  • EMPEROR Akihito is abdicating after a 30-year reign.
In December 2017, the Japanese government announced he would voluntarily abdicate by April 30, 2019 due to his age and declining health.
In 2016, he said in a televised address he was concerned he would not be able to fulfil his duties fully following his health issues.
Akihito has had treatment for prostate cancer and heart surgery.
His final day as emperor saw him take part in many ceremonies including praying to a Shinto sun goddess.
He was seen as an emperor who played an active role in easing painful memories of World War Two.
Akihito also sought the bring the monarchy closer to the people.

can we just appreciate this: in world war 2, the king of the united kingdom was an important figurehead. a symbol of unity and history but still subservient to the actual democratic system of rule. in ww2, the emperor was supreme, a god-like figure, a complete representation of the people's will and the vigor of the japanese. in such short a time, the relative power of the japanese emperor has reduced to the level of britain or even below it in terms of actual law, and everyone accepts this including the new emperor himself. this is exactly what he was born to do, and someone had to do it. the japanese revere their current emperor at the same level as the british revere their queen, it is a representation of their culture and history, and that's what he represents, and how he earns revenue for the japanese state. so in terms of what he is doing for his country, i can only say bonzai!

If it helps, the (now-former) Emperor wore Japanese regalia for the private abdication ceremony earlier that day. And Japanese emperors have been shown wearing Western clothing since 1868.
