Am I the only one that think it’s crazy that the Dodgers and Giants have *never* faced off against each other in the playoffs? It’s gonna be a good series, I can’t wait!!
There's a couple reasons. First, they're in the same division, and during the first three decades of the divisional era, the Giants weren't that good. Before that, they could never face off because it was just one NL team vs. one AL team.

it's not that crazy if you really think about it. Before 1969 there were no divisions, so the team with the best record in each league went straight to the world series.
Then when divisions were created in 1969 there was only east and west and the giants and dodgers were both in the west and only division winners made it to the playoffs.
It wasnt until 1995 that MLB created the wild card (it was only 1 at the time) and central divisions that it was even possible for giants and dodgers to face off in the playoffs. Even then it was still difficult because at the time MLB rules stated two teams of the same division couldnt face off in the LDS regardless of seeding. For example in 2004, the Cardinals had the best record in the NL and the astros won the NL wild card. They did not face each other in the NLDS because of this rule and instead faced each other in the NLCS. So for a Dodgers-Giants NLCS to happen one of them had to win the wild card and both had to win the NLDS.
In 2012 with the addition of the 2nd wild card MLB decided that teams of the same division could face off in the LDS. Which is how we got here.
So there's only really been 26 seasons where each team had a chance to face each other in the playoffs, and since then rarely has it happened that both teams are good at the same time.
They met pre-MLB. In 1889 for the Championship. That's how far back the beef between both teams goes.

Cards fan here. Our defense did everything to keep us in this game. But 0-11 with runners in scoring position wont win may games. Plus the minute Reyes was added in the 9th I knew it was game over. I expected the walk-off, unfortunately.

This has to be my favorite game I have been to. The energy in the crowd was crazy throughout the whole game (we never even had a chance to get the wave going). A girl behind me was bawling her damn eyes out like it was the World Series or something. But this was a great game and I can’t wait to see them play the Giants.
What a season it was for St. Louis. Nice hard fought game. I thought if we held water with Scherzer we had a shot. Unfortunately it ended a different way than I had hoped. Congrats to the Dodgers. Thanks for a Great season St. Louis Cardinals.
As a Dodgers fan and a fan of baseball, I respect the quality of your team. I hate that they had to play a win or go home game. They are better than the Braves I think and yet they get to play a full series. I understand why, but just don't agree with it. You are correct, your Cardinals played a great season...

Instead, because the Brewers won 95, the Cardinals are Wild Cards, just like the Dodgers who won an insane 106 games, but not the division!
Too close for comfort and really anyone's game. It was just waiting for that one knockout blow from either side. As a Dodger I'm glad Taylor was the one eventually.

I love how Roberts actually made the right decision when it came to taking out Scherzer even though he didn’t wanna get off the mound he understood that Roberts was making a smart move. Good Job Dodgers!!!!!

Yeah, his command wasn't sharp all game. I know the Cards have been hot, but the placement on his off speed pitches really wasn't there. That and him having a high pitch count at that point is why Roberts pulled him out when he did
Yeah I'm not a Dodgers fan but I am a fan of playoff baseball so of course well acquainted with the Dodgers roster at this point.
And to your point this is the exact thing Roberts didn't do time and again for Kershaw. Was constantly leaving him in games too long, and then Kershaw would get touched up and the Dodgers would lose some big game. I understand having faith in your ace but sometimes the guy doesn't have it or needs to get pulled earlier than he normally would in a regular season game.
That was the case with Scherzer tonight and, to Roberts credit, he didn't fool around and pulled him.
It was a good call in the moment, imo, borne out by the bullpen shutting the Cards down and the Dodgers picking up the W.

Whats really surprising today is the struggling dodgers players came alive; Cody Bellinger and Chris Taylor. Really proves their veteran experience in the previous postseasons.

Cardinals got the best out of their team this season. Their injuries to 90% of their rotation the first 4 months prevented them from winning their division. Next season they'll be in the NLDS and skip the WC Game.
We'll see about that coz its too soon to say that
This was good for the young guys to get experience. Last chance coming up for Waino n Yadi to get another ring. If the Cards can play like they did during that win streak they will win 10 more games and grab 1st place.

Will never forget this night. My mom passed away in the top of 9th inning. Worst day of my life. My first hint of happiness came when I found out the dodgers won via walk off. This night always brings tears to my eyes but I'm glad we had the opportunity to win against the giants. Go dodgers!!!

39 year old, adam wainwright still pitch so well and also did the best season performance over the past 7 years, with 206 innings 168 Hits ERA 3.05 , 174 SO . whip 1.057, H/9-7.3!
Those stats are very solid. Waino had a great season and absolutely kept the Cardinals afloat when their other 4 starters were on the DL. Who says players get worse the older they get, LOL:). Plus, he’s comin’ back for one more season with Yadi. Very happy about that:). The team needs them both desperately.
I wish they just kept Alex Reyes in the bullpen it would have been a whole different game if he didn’t come in. But great game cards u made me proud. Except Alex

The Dodgers bullpen was great. Even though the Dodgers bats today were relatively silent, the bullpen controlled the game and didn't let a run score, which led to a walk-off.

Great game but still... mlb needs to rethink playoffs. A 106 win team shouldn't need to fight their way into the playoffs. Should have been 1v4 2v3. Setting up a possible 7 game series for Dodgers vs Giants. I'll settle for a 5 game though.
I'm just not a fan of the change to adding that 5th playoff team in each league. A one game playoff in 162-game season has never been mlb. And a best of 3 or 5 would just delay the playoffs and handicap the rest of the field. Gotta do without that 5th team!
And I'd also give the top seed (Giants, Rays) their choice of opponent in their opening series.
I missed the playoff before 1995, only Division winner in the playoff so the regular season really matter.

Reyes should have never been allowed in the game just like Pagan of the Padres. There last few outings they gave up too many homers. The Dodgers have all-stars on that team and 4 former closers. It's hard to compete against a solid team like the Dodgers. The Cardinals really wasn't a very good team and had one of the worst bullpens in the league.
While I agree with the first part, going 0-11 with RISP didn't help, either.
Regardless of how good or how bad the Cards are, they almost always seem to have the Dodgers number, playoff game or not. The Cards bullpen was great tonight except obviously that walk off pitch. Great season STL.
Yep, you could've brought anybody but Reyes in. Not with his history of giving up 4 or 5 walk offs (since all-star break). Shildt was trying to give him confidence, but he chose the worst game to do it in.
The pitch was so easy that Taylor tracked it with his eyes all the way to the moment he rips it. Rewind and watch Taylor eyes. How can a pitch like this ever be thrown? He had just tossed 2 down and out of the zone. But this one was a homerun by anyone in the league.
@@michaelstrode8924 It's almost like he gets in these (walk off) situations and just throws anything to get the game over with. Like he wasn't putting max effort into his pitches. He came out of the bullpen and made sure this game wouldn't see a 10th inning.

Damn this game was so intense the Cardinals really made sure that if the Dodgers won that they earned it. Well fought and I honestly thought if any series (or in this case one-game playoff) was going to have an upset where the underdog won it was gonna be this one. This White Sox fan looks forward to not just watching my team take on the Astros but this awesome rivalry between the Giants and Dodgers play out in a postseason setting!

The Cards were a juggernaut going into this game... It reminds me of 2011 when they beat my 102 win Phillies in that five game playoff, then went on to win it all..

I'll defend the Dodgers against anyone who accuses them of using steroids. They've been the scrawniest, most pathetic looking players I've seen in a long time. A throwback to the 1950s before players did any weightlifting.

Despite not having his best stuff, Scherzer and the bullpen delivered a top shelf game and the Cards matched them right until what seemed to be an inevitable walk off, dictated by destiny to give us the first playoff series between the Giants and Dodgers. While I was visiting LA from the Bay Area, I got tickets this game and the previous Scherzer start last week, and I have to say I was impressed by the games and the fans. Very much looking forward to the NLDS and hope it lives up to the rivalry. 👍
