Lubricate the spindle bearings on your Lexus LX470 / Toyota Land Cruiser with this DIY tool and you don't have to mess with your wheel bearing preload / lock nuts / lock washer like the Slee tool. This is fast, easy and fully lubricates the spindle bearing. Total cost for the tool is under $3 USD.
Parts Required:
1" PVC Cap - Slip joint style - $1.49 USD
Threaded Zerk Fitting - Metric M6x1.0 - ~$1.00 USD

Be sure to pay attention to the threads on your grease fitting and purchase the appropriate tap for your fitting. They come in metric, standard, different pitches, and diameters too.
Used this tool this weekend. Worked great! Only issue i has was getting the gun off the zerk without ripping it out of the pvc. The makeshift tool lasted long enough to do both spindles, hoorah! Great hack man.
Thanks! The grease gun tip turns, to lock onto the grease fitting, and turn it the other way to loose the tip and then it will come off the fitting without having to rip it off with force.

Thanks for this video - I have these parts on order to make this tool! I just did my wheel bearings and races this weekend and put it all back together apart from the flange so I can do this. That view where you get grease out of the back of the spindle - is it necessary to separate the CV from the back of the spindle (and if so what's the best way to separate it?) or can I do it without that step? Also what grease did you use? (I just used Mobil 1 synthetic for the wheel bearings).
when you remove the c clip and flange from the hub the cv axle will move around in the spindle, there are no extra steps to separate the cv/spindle. I forget the grease I used at the time, i think it was timkin red wheel bearing grease but not sure.
@@lillyautomotive thanks! I figured it out in the end, altho I didn't get the best deal with the end of the spindle I managed to get grease in there! Also managed to make the tool without the taps, with the right sized hole I could self tap the zerk fitting. Thanks again!
I know this is a old video but seems very useful. I'm about to replace the rotors and the bearings and will do this hack also. Just one question: What do you do to the grease pushed out of the back of the spindle? Clean it up or just leave it there?
Thank you for the kind words and glad you found the video helpful. I wouldn't worry about the excess grease, but you can wipe it up if its accessible.
I'm so glad we bought our trucks at about the same time! LOL. I do have a question concerning your DIY though, what was the process before you greased it? Was it dry already? Or was there grease there and you got it out?
this video just covers maintenance re-greasing of the spindle bearing. The bearing was not replaced, and already had existing grease in there. You will push out some existing grease in the bearing with this method, and deposit fresh uncontaminated grease in its place. This should be done every 30k or so, unless you do alot of water crossings from offroading, then id consider doing it on an annual basis.
Is this intended to be able to grease the brass spindle bushing without having to pull everything apart?

The grease is not getting to the actual bearings. it looks like all that's happening is the axle shaft is being pushed back and grease coming out of the opening for the axle. The bearings are on the outside of the spindle. Am i wrong?
BeginnersLuckGarage the spindle bearing is a needle bearing that the CV axle spins on inside the of the spindle and requires re-lubrication / maintenance. If you look at an exploded parts diagram you will see what I'm describing. Slee sells a tool to do this that costs $80 and requires you to undo the wheel bearing jam nut / preload. This tool avoids all of that and costs $3. The wheel bearing is on the outside of the spindle and is not greased with this method (nor does the slee tool do this).

I've watched most your stuff too. Id be looking for at min one globe and a shock/ram, at most a front globe, rear globe, one front shock and one rear shock.

What does the PVC end "seal" to? The lock nut?
Yes it seals to the face of the lock nut. Theres not much pressure required to force the grease thru the needle bearing so grease wont push past the face of the pvc fitting.

I just got my knuckle on and thought I greased that bearing pretty good, but would like to grease it some more. I Have the PVC ends. Getting ready to assemble the hub and bearings tomorrow, but would really like to grease this before I get the discs and hub on really just to be clean about it. How would I hold the PVC end without the rotors and hub on? I have the old locknuts, etc, just wantr to fill the spindle up before I put the hubs and rotors on. Any way to do that?
@@lesgarten you can try putting on a lock nut on the naked hub and using a tie down strap or long zip tie wrapped around the hub to clamp the PVC fitting down, or just wait until the front end is reassembled if it's not working out. You may also be able to find a plastic fitting that you can force thread on to the hub like the slee tool but i haven't tried that.
Got exact parts, clamped it down and grease comes out of lip of pvc cap and doesn’t go all the way to back. Even used a ratchet strap to add more pressure.
What could be wrong?
Did you undo the snap ring and push the axle back? Make sure the rim of the PVC cap is smooth and flat, it's the "sealing surface"
Yeah definitely need to be really choosy when you go to buy PVC caps I noticed that several of them had inconsistencies in the molding where small lips had formed around the edge of the casting. Made sure to find one that was relatively flat so it would seal nicely against the end of the spindle/locknut
If you have an 80s pickup with this problem, this method does not work.
