  • I run the see-through rotary engine Full Throttle to see what maximum rpm is that this engine can crank out using a non-contact tachometer to measure the actual RPM number.
    Here's a link to the Non-Contact Tachometer that I Used: amzn.to/2qEr5wM
    Here's a link to the full episode on this see-through rotary engine: FULL EPISODE of See Through Rotary Engine • See Thru Rotary Engine...
    I got curious and decided to measure the accuracy of the non-contact tachometer, is it was extremely accurate.
    in the previous video, I stayed at 18000 RPM because that's what the owner's manuals says, I think it was more like 22000 RPM that's my guess.
    in the first run in this video I got about 23,000 RPM I saw that was pretty amazing but then I lean out the mixture and I got a whopping 29,000 RPM, I had no idea the Wankel rotary engine can get up to such a high RPM.

It just seemed strange that it idles ad 5-6,000RPM but I guess it does!

    • @timz1908

      You would measure rpms at eccentric shaft, the output of the engine. You would not measure at the rotor, an internal engine component. We dont care how the engine does it we just need to measure the output. But yes the actual rotor itself will always be rotating much slower than the e shaft, by 1/3, one of the designs strengths.

I also think you're the only guy who has done a rotary engine so far. You should try out other engines, maybe a tiny turbine engine, 2-stroke engine, steam engine or turbo/supercharger? I am pretty sure the rotary triangle spins 3 times for every one rotation of the crank shaft. This gives it an effective engine rpm of 8,333 rpm. I am pretty sure I heard that on a rotary forum at least.

Hard to tell, but if I could pour 1oz in that wankle, that'd be 30cc or .03x80ft/lb or 2.4 ft/lb peak I'd guess around 12k?, perhaps 2ft/lb at 16k? So maybe about 6hp? Just my ball park guess with no more than looking at the video with the most basic data.

      That engine appears to be a O.S. Engines 49-PI (0.3CU / 4.91CC) based upon size in relation to hands and it's RPM achieved. The 49-PI is reported as outputting 934 watts / 1.24 HP at 17,000 rpm and torque is about 0.37 ft/lbs. So @ 29K rpm it would be outputting ~1500 watts / ~2 HP.
      All the other engines I've seen are 20CC or larger have thinner fins and lower rpms.

    • @JimmysTractor
      @JimmysTractor Před 6 lety +2

      Cerberus984 I thought it was 6 times that-whoops. I estimated 2ft/lbs at peak hp, you say .37ft/lb. So, you think peak torque is at peak rpm? Now that I have displacement, I'd figure 1/6 my up guess- 1hp at ~16krpm

    • @Cerberus984
      @Cerberus984 Před 6 lety +1

      @Jimmy's Tractor
      I simply used a 2 input toggle calculator that asks for rpm + torque or rpm + hp then solves for other. Then sourced my data from Barnard Microsystems which displays a vast variety of RC engines. The fins are equally thick on the OS engine and has same amount of end plate bolts. Although, the first two fins right of the exhaust port differ from the video I saw to the picture from my data source there were two different generations of that motor.
      The next step up (different brand) is a 20cc Nitto NR-20EP is significantly larger from the videos I've seen people holding it in their hand or on a bench top.

    That seems about right on the RPMs since there's so little rotational mass. I've done alot of thinking on the designs used in most rotary engines. Particularly the rotor itself.
    The biggest problem at the rotary engine faces to prevent it from becoming the best engine ever in my opinion is its efficiency. A lot of its energy is lost before it can never be converted into mechanical energy. I think that can be fixed by rounding off the lobes on the rotor. Making each combustion chamber round instead of square. This would allow one solid ring per combustion chamber rather than the ones that are piece together at the corners and allow some of the energy to escape. The rotary engine an amazing engine just because of its simplicity. So making it even more simple is the best route in my opinion

    • @JustKyzuuh
      @JustKyzuuh Před 6 lety +5

      Rotary engines are thermally innefficient by design, what you're thinking won't change that.

    • @burritomaker69
      @burritomaker69 Před 6 lety +1

      Whether it be a traditional otto cycle style of engine or this Wankel its not possible to achieve greater efficiency by any of the methods you mentioned. Both of these engines face similar problems with irreversible processes therefore it could be no better than the Otto cycle. For example by rounding off the lobes you'd decrease the combustion cycles efficiency to do work on the rotor. There is a reason the wankel has used basically the same lobe shape since its inception. Lets say that you did find an optimized shape to achieve what you're saying the main problem is still not optimized by doing that. If you'd want to make an ultra efficient Wankel you'd head more towards the material science aspect of things and need to probably look toward the use of materials like ceramic that way you could run hotter fuel, that would do what you said in your original comment. Now of course using ceramic brings in a host of other issues as well and that's the problem.

      @Rahziel420 Před 6 lety

      The lobes and the "wobble" are how it achieves compression.
      That would be like taking the crank out of a LS, and replacing it with a straight rod. Sure there is still a combustion chamber, but with no compression.

    • @BIGGlep
      @BIGGlep Před 5 lety +2

      Wankel makes for excellent airplane engine... Where you pretty much set a certain RPM and stay there for extended period of time. By design the Wankel makes for a pretty terrible "car" engine. SO while it does work in ground vehicle applications, the rotary engine is best suited for high RPM airplane engines that only require a narrow rev range.
