  • In this Affinity Designer logo tutorial I’ll be demonstrating how you can create a simple badge style logo design. The logo depicts the name on a banner, placed over the silhouette of a deer’s head, but you can replace this with any other element you’d like in order to personalize it.
    All of the elements used in this tutorial can be downloaded here: logosbynick.com/affinity-desi...
    Credit to the user “StarGlade” on Pixabay for the deer silhouette.

    Thrilled to see you still doing Affinity tuts. I bought all 3 of their programs, and love your stuff as an old GIMP user. It would be great if you doubled-up some of the illustrator videos in Designer - a lot of the Illustrator tuts have great looking stuff that would be fun to do in Designer. Thanks for making this!

    This is really great. It started getting wonky when you started doing all the "subtracts," however. I just changed my font to white from red and it ended up looking the same as the end-state after all the select, subtract, select subtract. Would be helpful to understand the thinking on that, but a really nice tutorial and got me something that's FAR better than what I would have come up with on my own! Also got me understanding Affinity Designer a little bit, which I'm trialing at the moment. Thank you kindly! Sub'd.

    • @MarvusPlays
      @MarvusPlays Před rokem

      Subtraction allows you to have complex yet efficient curve layers that you otherwise wouldn't be able to create. This is how the process of getting those layers is done step by step to get to the end stage while retaining the key elements. If you were to give an unfinished logo file with all the excess layers to another person for use they wouldn't know what to do with all the mess and it would become annoying, especially for printing purposes for any commercial or non commercial product when considering colors and resizing

    I don't know if this option wasn't available when this video was made, but in at least v1.9, you can use the Curves tool (hotkey O) to offset a path (even type in a specific value), then click Bake Appearance. It's faster for me than adding a stroke, converting it to curves, then deleting the interior part.

  • @lattreedrukarniainternetow5069

    Hello, I have been working on Affinity Desinger for a good year and it is great, but there will be a problem, because when I create a stamp design, I give white letters and the background around black and then I cut the stamps out, but I don't know how to do it, in when the client sends me a ready-made logo or a JPG or PNG design made and how to convert it into a black and white design so that the plotter can cut it nicely with details.

Could you not have created both the banner and background shapes as one shape rather than create it, break it down and then put it back together again? I loved the end result and the tuition as it was the first time i'd seen the clicking the various elements and then subtracting. I guess I'll have to watch it a few times to take it in.

  • @JohnKuehne_SF
    @JohnKuehne_SF Před 3 lety

    Hey Nick - So happy you are doing Affinity Designer videos. Had to abandon Inkscape for stability reasons on Mac even though I went through most of your videos. Anyhow, as I was watching this I had some process steps questions to better understand what their purpose was.
    1. 2:07 you convert to curves , add to what looks like a group via the "Add" button and then you ungroup the separate letters. Seems redundant but maybe there is something in the structure that is different.
    2. 4:37 you go through the steps to add a stroke and then eliminate the nodes to make it a solid object. Wasn't it a solid object before you added the stroke and then removed it?
    3. 9:45 you did the same process of expanding the stroke and then deleting the nodes to make it a solid object. Not following the reasoning for the extra steps. My guess is that it has something to do with your steps to create "negative space" but not completely sure.
    4. 14:11 You lost me on why there is a need to duplicate the later in order to have it "subtract" from the other layers.
    5. 14:41 You are adding negative space in some cases by selecting the copy made below and others by just using the original shape. Is there a difference?
    Looking forward to tons more of these from you.
    thanks a ton
    John

    • @DesignMadeSimple
      @DesignMadeSimple  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi John, I'm a little late on this one but I'll try my best...
      1.) I unified those objects together so that I could subtract them from the banner later on. If they're grouped together it won't work. They have to be a unified object.
      2.) Yes it was a solid object but it wasn't big enough. I added the stroke as an offset, then converted it to a path, which eliminates the fill. I deleted the extra nodes so that it would be filled in entirely.
      3.) Yes same reason. The object needs to be filled in entirely because it'll be used to subtract from the other objects later on and create negative space around them.
      4.) There needs to be duplicates because that shape needs to be subtracted from several objects.
      5.) Same reason for number 4 applies. The shape needs to be subtracted from several objects in order to create that negative space offset between the other objects.
