gentl.mn/to-wear-or-not-to-we...
HISTORY:
- Up until the 19th century, you will never see an undershirt in public.
- The dress shirt we call today used to be undershirt back then.
- The purpose of underwear was to protect your outer garments from sweat.
- Fabric was really expensive; undershirts were only something a noble man could afford whereas regular blue collar workers were happy to just have a single layer of fabric which was not an undershirt.
Today, the undershirt is used for three main reasons:
1. Insulation
2. To protect your dress shirts from deodorant stains.
3. To simply keep moisture away from your body.
- As a side note, in 1934, Clark Gable appeared in the movie "It happened one night". When he actually took his dress shirt off, people could see that he was not wearing an undershirt and many thought that was revolutionary and legend has it that undershirt sales dropped by 75% thereafter.
- It took until World War II until men rediscovered the undershirt but in fact during World War II, the G.Is and soldiers actually wore just the undershirt like a t-shirt which is what evolved from this particular way of wearing the undershirt.
UNDERSHIRT PROS AND CONS
1. If you sweat profusely, definitely always wear an undershirt because it just creates another layer to keep the moisture in your body and nothing looks worse than you standing there with a jacket with huge sweat stains in your armpits.
2. When wearing stiff, rounded evening shirts with white tie or black tie. If you don't wear an undershirt, you can get nipple chaffing
3. If you're often cold in the winter, the undershirt really helps to insulate you and therefore, you should always wear one.
4. If you easily overheat, you should probably skip it.
5. If you have a lot of chest hair, an undershirt helps you to not show them in public and also when yoy wear a thinner shirt fabric, your chest hair can sometimes poke through and an undershirt will definitely help you stop that.
- In terms of comfort, not having an additional undershirt may be more comfortable and less constricting because you simply have one layer of cloth and not two.
- If your dress shirt is made from a very lightweight fabric, you actually are more likely to see the undershirt underneath of your dress shirt which is bad.
UNDERSHIRT Dos AND DONTs:
- Wear un undershirt and not a t-shirt.
- An undershirt is much thinner and it fits tightly. Key points, lightweight, flexible and close fitting.
- Do not wear white or black t-shirts or undershirts, this may come as a surprise but white and black are actually too strong so they are actually visible underneath your dress shirt.
- If you have dark skin, wear darker colors maybe even black. Don't wear a white undershirt. If you have very light skin, try to get something that really fits that skin tone but when in doubt grey is always better than black or white.
TIP: An old trick to make skin colored shirts for most complexions is to use black tea. So basically, you take an undershirt that fits you well in white and you brew very strong black tea and then you put the shirt in a basin and let it sit at that solution for about fifteen to thirty minutes depending on your complexion or until it matches your skin.
- Do wear very close fitting undershirts because you can move around and they're stretchy. The armholes are high which allows you to move freely.
- You want your undershirt to be long enough so it will never come untucked.
- What's really important is not to wear sleeveless undershirts.
- Definitely avoid crew neck shirts at all cost
- In terms of material, do wear cotton or cotton blend undershirts
- Undershirts are never meant to be worn on their own, undershirts are simply there to be worn underneath the dress shirt.
HOW TO BUY AN UNDERSHIRT:
- Ultimately, it comes down to two things; Comfort and looks.
- The best value I found in undershirts is from a company called Ribbed Tee.
- First of all, their shirts are long, they are really snuggly fitting, their seams are very flat and they are as comfortable as an undershirt can be.

''if you launder your shirt after every wear..."'
*nervous laugh*
I always like the historical info segments
Glad to hear that
Did not expected to meet you here!
Sven
I have been viewing your blog/ site for years now, and I must congratulate you for the ever increasing scope, quality and intelligence of your postings. From one lawyer to another...Bravo! You are the gold standard in modern dandy related blogs.
Your taste and understanding on man's clothing is superb!
Thank you
I've was taught to always wear a cotton undershirt when wearing a dress shirt. I sweat heavily and tend to wear a cotton tank top undershirt so that I can stay cool and still protect my dress shirt.
I wear a crewneck when my shirt is completely buttoned and I'm sporting a tie. The collar is not visible under these circumstance.
I appreciate the legitimate help. All other style guides on CZcams are simply sellouts to sponsors.
I was trained (in the Corps) to ALWAYS wear an undershirt with very, very few exceptions. Men - always wear an undershirt.
samtemporary RAH
And underwear....
Agreed!
@@dbryant965
That's hilarious because it's also unironically correct.
And you can always trust the US government to be up to date with the newest technology and best practices! lol
very well made video. I appreciate the effort put into your videos
+Dat Tech Doe Thanks, please share the video with others that might like it.
I'm addicted to your video from couples of weeks....so helpful
An Insightful and a well-put-together video. I'd like to pinpoint that you manner of speaking is truly refined. Quite poised. Saying you are a gentleman is an understatement. The right guy for the gentleman vocation.
Great video, I love the history and origin bits in the videos. A gentleman is informed
+Masterpsflood :).
I must have to say I'm really glad I found this channel, you are very informative and very helpful....also could you do one on dress shirts and give tips with that? if so that be great thanks again
I wear my dress shirts tight and sometime the lower buttons come undone. I was told my loved ones that this was unflattering and I should wear a muscle shirt undershirt underneath
Great video as always!
I know so much about undershirts now. These kinds of videos are so helpful to people like me: I'm a girl, and I have NO idea what my male character would do in this situation! Now, I know! I love your passion! Great video! Thank you!
did u transition?
Hello! Thank you for another informative video. I hadn't thought of wearing a grey undershirt! Would you mind clarifying - is it the retro or classic v-neck from Ribbedtees that you're wearing here? And are they still your favourite? Thanks again!
LOVED IT! thank you for the info!
Great history and advice. Thank you! It seems Ribbed Tee is closing though. Got any other suggestions or updated info on this topic?
Great stuff.. I love learning something new
great videos. do you have one on sweaters?
Noted! Thank you for the information.
I have a question, why do round collar undershirts exist? Do they have a specific purpose, or is it just because there is demand for them?
Very informative, I use baking powder in my underarms when I shower to to deter excessive sweating,
Even on my body if it's going to be a really hot day.
Crewneck undershirts, sleeveless or not, are no problem and probably even preferable with their high neckline IF the shirt is worn buttoned with a tie, even a bow-tie, all the time. The undershirt covers the whole front area and this means it is much more difficult to detect it thru the shirt. Especially when a jacket is covering the shirt. Using this kind of undershirt opening the shirt collar is stricly a no-go. So I guess the best option is to own different kinds of undershirts for different outfits and occasions.
Cool and helpful info. Thank you.
Great video.
I kinda like that you can see the crewneck on some types of shirts.
I agree. Outside of formal shirts, visibility should be ok.
Great video 🤠
very educational, thank you.
What is your opinion on 'Filo di Scozia' undershirts? I have had a few in my time and I love them although they are very expensive.
Grey undershirts! Whooda thought?! Great tip, mahalos!
Great tips and information !
+GungFuIsGungFu P Thanks
Great video, very comprehensive
+Armando Cárdenas Thanks.
Hello Sven, What about if you have a white shirt in Spring and Summer. Good "ole Dad" always taught me to where a white T-shirt. True?
Can you wear an undershirt AND those shirt stay thing to pull your dress shirt down at the same time ? Won’t the undershirt ride up and bunch up ? Or can you attach the shirt things to both the undershirt and the dress shirt ?
Thanks !
My habit of wearing a crew neck undershirt 100% of the time began when I was in the Navy. A white undershirt showing at the neck under an open collar is required. I don’t know what to make of your admonishment to never allow your undershirt to show. I’m 63 years old, and in the 40 years since I left the Navy I have adopted two habits from that time. Carrying my wallet in my left rear pocket and showing my undershirt at the very top under my neck. Hmmm I’m not sure I totally agree on this one, but, I do agree with 99% of all other advice you give. Keep up the good work.
I believe it's a kind of modern made-up rules, mostly observed in Western sartorial circle due to stereotype image of when sloppy officer workers untie their neckties and unbutton. But personally, I don't think visibility is always bad, especially with more casual shirts. This 'rule' is rarely followed in East Asia, though.
what is the difference between an undershirt and a vest ?
Thanks for videos
Great video my armpits require a good undershirt!!
I think men should wear undershirts more often than not. It definitely makes the outer shirt look better. I find that a v-neck makes wearing a closed collar and tie more comfortable.
surprisingly, not a white undershirt
I always wear a t-shirt under any shirt. Plus I always wear one size smaller so it keeps your body look more firm and fit. Plus your shirts never get dirty and never shows your sweat. Don't forget always shave your underarm hair and always use antisweat spray or roller.
so which undershirt is best? maybe like too 3
great useful video
+Husain Alnasser thank you!
I just picked up two nice breathable undershirts from Uniqlo. It's actually my first endeavor into undershirts. I really appreciated this video and loved the history. I'll be sure to read the guide. Thanks!
Glad to hear that!
It is so much better when he isn't forcing a smile while he talks.
I sometimes feel modern society has this cult of smile, in which some unthoughtful people will assume you are angry or depressed when you simply don't smile like a Bozo all the time. And this is the very cause of depression and ultimately suicide themselves.
I quite like Mr. Davis. I haven't purchased from RibbedTee before but will consider them.
I like your eyes. I like your smile/teeth. I very much enjoy the advice you offer because I have a husband and a son who benefit from it... Thank you for so kindly sharing. You be well. Bye now
Hello Sven, I was wondering if you had plans to do a video on suspenders. I prefer them drastically over belts but I don't know where to buy quality ones.
I'll put it on the to do list.
I'll put it on the to do list.
Thanks! I was just curious.
Should An Undershirt Be As Long As A Dress Shirt or Longer?
What if i wear a black undershirt over white shirt..... Will it see through?
If you wear a white crewnecked long-sleeved undershirt under a dress shirt buttoned up with a tie, then people should not be able to tell at all. Sure the white might show through but because it would be consistent everywhere, they couldn't tell if it's just because the dress shirt itself is lighter or whether there's anundershirt underneath. For that purpose, a crewnecked shirt is preferable bearing in mind that that is conditional on not having any plan to undo the top button of the dress shirt.
Great information. Thanks!
+Ben Townsend You're welcome! I hope you find our future videos informative as well. Stay tuned ;)
+Ben Townsend You're welcome! I hope you find our upcoming work to be as informative. Stay tuned!
Rapha merino v neck base layers are the best.
"ugly as hell" Agreed, and yet almost everyone does this. The only mistake I really ever made according to this video was wearing white undershirts, which is in fact visible through the dress shirt fabric. I will try some neutral tone ones.
Wondering if you can do a video about wedding suit
Input it on the list
If one always wears an undershirt with the dress shirt buttoned-up all the way and with a tie, is there any reason to favour a v-neck versus a crew neck? I assume the v-neck is only useful so one can wear the dress shirt with a button or two undone and not have the undershirt showing.
One is more likely to see the seams of a crew neck because it is closer to the neck. Just try it out and look in the mirror.
Sven, when did you start wearing formal clothing? I have worn ties and dress clothes since I was nine or ten.
With formal, so you mean ties and suits? If so then, I started getting interested in clothing at the age of 15 but at the end of the day it doesn't matter when you started, what matters is where you are today.
My God, thank you!
5:14...could you write the name of those guys, pleas?
What undershirt should be worn if the top wear is almost see through? We have a traditional formal wear which used to be made up of thick materials but for some reason those things nowadays are so thin they're translucent, and I detest seeing undershirts worn under them (although that was how it should be worn).
I wear a military PE uniform's tank top. They're cheap, made of great fabric, and don't bring attention to themselves.
Have you ever tried the Sloane Men skin tone undershirts?
+dutchdigger1996 Yes, and while they com in different colors they did not last very long.
A great presenter. I really like him. I wouldn't watch 13 minutes on undershirts from anyone else. I even like the musical theme introduction at the start after watching multiple videos on this channel. (I listen and watch rather than fast forwarding through the opneing.) But I'm not so keen on the drumming throughout.
Is this your first video? 😉 I jest, but I am happy you no longer eye up your audience anymore! 😁
I dress up whenever possible however, on days that don't have a tie, I wear crew necks under my dress garments for modesty, as I am to dress modestly for Mass. For the rest of you guys suit yourself.
Synthetic materials are much better at moisture "removal" than a natural types of fabric. Natural types of fabric keep and collect the moisture. Look at the military/hiking/sports tourism experience: that persons wear underwear items made of synthetic materials in terms of having experience of comfort and moisture removal purposes. Sorry for my English ;)
If you sweat a little bit more you have quite a problem, especially in the summer. If you don't wear an undershirt, sweat stains are visible on your dress shirt. If you wear an undershirt, it is quite warm and you sweat too, even if you use more deodorant. Especially slim fitting undershirts sit right under the armpit, causing even more sweat. It really is a difficult decision. Nice video nevertheless!
I disagree. When I wear an undershirt, I don't feel sweaty and no stains pop up on my outerwear. This coming from a bloke that sweats like a pig at the slightest sign of heat or physical effort, and who lives in the tropics and often faces 34ºC+ weather come August and September.
Ribbed Tee is defunct now.
Thanks for the video, it was incredibly helpful.
On a side note. There is a company called "ripteeapparel" which sounds very similar to "ribbedtee.com"
It may be helpful to you and your partners if you add a link to their website when you first mention them in your video.
Once again, thanks for the video!
Thanks, I did that.
I have to disagree with the point of not showing a crew neck collared undershirt with an open collar dress or casual button up shirt. I do dog feel dressed without one and do not like the way it looks with my upper chest showing. In fact I specifically look for an undershirt that has a particularly high neckline.
Always wear a new clean one before putting your shirt on. Also, wear another clean one before going to bed. Never go to bed with the same stuff you wore to work. This way your bedsheet does not get the dirty or bad smell. Get a habit once you wake up jump into the shower! Cold for Morning and warm before sleep.
Where is your super underwear video? Thanks!
Undershirt is a great protection layer for your precious nipls
No! Dont tea dye your undershirts! If it inadvertently peeks out or when he undresses it will look dingy, yellowed and disgusting. Nothing more sexy than my husband pulling a crisply ironed dress shirt over a fresh, soft pure white undershirt. The weight of both fabrics will determine if the undershirt sees thru. Summer is the time you really need to protect your suit coat and dress shirts from sweat.
R.I.P. RibbedTee.
Watching this in 2022 because I'm finally investing in quality clothing so I think wearing these will help reduce washing of the luxury fabrics like silk and cashmere. Bah.
Lightweight Merino wool MUCH better than cotton - merino wool blended with low % synthetic moisture-wicking. cotton-tencel blends (still rare in menswear) are also far superior to cotton or polyester shirts.
I think that wearing an undershirt under a dress shirt is a must, even when it's hot. What do you think?
Why?
I don't sweat easily so I have never needed to wear one under a dress shirt.
James Dean, Steve McQueen, and Johnny Depp have something to say about this.
I wear them mainly because my nipples show a bit more than id like. But ive also been wearing white tshirts my whole life as undershirts XD
I just soaked one of my white shirts in black tea. Let's see how it turns out! :)
I sweat too much to not wear an undershirt
ALWAYS wear an u/s or a v never been an option
Steve Guttenberg's brother
Undershirts in 120 degree weather is a big no no
I've tried it and it helped my body vent off the sweat. And I sweat a BUNCH.
If your wearing a tie you can’t see your undershirt
9:10 "ugly as hell!" yeah I wonder ppl still wearing it that way, even some ppl with high position and expensive suit. it so stupid
I have to disagree with some of your points. I just wear black crew neck quick dry t-shirts. Thin, breathable, wicks away moisture, comfortable and it looks classy in my opinion. Every time I see someone without one, I notice their hairs, sweat stains under the arms and it just looks sloppy. I maybe wrong, but I had no complaints and usually get complemented on how well I dress.
Only time I can see myself not wearing one...if I lived in Miami or a hot and tropical environment.
+alberto cabrera Then let's agree to disagree.
black crew neck? oh man yeah agree to disagree
clearly quite the hillbilly
old spice red oddly enough leaves a blue residue . very nasty
Guess it contains copper.
No to the open shirt look with v-neck or low cut undershirt/tee shirt. Nothing worse than this bare-chest display look.
Fitting crew cut for me. For casual wear and with a non-white shirt I prefer colored tee shirts under.
I actually wear women's t-shirts because they are very widely cut around the neck and you never see them x)
Reason 4: because you are hairy and don't need to show the world your chest hair that approaches your neck.
If you have a smooth hairless chest wear a low cut sweater and show everyone that nice chest. In the summer time wear tank tops at times better yet go topless.
Wife beaters?
ur vids are kind of boring but good info
I'd rather freeze to death than wear an undershirt. Just say no
Too much talking
This guy has good content, but he is one that I have to play at 2x speed.
