One solution: make them do math problems to log in for one hour.
Then parents would never get to monitor their children's content because most parents would take even longer to log in. Including me. Although I am a grandparent.

My daughter synced her daughters phone with hers and she told her that while she pays for her phone she monitors what sites she visits, what she posts, until she is 18yrs old. Through this she never commented on anything but observed, she managed to save one of her daughters friend who at 13 was talking suicide (she approached the school councillor to help this child), she observed the bullying her daughter was getting and helped her. She is now 21, has completed 3yrs university and has a steady job, she is a well balanced confident woman.

@@sublime7617 No. What is toxic is uncontrolled internet use by 11yrs olds. Granddaughter had access to internet on their pc at the age of 2. She was very computer savvy by the age of 9. The syncing was from a loving parent, the child was happy with it. She could track her parents too (without them knowing). Many of her friends parents were beside themselves with worry about their children's use of the internet.

Hes oddly right. A young girl with the power of social media can be a horrid thing who can destory lives of others young people.
Everyone acts like these were not a thing from before smart phones or even the internet, it was just in person. Beauty magazines used to drive a lot of this but it was still more the in person problem more so when others couldnt see it and reporting it only made it come back worse later.

And we need to educate people about these dangers. Kids are going to be exposed to this stuff no matter what restrictions or regulations are in place. The younger they are when they are taught, the deeper it sinks in and the fewer that get sucked in. There are plenty of studies across a large number of different issues that have proven this. Please, by all means, go ahead and do those other things too but do not underestimate the power of a decent education on these things.
In 1996 you could buy a cell phone, Yep it was just a phone marginally useful because of coverage. In 2004 I decided to get a cell phone to use on my boat in Singapore, the dealers talked about its wonderful camera and everything it could do for me, OK but how is it as a phone? I see people walking down the street with eyes glued to a screen and thumbs flying and think what about the world around them, outside of their virtual existence. Addiction, shame on you all, just get a life.....

If the EPA can regulate for clean air, a tech. and Soc. Media regulator can regulate for “clean air” on the Internet.
You start with transparency. You find out how they’re training their algorithms. You don’t need to understand the algorithm to understand what they’re training it to do/show people. I read an article some time back about how meta was building some group feature where insiders described it as being “conceived by the devil” or something similar.
Transparency will guve you some of that.
AI is trained for “outcomes”. You can judge a company in the outcomes it’s training its AIs for. And, do research the intended, and unintended consequences of the actions it takes to satisfy those outcomes. meta itself Minerva lot of the harms it’d caused like suicidal girls etc. and it suppressed those results. Did it do anything about it?
You don’t need to be “technical” to understand the negative consequences of those harms. And, to demand that companies do something about it. You don’t necessarily need to prescribe how they should fix it. Just demand that they do, understand the actions they took, and evaluate how how effective those actions were both individually, and relative to their peers.
