- A dance number of Fred Astaire and Ginger Roger's in Roberta (1935). It's actually called "Hard to Handle", but I think they're just hot in their teasing manner here. This is one of their most fun-loving routines, including the signature bugle call. Credit to Warner Bros.

That was an era when actors and actresses were seriously talented. Actually talented and gifted. It was a completely different world back then. No one can compare to Rogers and Astaire. No one. Today’s entertainers are completely untalented rookies compared to those who made the Golden Age of Hollywood.
once the dancing starts, it's one camera shot. from start to finish. no editing, no different takes. one shot, one dance. true perfection. astaire and rogers, we love you.
He would expect nothing less
I mean, it was all a single take, but it doesn't mean they only did one lol
Me. Enjoying this absolutely marvellous performance. In 1935. I wasn't even born then
Anybody here? In the middle of quarentine, watching Fred and Ginger is pure joy
We are re I agree. Stay safe
Oh Yeah Fred and Ginger❤️❤️❤️
👍
Fantastic
Absolutely
The amount of skill, coordination and sheer STAMINA it took to dance like that is just nuts!
Ginger was the best partner Fred had. Even after days of practicing you can see the pure joy they had of dancing together. There is no play acting here, it is complete bliss. They will never be a dancing couple like them. And Ginger of course was absoloutely beautiful.
the good old times, wish people still danced like that and had that classy attitude.
If ever two people were made for each other (other than my 2nd wife & I) it has to be Fred & Ginger. The most perfect dancing pair that ever was or ever will be.
everything about these two were awesome and breathtaking
Dana McDaniel hello 👋
How are you doing
MAGIC...sadly there is no such talent and entertainment today.
They are just in PERFECT harmony together. AMAZING
Charming and real class. Something Hollywood has completely lost today!
I grew up watching Fred and Ginger movies. The movies were so beautiful and always made me smile! These movies will never get old to me. It's too bad we don't have entertainers and movies like this anymore. During this time most actors could sing, dance, and act.
Greatest dancing pair in history , nothing more be said .
These two are unreal! The greatest dancers of all time.
Fred and Ginger..."iconic" couple 🔥💯
I am madly in love with Fred. He has the most charming smile...
I saw a documentary about Fred and Ginger in 1995 on the BBC, shortly after Ginger passed away. In that documentary, which I have still have on VHS, the commentator stated how this clip was filmed in one take, the WHOLE dance. They had worked so hard in rehearsals they enjoyed the take, hence Ginger's laughter which the director decided to keep in. Class acts these fine pair of hoofers!
I used to watch these Fred and Ginger when I was a young kid..and now I still marvel at their performances..I heard that Fred practiced till it was perfect and even then practiced more..he expected the same from whom he was dancing with too...amazing!
Those days they had the rhythm, and all that jazz movements. They where born that way. :)
Im a 14 year old and i LOVE this!!!!!
They were a match made in dance heaven. ❤
Spontaneous, fun dance, fantastic chemistry!
Nobody did it like those two. A delight for decades.
I'm 17 and I have been watching these two since I was 3.
the technical difficulty of this number is matched only by the fun that Fred and Ginger had performing it! Such a lovely gift for all of us.
this is fred and ginger loose and frenetic - something they didn't do often AND they are enjoying themselves. love the exclamations by both dancers throughout.
Their musicality is just astounding.
according to Ginger's biography this is the only time they danced on a hardwood floor....and the laughs were real... certainly one of their best films...
What a wonderful movie clip. Notice the way they both laugh while dancing and the acting doesn't stop when they begin to dance. This dance expresses the sheer joy they found in dancing with one another. Thank you.
This sure put a smile on my face.
Just the epitomy of elegance and style!!! Excellent dancing ,beautiful clothes, that can be worn even in our days. This is dancing, two great talents and to think that these filmes were made in the thirties, this particular one in 1935!
One of the greatest dancing pair of golden era Hollywood.Privileged to watch their skill in movie Top Hat(1935) directed by Mark Sandrich.
Fabulous. Nobody absolutely nobody dances like this any more..beauty, elegance and absolute class.
SPOT ON!!
They were very skinny people these 2
*Cough* Broadway *cough*
I’m having those strides ... dancers. Nothing compares
Have you EVER seen anything like it?? Watching them, even this many years later, just makes my day!!!
You know I love them both and I know people say everyone used to be mesmerised by Fred and his dancing, sure enough he was brillaint, but I can never take my eyes off of Ginger. Such an elegant, beautiful Lady and an amazing mover! She really was all that is best about female beauty and grace, personified!
I beg your pardon, I'm 18 years old and I love this.
I LOVE Fred Astaire n ginger rogers!!!! They are my favorite dance team! I have all there movies n lobby card photos! Just AMAZING!
Fred was a genius, his rythm was impeccable.
Ginger was marvelous also, but Fred's musicality makes him special to me.
I love how relaxed and happy Ginger Rogers looks in this routine.
This dance of theirs is my favorite. I love seeing the joy in their eyes. 🩷💓💞💗💖💕
brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!!
Fred Astaire made dancing look as natural as breathing. There have been some great dancers, but no one ever moved so smooth or perfect as him.
It still amazes me that Ginger never had a dancing lesson in her life! That is just one incredible woman !
Except of course, for Fred (and Hermes!) training her for 19 years, six of them intensely. Thank goodness!
Real dancing, and not a sequin in sight!
They are both having so much fun. :)
Ginger gave Fred so much class..her performance in dance is totally trusting, relaxed, fun, and SKILLED
When grace, elegance, humor, and class gave birth to something eternal.
Hey! I'm thirteen and I know what true talent and class looks like!
I have watched dancers ever since I was a child, many years ago. Have only just realised that when it involves Fred Astaire I watch him, EXCEPT if his partner is Ginger Rogers.....then I always watch her!!
My eyes never know what to settle on with these two... they're both so engaging
Fabulous and love Ginger's outfit.
My two favorite dancers of all time. I just love Fred and Ginger, and everything they did together.
for hundreds of years there has not been such a pair of dance and will not be found for another hundred years
They are just magic real joy watching them in quarantine or not
Ginger's magic is that she held her own personality with Astaire. The mark of a top performer . The scenery just melts away.
I'm 13 and I think this is amazing... A generation never has just one opinion you know.
Sadie Carey...Sadie....you’re wise beyond your years. You’re going places.
This is a swell number. Thanks for posting. Made me smile.
Netwitt1 hello 👋
How are you
I LOVE the movie Roberta! and this number is my favorite dance number of all their dances because they look like they are having SO much fun! LOL
This is just great. You cant help but enjoy and have a smile on your face. They are so cute together. Love this scene.
Ah Fred and Ginger. Absolute perfection. They never fail to make me feel good.
Fred & Ginger absolutely the best!!
I am no dancer, but when you watch, you want to dance! Love their movies. It is simply the best of American enterainment....
This is really dancing together. It's not just great technique either. Ginger dances differently than Fred, yet they are still very much relating to each other through movement. Sometimes her steps are more abbreviated than his, and always, she's more expressive than him. This is the first of their great playful duets, in their third film. F & G literally created the definition of what great dancing looks like, and it's very appealing. It brought millions to the dance halls, all over the USA.
I disagree with you on the point about her being more expressive. Fred is clearly more expressive with his whole body in ways that Ginger is not. And it flows more naturally from him even though we all know he rehearsed like crazy to make sure every movement appeared effortless.
An abbreviated movement wouldn't make her more expressive. As a matter of fact, I would think it had the exact opposite effect.
Fred danced with his whole body. He was no stiff. But Ginger's performance was all about damatization of the dance...not about cheographic perfection. Fred and Pan used her gift to full advanage. See Waltz in Swing Time.
@@followthefleet1 I've seen every Fred & Ginger film (as well as over 40 films featuring Fred throughout his career). And he was definitely a master of "dramatization of the dance." Not just choreographic perfection. Those 2 things are not inherently separate. And you can see that here in this number and every single dance he ever did. He's not just dancing. He's acting while he's dancing, and giving a full performance.
Hermes and Fred always created a routine that Ginger could achieve, but she learned early on that she had to rise to the occasion because the level of skill required to do what he needed her to do wasn't something she was used to prior to their partnership.
When they first started dancing together, she used to complain about how much they rehearsed and how her feet used to bleed. It took other professional dancers telling her that that reality is the norm for most professional dancers for her to recognize that she wasn't going to have anyone cut her any slack.
@@candacen7779 Fred and Pan designed their dances knowing Rogers' tremendous dramatic potential. Fred was always first interested in seeing his partners' takes, because he knew that in paired dancing audiences would be watching her, more than him. He wanted his partners to look great. In fact, regarding his early career, which put him on the map, he gave Ginger more credit than himself for their success.
They are wonderful! Another country, another time, another culture, but the conversation of their dance is understandable without words.
This dancing couple. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Were light on their feet and a joy to watch. Good times!
I love this number. Fantastic!
The really really amazing thing is how fun they make it look, and how much it looks like they are just improvising and having a good time ... when actually every single movement is rehearsed. That is great acting while dancing!
Watching this incredible dance number, it's so easy to see their one-of-a-kind chemistry and what made them the greatest movie dance team of all-time. And -- what great choreography by Fred and his genius co-choreographer, Hermes Pan, who never got the credit he deserved. The syncopation is pure heaven. And the fun they had doing this number!! You hear Fred loving it openly and Ginger giggling. They *knew* it was going well and enjoyed it immensely. A gift to us all!
All true, and you could see how great an actress she was, her lines flowed naturally and when it came time to dance there was no leaving the character behind, her expressions, mood transitions, everything. I love the way this starts out with the fun spirited tussle in the middle of the floor and then the loose limbed step into the beat. Of course the set up before that is great too. Fred had to keep up with her on the acting end and she stayed right there with him for the dance and if it was ever in doubt he would sweep her up and put her right where she needed to be. She hadn't tapped or danced with a partner before him, and he hadn't done any serious acting before her. Anything he lacked on the dramatic or comic end she would erase by turning his awkwardness into charm by simply worshiping him with her eyes or leading him with her lines. He the rhythm, she the timing. It was truly a match made in Hollywood heaven...back when there was one.
The Seeker I'm so glad someone else feels the same way. I absolutely love how you put it, that's exactly how I feel. They complemented each other so perfectly and so naturally that their names will forever be spoken as one.
Your last sentence though, that hit me. Because it's so true. Let's hope for better, finer times.
Very well said!!
pan got a ton of credit. it's astaire who never got the credit he deserved as a choreographer. many people don't even know he was the primary choreographer because he never took credit for himself.
Fred and Ginger were indeed world famous for obvious reasons. My Mom loved this. She saw it at the picture show(as she called it) as a child. I'm 71.
Oh my goodness, when I think about this talent, and what kids could be doing today !!!!
As a former professor of drama who taught basic body movement, stage presense, intro to stage dancing I read this comment and just burst out loud into laughter. But, your correct. He is not great. He is incredible.
@bootsamou This routine was filmed live on a special hardwood floor so the taps were recorded as Ginger and Fred danced together. And the giggles from Ginger are real. Ginger and Fred enjoyed dancing with one another as you can see.
When I was a kid I would stay up late weekends or summer nights just so I could watch the late late show with Fred and Ginger’s movies. 😊❤️
Anybody else notice they did this in ONE take? No editing, just pure perfection.
Pure perfection and sheer joy from start to fininsh.
God bless these two forever.
My friend and his wife learned this routine for their anniversary. It was so cute.
I wish more movies had talented people like Fred and Ginger.
Fred had some great dancing partners in his career. I especially love Ginger being his partner. They were fantastic together. Good times from a wonderful era
These two will enchant forever.
If the black legend around these two that said they couldn't really stand each other is true, they must have been the best actors ever, cause I've never seen anyone have more fun on screen.
Both of them had great personalities which added to their style and grace, elegance, sense of fun and their limitless talent… It all adds up to a joy to watch!
I can never get tired of watching these two! 😍😍🥰🥰❤️❤️👍 This looks so natural as it's some rehersal ,some behind the scene thing. You know actors enjoying some time before the real shoot starts.
Dang....There’s actually someone who can keep up with Fred! 😝And she does it in heels! Respect! 😘Also, they seem to be genuinely enjoy it! 😍What a pair....Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers will be eternal great pairing! 👍
they dance like they're reading each other's minds
Love how they casually move from dialogue to dance routine seamlessly!
what a joy to watch this elegance, rhythm and beauty, on contrast to the current declined culture that we call (falsely) civilization.
Thank you for posting these jewels of Ginger Rodgers and Fred Astaire 🙏🏽😇🙏🏽😇
They extend less effort dancing than I do walking. I gotta remember to close my mouth when watching them.
Grew up watching this great couple.
This might be the only routine they recorded live with their actual taps, which I'm glad they did because Ginger's laugh in the middle is priceless.
This dance made me happier than I've been in weeks.
Simply the best who ever graced the screen.
Denise fisher hello 👋
How are you doing
I absolutely love these old dancing movies.
What I like most about Ginger is that she may not be as technically superb as Eleanor Powell or other divas but she danced with careless fun and it becomes effortless and natural like breathing. She's not trying "to dance" but her subtle moves become the dance itself.
The loveliest moments in this charming dance are when Ginger laughs out loud with the joy of it all (particularly around 2:11). I agree with your comment. Powell, Cyd Charisse, Ann Miller, Rita Hayworth all could be spectacular ... but Ginger, like Astaire, expressed more than just rhythm and precision. She was sublime.
yes, yet she was technically superb as well here.
Ginger also dances with her face. Vera-Ellen would glue the same blank smile to her face the whole time she was dancing and never looked Fred in the eyes.
Oh yes... she is so natural, there is the girl next door feel in her
1m6 Oh! I wouldn’t mind it a bit if I wasn’t “technically superb”, like Ginger!
So relaxed when they dance they make it look effortless 🙂
Done in one take.....amazing.
She is so good at this and they are a pleasure to watch.
has anyone noticed at 1:04 Ginger gave Fred a 'annoyed' pouty look? So cute! I love how everything here is so candid! The giggles and little shouts they both give are TOOO adorable!!!
This is my favorite performance by them. Pure magic. She giggles spontaneously a few times, which is charming, especially given how much they rehearsed this - they seemed to be having a lot of fun.
I live Astaire and Rogers together, such a sense of fun and innocence, pure joy!
One of those scenes so wholesome it just lifts u up!
Wow, one camera no cuts. So impressive.
Pure magic!
It’s amazing that all of their dances were filmed in one long take. I’m so glad that I was able to watch these growing up. Thanks. :)
One of my favorite of their perfect dance numbers from their RKO movies
Holy hell...freaks of nature, both of 'em! What's best about this to me is that, not only is it just unbelievable skill, but they both look like they're having so much FUN. You can even see and hear them laughing some of the time. The definition of classic.
