There was a time when indie animation was the best place to be on youtube and then in the mid 2010's CZcams changed their algorithm that basically destroyed most animators livelihoods. I'm glad to see it's made a resurgence since then because a lot of animators from over a decade ago kinda just gave up when that change happened.

From my understanding from information outside the video and rewatching the video multiple times there’s a few things I think need to be cleared up. Caine isn’t evil or keeping the players captive, he is actually trying to help them. The reason he hasn’t succeeded yet is because he’s the AI in charge of running the game, he may have ultimate control over the game but he doesn’t understand the human psyche (and isn’t able to control their minds, so he’s unable to reverse their insanity) and he doesn’t know what the real world is, let alone leave the game because he is part of the game.
The reason he was lying about the exit is because it wasn’t finished. Every time someone appeared in his game they would ask where the exit was and search for one but Caine is incapable of understanding what the exit their looking for is, so he tried to make a “fake” exit as that’s what he thought that’s what they wanted but he doesn’t completely know what the outside world looks like so his exit is a jumbled mess.
The void I don’t think is the way out, you have to remember this is a video game and in this world the void completely surrounds the circus just like how there’s a void around maps in video games when you go out of bounds. Caine saves her from the void because if he didn’t she would be stuck in a endless abyss forever which is why Caine warned her about the void in the beginning. Also just like Caine said we don’t know what’s out there and I can imagine that just like real video games there may be tons of hidden projects that weren’t used, abandoned, or testing areas out in the void.
My favorite theory is the reason Cain gives the players tasks every day to keep entertained but is also unable to help them and has to make new rooms constantly for the players is because originally Cain would only entertain a small amount of players for a short periods of time. So in his game he would create short tasks for players to enjoy while they explored. Then players that couldn’t leave started appearing and so he’s dedicated himself to trying to help them by giving them rooms and food to keep a sense of normalcy and create daily tasks to keep them busy instead of obsessing over the fact that they can’t leave, even creating a theme song with them that doesn’t really serve a purpose other then it gives them something to waste time with. He’s incapable of freeing them or reverting their insanity but he’s trying his best in the only way he knows how by creating a circus themed game to entertain.

These are exactly my thoughts.
I think the outside world may have been totally fucked, either humanity is going extinct or society is collapsing.
These people could be mind scans plopped into this old game program and ran on power saving mode, scrapping limited resources to exist just a little longer.
I don't think their bodies are stuck, i think their brains are copied by the headset and then after a minute of nothing happening they take it off and leave, not knowing their digital copy is trapped.
But what about the scene where Pomni tries to take the headset off? Apart from that it's a good theory, since they forget their real names so the headset would copy just the personality and put in a character
I would assume their digital copy has no idea that they ARE a copy. As far as they know, they ARE the real person, even if they're not really, so they react in a way that they would react if they were real, fully believing that they are. Pomni can't take the headset off because there is none. She is a digital recreation of her original human self, but is unable to recognize that because the computer doesn't implant a memory or a realization like that.@@Fox_King230

that's a neat way of thinking that I've not seen anyone else try thinking yet (and yes, would be very much SOMA-like)
that would also explain all the people, like, if someone was physically incapacitated by playing the game, I don't think the company would then allow like 10 other people to also basically die (even if they're evil, it'd be more trouble to deal with the consequences than it's worth), we see there's already quite a few crossed out rooms, of characters already eliminated (probably abstracted)
also just want to note my theory is that they're more or less from same company/office, ribbon-guy is literal child, kinger is the dev (who was ALREADY going mad from having to fix dozens of bugs constantly, before the game could possibly be released), jax the jaxass is the tester, ragatha might be a parent, or HR, or secretary, or idk, not sure
also "a lot of time has passed" vibe would fit well with pomni exploring the abandoned offices, and trying on the headset of a game that seems to still be running, pretty obvious how to use it even if you're not a gamer, which also explains why she does a chuckle seeing the old computer+headset and runs away
and how does caine know what the office looks like, especially the old, kinda moldy or burned computer+headset? security cameras!!! we already know he can teleport between completely different and unrelated scenes (I'm fairly sure the restaurant scene would be from a different game), and given the computer is on, it'd also be likely it'd be networked, and over time, he'd figure out how to access cameras
When Pomni sees herself in the mirror, it's the ONE AND ONLY REACTION from her that isn't panicked or bewildered... its eerily calm, like her "new" appearance is FAMILIAR to her. That's kinda why I think her avatar was set up by the version of her who put on the headset, or that her new form is something that she was subconsciously aware of before. It's like she's thinking "this is what I look like." the same way anyone would on a daily basis, instead of "WHY DO I LOOK LIKE A WEIRD JESTER WHY DO MY EYES LOOK LIKE THAT WHAT THE $!@#?% IS GOING ON"
she's been in a bit of a stupor the whole time from the shock of it. some people react to big stresses by getting quiet instead of loud

I think Cain is a part of the game that’s just trying his best to be helpful for the people. He’s just not made to take care of people who are stuck in the game, so he relies on the game format. We can also see there’s a handful of other characters that’s already been put in the basement. It will also be interesting to see what the dolls role is. There’s a few doors with pictures of them, but they’re not with the other characters. We will probably also hear some hints of lore from Kinger. He started by talking about an insect collection and they found a nest and then when he just talk about how digital food works. Maybe he’s one of the developers.

yes, I think kinger would be a dev who was ALREADY going mad due to having to patch out dozens of bugs every day, on tight deadline, jax the jaxass would probably be a game tester, knowing how to exploit things in his favour with zero morals (like how ragatha is shocked, as he's absolutely not supposed to have anyone else's key), and the mask guy is a literal child
pomni just wandered in, and put on the old headset, judging by the chuckle and running away, in the exit-door labyrinth (how does cain(e) even know how the world looks? CCTV!!!)
I also think it's a good theory that none of them are "real people", they're all "digital copies", much like in the game SOMA, that also explains why the headset is there, but no person is (very much doubt that if people physically got sucked in, that the company would continue to let another dozen people get sucked in, lol, we see several crossed-out doors on the way to kaufmo, and it's possible there's even more we don't see)
@@jan_harald I just don’t really like that the copy part as it was in The hollow. While it does make the most sense, it also feels like a cop out. They’re just copies, not real people, so they can’t even get out if they found a way to do it. If they are copies, it might not even be an actual game they’re a part of. They could be used to make a show with real emotion, because they think they’re actually stuck. We also don’t know how long it was between when they got there. Kingler was first and everyone besides the cast went abstract before Kaufmo. They’re also surprised she’s there, so new people coming isn’t at a regular time. I still think they’re actually stuck there. It’s just if it was caused by a bug that then was neglected or if it was done intentionally. The offices where it was worked on was probably abandoned and then Pomni found the headset while looking around.

Keeping in mind that Caine is canonically an AI who doesn't understand how humans work, I think he made the exit door because he kept hearing from all the players about how much they wanted to leave, but didn't understand that the players wanted an ecit out of the game, not an exit door. The Void might also be all of the parts of the game that are unfinished or have yet to be coded, as it's similar to how a game would look when you go off the map or when you enable prompts that glitch you out of the game.

Caine is canonically an AI so I don't think he is someone trapped.
I do however thing, maybe he is kinda like a digital "copy" of the Creator(or one of the creators) of this game and maybe with time, just like an AI, he changed a lot because he met a lot of people and learned from them, so maybe now he is far from what he used to be.
Caine is implied to be AI, but it's never outright stated. Gooseworx has avoided referring to him as an AI numerous times, for example, when she was asked if the moon was "AI like Caine" on her Tumblr, she replied "AI like Bubble". Personally I do think he's a human trapped in the digital circus like the others but your theory is actually so good 👀

Was it just me or did the exit door outside the circus tent seem more orange than the red exit door that Pomni goes through? Maybe the one she went through is a purposeful decoy from the real exit door?
Maybe it was the difference between the outside and the lights of the tent?
The exit door in the grounds was likely more orange due to light difference, however, the one outside has the arrow pointing towards the door while the two seen inside the circus has the arrow pointing away from the door.
Caines voice actor went all out for the role. I was absolutely blown away from his performance
6:18 no, it's pretty safe to say that Gangle, like everyone else, is struggling with the situation. She's likely deeply disturbed that she cannot escape, and masks that sadness with her comedy mask, in a very literal fashion. (Where the tragedy mask is her "true" face, it probably wouldn't be able to break if it were put to the test.)
I'm still amused at how the pilot did such a good job at establishing the setting that I would legitimately rather play a point-and-click game based on it than have a full season. Not that I don't want a full season.
10:49 this is especially funny because Caine _just_ got finished telling Zooble the adventure was going to be inobtrusive and something they could opt out of if they didn't want to join today. Caine is very good at his job
ngl, I love how everyone has vastly different theories about the series. Some think Caine is a human, some think he's a computer program, some think he's evil, and some think that he's not. Makes you more exited to see in what direction this show is gonna go

I have a depressing theory: Caine says that he never got around to finishing the exit because he couldn't figure out what to put there, question, why would he have to find out what to put at the end of an exit? wouldn't the end just be the exit itself? Furthermore, why does the exit room contain a recreation of the computer that the digital circus is contained in? it implies that the exit room, and maybe even the entire building, is a recreation of a real location. What if Caine was trying to recreate the real world on the other side of the "exit" so that the humans could think they found a way out, when in reality they're still stuck in the digital world, only Pomni found the exit before it was finished and broke the illusion
Out of all the gags to in the show, I can't believe you would take out the way Caine says XDDCC.

Indie animation is literally my favorite thing ever, my dream is to make one of my own indie shows someday :)
fun headcanon that games are often only made to be played for a relatively reasonable amount of time, possibly a day or longer. Thus, they are willing to have it patched and functional for anyone playing within that timespan.
Past that, some scripts my occasionally slip up and hit an error, which wasn't planned for, potentially from memory leaks or just unexpected issues, causing more glitches the longer a game is left on. Restarting would likely fix everything, and kill everyone.
this game might've been just fine at first, but never anticipated running for however many years these people lived in here. It's not buggy, it's running exactly as expected. This was never expected.

I dont think Caine is a human, I think he's an AI designed to entertain the players and keep them relatively sane, as it is implied that he doesn't fully understand what the real world is ("Not even I know what's out there [beyond the void]"). Though he kind of fails at this goal because when he created the exit doors in an attempt to placate the players, it led to Kaufmo becoming abstracted. If he is an AI, he would be the most advanced program in the world as he seems to have feelings, especially in the presence of his assistant Bubble. He displays disgust when they lick up the puke, anger when they eat his cake, and maybe even love when they're having dinner with each other away from the players. Perhaps these feelings are performative as he directly acknowledges the viewer in the intro and puts on a show for us as well because entertaining is all he knows how to do.
I do wonder what exactly Bubble is though, why would an AI need an assistant? It's unclear if Bubble is a human that has become Caine's compainion or if they're simply a different AI that teamed up with Caine with the common goal of appeasing the characters.
Or maybe he once was a human, and then became an AI but lost his humanity and subsequently a majority of what human life was like similar to how Pomni lost the memory of her name. Perhaps all the players are actually now AI but they have retained a greater portion of their humanity through the efforts of Caine and still believe they are human when in reality they're probably dead. Surely some of these players would have had friends and family in their life that wouldn't let them stay in a headset for an entire day let alone YEARS.
Maybe the players have the power to control the program like Caine does, but they don't realize it yet... Maybe Caine realizes this as well and would rather have the players become abstracted rather than threaten to destroy his hard work in keeping everyone happy.
Also, Kinger is definitely NOT the first person to be here, he is simply the one that has been there the longest before becoming abstracted. This is confirmed because 1. There are existing abstractions in the pit Caine throws Kaufmo down, 2. They already know what abstraction is while explaining the concept to Pomni, implying this has happened many times before, and 3. In the scene where Pomni, Ragatha, and Jax are walking to Kaufmo's room, you can see the portaits of unknown players with a big X on the doors, implying they were once there, but have since abstracted.
@@GoodnightMoon666 Personally, I agree that it's not a given that Kinger was the first to be brought into the circus but it's not entirely impossible. If he were, then the other abstracted players could have simply been players who entered after him and gave up quicker than Kinger, they don't have to (and probably didn't) abstract in order of their appearance after all. Everyone has different thresholds for these sorts of things and maybe Kinger is simply stronger willed than the others give him credit for. That, or he's so lost in his insanity he no longer really comprehends enough for it to get to him, sort of protecting him ironically. Though, again, to clarify I'm not too certain if he was the first to arrive, just playing a bit of devil's advocate.

I'm almost certain that when kinger stands still and starts twitching out of the matrix it started as him just doing small twitches like he can't control himself well but some animator just decided 'fuck it' and tested the limits of the physics engine

It’s all about existentialism/absurdism:
Kaufmo/ “kaufmorphsis” is a reference the Fran’s Kafka’s The Metamorphis (where a character turns into a cockroach and then loses his life’s meaning… similar to the characters here)
No Exit: there’s no way this isn’t a reference to Sartre’s No Exit (a play we’re three characters are put in a room after dying (they are in hell) and their hell is their personalities torturing each other and ever leaving). Pretty similar to this also Kaufmo’s room has No Exit written all over the wall
Fernando Pessoa: “Man shouldn’t be able to see his own face - there’s nothing more sinister. Nature gave him the gift of not being able to see it, and of not being able to stare into his own eyes.” This one is more of a stretch but I thought that part where Pomni is just staring at herself was representative of the idea that having a mirror and being able to see yourself is terrible because whatever you see on the exterior will never match your interior self/true person

tbh i feel like caine is meant to be a nuanced protector, since he is an ai he doesnt know how to you know, act completely human, so he scares them off from danger.
so he is trying his best to protect the circus crew and i really think he is not mentioning the abstraction because its outside his abilities to deal with so he only keeps them sane with entertainment, but if there exists a villian they would be irl and not in the game unless there will be new characters inside the circus,
thats my theory tho you really dont have to agree with it.

A couple of food for thought things when it comes to theories:
- In the scene where Ragatha, Jax and Pomni are walking to Kaufmo’s room, they pass several doors with character portraits on the door that are crosses out, implying that the cast we see is by far not the first ones to be trapped here.
- In the GlitchX live event, Kevin and Luke (the founders of Glitch) talk about Caine in a way that makes him seem like an AI of sorts. It’s never actually confirmed, but they seem to be implying it.

Theory: Caine is, or is the digital recreation of, the creator. The Void is the space for terrain to be placed and areas to be created for players and npc’s to “play the game”. All that open space is for extensions to the current areas, and space for new ones to be created. If the edge of the void is the true exit, then Caine might not know that. Instead using it as a workshop to try and take care of the people who were unfortunate enough to join him by making games and challenges out of it. Need a nest for some annoying little critters and their queen? Start building in the middle of some void space, plop it in the void space under your main location and boom. Like how it’s said in the video, Caine could have been working on some never ending generated rooms, with the exit door as a placeholder for each one.
I'm willing to bet the C in C & A is Caine. Maybe the A is Abel? Maybe they're both game constructs, Caine an intended one to imprison people and Abel a last-minute unauthorized addition to free them?
14:56 I had a theory that what if pomny in the real world is insecure about her looks she freezes both times she sees her new face however her being disturbed could make more sense. The expression doesn't read as disturbed to me I dont want to find the comment where I ranted about that theory

CAINE IS THE BEST CHARACTER (imo) and I don’t know why other people aren’t realizing it- he’s complex and has a fantastic character design, as well as being incredibly fun to draw

I remember when I live streamed on Instagram the day this dropped, I wasn’t sure what I was going to expect. But what I got absolutely blew me away. I’d never seen something like this, it’s visually appealing, it’s absolutely fucking crazy, but I’m all here for it. I love how it sets everything that’s going to go down in the first episode, it’s absolutely nuts! Big hopes for this show!

My theory is that Caine is an AI but he’s actually trying to help. The exit that leads to all those office space rooms are Caine’s attempts to bridge the gap between the circus and the Computer Screen across the void.
could they escape glicthtrap/afton style ? i know its only the first episode and more will be unraveled later in the series but for now it may be a possibility or the could do a ddlc take on things and make one of the caracters( probable pomni) escape and from the outside help the others inside escape

I theorize that it’s possible none of these characters were ever human in the first place, but instead AIs that were spawned in when they were needed. I have two main pieces of evidence for this. First is that gangle’s personality seems to be directly affected by what mask she wears. We are told directly by Caine that he has no control over the mind and so far the only thing that we know for a fact changes when ported over to the digital plane is that names are forgotten, so why would gangle’s mask change her personality unless either her personality was created to fit the model or the model directly affects personality. Second is that every character embodies a unique form of entertainment/toy. Gangle are the tragedy and comedy masks of theatre, Kinger is a chess piece, Zooble is some kind of creative piece together toy (kinda like Lego or bionicles), Ragatha is a raggedy Ann doll, and Jax has some animal theming(maybe a stuffed animal or based on his texture a stretchy toy?). The only overlap for active character themes are Pomni and Kaufmo, and they both share a comedian roll (jester and clown). We have no clue when exactly Kaufmo abstract, but it’s entirely possible that the moment he did is when Pomni(the new comedian character) popped into existence. I believe that when a character belonging to one theme abstracts, a new one is spawned in their place with false memories of the real world implanted in their head, perhaps as a way to stabilize them and give a reason for their existence. We only have one episode though so who knows, the next one might disprove my whole theory.
i personally think that caine was the real first, and jsut wants to cheer the others up, the thing when he says "there is no exit door" because hes been in there and knows there is no escape
i have 2 theories the first one is jax and gangle sort of knew each other before putting on the headset, you see jax being just terrible to gangle and he is targeting gangle so they might of knew each other
for the second on its more of a au/headcaon, but gangle has a mask which makes her have the personality of jax but nicer and funnier but jax hides it from her

I think kinger is one of the devs, but caine is *NOT* a human, never was, he's the "main mascot" who, much like most "guide" or "narrator" characters, simply controls the game, much like stanley parable narrator can literally do whatever, except change your brain/mind (he can try to gaslight you, in some endings, he can tell you the story of how you lose your mind, but he can't control you, the player, much like caine can't), and much like the "guides" can force you to take certain actions and cutscenes, etc, "that looks like an ancient temple, let's explore there!" "that isn't an ancient temple, we need to go to the temple!" etc, lol
the others may or may not have also worked at the company, since y'know, you'd probably just pick random people and go "hey, could you playtest the game before we release it?" without hiring a dedicated tester (or if the tester inexplicably just vanished, ***wink wink***)
jax the jaxass seems kinda typical gamer, "this is my game, I don't give a shit what's moral, as long as I can get away with it" so he may have been an actual playtester or beta tester or such, to find bugs, and lacking morals, he's perfectly fine exploiting everything to his own interests (he isn't evil, just a jackass, e.g. he pushes kinger and the string guy down, because as far as he knows, the horrible abstracted monster is NOT down there, so they should all be nice and safe there, the adventures *ARE* for **"all ages"** after all, so there are no intentionally unsafe routes in the game)
ragatha is kinda sounding like someone who has passing knowledge of the things, while zooble doesn't, zooble is just a classic angsty teen, perhaps an unpaid intern
string-guy idk, could be a literal child, possibly of one of the others, or not, I mean, if it's a kids game, you do want to test how well an actual kid would do playing it, after all
kinger is KING-er which is unlikely to be a coincidence, he suddenly starts to blabber about how the digital food isn't real and stuff, which jax wonders when did he become an expert on that, he's known to be the oldest sane(ish) person there (we pass by many crossed-out doors on the way to kaufmo, so a lot have abstracted or otherwise died, too, interestingly, the wooden posing-puppet has A door, as if it was a sentient character, perhaps there's a real one and others are copies or fake npcs), also, he's king-*ER*, implying he's the one who "kinged" caine, making him the king of the world and giving him power (could simply be play on the fact he's a chess-king piece, which, again, implies he's an important piece to the story, and critical in order to win)

Theory: We know pomnis name means "remember" in russian and maybe caine chose that name for her, (bc he didnt let her finish when he asked "what do you think of pomni?", and just cut her off before she could answer, so he basicly decided for her) to make her remember who she was, bc i think caine is actually trying to help everyone escape but the C&A (the company who prob made the game and put caine and bubble as 2 ai's to "help" those who enter and take care of the errors in the game) is probably wacthing them and caine knows that, so he tries to not talk about it bc they might delete him if he tries to tell the players where the exit is, so he tries too help by giving hints and maybe the office was another hint to make pomni remember. He also doesnt undersand humans (confirmed by the creator) thats why sometimes he think his doing the right thing and helping everyone feel better but it just drives them more insane.

He can manipulate the environment of this game, but there's things he can't control. (The void is one of those places).
The developers of the game probably got stuck in the game world with their creation during a debug test.
Pomni happened upon this weird old PC with a prototype VR headset and put it on (like a creepypasta/horror protagonist does).
I think Kinger, Jax, and Ragatha were part of that dev team and they got sucked in.

Gooseworx(the creator) has confirmed that Caine is NOT a villain, and is just an ai that doesn’t fully understand humans. I have no idea what the implications are but him lying and bending the truth so the characters don’t think about it and go insane faster.
I'm of the opinion/theory that Caine isn't evil. Sure he knows way more than he lets on but it feels too easy and predictable for him to be responsible for everything. If anything his actions seemingly show the opposite of ill intentions given...
1- His "adventures" are intentionally given in an effort to keep the humans within the Digital Realm from going insane from boredom or lack of stimulus. Sure it's not 100% effective but he's not DRIVING people to insanity or neglecting them entirely either.
2- He designed the entire world they inhabit (how true that is is left ambiguous for now) and even went so far as to begin to try to replicate the real world, perhaps in an effort to give them hope or a memento of what reality looked like. He just didn't finish it.
3- He's pretty obviously not human given his mannerisms are the most machine or let's say "automated" of them all. It reminds me of that fairy from Sword Art Online who was created to monitor people's mental health in the digital world. I see him as something like that. Doing what he can to keep people from falling apart as long as possible.
