    Variable Frequency Drives are used within the automation industry to drive induction motors with added precision over a simple contactor. Over the last decade, these devices have become increasingly cheaper. Based on this phenomenon, it's now recommended to utilize a VFD over a contactor in every application. VFDs are flexible, provide additional control and data in every application.
    The PowerFlex 525 series of Variable Frequency Drives from Allen Bradley are an excellent choice & have been an industry standard for several years. Their reliability as well as ease of use, especially within the Rockwell Automation ecosystem, has allowed them to become popular all over the world.
    Commissioning a PowerFlex 525 VFD is straightforward. These drives can be easily wired to start and stop from push buttons through direct inputs. However, a much more practical approach is to add the drive to a private network which includes a Programmable Logic Controller. By doing so, the programmer is able to create advanced motion routines in addition to the simple start and stop features. In this tutorial, we'll take a look at how to integrate a PowerFlex 525 VFD into RSLogix Studio 5000 over EtherNet IP.
    Within the datasheet, the user will find a lot of information about the setup of the drive. This includes wiring diagrams as well as parameters which we will be setting up shortly.
    In terms of wiring, the simplest method of controlling the drive without a PLC is through the use of a start and stop pushbuttons. The diagram below (taken from the manual) illustrates how this can be accomplished. Note that although this method is simple, it's not the recommended way to use these drives.
    Note that there's a pre-installed jumper between terminals 01 and 11. This jumper needs to be in place while the drive is controlled over EtherNet/IP. If you're planning on using pushbuttons, the jumper must be removed.
    Within the datasheet, you'll find parameters that may be configured to suit a specific application. These parameters are split into six sections:
    Basic Display
    Basic Program
    Terminal Blocks
    Communications
    Logic
    Advanced Display
    Each section has specific parameters for the drive. As the names suggest, parameters within a section will address the setup of electrical parameters, communication with other devices, logical programming and the display of the drive.

    This logic has created a race condition. If the RPI times out between your start and stop branch it means a packet will be sent to the drive asking to start and stop together. The next packet should just be a start but the drive is already locked up until the start is cycled. Nice video though!

    Vlad, how do I change speed of the drive over Ethernet? Somehow the controls engineer o work with gets into the parameter on the drive and increases/decreases speed. When I look at parameters the output frequency is always grayed out and I can’t change it

    • @SolisPLC
      @SolisPLC  Před 2 lety

      The parameter should be the right approach. I suspect that it's either nested into an AOI or it's being aliased elsewhere. Can you send me the program or a few screenshot to v.romanov@solispl.com? I'll try to see what's wrong in your specific case.

    • @stephengibbon2141

    There is a coil inside the VFD correct? And when it gets energized it closes the contacts which sends power out to the motor. So, is the ethernet wire energizing the coil? Is it power of Ethernet type wire?

    • @SolisPLC
      @SolisPLC  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Greg, not exactly. The EtherNet commands go to a board on the drive. This board receives the signal and will use a chip that is on the board to toggle the coil. There is no power over ethernet and it's not the direct signal over that wire that is switching the drive.

  • @gregarkwright3960
    @gregarkwright3960 Před 2 lety +1

    In the very end of the video, the green button is pressed. The plc receives this input. Then, the ethernet wire energizes the VFD? Is that how it works?
