The oil filled shocks are an absolute game changer on these little HBX trucks, they are a lot more stable, even on very rough ground.
Agreed! That's why I made this video
I just put the oil filled shocks on my HBX Rampage, along with the metal driveshafts, handles and jumps much better. Now it’s time for me to get a bigger truck.
Just got mine last weekend and man do they make a huge difference.....it’s a whole different truck! Can’t beat this little setup for under $100
Totally agree! Great truck and must-do upgrade. Do you have any range issues?
Have not had any range issues as others have reported....I’ve driven a pretty good distance out at the local hobby park!
@@slomango7927 that's great news!
Excellent upgrade Ryan! 👍
Thank you friend!!!
Nice upgrade Ryan.
It sure is. Thanks for watching!!
Nice truck, btw Luke your garage
Hey Ryan see that new redcat kaiju that's coming out? Looks pretty good! Also great review! I like this. I might grab one to have a little basher to really get dirty and beat on lol. I'll use your link if I do! 👌🍻
Thanks so much and you'll love it! Use the link in the description and it's only $66. Add shocks for $14.
Wow very nice 😊
What tyre upgrade would you recommend for this? And a motor upgrade recommendation? Would a surpass hobby 2435/4500kv work? And any idea whats the diameter of the shaft of the stock motor?
I’ve just got this one the other day and now I’ve discovered they have the 16889a pro with all the upgrades installed anyway 🙈🙂
Yep they sure do. That came out after I made this video. It may be cheaper still to get this one and buy these oil filled shocks because the A version can be quite a bit more expensive.
Great upgrade Ryan, you will like that dumbo controller when you get it all installed.
Yeah, I'm going to try and install that next week.
@@RDsRCReviews have you installed it and could you let us know how it works! You need beside TX/RX also new ESC, right? Which ESC you use?
@@joergone1184 no, I wasn't able to install it because of the esc plugs not fitting the motor I had.
@@RDsRCReviews ok, which ESC you wanted to use? Was there no possibility to solder the plugs newly?
@@joergone1184 I just was going to use an old esc out of my FS Racing Truck that is broken. Yes, you could cut and solder them. I just didn't want to mess with doing that.
Those shocks will work on the q90X series of trucks.
Great super cheap upgrade.
Yes and makes a big difference!
Nice, i buy it to. Just wait🖖
What hex size the wheels?
Hello, what is the length of the schocks please? Does a 80mm shocks will fit ? Thank you
Great upgrade I'm still waiting on my truck to come in been tracking it's on the way but with all this other stuff going on about this virus things it's going to be a while I plan too get shocks later on after I receive it all ready got two lipo battery for it there been here just going have too wait on vehicle you take care of your self and family will talk with you later Mike holden out of North Carolina said that
Thanks Mike! You too!!
My 70 mm shocks did not come with metal inserts only on bottom can i take the metel inserts out of the regular shocks and put my oil filled shocks on came with oil in them got mine in red great video as all ways keep the great work up Mike holden out of North Carolina said that
I'm not sure, you'll just have to give it a try.
Hey dude, I have this truck too. I've been driving it for a month now. And I agree with the range with the stock remote system. The range is terrible to be honest. So I'm really interested to see you upgrade that.
For the time being I'm using my old HBX Ground Crusher TX with no range issues.
I'm uncertain:
between the two which would you choose?
HBX 16889 RC Car @ or Xinlehong Q901 RC Car @?
They cost double right now, 13eur the pair so 26eur for the upgrade is not cheap anymore because if you had that to the 86eur they cost, becomes close to other options with already oil shocks stock. Nevertheless is my first Hobbie grade rc and couldn't be happier. Fun indoor or outdoor in almost any terrain available.
Maybe to stop it from flipping is healing maybe you should do is either heavier or softer oil. I don't know. What's after or make it slip or maybe heavier oil.
Shocks seem good to me. Just the right amount of dampening so I don't think different weight oil will make much of a difference. It flips because it is small and fast. Easy to rollover.
Informative vid! Does the shocks came already oil filled? If not what oil weight did you used? Newbie here!
Yes I believe these ones came prefilled
RD's Drone Reviews
Yes?
RD's Drone Reviews I like that, no comment. The user name is sub to me😂
I saw another CZcams Video with this truck running on 3s with the stock esc, is this right?I have one on order, will be arriving soon.I would try 3s but want to be very sure first that the esc can handle a 3 s Lipo? Should be a great truck, I will have to build a ramp!
Rob
It is an amazing truck. I have no doubt you saw it run on 3s but how long will that work before it burns up the ESC/RX combo? If you're going to try it I suggest adding a cooling fan to the ESC.
Do not use a 3s lipo with a rating that is above 25C or say good bye to your Car
HI
what oil mixture number you added to the shock absorbers
and what brand?
Just some old Tamiya soft oil. No clue what weight that is.
Hi, you mentioned that the SG 1602 is the same truck / has the same chassis. There is also an HBX 16890. This looks very similiar to the SG 1602. So I assume the 1602 and the 16890 are identical?
To be honest I'm not sure most likely it is very similar.
So I added the oil filled shocks on mine. Noticing the rear sits low.
and "return" travel not quick. All shock adjusters at very top springs
fully extended and installed in same holes as yours. I realize turning them down should put them in a more
compressed travel. I have not opened these to check "oil" status. Seems
like there not performing as intended? Suggestions??
Check the oil level and move the tensioner lower.
Yup - oil level "seems" good. I did turn adjuster all the way down and it did level it out a bit. Curious why mine needs that much adj. while from what I see on others posts seem to be fully all the way up? Also, what type oil should I decide to add?
@@MrGlobaldave1 try a thinner oil maybe. It isn't uncommon for the rear shocks to sit lower.
Hello. Im looking at different oil shock options for the 16889 I am going to buy and have a question. On the Banggood page it lists these as Overall length is 70mm,hole diameter is 0.8mm, but your video says any 80mm should work. Just wanted to verify the end to end length and hole to hole of those if possible. Thank you
I believe it is 80 but now I'm not certain. I can't remember lol. Just get the ones from the link in the description so you know they'll fit. 😏
@@RDsRCReviews Thanks. I was tying to avoid ordering from China due to the wait. I found several ones on Amazon that might work if I knew the specs. Thank you
@@Custnam don't blame you. Just order the same length as the BG listing. EBay will have more than Amazon and will be cheaper but won't ship as fast.
This or the Xinlehong q903?
I think the q903 has a little better components already made of steel.
What you think I should go for?
Yeah the Q903 is better and has much better range.
RD's Drone Reviews good to hear! Thx for your reply
I ordered the q901 which should be the exact same car except the body. Also ordered the oil shocks from xinlehong!
What times do you get out of the battery?
I know the Tamaya oilfield checks would be more expensive but they come in 75 mL. You think that would work for that?
I believe so. I've used them before though I think that aluminium ones as better than the DIY plastic Tamiya oil filled shocks.
@@RDsRCReviews I know you have to put them together, but tonight also has aluminum shocks.
@@bradkalman2353 I love Tamiya! Just can't see any reason to spend 3x as much on the Tamiya shocks especially for this inexpensive truck.
Do all the HPA axis oilfield dampers come with oil in them. Even for the 1/18 scales?
HPA? Do you mean HBX? These upgrades come with oil in them yes. The Tamiya ones though have to be assembled and oil added. I prefer these preassembled ones that come with oil already in them.
@@RDsRCReviews what type of oil would you recommend for these ? I mean the thickness/density ? Thanks in advance 🤙
@@shred__dad I honestly don't have a clue as I was never good at knowing that stuff. These came prefilled with oil I believe.
@@RDsRCReviews thanks for the reply. Well i guess it will be tesring different oils to score the sweet spot. Orderded 2 sets of these as well for my wifes hbx and sons sg1601 🤣 they love how bashable these 2 little monsters are :D
@@shred__dad did you use the link on the description? They are really cheap from BG. Also, I've used the Tamiya soft oil with good success though I'm uncertain what the weight of that oil is. Please keep me updated as to what you find out!
New to the hobby... Just got the hbx :) What oil would you recommend for these shocks?
I'm not really sure what weight tbh. I just used some old Tamiya shock soft oil.
Thanks anyway! I guess I'll try a random one first haha
@@BukBukLao22 ask at a local hobby shop. They should know.
Hi! I have seen on reddit that the HBX model in this video has compatible shocks with the Blackzon slyder 1/16 MT. Is it true? Thanks!
Unfortunately I have no idea. Sorry
Hey looking to confirm this too. Did you find out?
@@przemekp8137sorry I wasn't able to confirm and just wend with the original shocks. I didn't risk buying it and not using them if they're incompatible. Really sorry
Hi can i know which oild is recommended for these shocks?
I honestly have no clue but you can use different weights.
Do you think that metal gears are a great upgrade?
Metal gears are always better. I guess the stock gears are nylon? I thought they were already metal.
does it help with wheelie on takeoff?
No not really
How do you put oil in these shocks?
You unscrew the top of the shock and add oil lol
I have the brushless motor and I want to change the stock tires-wheels it's too hard can you please tell me what tires can I try?
I'm not sure the size and I don't have the truck with my right now to check because we we moving. I'm sorry.
@@RDsRCReviews thanks for your quick response I wish you all the best
@@chrismous29 I'm sorry.I wasn't of any help. My friend David over at PerthWestOZRC has this truck and shows a lot of wheel swaps so if you go comment on one of his videos he'll likely be able to help. Just tell him I sent you.
@@RDsRCReviews thanks a lot sure i will
For some reason after i upgraded the shocks the truck doesn’t stay straight it’s annoying to drive smh the steering servo gets stuck alittle when i turn it wont center back to normal it stays turned alittle bit i just got the Smax brushless 2 days ago and i love it way better then the 16889 in my opinion stays straight doesn’t run hot on 3s either also waiting on my Traxxas 4tec 2.0 😀
Maybe it needs a better steering servo. My oil filled shocks tend to make the truck sag in the back. I have the smax also and I find it to be a bit bouncy and I hate the big bulky controller.
@@RDsRCReviews u have the stock servo in your 16889?
@@TheK20eg yes!
@@RDsRCReviews oh ok
Do you know if the 16889A has better range now than these ones have?
Not everyone has as bad of range as I did but as far as I know they are still using the same transmitter.
@@RDsRCReviews Oh well, we all know if we want the best upgrade range-wise, the Dumbo TX/RX combos are the best, but then again you have to get a seperate ESC as well. 😢
@@philiprccars4340 agreed! I have 3 Dumbos
@@RDsRCReviews SOmething very strange happened to me a while ago, I tried inproving the range of a RC car by making the RX wire longer, it had the Opposite effect, the range got Worse?!!!
@@philiprccars4340 that is bizarre! What you did should have helped. I use my Ground Crusher TX and it works great with no range issues.
Length of oil filled shocks, as im looking to fit wltoys 1/18 shocks which are 65mm in overall length and 57mm hole to hole as i want my truck sitting lower.
Pretty sure they are 70mm. 65mm should work
@@RDsRCReviews thankyou
@@RDsRCReviews i find the car too unstable for how i run it as i run this peppy little truck on 3s n the stock suspension has a travel of around 15mm so if i put a thicker oil in the my new shocks it shudnt bottom out to often. Though with it been a small truck i use it more on light gravel. Its the only rc i currently own as i want one of each scale going larger from what im at currently. Im going for an ftx comet after ive finished this project. N that will require a brushless setup can you recommend a suitable motor size for a 1/12 scale. I dont a 1/14 as its not my cup of tea. I sold my wltoys 144001 it was too small.
I should have mentioned the shock length in this video. Major oversight on my end. I just looked at the oil filled shock lifting and they are indeed 70mm. Crazy good deal for $7 a pair.
@@RDsRCReviews im autistic i do my research but thinking mathematically n scientifically lowering my cars centre of gravity will improve cornering speeds n stop it flipping so easily lol
i want to put some 1/14 shocks on this truck from the wltoys 14401 does any one know if they will fit ?
Good question. I think they will likely be a bit too big though.
@@RDsRCReviews been thinking that myself i’ll probably cut some tubing to lower them or maybe just buy some 50wt oil thx for the fast reply
@@burn1gotbeats why not just buy the shocks I used in this video? They are dirt cheap.
@@RDsRCReviews i do like them on the front but the rear always kinda drops down after i jump it even with fresh oil do you have any ideas ?😇😎
@@burn1gotbeats mine does that too. Not sure really why.
