Fred Astaire & Rita Hayworth - The Shorty George

  • From film You Were Never Lovelier
    Columbia Picture (1942)
    Director: William A. Seiter
    Screenplay: Michael Fessier, Ernest
Songs: by Jerome Kern and Johnny
You Were Never Lovelier was Rita's third and last film released in 1942 and her second time as Fred Astaire's dancing partner. Except for "The Shorty George" number, all their dances were rehearsed in the attic of a funeral parlor! They had to stop every time a funeral procession came through and couldn't start up again until all the mourners had left. But if those conditions disrupted rehearsals, it didn't show on-screen. The results were fabulous. Rita later called this movie one of her favorites, but it was also memorable to her for another reason. During rehearsals of "The Shorty George", Rita experienced one of her "most embarrassing" moments when she fell down during the dance and knocked herself out cold! The film is set in what was one of Hollywood's favorite locales at the time, Buenos Aires, and also features Xavier Cugat and his Orchestra to add to the Latin flavor of this memorable musical.

Not only was Rita a smooth, fluid dancer, she was very easy on the eyes and a hoofer, to boot! What is wrong with Hollywood today, that there has to be so much hate, fighting, sadness and crime in movies? THIS is what is missing! Scenes that make us feel good about our lives!

Rita called the films she made with Fred Astaire her 'jewels' because she knew it was the culmination of all her hard training and early dancing career with her father - that she could almost match the matchless talent of Fred Astaire. And that is why he too so enjoyed dancing with her because she was almost his equal in a way that no-one else was, or at least that is how I see it.

I just hope that what’s to come isn’t a continuation of “modern dance.” While it takes practice and training to do it, much of it is actually ugly by intention. That bears repeating - ugly by intention. Classical ballet, Fred, and Gene Kelly found ways to convey every emotion while keeping it all beautiful to watch. It horrifies me to think of how modern dance would portray the death of the swan. Ugh. Double ugh.
