Finishing & Running the 2 ROTOR Wankel RC!

  • The process of joining two O.S 49 PI type II engines, has come to its end!
Apart from a bad start and a broken rear counterweight, everything went well. The engine at the moment, is working at very rich settings to prevent any overheating and it will be leaned out gradually.
Also there are some leaks that need to be addressed, but other than that, the engine starts right up, idles perfectly and has incredible throttle response considering the rich settings.
It took me a while to finish it and the result is very rewarding.

@@stevedunn854 I don't disagree that the rotor/plate failure was a blunder. 👍 I still take the broader view that the channel owner's general skill set, which is plainly evident in all of his build videos, is such that it shouldn't be unthinkingly dismissed out of hand (which is the tone of Alexander's comment). A simple mention of the rotor/plate issue, or even a gentle critique, would have been the correct and diplomatic approach here. It's instructive to consider that JohnnyQ90 could have edited out this particular event, but he didn't. His long-established M.O. should guide our corresponding feedback.

To brake in a nitro engine in cold weather you need to block off all it's cooling fins because otherwise it'll never get up to operating temp, and that's running the engine with a load, sometimes running it wot for a few seconds at a time. In a car it would need a cooling duct and fan to run with a proper tune but these engines don't need a ton of cooling like gas engines do. I don't know about this engine specifically, but I've seen os rotary engines rev out to 25-29k before (unloaded). Most nitro engines can rev in excess of 30k rpm and some can rev over 40k.

It ran and flew well, made good power, but it had to run rich which is not efficient, and with glow fuel this is messy. My first one gradually lost compression and stopped running after a year or so, despite careful initial breakin and running it rich. OS sent me a new one under warranty. Despite its limitations, it was a unique and fun engine.

You certainly did a beautiful job machining all the parts for this twin rotor. It turned out very nice. I was looking at your cooling fins knowing these motors run very hot. Then i realised the amount of fuel you put through the engine provided the additional cooling. I used to run a Mazda RX8 rotary but it only manged 45000 miles before requiring new apex seals. Would be great to see your engine installed in an aircraft.

Just a straight pipe would be the best option. Wankels LOVE a free flowing exhaust.
Edit: He is also using the 2-stroke pipe as a means to pressurize the fuel system and deliver fuel pressure to the carb. Without the pipe on it he would need to design some sort of fuel pump, which wouldn't be easy. With the current exhaust and pipe, it acts as a rather linear, RPM referenced, fuel delivery system(more fuel pressure as the RPMs go up). Not easy to replicate the same kind of fuel delivery system without using a pressure tap on the tuned pipe.
