hardwired.
Saw both videos, good stuff. However over heating is a deal breaker for me. Garmin doesn't care? Thats enough for a hard pass
Thanks for the follow up review ! I was wondering if we could talk you into doing the parking testing on the latest hardware. I imagine there are likely hardware revisions on the old mini vs the new.
I’m unaware of any changes to the hardware.
Has anyone has issues where it only takes one minute clips? I use a 32 or 64 GB C10 micro sd however I am using them in a higher temperature/ extreme environment. I am using it to monitor suspension travel on a racecar and I cannot get the camera to record. However when I take it off the car and put it in my street car it works fine. Any suggestions?
From where I can get the same
Hi Brian, very nicely done both videos about this particular camera. Since I saw them, I started digging a bit the parking mode issue you mentioned, watching other reviews about this same exact camera, reading installation details about the parking cable and so on. I am sure you got this question already: are you 100% sure your camera wiring was correctly done? I heard you got two different cameras, but I don't really know if you changed parking wiring too or if your wiring was properly done on the car fuse box. Reason I am asking you this... is because I saw other reviews of this exact model and no one of other users ( of course the one watched) had similar issue. Would appreciate your answer. Thank you.
Yes, it’s wired correctly. The parking wire isn’t even used for power - it’s just a sensor wire. It never overheats running normally, so power isn’t the issue. It never overheats in parking mode either. It’s just when it switches from parking mode to drive mode that it suddenly overheats.
@@BrianGreenstone Not from what I saw on installation schematic. The parking cable kit it has an internal switch (and protection too) which supplies the cam from two different fuse sources. When you enter and switch on the car... the parking wiring harnes should switch from ACC to Constant (Batt.) power feeding. It could be possible that this switching is not happening on your Parking wiring kit.
No, it’s just a sensor wire. It cannot provide power for parking mode because there isn’t any power on that wire when the car is off. It only gets power from the main lead. It wouldn’t matter either way because they’re both plugged into the same 12v fuse bank.
@@BrianGreenstone This could be causing the problem you have. The parking cable, from what I see, should be connected to two different fuse feedings, one on ACC (on key) and another on Battery. If not, if on the same fuse, could be that the internal switching is not happening or is malfunctioning. Just to let you know, I bought two of these cams, and I will install it soon on my car. I'll let you know.
They’re both on separate fuses, but it’s all coming from the same fuse box, so there’s no difference in voltage on any given fuse. Just some fuses are on the switched circuit and some are not.
Brian, Garmin doesn't contact you. Did you ever try to contact Garmin? You do nice reviews! Thanks!
Yes, I spoke to their support people many times about it. They’re just a call center in India, so they have no clue what I’m explaining to them. They just read off a cue sheet.
I'm not sure the camera overheats and then freezes due to the overheating, it could very well be the other way around: Maybe it freezes when trying to switch modes, and whatever the software is doing when it's frozen causes it to also overheat. Just a thought. Thanks for great reviews.
That is a possibility.
Hi Brian! Have you tried the Garmin Constant Power Cable that uses the OBD-II port for parking mode? I'm assuming that is an alternative to wiring it up using the parking mode cable. If it's not, what is the Constant Power Cable for, exactly? Garmin doesn't explain this clearly on their website. Thank you!
No, I’m using the regular parking cable that plugs directly into the fuse box. The purpose of it is that it has three wires instead of just too. It has a ground wire, A power wire that plugs into the battery main voltage, and then a sensor wire that is plugged into any of the fuses that is related to the ignition. That sensor wire is what the camera uses to determine if the car is parked or not.
So "ignition off" is the trigger for parking mode then?
Has the updated firmware helped with the download speeds to your phone?
Not that I’ve noticed. It’s got very simple WiFi hardware, so it can only go so fast.
I also like the small size of the mini and have eyesight in my Subaru so I didn't want to block that view. It appears you have the camera "hardwired" ? and last I don't really need parking mode anyway, can it be turned off and will it stay off until turned on again or is it a default setting which turns on each time the car is started ?
Yes, I have mine hardwired. Yes I turned parking mode off permanently.
@@BrianGreenstone Thanks, I really do like the mini and it will fit well in the Subaru, knowing that I can turn off the parking mode permanently will be great and I shouldn't have any of the nasty overheating problems. I like Garmin products and I would think the video quality is probably pretty good on the mini.
Hey. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but when this overheating happens when going from parking mode to “normal” mode, what does the LED on your camera do? Does it turn green immediately after starting your car and then turn solid red (normal recording)?
I ask because I installed two of these today with parking mode cables and have tested it a handful of times and from what I can tel it is working as it should. When going from parking mode to normal mode it records and drive like it normally should.
I don’t remember any green light coming on during startup. I just remember red. It may work perfectly if it’s cool outside, and even if it’s hot it still works sometimes. Last winter it worked fine for 3-4 months straight.
The green light comes on every time I start my car, then it switches to solid red (recording). This happens on both of my cameras.
But yeah, it’s not hot right now so maybe that has something to do with it.
Thanks for the detailed reviews though!
When not in parking mode and you turn on ignition it goes from green to red. When mine has been in parking mode and has overheated no lights come on at all. It’s just very hot and dead
Great follow up review - can you speak on the software drive app by Garmin that you sync when using this dash cam? Looks like the most recent reviews are not favorable.
It’s better than most dash cam apps. I don’t have any issues with it other than downloading the videos is slow.
Sorry for me being ignorant, but I am confused as to what the parking mode does and also confused about the parking mode cable...Does't the camera require a power cable to be used and is there a second cable to be used for the parking mode ?....really confused here..
Thanks for the response in advance.
Richard
The parking cable supplies power and it also has a sensor wire to determine if the car is on or off. When it’s off it tells the camera to go into parking mode.
@@BrianGreenstone So in the app can you just have the parking mode not active ?
Really wanting this dash cam for out motorhome, but I am a bit concerned about the heating up issue.
On parking mode just it plugged in your cigarette lighter will it work. This is for any dash cam in general. What dash cam would you recommend for parking mode
That won’t work. If your cigarette plus is always on then the dash cam will be in drive mode until the batter drains. If it’s switched then the camera will shut down entirely. The parking mode in my Thinkware F800Pro works flawlessly.
SOLVED ! I just put memory card with 256 GB and my Garmin dash cam stoped overheating. Max size is 512 GB for my Garmin 56 dash cam. If I put memory card with low capacity like 32 GB it become too hot that I almost cant touch it.
Did this solve the problem for you Brian?
@@losxlakers Hopefully Brian will respond soon :)
I have not tried putting a different sized card in there.
That must mean that the overheating is only occurring due to the looping function . And it'll probably start overheating again once it starts looping again
@@BrianGreenstone can you try? :)
5:20 Something tells me that it's always recording. Just that when something happens, .like an impact, it saves the recording. I'm mean surely you'd want to see what happened in the seconds before the impact.
My theory would be the small size of the camera itself along with the compacted guts inside of it all contribute to the overheating issue.
I’m sure that has something to do with it, but the weird thing is that I can drive all day long and it will never ever overheat. It only Overheats after transitioning from parking mode back to driving mode. That’s what’s so weird about it.
I wonder if the 8.10 firmware finally fixed it?
have you tired changing the adapter??
You mean the parking cable? No, but I had it tested and the voltage is normal.
Garmin just released new line of dash cams (June 9, 2021) including Mini Dash Cam 2. I wonder if they fixed this issue in the new release? Let us know if anyone tries out the new mini cam 2.
Thanks for the heads up on that. From looking at the information it is hard to tell what exactly is different. It essentially appears to be the same camera.
You'd hope given the feedback the overheating issue would have been solved!
Your video is the reason I haven't purchased one! If the mini 2 can work effectively in parking mode Ill likely go for it as the Nextbase models seem to get very mixed reviews
My Dash Cam Mini 2 that I purchased last week turned off today in the middle of two-hour drive. I could not turn it back on until the Mini 2 was off for awhile and I restarted the car. Unplugging the dash cam did not do anything. Per my wife, the dash cam was really hot when we realized that it was off. I turned off the parking mode after experiencing the random shut off.
@@newcleannow I read comment that installing larger memory card helps. What size were you using?
@@hpgarage9130 I’m using 64gb Samsung endurance. I thought it was large enough.
Question, Have you tried turning off parking mode before restarting the car?
That gets asked a lot. You cannot change any settings or access the camera while it’s in parking mode.
Jasmine A
Thanks for the quick reply. Does the parking mode only work if hard wired? Also what would happen if you unplug it from the camera itself?
Could you manually stop parking mode and then start things back up again to get around the over heating glitch? It would be annoying but if it let you keep parking mode it might be worth developing the habit.
Many have asked that, but I haven’t tested it since it’s not a viable solution.
Do you know of any camera that will record continuously and not place files in 3, 5 and 10 minute clips? In your previous review of this camera I believe you said it was smart enough to know how long you drove.
None do that because it would be unwise to do that. They save short clips so that if there’s a major incident that causes a file to become corrupt it will only be a short clip and not the entire recording.
Brian Greenstone thanks for or responding! If you get this camera for your wife you should post a video stating where you purchased, the price and if it overheats.
I don't see a Parking Mode in Settings on my new Garmin Dash Cam Mini. Did they delete that function on new ones?
It’s only there if you’re using the parking cable.
@@BrianGreenstone What is a parking cable? is it different than the one used as power cable?

Have you ever considered Viofo 4K dual channel dashcam? I heard it's of the top quality when it comes to resisting extreme heat like here in TX! I'm soon hoping to get a GX460 and I'm shopping for a small dashcam like yours but I also want heat resistant and best parking mode
Viofo is the best brand for budget choices!
So I can see that u have a wire running to the dashcam but I've seen people turn on the cam without it being plugged in. Does that mean I can run the camera without parking mode on and without running a cable? Im looking for really discreet use in my classic car I don't really care about parking mode like u said just mostly when I'm driving for that protection
All dash cams need a cable. Good ones have battery or capacitor backup, but that’s only good for a few seconds or maybe minutes.
Just plug it in to to a 12V USB plug in the car. The plug however needs to be power free, as soon you shut down your car, otherwise the Camera still will be running and drying your battery.
@@Leffe49 my car is 52 years old so will have to figure out how to wire it into my key system if I'd like to put one in
Do you have the issue that when car is off & you want to view footage live from app it doesn’t let you? I literally have to turn on my truck in order to see all the functions on the garmin drive app for the dash cam mini kinda sucks.
Well, yeah, I mean it needs power to work.
@@BrianGreenstone well yeah that’s why I connected via the parking mode cable. Thought doing that fixes the issue. Or is there not a way to do that?
The parking cable just tells it when the car is on or off and supplies power to keep it in parking mode, but it shuts off the rest of the camera including WiFi to save power. If you want it on all the time then just hardwire it straight in or use an always-on cigarette plug.
@@BrianGreenstone thank you appreciate that. Hoping not to over heat! Let’s see how it does. Texas heat gets over 100 hitting March time & summer.
