  • This multi-million record-selling artist isn’t exactly known for taking suggestions. But that hasn’t stopped legions of fans from sending him ideas for his next song. In fact, Weird Al Yankovic is bombarded with so many pitches that he has called it the bane of his existence. However, that being said... there was one time that he did make an exception. Afterall, when an 80s Icon Madonna told a friend that she wished that Weird would make fun of her smash #1 hit from 1984. Weird Al Obliged with one of his funniest take ups ever. The video and song Like a Surgeon would land the comedy genius or Sonic comic back on the billboard hot 100 and drive his album Dare to be Stupid to the top of the charts. So, get ready, it’s the completely unexaggerated, absolutely true story about one of the greatest songs of our time. Am I being sarcastic? Find out next Coming up… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Alright, in honor of his new movie, today we are once again giving you the Weird Al treatment. In the past we have covered Eat It, Fat, and Smells Like Nirvana. But for this episode we’re going back to the 80s to take an in-depth look at after 80s parody that has a bit of a twist… A great story to this one.. LEt’s get into it. By the time Weird Al released his third album, Dare to Be Stupid in 1985, it was clear that he was here to stay. No longer just an unknown accordion-wielding goofball, Al had broken into the mainstream to become a world-renown accordion-wielding goofball.
There was no denying that Weird Al, aka the Eat It Guy, had become a household name. His Michael Jackson parody Eat It had reached #12 on the Hot 100 single was the breakthrough he never expected would happen. Said Al, “the day that video went into heavy rotation on MTV, my anonymity disappeared. Literally overnight, I became a celebrity... As a person who was fairly anonymous his whole life, I'd suddenly be walking down the street and having people stare at me.”
After that, my albums went platinum. My concert tours sold out.” And that kind of success was enough to prove to Al had figured out a winning formula. Parodying chart topping artists was the way to go. After all Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’ had gone to #1. In the future, Al would go after more chart toppers like MJ’s Bad, Tiffany’s remake of I Think We’re Alone Now, Dire Straits’ Money for Nothing, and Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise. And he would keep plenty of Top 10 hits in his crosshairs as well.
But to follow-up the success of Eat It, Weird Al turned his attention to a rising star who had just turned in a #1 hit of her own. Madonna and the reason he did it was Well… She requested it. Like Al, Madonna’ career was just taking off. In the summer of 1983, she released her debut album, Madonna. That went to #8 in the US and featured three Top 20 hits: Holiday, Lucky Star and Borderline.

Al's songs never quite push over the borderline of dark humor, but rides right up to it, and this one is no different. One reason I think his humor resonated across the generations is he wasn't shock and grotesque, nor squeaky clean and innocent, and never overly juvenile or pretentious. He found the perfect balance and executed perfectly.

One of my fond memories was going to a rock concert in Houston, Texas around this time (probably at Fitzgeralds to see King's X). The crowd was starting to fill in the floor in front of the stage pretty well and the place had some generic music turned up to keep folks happy before the opening act came out.
Finally Madonna came up on the mix that was playing, but the crowd didn't care. Instead of just shuffling around and waiting, we all started singing "Surgeon" lyrics over the top of the song. Folks were dressed in black and ready to be "hard rock" serious, but at the same time cracking up at knowing Weird Al songs that well. Very fun for all of us to know that it didn't matter what you listened to: Everyone *also* loves Weird Al.

I actually got to interview Al in 1994 while I was writing for my university student newspaper, which is one of the absolute highlights of my life. Weird Al definitely had an impact on my highschool years. I had a similar appearance with the glasses, longish curly hair and a mustache. I would get called "Weird Al" all the time. Sometimes I would buy some Weird Al style shirts and wear them to school just for laughs. I did follow his career and thoroughly enjoyed his parodies. My friends encouraged me to make some of my own, but I couldn't play any instruments or sing, so I just wrote my ideas out and let my friends do them karaoke style listening to the original songs on a boombox. Years went by and my son was born. He liked to listen to my records and tapes with me. When Al had Al TV on MTV my son and I would watch together. He would get laughing so hard when I would dance around the house acting like Weird Al. My wife doesn't have the same liking for Al that I do. It hurts so bad when she wants to turn off the radio or tape player whe n Al comes on. Sometimes I still make up my own parodies. Al sure doesn't have the same quality of songs to parody that used to be out there. How is he supposed to make fun of a song that's already nonsense? He definitely came along in the right era. The '80s and '90s were primetime for what he was good at.

I always loved Weird Al. I'm not familiar with his newer stuff since I'm not familiar with the stuff he is parodying. Popular music of the last 20 or so years is like nails on a chalkboard to me. His stuff in the 80s and 90s is still classic.

Not listening to Word Crime is a crime. He so nails the original perfectly.

@@billkeithchannel I've heard Al's version, but never heard the original. He almost always nails the original version. He, and his band, are way more talented than they get credit for.

Weird Al’s songs are often better than the originals.
    The 80’s were the best!

Always great videos. Not sure you look at comments. I think I recall hearing Weird Al on a show called Dr Demento. Not sure if you have done a video on Dr Demento, but I think that would be awesome and well related for you r channel as many songs got their first take on that show.
