Old Fords are like a LEGO set! Every engine will fit every gearbox and drive shaft.
The Mk2 Mondeo in 1998 still has either Silver or Blacktop but all the bolt patterns are the same for RWD or FWD
I built a ZVH turbo engine (1.8 zetec bottom end with CVH head) and all patterns are the same.
When the Duratec came out they used Mazda engines and gearboxes.
But when the Zetec SE came out (Yamaha engine) they used the old RWD T9 pattern!

No offence but your out of your depth a bit here, it’s a Ford engine mazda adapted.
Mtx75 box fits, fiesta st150 ib5+ box fits, focus mk2 2.0 duratec box fits. Any box with a bell housing adapter plate for £2-300 quid
A bit more homework would have saved you a lot of hassle.
I’m no mechanic but know these things.
    Duratec 1.8 2.0 2.3 2.5 Ford engine 2.5 has vvt
Mazda 1.8 2.0 2.3 have also got vvt.
A lot of internal differences/ dipstick location inlets etc.
Major thing you should have checked.

    Zetec has a belt

Are the 'black top' engines cast aluminium or engineering plastic?
Biggest problem I have with Ford is they use the same name for vastly different engines (guess that's the problem you found as well?)
I've got a 2004 Mazda B2300 but no idea what actual engine is in it, I know it's Ford and maybe Ztec?

@@mike_themechanic That's good to know, 'plastic' seems to distort and leak oil into spark plug recess. I've worked on motorcycles about 50 years and never liked engineered plastics on engines, even alloy on the Honda 750/900 (and various Kawasaki's, Yamaha's and Suzuki's) allowed leaks around plugs when the seals were not in right or age hardened.

The Mazda version is arguably better than the Duratec, Ford cheaped out on the bottom end components, namely the pistons and rods, to get 300bhp from the Duratec takes a lot of work, not so much with the MZR.
