I think Ali G in some ways represents on of the biggest cultural differences between the US and the UK- if we think someone is getting too big for their boots or taking themselves too seriously we do all we can to bring them down to size. In the US the national dream is to get the biggest boots possible and most people will cheer you on as you do it (although there’s a bit more cynicism creeping in there now). This is in part why Americans get a lot of stick from Brits off the back of ‘the greatest nation in the world’ stuff I think, not that Brits think Britain is the best in general, but rather there can’t meaningfully be a best and if you (anyone) really were you (they) wouldn’t need to shout about it. To be fair a lot of the Americans getting the stick aren’t necessarily the ones shouting about it but that’s not how humans work I guess.

If you like Sacha Baron Cohen in general and not just Ali G then I recommend watching his show 'Who is America' and there is also a 'Who is America: Extras' he winds the Americans up something chronic, he plays many different characters lol the funniest for me was when he went to the south and you could see the racism lol

Sasha Barron Cohen is an absolute genius. His characters are so diverse and outrageous. His Ali G character is based on the sad kids in England who think that black American gangsters are cool, so they try to belong to a "hood" which doesn't exist here. They're usually as thick as shit and only act tough when they're in a gang. They usually amount to nothing and spend all there money on over priced clothing. They believe that looking cool is more important than being smart and useful members of society. He is spot on with this character. ✌️♥️🇬🇧

This was from 2005, Ali G wasn't that well known in the US at that point.
He was only beginning to do stuff in the US at this point so still under most people's radar.
TNT knew who he was and was using his interviews as commercials, the players like Shaq would just go and talk to whoever they were told to by TNT.

Ali G became too well known which is why he had to reinvent himself as borat I think. If you haven’t seen Ali G indahouse, it’s worth checking out. That a movie he made in early 2000’s. ‘Bruno’ and ‘the dictator’ are other personas he came up with. I’m sure there’s more but I can’t think of them off the top of my head.
