  • In this video Leah discusses the prevalence and challenges of erectile dysfunction (ED) among male veterans. She emphasizes the reluctance many men feel in discussing this sensitive issue with healthcare providers and encourages veterans to seek help, even if it means writing down their concerns. Leah explains that ED can be service-connected, arising from incidents during active duty or related to other service-connected disabilities, such as trauma, psychiatric issues, medications, hypertension, diabetes, and prostate cancer. She notes that ED can qualify for VA disability compensation, including special monthly compensation beyond regular disability payments. Leah also provides an overview of the Disability Benefit Questionnaire (DBQ) used in the evaluation process, clarifying that genital examinations are optional and detailing how the questionnaire assesses ED and related conditions.

    After much research, I saw many examiners denying claims due to being new and misinformation, So, I opted for a Nexus and DBQ for ED Secondary to MDD (Depression) from Leah and her team, just to make sure I had all the Proper documents when filing. Amazing Nexus letter and DBQ!
    No in person C&P was scheduled - Medical Opinion only.
    SUCCESS!! - THANK YOU LEAH!!

    Great presentation I have suffered from this condition for years. I didn’t realize it was compensated until a couple years ago. Went through the c&p examination and was denied. Didn’t pursue the issue because they granted me permanent and total disability. Now I know it makes a difference.

    Very difficult subject to discuss, most guys would rather take a beating than to acknowledge any problems whatsoever with that aspect of their life, but you handled it in a clinical, professional and enlightened manner by speaking to peripheral factors that could also impact the situation, in short you illustrate how to fix the problem, not the blame-- excellent presentation as always.

    Had a c&p exam for ED related to mental health yesterday. The NP told me she wasn't a urologist and didn't seem to want to do the penis examination. She told me I could decline it since she wasn't able to provide anything regarding the visual exam. I declined it but will this be used against me? I wasn't going to force her to do a genital exam.

    • @prestigeveteranmedical
      @prestigeveteranmedical  Před 2 lety +2

      I am sorry to hear that sir. That is a shame that she made you feel that way. Erectile Dysfunction is well within the scope of a NP in the family practice setting. It should not be used against you at all (unless you meet the criteria for greater than 0% which would require penile deformity).

    • @user-vw7qe1cf9x
      @user-vw7qe1cf9x Před 2 lety +3

      Sorry, this happened to you. You should always get the help and treatment you deserve as a vet. This is why these benefits are offered. I had the opposite happen to me. I had no idea there would be a physical exam. I felt I looked totally normal and had no deformities or big surgeries. It just wasn't working anymore. I was greeted w a 26 yr old female NP. We spoke and she filled out some paperwork. She had to explain retrograde ejaculation as I never heard of that. I was so ashamed and embarrassed at the idea of having a female look at, touch, and inspect my genitals, testicles, penis....it was horrifying and I felt in shock. Then after her having been in the room with me for 20 mins asking questions with the door closed, she said it was time for a genital and rectal exam. I was extremely uncomfortable. It took me many years to even talk about this and what they gave me was a 20-something female...and worse, she was attractive. I know this sounds old-fashioned, but I'm an older guy and I felt humiliated. I DID NOT WANT TO DO THIS. She never told me I didn't need to do this for her report to go to claims. She had a responsibility to tell me this. She did say I could take another day off, drive an hour and try again and perhaps there would be a male on staff but it took me 20 yrs to talk about it, the three months to get the appointment...and I am not in a position to take another day off without pay. I figured that if I didn't comply that I could not submit the claim. She then walked in the receptionist (she was answering phones and greeting in the lobby...likely not a nurse) and tells me that this other young lady is part of "my Care Team". I felt lied to, I felt ambushed and they stole all my power and dignity...there was nothing I could do. I felt helpless. They knew damn well an older man was coming in for this kind of exam a month in advance. They would NEVER ambush a female with two young males...NEVER. The subcontract provider was LHI in Fayetteville, NC. I have never felt so humiliated and emasculated as for an inexperienced young nurse and the receptionist watching while I have a genital and prostate exam. I sat in my car after and broke down. I have now been in therapy for 9 months (for other things too) and have a lot of issues...this is definitely one of them. I wish I was told what the appointment was for instead of just reporting to the exam location. I wish they told me it was a girl. I wish I knew there was a physical piece to this. I wish I knew I could have declined the physical. So emasculating.....this is how male vets get treated...just another number and who cares how you feel. Unimportant. So two young ladies got to learn on me like I was a forced guinea pig...and that's how I felt. Had the tables been turned and two young males walked in to observe a female gynecological and rectal exam with the door closed there would most certainly be lawyers involved. We need to change policies to match what females get. Men, especially retired, older vets should not be treated like meat or second-class citizens. I will never ask for treatment or submit myself to an exam like this as long as I live. Thanks, LHI...and thanks, nurse provider. I am so angry and there is absolutely nothing can do.

    how long after being prescribed of 'Viagra' would be a strong enough case to file ED secodaty to PTSD/Anxiety meds for SMC_K?

    • @prestigeveteranmedical
      @prestigeveteranmedical  Před 2 lety +4

      That is a great question. You could do it right away. Generally speaking the VA considers a condition "chronic" if has been over 6 months I believe. That doesnt mean you need to be on the meds that long, just having the symptoms.

    • @spyxxx566
      @spyxxx566 Před 2 lety +2

      ok, the diagnostic is more important than the meds. many VA doctors though would diagnose first in order to prescribe to meds.
