- American Shad, In this video we'll be on the St. Johns River fishing for American Shad. We'll be trolling for the shad using shad darts that I made . After fishing for about 2 hours we ended up with 7 nice American Shad. When we got home I cleaned the shad then we backed them in the oven for about 7 hours, which is long enough to soften the bones so you can eat them. Joyce makes some good looking meals.❤
She sure does, I'm lucky because I've been eating them for 57 years. Thanks for Watching our videos
Growing up in Jacksonville, my mom called them stink shad and we would throw them back. They look delicious!
The shad we're catching are American Shad not stink shad (they do stink and I wouldn't try to eat one) they are a salt water shad that come all the way from Nova Scotia to the St Johns River, they used to be very popular, Google American Shad, they have a lot of history. Thanks a lot for Watching our videos
Looks terrific Joyce! ❤❤
Thanks
Shad roe too… one of my favorite treats!
Some of the Shad we caught were full of roe. Thanks again for Watching
Dear Jesus that looks delicious.
It is Rose
Nice looking fish

Y'all making me hungry to go out and catch me some shad but it's a little cold up here and i don't thing their here but i know the trout are biting , thanks for sharing your catch & cook with us. Larry
That's ok, you can't beat trout. Thanks for Watching
Me and my late brother loved to fish for shad with ultralight rods and reels and usually 4lb test. We practice catch and release for the ones we don't need to keep. I like them when my friend Gary smokes them in his home made smoker.
They are fun to catch. I've also caught them fly fishing and that's a lot of fun. Thanks for Watching our videos
I also use a fly rod now and then and have a couple dozen flies made up last winter but did not get a chance to go out fishing due to my job. Keep the wonderful videos coming.@@TheOldCoupleOutdoors
Looks awesome yall. It would be nice to reach in the t.v. And try a bite!! 🤣
God bless yall. Keep up the videos the kids and I love them!!! 👍🏼
That would be nice lol. We're glad you and the kids enjoy our videos, Thanks for Watching
When I was a kid long ago and would catch those small fish, my dad said those are Herring, not shad. Great video keep up the good work, stay safe,
They look kinda the same. Thanks for Watching our videos
Hello Joyce and Sam ❤
Hello, Thanks for Watching
Looks like you had fun.
We did have a lot of fun that day. Thanks for Watching our videos
Your content is so good and wholesome, you should have many more followers. I’ve learned a lot about crabbing from your videos. How far down the St. John’s do the shad go? I’m in central Florida, usually go around 520, lone cabbage
Thanks, we fish around where 46 crosses the River (Shad Alley) in Sanford and we've caught them a couple of miles south of there.
Hi young couple. I don’t like fish. but the way they look after Joyce cooks them makes me think that I could possibly eat one. they’re normally too squirmy wormy for me. I do enjoy crabs and shrimp because the crabs fight back and are mean little suckers. thanks so much for another great video my unmet friends.
Try making fish cakes out of your fish, they're almost as good as crab cakes. Our problem is we think we're the Young Couple but we're not lol. Thanks for Watching our videos
@@TheOldCoupleOutdoors As I recall my friends. I think my wife has some salmon fish cakes in refrigerator. I’ll give them a try. you guys are the youngest Old couple I’ve ever run across. of course I’m no spring chicken myself! I am looking forward to it you’re next fishing adventure on the water. God bless you guys
Nice work 👍
Thanks
Can't believe it's already shad time again. Looks like so much fun! Thank you Joyce for showing us how beautiful those fish are. I always love seeing the stuff y'all catch up close:) and thank you Sam for showing us the tackle and telling us the way you catch stuff:)
I love Joyce's recipes. I'm ready for her cookbook to come out❤
We can't believe it either, it seems like the years are getting shorter. Thanks for Watching our videos
Good video, you two
Thanks and Thanks a lot for Watching
Boy that wind is strong..be careful Joyce.
We were Rose, Thanks
👍🏽
Thanks
Very cool video from you both, i never had shad before but i would try it one time.
If cooked correctly they're good. Some people get them mixed up with those stinky gizzard shad, these are American Shad they come all the way from around Nova Scotia to the St. Johns River each year. Thanks for Watching
Good to see u guys, l miss you😂
We're glad you enjoy our videos
You got it jumping up we saw that...he can jump right into the boat.
Rose, They've got close to jumping in the boat a couple of times lol.
Looked delicious!
Thanks and Thanks for Watching
🦈🦈🦈 Ft.Pierce
Thanks again Robert, for Watching our videos
Nice video guys. Ill let you eat them but ill catch them...lol
Not a fan of the taste of those.
Hey Sam, a trick i use to take the scales off the fish when your inside the house is scale them in a bucket of water or fill your sink and do it there. Catches all the scales.
Tight lines
Thanks for the tip Ed, that old scaler kept the mess to a minimum. Nice hearing from you
Great video Sam and Joyce your fish looks amazing eating good food tonight thanks for video much love ❤️ from Tennessee
Thanks Helen, always nice hearing from Tennessee
Yehaw !
Thanks for Watching
Hey guys I'm here.
Glad you made it Rose
those bones sound crunchy, not sure i would eat them, but looks amazing.
Gail, they're actually soft, like canned salmon. They make great fish cakes. We've been cooking them like that for years, we keep checking them and when the bones are soft they're done (about 8 hours). Always nice from you
I love catching and eating american Shad in washington State. But my least favorite park is the scaling. I always find fish scales a few years later
I know what you mean, that old fish scaler I have works great and keeps the scales from flying around. Thanks for Watching our videos
👍
Thanks
Thanks
Thank you.
I did not know what a "Shad" was. I had a friend named SHAD, I didn't know he was named after a fish 😂😂😂😂
Interesting fish, Google, American Shad. Thanks for Watching
I've never eat shad before. In fact I don't think I've ever caught one. I've tried other fish that were called trash fish. Like gar, and mud fish. If I ever catch one I'll definitely try it.
It sounds like you don’t live on the coast. American Shad are a saltwater fish that mostly only enter rivers to spawn. They are not like freshwater shad. Freshwater shad are inedible bait fish.
@@robgover8341 Your right I don't live on the coast. My closest to the coast is around 2 hour drive.
Just like Rob said, they're not gizzard shad that stink so bad, don't try to eat them. The American Shad spent most of their life in the Ocean. They travel all the way from around Nova Scotia to the St Johns River where we catch them. You even need a saltwater fishing license to keep any. George Washington was a commercial Shad fisherman. Thanks for Watching our videos
I first thought you were catching gold fish they looked gold under the water maybe the sun was reflecting on them
That's the tannic acid in the St. Johns River that makes them look that way. Thanks for Watching our videos
Fried shad roe
The White Roe too. We called it Poor Man's Fried Oysters
It's popular this time of year. Thanks for Watching our videos
First
You're right, First. Thanks for Watching our videos
I never saw fish get cooked that long
It is long and the meat is still nice and moist. It takes that long for the bones to get soft, we've been cooking them like that for years. Thanks for Watching our videos
what you kids catching them on
Red and yellowish pearl color homemade shad darts on a tandem rig. Thanks for Watching
So if you start hacking on a bone , put it back in the oven?😮. But even though it's the American style Shad it's still a little skeptimisticism.
No what we do is check the fish every 2-3 hours to make sure there is water in the fish cooker after that we feel the bones to see if they're getting soft after they're soft usually about 8 hours we taste them. The water keeps the meat moist. We're cooking American Shad they used to be a very popular fish going back to George Washington who was a commercial Shad fisherman and they're fun to catch. Thanks for Watching our videos we appreciate it
8 hours 😅😅😅😅😅
It stinks the whole house up lol, but they were good.
