Dokkodo - 21 Principles in the Path of Aloneness by Miyamoto Musashi, a brief analysis

- This is a brief analysis of Dokkodo, 21 Principles in the Path of Aloneness written by Miyamoto Musashi. Musashi, who began his career as a ronin (landless samurai) killed his first man when he was only 13. It is even said he may have done it with a wooden sword. Over the course of his life, he won over 60 duels, never losing once. Towards the end of his life he served as a retainer for a local Daimyo. He used this time to work on a series of books he would eventually publish, most popular of which was The Book of 5 Rings. A handbook for any inspiring swordsman of the time, and today, for martial artists throughout the world. The Dokkodo echoes many Stoic philosophies despite Musashi almost certainly having no exposure to it. It perfectly gives us insight into the similarities of Eastern and Western Philosophy. Despite difficult wording, in part due to translation, there is much to learn from this short work. We will be exploring Musashi more including an analysis of The Book of 5 Rings as we go forward.

"Instead of looking for a life without suffering, seek for strength to suffer well"
This 1st principle got me right away.
The 1st Principle seemed very Stoic to me so I figured I’d analyze it from that angle, the Dokkodo is certainly very interesting and full of insight when pondered deeply.
@@thewarriorphilosopher I got myself into Stoicism in 2020 and since then I can only say that my character has improved.
I am much stronger, able to put up with more shit and just overall I have more peace of mind.
I wish for each and every man out there to seek strength and courage (by attacking adversities) in these full of feminized men society that we live in.
Just a suggestion, read about Prophet Muhammad, there are many sources you can find, but I’d suggest to start with “Islam and the destiny of a Man”. You won’t be disappointed and it’ll add a lot more to the existing idea of stoicism you already have.

It will embrace you.
*Solitude. Loneliness is a negative word.
Well spoken, sir.
I love being alone
When you have no one, no one can hurt you.
It is insane how almost every principle can be applied to modern life to live happier even with all the social media shit, depression, weakness.
This man was waay ahead of his time a true genius.
You’re 100% right. Musashi’s principles are timeless and important now more than ever.
I think we just devolve instead of evolving. That's why this man seems ahead of his time for us.
@@serenityssolace it is 💯% true.
To live happily is to gain personal power
A swordsman that died of natural causes clearly had to have been of strong body and sound mind
The 21 Principles:
1. Accept everything just the way it is
2. Do not seek pleasure for its own sake
3. Do not, under any circumstances, depend on a partial feeling
4. Think lightly of yourself and deeply of the world
5. Be detached from desire your whole life long
6. Do not regret what you have done
7. Never be jealous
8. Never let yourself be saddened by a separation
9. Resentment and complaint are appropriate neither for oneself nor others
10. Do not let yourself be guided by the feeling of lust or love
11. In all things, have no preferences
12. Be indifferent to where you live
13. Do not pursue the taste of good food
14. Do not hold on to possessions you no longer need
15. Do not act following customary beliefs
16. Do not collect weapons or practice with weapons beyond what is useful
17. Do not fear death
18. Do not seek to possess good or fiefs for your old age
19. Respect Buddha and the gods without counting on their help
20. You may abandon your own body, but you must preserve your honour
21. Never stray from the way

"Think lightly of yourself, and deeply of this world" best words to help someone who is sad, as most people who are sad are absorbed in themselves.
These 3 years have left me broken inside and this year especially has taken a lot from me. Now I barely see my future, but watching this video has given me a bit of motivation to carry on
Even within all the many sufferings we experience in life, there still exists so many beautiful things we haven’t seen or come across yet. I encourage you to look into Albert Camu’s analogy to the Myth of Sisyphus. Perhaps it might help you out a bit. If you ever need to talk I encourage you to check out our discord channel and reach out there. 🙏
The last 3 or 4 has done the same to me...one day at a time

same here brother, i spent 3 years with someone thinking they'll be with me forever. only for them to leave me when i was ready to propose. fight on brother.
8 months later. I hope you are doing better, friend.
To understand most of these you must experience them, understanding them as reassurance and a reminder to be consistent in good practices
I’ve been making lots of big mistakes the past 5 or so years of my life. Toxic relationship / home, slight dependency on pills, liquor everyday, crashing my old car 2 times in 1 hour, and just recently totaling my dream car and receiving my 2nd DUI after only a few months of getting sentenced for my first. If you’ve read this comment this far I guess what I mean by all this is I know better and always have. Lots of time to think while walking everywhere with no car. All of these hit home for me I just lost touch with myself temporarily. If your feeling the same, as mentioned in this video every second and every day is a fresh opportunity. If we don’t have hardship in our life we can never truly learn or build character. Keep your head up, and just keep going one step after the other.
I hear ya, brother. Got myself in similar trouble when I was a little younger. From having carelessly created that hardship for myself, I was able to take a path mentally (and often literally) that I otherwise wouldn't have for a year or so of my life. Changed everything for the better. Hang in there. If you feel like you want to improve, you already are.
No Doubt, A man is great by deeds, not by birth. (Great)
Absolutely, we all have the ability to go beyond what’s expected of us if we live with discipline and vision.

Eloquently articulated. The spontaneity of life, both chemically and metaphysically, presents constant and inescapable chaos and disorder which hinders one’s ability to maintain their way. Oftentimes, a reminder like this is necessary so that we may rationalize our meaning and avoid a plunge into a frontier of overwhelming despair. We must find comfort in uncertainty and not allow ourselves to be engulfed by its anonymity. Cheers comrades, let us embrace our suffering nobly and smile at the face of death.
I couldn’t have put it better myself! Never stray from the way
Comfort in uncertainty. I love that.
As someone who has been meditating for 13 years or so, I find these rules to be very powerful.
There’s nothing wrong with being lonely. It’s natural for us to crave attention especially from a girl we love, it’s all about balancing your emotions without getting rid of them completely
Being lonely and being alone is two different things.
What dokkodo says here is aloneness not loneliness 🙏
I’ve already been walking down this path… this video just put what I was already doing into words.
That’s great to hear, keep it up and stay on the path!
When we were in lockdown during the pandemic I started listening to the wisdom of the stoics and that brought so much light into my mind. It reshaped the way I was seeing things and helped me reshaped my being. This is what schools should be teaching kids. To think for themselves and critical thinking♡♡
Absolutely, the education system creates followers more often than leaders. Of course, you need both, but I believe creativity and critical thinking, as you mentioned, aren't developed enough in school.
@@thewarriorphilosopher yes both are needed because b4 one becomes a leader needs to be a follower. Leadership comes in all shapes such as being the leader of your own life. If we can find a good leader then being a follower is great. Keep up the wonderful content♡♡♡

You can continue the journey or lie down in stillness, regardless if moving or not you are only going somewhere if you believe you are.
To me, this is what becoming a real is. Not the overbearing and toxic shit you hear CZcamsrs like Hamza, Sneako and their ilk spew.
I agree. The issue with those guys is the manifestation of their insecurity through an over obsession with material success and social hierarchy. Their self worth comes from how they are perceived by others while the truly enlightened person only needs self validation to be at peace.
Love the music choice and vagabond manga panel in the back, really liking this video
I appreciate it! I’ll probably be using pictures from Vagabond for most of the Musashi videos!
From a 42yr old man with a 22yr old son, i feel this video is solid advice, for anyone.
The number one thing I've learnt, is there is nothing outside of myself that can make me, all the answers are found in deep searching and are within my grasp if it is what i desire.
Never be afraid to express yourself, the things you have gone through have shaped you, and all the positive things about you have come from strength- this is who you are today, do not be afraid to assert the things you know to be right and righteous.
Evil is allowed to take place when men do nothing.
And to be a hero, to be heard- takes bravery, in just that moment.
Be brave when you need to be, build yourself up to be strong, weak men are a danger to society.

Musashi and Guts really changed my perspective of life, even though they both have colliding viewpoints. E.g. Musashi accepts things as it is, embracing life as it is, without stressing about the negatives too much vs Guts who will fight against fate itself to have a sliver of peace for a few moments
@Karruxo9 you've never heard of berserk? Guts in the main "protagonist" of the story
Thanks for this video. I wanted a written copy of it for reference so I typed it out with some of my own wording of the precept explanations. Here it is for those who want to copy it as well. Enjoy.
_The Dokkodo - Miyamoto Musashi_
*1. Accept everything just the way it is*
-Rather than wish for a life without suffering, look for the strength to suffer well, and overcome. “Men are disturbed not by the events, but their opinions about their events”. - Epictetus
*2. Do not seek pleasure for its own sake*
-Reject pleasures that bring only sort term gratification. What feels good usually is not good for you. Suffer today, and live tomorrow as a king among men.
*3. Do not, under any circumstances, depend on a partial feeling*
-Take your time to consider a major decision.
*4. Think lightly of yourself and deeply of the world*
-You are a small piece of a large whole. Only focusing on oneself will cause you to miss much of the wonder and knowledge the world has to offer.
*5. Be detached from desire your whole life long*
-Rather than allow desire to drive you, work towards the goals that you have set out for yourself. Practice gratitude for what you already have.
*6. Do not regret what you have done*
-Who you are today, is not who you are yesterday, nor who you will be tomorrow. All past experience is a teacher.
*7. Never be jealous*
-Compare yourself only to yourself yesterday. If a man has achieved something you want, rejoice, as this proves that it is possible.
*8. Never let yourself be saddened by a separation*
-Loss is a part of life. Redirect the grief into hard work and continue fulfilling your destiny.
*9. Resentment and complaint are appropriate neither for oneself nor others*
-Take responsibility for your situation and if you don’t like it, make changes.
*10. Do not let yourself be guided by the feeling of lust or love*
-Instead, be guided by your principles. When love is right, it will find you.
*11. In all things, have no preferences*
-Be unbiased and open to learn from everything.
*12. Be indifferent to where you live*
-It is not where you live that matters, but how you live. The things you own end up owning you.
*13. Do not pursue the taste of good food*
-Overindulgence weakens the mind and body. Practice moderation in all things.
*14. Do not hold on to possessions you no longer need*
-Mindless accumulation of things weighs on your mental well-being. Therefore, gift things you no longer need to those who would use them.
*15. Do not act following customary beliefs*
-Those who follow the status quo will never change the world.
*16. Do not collect weapons or practice with weapons beyond what is useful*
-Focus your time and effort on things that yield returns.
*17. Do not fear death*
-Allowing fear to determine one’s actions is true spiritual death. “Death is smiles at us all, all we can do is smile back.” -Marcus Aurelias
*18. Do not seek to possess good or fiefs for your old age*
-The only thing that survives your death is the impact you have left on the world.
*19. Respect Buddha and the gods without counting on their help*
-God has already given you all the tools you need to prevail. It is up to you alone to learn this.
*20. You may abandon your own body, but you must preserve your honor*
-Never sacrifice who you are and your principles for a temporary sense of safety.
*21. Never stray from the way*
-Be unshakable in your devotion to the path. Be disciplined, and even the strongest storm will fail to break you.
Thank you

Ever since I moved away from my childhood friends back in 2021, I would find myself alone all the time during school and that affected me mentally. I felt lonely, but it also was a good thing for me since I had time be alone and have peace to myself thinking about life.

Conor McGregor could learn a lot from this 😢 sad to see him go from a dreamer with passion and determination to become someone so set in materialistic pursuits.
McGregor at least live in ultimate concentration on whatever he strive to do
He certainly was on “the way” for a long time but yes, unfortunately money and fame can corrupt, as money and fame often equate to power. I hope he can find balance in his life one day and inner peace.
Look at number 9 again :)
The way he fell means he was never in the right path, he knew how to fight but he was never a martial artist because he lacked the humbleness and the respect you learn through martial arts.
But sadly we see a lot of that today.

Man, that Steve Jobs quote really hit home, one must seek in himself rather than worry about opinion that do not empower him "Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma-which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition."
