  • Having recently moved to O‘ahu, Hawai‘i, I've been interested in the little abandoned military observation posts called "pillboxes" that are hidden around the island. This is the first in a series of videos that I plan to make about these structures, and includes a set of pillboxes on two hills - extinct cinder cone volcanoes - around Makakilo City, north of Kapolei. The first is at Pu‘u Makakilo and the second is at Pu‘u Palailai.

Thank you so much. We bought a house in lower Makakilo around 1975. And I would take my 7-year-old and his friend on hikes there. Very cool places. That square hole is about 4ft across I think. It was always wet in there. Standing water. It's as dry as a bone there. Everyone refers to it as the desert. Windy and dry on that end of the island. Million dollar views. The house is still in the family.

That's the one behind near where I live that one over looks koalina and that one you have to cross through someone's yard to get access. I haven't been there since I was a kid back then it wasn't so bad getting there now there's fences and everything

Unfortunately it's on private land. There are ways to access it from local neighborhoods (I think you can find some on AllTrails), but there are no clear trailheads.
