  • From studio gopher to global superstar, Jon Bon Jovi spent years chasing his big break. Working the club circuit as an underage teenager, Jon was shocked one night when his musical idol Bruce Springsteen jumped on stage and started duetting with him! Actually, he was singing The Boss's song at the time. Pretty cool. Later when Bon Jovi finally got a demo for his song Runaway recorded, he was rejected by every record label in the biz. And he thought that maybe it was time to call it quits. But in a last-ditch effort, he decided to sneak into a New York radio station and pitch Runaway straight to the DJ… The DJ ended up playing it and virtually overnight the song was a hit and set this singer up for a record label and a major tour… the only problem was Jon didn’t even have a band! Up next, the story of Jon Bon Jovi’s tenacity, and how he formed a band after Runaway hit it big and transformed a would-be pop idol into a hard rock icon NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to return to another one of my favorite shows that we do on this channel. It’s called Breakthrough. In this show, we break down songs, albums, or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career and gave them the momentum to rocket to long-term success. I gotta tell you, I’ve been watching the Bon Jovi Documentary on HULU and I’m Blown away at Jon Bon Jovi’s drive and tenacity… He really deserves all of his success. But it’s interesting because Jon almost went a totally different route… as a rookie he was startling the fence between pop and rock… Today we tell the story of what took him from a would-be pop idol to a hard rock icon, with the story of their 1984 debut, Runaway.
So Bon Jovi was formed in 1983 in New Jersey, but our story actually begins before that… back when lead singer Jon Bon Jovi was still known by his given name John with an “H” Bongiovi. Jon started getting into music big-time while he was a teenager, attending Sayreville High School in New Jersey. There he joined nine other musicians to form a Rhythm and Blues cover band called Atlantic City Expressway… Among others, the ten-piece covered songs from New Jersey natives Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny… played at clubs along the Jersey Shore, and this even though they were underage.
Actually, in 1979 Jon and the band were even joined onstage by Bruce Springsteen himself while singing the Boss’s song Promised Land… One minute Jon was up there performing and the next he looked over, and there he was - Bruce Springsteen - on stage singing along. Going back to high school the next day, Jon was walking on air. The impossible felt possible. And he realized that nothing mattered but the music. Forget math class. Forget all the high school drama.

I was not in the least bit a bon Jovi fan.. But I do give the man much respect because he opened I believe 3 soup kitchens in the Manhattan and Jersey area. During COVID he had a hard time getting help so he would go to these soup kitchens and help out by washing dishes and prepping food. Working 12 hour days even. Much props to Jon! It was 2003 Bon Jovi along with the Goo Goo Dolls were getting ready to perform at the old Arco Arena in Sacramento and I was working for a foster care agency at the time working In Kind Donations. Around 3pm I received a phone call from the Sacramento Kings / Arena Donation Department offering me plus 10 kids tickets to that show that night. I couldn't refused the tickets despite the one stipulation I had to bring 9 kids and 1 other foster parent. It was one hour before showtime and I got the tickets to make a long story short. Bon Jovi put on a great show and I have always been a fan since the 80s. Bon Jovi and Jon will always hold a special place in my heart

I knew as soon as I saw the thumbnail this was gonna be about Runaway. Saw Bon Jovi open for the Scorpions at Madison Square Garden right when this song became a hit. As a singer I also experienced something similar to Bon Jovi in the same era. It was 1987 and I was fronting a band of my own in NYC. And not to toot my own horn, but at the time I was a very similar looking guy to Bon Jovi. Good looking, long blonde curly hair, green eyes, cowboy boots, the whole look. Anyway, we played a showcase type show at CBGBS. After the show one of the A&R guys came to talk to me. He said he liked the band alright but was more interested in me as an individual. And was interested in signing ME to a deal. I immediately turned him down and said I was all in with the band. It was us or nothing. Well, nothing happened. That was it. Five years later the band was over and here I am typing this in 2024. The road less traveled huh?

This was their first hit before their blockbuster Slippery When Wet album gave them their massive success so many people who are not die-hard fans may not be familiar with the song. I'm glad you're covering it. Bon Jovi is probably my favorite band and I just love there fun upbeat rockers than you can headband and still smile and have a great time to!! 🤘🏼 the band and Jon Bon Jovi’s work ethic is so admirable and appreciate them so much for all they’ve done and continue to do! And their documentary is amazing just a great love and appreciation for them! I recently bought their first 4 albums from the 80s and they’re great of course Slippery When Wet and New Jersey are the staples for sure!! 🤘🏼❤️

My daughter and her roommate were singing along to Living on a Prayer in the student section at a Notre Dame game a couple of years ago. They were shown on the Jumbotron. Then the camera pans up and Bon Jovi is in the section above them watching them sing his song. His son went to ND and was the holder for the football team. Still one of her favorite memories.

Soundtrack of my life. I'm 45 and my "conversion" to rock & roll was hearing "You Give Love A Bad Name" on the radio in 1986. At 8 years old, I was hooked. I can reference every period of my life from a Bon Jovi song and/or album.

I bought the Runaway cassette in 1983 (13 yrs old) when I was staying with my older sister for a couple weeks. She looked at the cover and was concerned about the long hair. She asked if mom and dad let me listen to that kind of music (I was generally listening to ACDC and Iron Maiden at the time). So I got it. I liked it. Still like it today, even if this early Bon Jovi work is mostly unknown by his fans.

Slippery When Wet was my introduction to Bon Jovi, and man, what an album. I finally got to see them perform live back in the late 1990s at Milton Keynes, U.K. for their These Days Tour, and Jon Bon Jovi told us all that These Days had just become Number One, beating Michael Jackson. That was a great concert. They arrived in a helicopter, and walked on stage hidden by a marching band who were playing Lay Your Hands On Me, then when the marching band finished and left the stage, Bon Jovi were revealed and they kicked off. It was amazing. I’m glad I got to see them perform live in their prime.

Standing at the pump with the radio blaring from an Exxon on Rt. 220 in Cumberland, MD, headed home across the state line to PA. I couldn't believe what I had heard. STILL their best song ever!!

Growing up my area had two competing "pop" radio stations. One mainly sugary pop songs like Borderline, Karma Chameleon and the like. The other played the same stuff but not as often and also played the hard rock that started to be acceptable such as Some heads are going roll, Runaway, Run Run Away, I only listened to the second station due to songs like Runaway. It caught my attention and I loved it. I've always liked Bon Jovi and his solo work. His music has changed over the years and I've basically stayed with him but it's the early years that I still play more often. Great video Professor.

In 1984 I was 15yrs old and took a Greyhound from the cornfields of central Illinois to Milwaukee WI to live with my 20yr old boyfriend who had left the cornfields to avoid going to jail for driving without a license (again), “She’s a little runaway” was my favorite song! Looking back it’s a wonder I survived my teen years lol. After the summer was over we went back to our little country town and my boyfriend spent his 45 days in jail and eventually we all grew up, but I’ll never forget that summer!!! ❤

Touring with Scorpions was really big thing for them. The Scorps were easily the deadliest live band of that era - they just killed it every night. Tight and high energy with Klaus Meine nailing the vocals night after night. Bon Jovi got the best school imaginable watching that band every night.

I remember taking my 2 oldest sons to see 38 special. Bon Jovi had released slippery when wet...at that moment, I had only heard about Bon Jovi from my construction co workers...I was a single mom of 5 working my way to becoming a registered nurse. Anywhosie, BonJovi opened for 38 Special in Nashville ( one of my favorite bands at that time)...probably sometime in 1985?
I remember it was a packed crowd that diminished when 38 Special came on...I laugh about it now. Then, I was, like why is everyone leaving? A few months later, well I knew why. 😊 Many years later as my sons' dad was dying, he requested my oldest son to sing "Wanted Dead or Alive" at his funeral...he rocked it!!!
