- I run the see-through rotary engine Full Throttle to see what maximum rpm is that this engine can crank out using a non-contact tachometer to measure the actual RPM number.
Here's a link to the Non-Contact Tachometer that I Used: amzn.to/2qEr5wM
Here's a link to the full episode on this see-through rotary engine: FULL EPISODE of See Through Rotary Engine • See Thru Rotary Engine...
I got curious and decided to measure the accuracy of the non-contact tachometer, is it was extremely accurate.
in the previous video, I stayed at 18000 RPM because that's what the owner's manuals says, I think it was more like 22000 RPM that's my guess.
in the first run in this video I got about 23,000 RPM I saw that was pretty amazing but then I lean out the mixture and I got a whopping 29,000 RPM, I had no idea the Wankel rotary engine can get up to such a high RPM.

Well I almost talked about that when I said "600 runs" in this video, but I withheld that material science information since It took me over 2 months to develop this particular material, with supplier advice from my NASA engineer friends. This material mix is amazing!, And these tests further prove it's durability. I may reveal what it is in the future but it's not exactly glass but is 98% transparent. Maybe I should send you a slug made out of it !.

Hey, get back to shooting stuff with unusual ammo!
Nitro engines run very cool. If you see a cylinder head temp of 250+ degrees F the engine isn't long for the world. Thats a "loaded" temp. Bench-testing "idling" engines is pointless.
"Glass" is a what more than a thing. Glass doesn't have to be transparent or even translucent.

In a Wankel, the shaft rotates 3x faster than the rotor due to the built-in gear. So the real r.p.m. at rotor level is 10,000.
I noticed that when he did the frame comparison that the rotor only did a 3rd of a rotation. Not too familiar with rotaries so i was a little confused.
But isnt the most important part the crank-RPM?
Engine RPM is the speed of the output shaft. It doesn't matter what happens internally.
Wt abt torque bro
Then might as well say piston engines make no revolutions
just like with firearms, I'm so amazed at how fast combustion type engines operate mechanically with how fast the combustion/explosive process occurs, and so efficiently without more breakages... simply incredible
Thats the good thing about mechanics. The only speed limiting thing there is how strong your material is
i am a mechanic for over 50 years and i am still amazed at the speeds of engines, intake, compression, power, exhaust cycles... the speed change a piston ,, it stops twice and goes the opposite direction each revolution.. 3000 rpm divided by 60 sec =50 revs per second= 100 direction changes per second... amazing

I'm very glad you did the fps calculation. Thank you for not just straight trusting the meter. Very impressive numbers!
Same, I was wondering what rotating part he was reading off of with the meter. For example, I was thinking it might have been reading 3x what the actual RPM was if it was reading from the rotor and picking up each corner (the triangle piece). It just seemed strange that it idles ad 5-6,000RPM but I guess it does!
You would measure rpms at eccentric shaft, the output of the engine. You would not measure at the rotor, an internal engine component. We dont care how the engine does it we just need to measure the output. But yes the actual rotor itself will always be rotating much slower than the e shaft, by 1/3, one of the designs strengths.

Awesome. I watched a few other see-thru engine videos on CZcams that used the same engine set up you did. Yours had much better lighting, a clearer camera view and using different fuels really helped with the visuals. None of the competition compares to yours. I also think you're the only guy who has done a rotary engine so far. You should try out other engines, maybe a tiny turbine engine, 2-stroke engine, steam engine or turbo/supercharger? Good call plugging that you made more see-thru rotary engines, I bet mechanic schools would be interested in buying those for class demonstrations.
I still can't believe people make comments like "I can't believe you don't have x subscribers yet." Like their arbitrary number is the definition of "success".

I am not surprised. A single cylinder 2 troke nitro R/C car engine typically reaches 30,000 RPM. A race spec engine can reach as up to 45,000 RPM. 29,000 RPM from a rotary RC aircraft engine is not as unbelievable as you might think. Impressive but not unbelievable.
Theoretically, Rotary engines have no physical limit to how fast they can rotate. The only limits are things like how much fuel and air you can supply, limits of the metals, friction, etc.
Smaller is the system, smaller is the system's time constant, because of less engaged mass into work, so it should be able to get a faster speed, at least in theory
Rossi,Picco,O.P.S.,MVVS,COX,SuperTiger, And so many more
I am pretty sure the rotary triangle spins 3 times for every one rotation of the crank shaft. This gives it an effective engine rpm of 8,333 rpm. I am pretty sure I heard that on a rotary forum at least.
So that 45,000 rpm engine would read 15,000 rpm's in the car.
That 45k rpm engine isn't a rotary engine though, that would be a 2 stroke piston engine but it would only be ~5cc

I love those mean mini braps lol. You need to make Rob Dahm a mini 4 rotor and put it in an RC car. That would be a good collab video.
Wow that’s a fast little engine
At 29k, thats 5.5hp for every ft/lb
Dave Micolichek I figure about 100ft/lb per liter on 2 strokes and would guess the wankle is midway between that and a 4 stroke- maybe 80? Hard to tell, but if I could pour 1oz in that wankle, that'd be 30cc or .03x80ft/lb or 2.4 ft/lb peak I'd guess around 12k?, perhaps 2ft/lb at 16k? So maybe about 6hp? Just my ball park guess with no more than looking at the video with the most basic data.
That engine appears to be a O.S. Engines 49-PI (0.3CU / 4.91CC) based upon size in relation to hands and it's RPM achieved. The 49-PI is reported as outputting 934 watts / 1.24 HP at 17,000 rpm and torque is about 0.37 ft/lbs. So @ 29K rpm it would be outputting ~1500 watts / ~2 HP.
All the other engines I've seen are 20CC or larger have thinner fins and lower rpms.
Cerberus984 I thought it was 6 times that-whoops. I estimated 2ft/lbs at peak hp, you say .37ft/lb. So, you think peak torque is at peak rpm? Now that I have displacement, I'd figure 1/6 my up guess- 1hp at ~16krpm
@Jimmy's Tractor
I simply used a 2 input toggle calculator that asks for rpm + torque or rpm + hp then solves for other. Then sourced my data from Barnard Microsystems which displays a vast variety of RC engines. The fins are equally thick on the OS engine and has same amount of end plate bolts. Although, the first two fins right of the exhaust port differ from the video I saw to the picture from my data source there were two different generations of that motor.
The next step up (different brand) is a 20cc Nitto NR-20EP is significantly larger from the videos I've seen people holding it in their hand or on a bench top.
Cerberus984 cool, looks good. I just guessed.

You can try to use a sound analyzer too, for speed measuring
I seem to recall he did that once, using Audacity.
That's what I was thinking. 483 revs per second with 3(?) exhaust pulse per revolution should give a note at about 1449Hz. I'm not any kind of musician but that seems to match the note on the video quite well.
Actualy, it's only 483 exhaust pulses,. The rotor runs at a 1 to 3 ratio...
I measured this from the audio in this video and I get it even higher at 30,180 rpm. I used the fundamental frequency of the exhaust sound at the highest RPM which was found by spectrum analysis at 6:25.503s to be 503Hz. Multiplied by 60secs you get 30180 RPM.
Fascinating engine and the high speed camera footage is amazing.
Yep you can totally do that, definitely kind of cool I have dab a little bit into ultrasonics in the past, it's kind of cool how you can analyze the footage to determine the RPM. And that amount of RPM is definitely crazy
Thank you
3 combustions , so multiply by 3 should be done, to audio burst frequency
Thanks, good info
That seems about right on the RPMs since there's so little rotational mass. I've done alot of thinking on the designs used in most rotary engines. Particularly the rotor itself.
The biggest problem at the rotary engine faces to prevent it from becoming the best engine ever in my opinion is its efficiency. A lot of its energy is lost before it can never be converted into mechanical energy. I think that can be fixed by rounding off the lobes on the rotor. Making each combustion chamber round instead of square. This would allow one solid ring per combustion chamber rather than the ones that are piece together at the corners and allow some of the energy to escape. The rotary engine an amazing engine just because of its simplicity. So making it even more simple is the best route in my opinion
Rotary engines are thermally innefficient by design, what you're thinking won't change that.
Whether it be a traditional otto cycle style of engine or this Wankel its not possible to achieve greater efficiency by any of the methods you mentioned. Both of these engines face similar problems with irreversible processes therefore it could be no better than the Otto cycle. For example by rounding off the lobes you'd decrease the combustion cycles efficiency to do work on the rotor. There is a reason the wankel has used basically the same lobe shape since its inception. Lets say that you did find an optimized shape to achieve what you're saying the main problem is still not optimized by doing that. If you'd want to make an ultra efficient Wankel you'd head more towards the material science aspect of things and need to probably look toward the use of materials like ceramic that way you could run hotter fuel, that would do what you said in your original comment. Now of course using ceramic brings in a host of other issues as well and that's the problem.
uncleweirdbeard
The lobes and the "wobble" are how it achieves compression.
That would be like taking the crank out of a LS, and replacing it with a straight rod. Sure there is still a combustion chamber, but with no compression.
They are actually fairly efficient when run at a single speed with non overlapping ports, but you'll never get good power that way.
Wankel makes for excellent airplane engine... Where you pretty much set a certain RPM and stay there for extended period of time. By design the Wankel makes for a pretty terrible "car" engine. SO while it does work in ground vehicle applications, the rotary engine is best suited for high RPM airplane engines that only require a narrow rev range.
Anyone know the music used from 6:02-6:23? I tried a few music recognition sites with no hits. The music along with that transition into the slow motion footage of the fuel being injected into the rotor housing and the engine screaming to 27k RPM was goosebump inducing. Good freaking job.
