Not sure if you’ve read it yet but I recently read Diavola and absolutely loved it! It is a horror about toxic family relationships with a paranormal twist. Not sure if it would be up your alley but figured I would suggest it!

For a good book about a horror movie and the studio system, I highly recommend Curse of the Reaper.

I didn't read any books lately, last week I ordered "Incidents Around the House" by Josh Malerman, is about an entity that targets an 8-year old, something to read with the lights on 👻
I know that "Horror Movie" is seeing a lot of negativity right now but I just loved it. How it talks about masks that we put on (literally and figuratively) and what is hidden underneath, the blurry line between fiction and reality, of making art making your whole existence.... also bullying and mental health and growing up and of course Horror films. It really clicked with me but yeah it is a bit weird (which is maybe also why it clicked with me). My favorite by him now next to "A Head Full of Ghosts". I didn't get along with "Cabin at the End of the World" so maybe you'd like that more since you didn't really care for this one? Just a thought...

I just gave Horror Movie two stars earlier today, so it's not just you. I think I'm going to wait a little to read the Craig diLouie one because he's been a more consistent writer for me. I do recommend Tremblay's A Head Full of Ghosts and The Cabin at the End of the World, and even his zombie one, Survivor Song.

Coup De Grace sounds amazing! I love liminal horror and weird horror. I recently watched (kinda rewatched) Channel Zero season two No-End House. One of my favorite horror anthology series ever. It's very liminal weird horror that deals with a young woman's relationship with her dead father. It gets dark! It's on Shudder's series tab.

I read Horror Movie and it was my first Tremblay book too! I was super interested in the beginning, but as the story progressed I was like wait is that all? I was expecting more tbh. I also thought it would focus more on the current day re-quel and was disappointed it didn’t. I liked the ending, but I was disappointed that that ending scene wasn’t a midway point
A head full of Ghosts is Tremblay's best. It's SO good! Give that one a chance ❤

Definitely read A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay. It has such an interesting and unique concept and the horror elements are genuinely creepy.

I just ordered I Am Not Your Final Girl. I am not into poetry but poetry about women in horror movies sounds like it's for me! I don't know if you've read it but the last horror book I read was The Rust Maidens by Gwendolyn Kiste and it was very good.
i felt the same way about ‘horror movie’ and im sad about it because i bought a signed copy 😅 the idea of it started off strong in the beginning but i agree it felt really pretentious and just boring. i also felt like if i read the phrase “the thin kid” one more time i was gonna go insane LMAO. it got repetitive so fast.

I read Small Town Horror right when it came out. Loved it. Love all of Malfi's work. Never disappoints. As for Tremblay, I am sad to hear his new one is a snoozefest. Don't give up on him though. You should check out his novel Head Full of Ghosts. Excellent. You might like Richard Chizmar as well. He has collaborated with King before (the Gwendy's Button Box trilogy) and his novels Chasing the Boogeyman and Becoming the Boogeyman are great.
I bought Horror Movie (also my first Tremblay book), read a couple of chapters, but after I've heard it wasn't all that good, I returned. Hopefully Stephen Graham Jones' "I Was a Teenage Slasher" will be a good one.

You pronouce Coup de Grâce as "koo" + "duh" + "graass" 😉 Thanks for the reviews. I'll check out the Stephen King one soon, but I'm reading a few Brett Cogburn bloody western novels right now, which I highly recommend as a palate cleanser for reading too much horror. FYI the book is called _Blind Dog Canyon_ and it's superb.

Loved the reviews and would love to see the vlog. I’m very excited to read King’s new one. I did get Stephen King’s Maine. I feel like I need to read that first though. I’m currently reading books for Summerween. I’m reading We used to live here, it’s ok somewhat unsettling. I had Tremblay’s new book but I already donated it, due to false advertising. Anyway, I’m still in a book slump so we’ll see.

I honestly haven't read King for many many years now... His writing style and my reading taste did simply not match anymore. I will always love some of his books though, they made a nerdy little Swedish girl fall in love with the horror genre. I really think he shines in the short story format, though, so maybe I should try You Like It Darker, and see if we can rekindle that old flame... 😄
I was excited when I heard about the new Tremblay book, I love the concept, but from what I've heart it sounds really boring and disappointing. I really liked his A Head Full of Ghosts, but the rest I have read from him has been underwhelming. Bummer!
I just started reading The Devil Came Down The Mountain by Christopher Bond, and I hope I will love it! My reading year has been very "meh" so far, and I just want to truly love something! Come on writers, entertain me! :)

I read Horror Movie and I enjoyed the beginning but I found the ending to be extremely disappointing. I was expecting more spooky stuff to happen on set but nothing really happened. A book I read recently that I did love was We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kleiwer. The cover says it's like Get Out and Parasite but that is a straight up lie. Some reviews said it was similar to House of Leaves which I haven't read. I'm more reminded of the Remedy-verse...the video games by Remedy Entertainment; Alan Wake, Control, and Alan Wake 2.

Stephen kings short story books are my favorite. He’s the only author that can scare me to my soul. My TBR books are all over the place. Two vampire books waiting to be read. Currently reading a non horror witchy book that gives me all the cozy fall vibes I am craving right now.

Murder Road was not good, but I would recommend St. James' book The Broken Girls.
I'm excited to get to You Like it Darker. I don't want to imagine a world without Stephen King. 😢

Coup de Grâce is pronounced... i think... Coo da Graas (use best french accent). This books sounds like something I would enjoy reading. You do movie reviews and books. Your time management must be amazing. I'm lucky to read one book every few month. I would love to experience your reading vlog. Keep up good work!

I had a similar reaction to Horror Movie. I wanted to like it a lot more than I did. I will bump How to Make a Horror Movie down my to read list given your review. I'm just not in the mood for another book like that right now.
I am currently finishing The Watchers by AM Shine. Follows the movie fairly closely but there are a couple of differences. I've enjoyed it so far.
Most recent reads are as follows:
The House that Horror Built by Christina Henry (it was ok but it wasn't the type of story I thought it was going to be. Will try again at some point in the future and see if it works better for me now that I know what it is)
The Devil Aspect by Craig Russell (I liked this one. The Devil's Playground was one of my favorite books last year so I'm trying to read more of his works. This was a standard period murder thriller but even though it was a bit by the numbers, I had a good time with it because I wanted that sort of story.)
Thin Air by Michelle Paver (This was a re-read bc I love both this and her other winter isolation book (Dark Matter). I popped it on after finishing Horror Movie bc I just wanted something I knew was a good book to help get me out of a reading slump.)
Dead Girls Walking by Sami Ellis (I wanted to like this more than I did. I am still not sure what all happened. I could not keep the side characters straight in my head. Had to go back and re-read large portions bc I got lost so many times which is unusual for me. Great concept just had a really hard time following it.)
@@therosebride I started both The House That Horror Built and Dead Girls Walking and felt like I was going to struggle to get through them, so I put them down. This year has been weird for me reading-wise!
@mandysmorgueofhorror same! It's bizarre how many books I was looking forward to have just fallen flat for me. Hoping things will pick up with the rest of this year's releases
you're the 3rd person I heard who didn't like horror movie and also made similar complaints about horror books that are about horror movies

and yeah, i've read 5 paul tremblay books and they're all pretty boring. and they squander great premises every time.
